  1. 2nd PSSBC Finals: Baste Beats Beda in Three-Overtime Thriller

Missing the services of meal ticket Arvin Tolentino, the San Beda Red Cubs lost their invincibility.

The San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Staglets pounced on Tolentino’s absence with a thrilling, three-overtime 108-102 victory over their NCAA tormentors, the San Beda Red Cubs, Saturday afternoon in the finals of the 2nd Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship at the SGS Gym in Quezon City.

SSC-R, which lost twice to “five-peating” champion SBC during NCAA Season 89 en route to a third-place overall finish in the 10-team juniors tournament, was ahead by 70-60 with three minutes in regulation behind the shooting of backcourters Lorenzo Navarro and Ryan Costelo but costly misses by the Staglets from the foul line allowed SBC to come back. Red Cub Joshua Caracut subsequently made back-to-back triples to send the game into (first) overtime 75-all.

Following a third trifecta by Caracut that gave the Bedans a precarious 87-85 edge with less than 20 ticks left in the first OT, Navarro hit a short jumper that equalized the count again at 87-all and forced a second extension.

The Staglets were set to claim victory in the second five-minute extension as they led 96-92 with less than a minute left. But to the rescue once more was Caracut. He connected on just the first of three foul throws off an attempt from beyond the arc but following an offensive rebound by the Red Cubs, he banged in a buzzer-beating triple (his fifth since the final minute of regulation) to send the epic 55-minute match to a third OT at 96-all.

SSC-R punched in the first five points in the third extension and outscored SBC, 12-6 to hold on to a five-point win behind Navarro, Rhanzelle Yong and Costelo as the Staglets handed the Red Cubs their first loss iin eight assignments in the three-week high school competitions.

SSC-R wound up with a 6-1 mark, their lone setback coming at the hands of Xavier School (83-81 2 OT) in preliminary-round action.

In the PSSBC finals, the heady Navarro registered a triple-double – 32 points (12-for-27 field shooting, including 4-for-13 from the three-point area), 11 rebounds and 13 assists – to earn Most Valuable Player honors.

Yong, bucking an injury to his face early in the game, contributed 26 points and 21 boards in a game-high 49 minutes. Costelo added 22 markers for Baste, which lost to Hope Christian High School in last year’s PSSBC finals.

San Beda produced five double-digit scorers in Caracut, 30 points (including 6-for-12 from three-point territory); Ranbill Tiongco, 19 points; Marc Diputado, 12 points; Javee Mocon, 11 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks (he struggled mightily in the final two overtimes, though); and John Gumtang, 10 points and 11 reebies.

Hope Christian HS, the 2012 PSSBC titlist, whipped Mapua Institute of Technology, 90-82, to capture third-place honors. Three-point artist Jollo Go topscored for the Soldiers with 20 points.
