The Incident After FEU vs. La Salle Game 1

The incident in question concerns a sequence of events showing Asst. Team Manager Manny Salgado hitting the back of the head of FEU player Arwynd Santos.

There are a lot of bashing going on in the different fora and a lot of opinions. The real issues seem to be:

(1.) What are the relevant facts: Before the game? after the game? what were Yeo and santos talking about? how did Salgado enter the picture?

(2.) What are the approrpiate responses: who should respond? why?

Minus the bashing, what do you guys think?

Re: The Incident After FEU vs. La Salle Game 1

    A little off topic.

It seems like we are seeing a different Arwind this season. This year actually. I've never seen him show as much reaction compared to previous years. Even during their PBL games I've seen him do motions that are not necessarily part of the play like after succesfully running down a loose ball over an oppsing player he would exagerately "dip" the ball out of bounds, perhaps, to put more emphasis to it. I've also seen him do a little "mocking" clap here and there, gets a little "jiggy wit it", etc. If not for their first game victory, I would say that this is a sign of weakness because his ability to stay in focus gives him an edge over other players. But then again, as shown in hte first game, a little gigil can push him to do more. I hope he doesn't over-do it.

Back to the topic. As a passive bystander to the championship, all I want is to bring attention back to the series. There is no "sanction" greater than the public scorn, anyway. No amount of spin from our lasallian friends can change people's minds as the video has told a thousand words. The Tamaraw faithfulls will naturally show indignation. But I expect, pasintabi po, the Eagles to milk the situation down to its last bash-points value.

On the points raised, I think Arwinds subtle mind games got the better of the archers although Yeo's 20+ plus points doesn't show this. I've always taken issue with the way Yeo acts on the floor. At least Wes was just playing mind games. Same with Macmac. Yeo seems to be as arrogant as they come. I always thought he is among the top players in the league. If he only learned to channel his "arrogance". If you watch replays, it really appears like he was just out to pacify or prevent Yeo from doing something stupid. Mukhang sinukuban ng kung anong espiritu :D

The DLSU reaction was ok. Salgado's apology was ok although there is still a hint of not totally accepting blame.

I hope all goes well in the next game. Of course I'll always root against DLSU :D

As expected, the ateneans are the ones capitalizing on this incident. Surprisingly, Ateneo has been more vocal than FEU. Haven't you guys observed that there is obviously more animosity between the DLSU and FEU than between FEU and Ateneo? Is it because the owners of FEU are ateneans and the Montinolas' dream or true objective is to replicate Ateneo in the University belt? Notice the FEU cheers? - mostly sound like those of Ateneo's?

I just hope that the ateneans will just focus on Salgado's antics and not apply a hasty negative generalization on La Salle as whole.

I didn't see much of the game, so I can't say anything about what was going on before the game. But in the moments before the incident, I saw Joseph Yeo saying something to Arwind Santos. I can't read lips and Yeo didn't look angry, so I can't say for sure that he was taunting/trash talking Santos. At any rate, judging from Santos' facial expression, he wasn't paying Yeo any mind.

Suddenly, Mr. Salgado inserts himself between Yeo and Santos. He was acting like the two were about to get into a fight and was trying to prevent any altercations. Santos keeps his cool and doesn't try to argue. He turns away from Mr. Salgado. And then just as he's passing by, Mr. Salgado hits Santos on the back of the head.

(I'm trying to remain objective here, but I'm sorry, that action seemed really "pa-simple" to me.)

(2.)* What are the approrpiate responses: who should respond? why?
I think that all the appropriate responses have been made. Mr. Salgado and DLSU have already made public apologies. However, I have to admit I'm not very pleased with Mr. Salgado's reasons for his intervention. As was clearly seen on tape, Yeo and Santos were not jawing at each other in the moments leading up to the incident. There was no need for Mr. Salgado to force them apart, let alone for him to hit Santos like that.

Also, while certain parties want to see more punishment dealt, in my opinion the UAAP Board's decision to ban him from all UAAP venues for life is enough. The La Salle coach and players cannot be expected to pay for what an assistant team manager did after the game had already ended.

    That's just my opinion.

Re: The Incident After FEU vs. La Salle Game 1

If anything this whole brouhaha could have been prevented had the following people been truly on their toes:

    1) Event security: This is the UAAP Finals. With all of the security people in the venue, how come they did not follow their SOP of hastily escorting one team out and then signalling the other team to follow suit. The time it took for Yeo and Santos to jaw at each other after the game for me was the triggering incident. Event security should have stepped in postehaste, separated the two and then evacuated the teams one at a time.

    2) Game officials, especially committee people: Again, where were all of the UAAP game officials who were supposed to be keeping a sharp eye out for post-game happenings of this nature? The Finals - regardless of who the protagonists are - is always a very emotional affair. Tempers naturally flair, aided or not by all the trash talk. Where were the game officials who were supposed to immediately step in to make sure players did not go beyond the usual handshakes and high fives?

    3) Team officials from BOTH schools: As team officials the conduct of players is squarely the responsibility of ALL team officials, especially those on the bench. Where were all of you when Yeo and Santos were jawing after the game? How come Mr Salgado seemed to be the only one who approached the two players to intervene? To his credit he actually did manage to separate the two. Of course what he did afterwards continues to boggle.

These are exactly the types of situations when these people in particular are supposed to DO THEIR JOBS. Failure to do so results in, well, you all saw the video...

But not until now, with an institution as prestigious as Lasalle, has this issue been put under this kind of scrutiny. Tignan niyo na lang lahat ng sports stories and columns the past two weeks.

The recent events affecting la salle is an unfortunate development for the UAAP. It has cast a shadow of doubt on the recruitment practices, the worthiness of the athletes as students, the integrity of school officials.

It is time for the difficult, but necessary business of cleaning up and restoring the confidence of people in this league.

I know of recent efforts from the UST side to make sure that athletic scholars take care of their academics. Of course there are always headcases that crop up. I hope the professors make sure that these kids get their due.

Sana lang the UAAP should find ways to reward schools with high graduation rate.
