SAN JUAN City – Colegio de San Juan de Letran bounced back from a loss in their season debut by beating San Sebastian College, 83-76, at the 94th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games Friday at the FilOil Flying V Centre. The Knights bucked a slow start and turned to veterans Bong Quinto, JP Calvo and Jerrick Balanza to even their win-loss card at 1-1. READ MORE[/b] (][b)

That loss against Perps was hard to take. We really should have won that one; no excuses for that horrendous 7-minute drought that spelled our doom. The boys were too busy playing hero-ball and looking for phantom fouls that they lost focus.

Anyway, it was good that they won against Baste, although I would have wanted them to have won it more convincingly, not just by fending off the hard-charging Stags. Marami pang bubunuin ang mga players natin, at marami pang kakaining bigas ang coaching staff.

Still, arriba pa rin!

The boys tend to relax during big leads resulting to heartbreaking losses or unconvincing wins (filoil against ateneo and Uphr game)

We dropped a couple of close games last yr which has cost us a F4. Third yr coach Napa and staff should now address this lest they get the boot if we fall short again this season.

SAN JUAN City – Colegio de San Juan de Letran's vaunted frontline finally flexed its muscle on a hapless Jose Rizal University, 74-58, at the resumption of the 94th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games Friday at the FilOil Flying V Centre. Christian Fajarito and Larry Muyang took turns at pulverizing the opposition to give the Knights their second straight win after losing in their debut. This win against JRU was extremely satisfying, not because of the big margin, but because the boys showed that they can play as a team. Quinto and Calvo did not really score much, but then, they did not have to. Muyang and Fajarito picked up the slack, largely from pinpoint passes to the paint by their team mates. I liked the spunk shown by Fajarito, Muyang, Taladua and Ambohot in swatting away shots. I also liked the timely steals and assists of Agbong and Mandreza. Sayang lang yung gimme ni Agbong; kinabahan yata, sumablay. Anyway, he will grow, and he will learn.

The only sore point was the erratic play of Bonbon Batiller. I think Batiller is still adjusting to his new role; he's trying too hard to prove himself that he keeps on making terrible shot decisions and errors. Baka dapat hindi muna magkape ito. Tubig lang muna siguro para hindi masyadong hyper.

Levity aside, though, I hope Batiller will eventually become comfortable within Napa's system. I've seen how this guy wreaked havoc in the UAAP. If he can just approximate 75% of what he did for UE, imagine what this can do for the Knights!

MANILA – Colegio de San Juan de Letran gave their home fans a game to remember as they rallied to defeat visiting College of Saint Benilde, 64-60, as the NCAA On Tour made a stop at the Blessed Antonio Varona Gymnasium Thursday. Letran main man Bong Quinto laid the foundation and his teammates finished the job for their third win in a row after dropping their season opener. I thought the Benilde Blazers played very well in this game. It's just that they lost focus in the last three minutes of the game, and our boys were able to come up with timely baskets.

The Knights' free-throw percentages were awful, though. If we had lost the game, it would have been because of the missed free throws (13/23 or 56.52%). We were also awful from the three-point area, making only 10% from there. I hope these stats were only due to the gigil factor, seeing that the boys were playing before a horde of screaming fans right in their home court. We'll see if the percentages hold in the next game, though.

Having said all that, we still have to give credit to the boys for not giving up. Benilde was in control of this game up to the beginning of the fourth quarter, before the boys woke up and began to play more as a team. Of course, Bong Quinto still had to bail us out in the end-game, and we have to thank our lucky stars that his shot went in. Credit should also be given to Larry Muyang and Christian Fajarito, as well as Bonbon Batiller. Muyang kept the Knights within striking distance throughout the game with his pinpoint layups, largely helped by timely passes from the guards. Fajarito kept his fouls in check and ignited the Letran offensive in the second half. Ditto for Batiller, who finally kept his emotions in check and contributed positively to the team.

On to the next game! Arriba! Laban lang nang laban!

Jeo Ambohot is taking a backseat in minutes while newbies LarryMuyang and Fajarito takes care of the inside lane. Only shows the deep bench we are now enjoying. Another big man, Balagasay, can aptly relieve anyone of them in crucial stretches.

Bong Quinto is showing his true worth as a former jrs. Top gun...if he continues w this kind of intensity, he’ll give Cj and Bolick a run for their money in the mvp race.

Arriba letran beat AU and SBU.

4 - 3

Back to back heartbreakers. Isama mo pa yung opening game loss. Three games where our boys choked in the closing seconds. Ginto nanaging bato.

So now all our 3 losses are from the teams above us in the standings puting us at #4 position. We are again in danger of missing the busas csb and au are coming in strong.

Sayang! We could have given Lpu (and sbc) their first loss...one of them wll go undefeated.

Those last two losses were heartbreakers -- the last one against Lyceum especially so. Bad calls, two crucial errors and a missed rebound in the endgame, missed free throws, all spelled doom for the Knights.

Key takeaway from the losses, though, was that we can go toe-to-toe with these guys.

^There are a lot of skilled players in the current team, Ambohot among them. I just wish they have more mental toughness in the end-game to finish off opponents. Calvo, Ambohot and Quinto have shown flashes of this, but we need them to be consistent. We also need them to trust one another more and work as a team, together with new guys Muyang, Fajarito, Batiller, and Yu.

Re Coach Jeff, I think it's universally acknowledged (even by his detractors in the Letran community) that his forte is recruitment. I'm just not sure whether Ambohot was one of his recruits, or if this was due to Coach Aldin.

An aside: Robert Bolick's 50-point explosion last week rightly impressed the NCAA pundits, who quickly pointed to the late La Sallite Lim Eng Beng's record of 55 points in a single game.

As Letranites, however, we should also give notice to our late grand Knight, Ricky Pineda, who also scored 52 points in one game. If I remember correctly, Lim Eng Beng owns the two top one-game scores of 55 and 54, then comes Pineda with 52, and now comes Bolick.

Wala lang. Just thought I'd mention it.

We wish Jerrick speedy recovery. Ive heard too that by early Nov he can be back in action but Fr. Vic Calvo said in a radio program the Colegio will not take such risk, so most probably we’ll see him next season on his final year.

A sad turn of events but might be a blessing as he will become a rallying point in this seasons campaign.

Good luck on next weeks crucial games against SBU and CSB.

A couple of good news items to balance off that sorry loss against the Red Lions -- one was the win against Mapua, the other was the benign result of Jerrick Balanza's tumor biopsy.

Let's go for the win this afternoon vs. the EAC Generals to solidify our hold on third!

Great win yesterday over the EAC Generals, primarily because we saw breakout games for Jeremiah Taladua, Fran Yu, and Nico Galvelo. They were able to provide the offensive muscle for the Knights in lieu of usual suspects Bong Quinto and JP Calvo, who had an off-day.

The box scores: (from Tiebreaker Times)

CSJL 91 –– Taladua 15, Galvelo 15, Yu 13, Ambohot 10, Muyang 9, Quinto 8, Fajarito 8, Calvo 5, Celis 5, Mandreza 2, Agbong 1, Balagasay 0, Pambid 0, Banez 0.

EAC 82 — Garcia 20, Laminou 16, Maguliano 16, Tampoc 11, Bugarin 6, Corilla 5, Neri 3, Mendoza 3, Cadua 2, Natividad 0, Gonzales 0.

Quarterscores: 18-15, 36-32, 67-54, 91-82.

Yes, thanks to all those who helped, including Bedan and JRU alumni and players!

Re the game today vs. Lyceum, that one nearly gave me a heart attack! Bong Quinto, shackled by four fouls, went beast mode and scored the most significant points in the end game, including the go-ahead baskets. Larry Muyang was in high gear all throughout the game, scoring on 11 of 12 tries to topscore for the Knights. JP Calvo had a sputtering start, but went on to redeem himself starting the second quarter onwards. He suffered from cramps, though, which somehow dampened his efforts toward the end.

It was good the referees reviewed JC Marcelino's supposed three-point shot at the end, and then downgraded it to a long two. Thank God for technology! This more than made up for that earlier grievous missed call by the refs (CJ Perez scoring on a fastbreak layup over JP Calvo, despite not dribbling at all after he crossed the half-court line).

We missed a ton of free throws today, and at times, our guards (especially Batiller) dribbled too much in traffic and lost the ball as a result. Booboos like those nearly cost us the game.

Still and all, we can't complain too much. A win is still a win. Hopefully, we should be able to sweep the rest of the games and finish the round on a winning note! Arriba!

Marcelino playing hero ball opting to launch his last shot from the three pt area... buti na lang di pumasok kung hindi wala sana irereviewyun mga refs. Likewise Batiller could have cost us the game with his fumble in our last possession.

Our graduating veterans stepped up when it mattered most while the 3 bench players who made a name for themselves (Galvelo, Yu and Taladua) were erratic...maybe nervous during big games such as this.

Another win and we’re back sa f4.

Onward Kabalyeros!

Note to Coach Jeff: I'm still holding you to your promise. Hindi lang Final Four iyon.

CJN is no politician, so he'll keep his promise.:positive:

The game vs Perps showed the maturity of the team. Calmado all the way and no end-game collapse.

Sayang naman if the ALTAS will be deprived of the chance to play in the FF due to the "ligang labas" controversy involving Aurin and Charcos. But rules are rules. Many many years ago our Squires romped over all the teams and was a shoo in for the Finals and even the Crown. But one player played in a "ligang labas" and we forfeited the games, and landed in the bottom while being on top most of the season. But again rules are rules.

But there's still hope as NO protest was not raised on the last day of the games during the first round.

Also, on a technicality, there was NO protest filed by CSB assailing the "negligence" of the school in allowing the students to play in a tournament with a surrogate team representing UPHR. CSB filed a letter of inquiry. An inquiry is NOT a protest. So there, let the Altas play in the FF.

Rules are rules. File a protest not an inquiry. But if the Perps are DQ'd, the person responsible for the fiasco should be fired.

Nuff said.

knightrider,

I agree with all the points you raised (especially about Coach Jeff not being a politician - hehehe). Re Perps and the ligang labas issue, methinks the NCAA member-schools are pussy-footing around the issue because they don't want to appear like spoil-sports. It would really be a bummer if Perps would be eliminated from the Final Four because of this.

But then, I agree that this should be protested (most likely by Benilde). This happened to Letran HS before (the Alvarez fiasco). Fair is fair, after all.

Balagasay is also a remnant of the 2015 champion team. He has beefed up since then but lost some degree of mobility in and around the shaded lane. Yes, more power to Quinto, Calvo, Mandreza and Taladua in their future endeavors.
It was a good fight the Knights put up. But we were outfoxed, outplayed and outclassed by the Pirates. Nay, not outclassed, we're not in the same class as them yesterday. Talent wise, perhaps, yes. But the "it" factor we did not have. The pirates were oozing with it. You can see that in their body language and they way they comported themselves on the court. They played loose and were mentally tough. Really hard to beat, even with Calvo playing. Special mention to Taladua. A transferee from Lyceum, who shown himself to have been fully transfused with Dugong Arriba. We're a formidable team next year if Balanza takes on the mantra of the Grand Knight (like Mark Cruz from Alas, and Quinto from Nambatac). Batiller needs to be more composed with no more hot dogging. Yu needs to add more poundage. And of course, the unfathomable "it" factor during the Ayo year must return. Arriba!.

10-27-2018, 12:36 PM
BTW, the "it" factor during Ayo's year is the "kaya natin" or "atin na ito" mindset. Those words, "guys, atin an ito" in the finals game 3 overtime period still resonates in my ears. Arriba pa rin ng Arriba!

I think Lyceum prepared very well for us, while we didn't. When they turned on the jets in the third quarter, we were left gasping for air. We just didn't have the answer to their trapping defense, which I thought was ironic. It didn't help that our back-up guard Fran Yu got easily rattled and surrendered a lot of balls, leading to easy Lyceum breakaways.

Anyway, the boys did play their darnedest. Thanks to graduating players Bong Quinto, JP Calvo, Jeremiah Taladua, and Alex Mandreza! Good luck in the pros! Be sure to finish your college degrees!

As for the new guys like Batiller, Yu, Celis, Agbong, Banez: I'm hoping that the "never-give-up-never-give-in" spirit will rub off on them, as it did on JP Calvo and Taladua. I like what I'm seeing from transferees Muyang and Fajarito, and I hope their good performance will continue along with Jeo Ambohot.

Next year, we may see the likes of Jordan Sta. Ana (ex-UST Tiger, ex-NU Bullpup), Daryl Pascual, and that tall SSCR transferee crack the lineup.

Laban lang. Arriba!
