UAAP PREVIEW: FEU Lady Tamaraws temper expectations despite V-League success
From: Mei-Lin Lozada
•November 18, 2014, 10:11 pm

Key losses: Gyzelle Sy, Marie Toni Basas

Key additions: Toni Rose Basas, Jerrilli Malabanan, Healther Guinoo

Key holdovers: Bernadette Pons, Remy Palma, Geneveve Casugod, Tin Agno, Yna Papa

Main goal: Final Four

Last year’s finish: Fifth

Preseason tournaments joined: Shakey’s V-League First Conference (March 23- May 25)

IT may have won a major tournament in the offseason, but Far Eastern University is setting the bar lower in Season 77 of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

Coming off a Shakey’s V-League First Conference championship conquest earlier this year, the Lady Tamaraws say they will be satisfied with a Final Four finish in the country’s premier collegiate league.

That’s because FEU had former Lady Tamaraws star Rachel Anne Daquis and Central Philippine University’s Jovelyn Gonzaga, both now Philippine Army mainstays, as guest players to lead their title campaign in the V-League.

With FEU regulars led by hard-hitting Bernadette Pons, twin towers Remy Palma and Geneveve Casugod, libero Tin Agno and setter Yna Papa back at the forefront, Lady Tamaraws coach Shaq delos Santos is aiming to book a return to the semifinals after a two-year absence.

“No. 1 target namin Final Four,” said the former University of Santo Tomas champion mentor, who has yet to bring UAAP success to the Morayta-based school. “Kung talagang ibibigay ni God ang iba pa much better.”

FEU still owns the most number of women’s titles with 29 - 15 more than closest pursuer University of Santo Tomas, although its last championship came in 2008.

“Sa coaching staff, ang tiwala namin sa lahat, binibigay din namin tiwala namin sa rookies at kung sino pang part ng nasa lineup,” said Delos Santos, who expects Toni Rose Basas, Jerrilli Malabanan, and Healther Guinoo to beef up the already intact lineup after providing significant contributions for FEU in the V-League.

The 5-foot-9 Basas, younger sister of former FEU player Marie Toni and elevated from FEU Diliman, can play either the middle or outside hitter positions.

Filipino-American Jerrilli Malabanan, who served a one-year residency with the Lady Tams, is also versatile enough to play the middle and outside hitter positions at 5-10.

Heather Guinoo, who stands 5-7, is an Imus Institute product who can also provide power hits for FEU.

Despite a promising roster, De los Santos still is wary of the top teams especially defending champion Ateneo, powerhouse La Salle, National U, University of Santo Tomas and Adamson.

The FEU mentor also does not discount University of the Philippines and University of the East as contenders. UP and UE finished seventh and eighth, respectively, last year, but UP defeated FEU in the second round of the eliminations.

“Contender ang defending champion Ateneo, nandyan pa ang La Salle, UST, Adamson, NU,” he said.

“Ang UP tinalo kami last year, ang UE nagpalakas din. Paghahandaan namin ang lahat kasi depende pa rin sa igagalaw ng kalaban pag nakundisyon ‘yan di mo pa rin masabi.”

FEU’s first assignment will be University of the Philippines on November 23

MANILA, Philippines –The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws started their UAAP Season 77 women's volleyball campaign on a strong note as they defeated the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons in straight sets Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.

Rem Palma and Bernadeth Pons led the way for the Lady Tams as they grabbed a 25-14, 26-24, and 25-20 win to join defending champions Ateneo de Manila University and University of St. Tomas as early leaders.

Pons had 15 points, while Palma added 10 markers as FEU edged UP in attacks, 35-27, and aces, 5-3. FEU also collected 30 points off UP's errors.

UP, considered as a dark horse contender for a Final Four spot this season, led in the second set but gave up a late run to FEU. Trailing 24-25, the Lady Maroons still had a chance to tie but a mishit by Chester Ong sealed the win for the Lady Tamaraws.

Nicole Tiamzon, no longer serving as UP's setter, scored 12 points while Ong finished with seven markers.

Tams outlast Warriors; bag first win of the season
Written by: Migs Flores
2014/11/30 2:14 PM

Relying heavily on their unpredictable offense, FEU earned its first win of the season after inching past the UE Warriors, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 16-25, 15-12 at the San Juan Arena.

With FEU jimmying up multiple uncharacteristic errors, the UE Warriors were able to mount a steady offensive assault led by rookie wunderkind, Edward Campusano who top-scored the match with his 26 points. It was FEU’s devastating combination plays that overwhelmed UE’s blocking and floor defense. Eight of FEU’s players scored five points or more with four of them scoring in double-digits.

Errors from both sides marred the first two sets of the match which the teams split. FEU would sub-in benched hitters Clifford Miranda and Franco Camcam, who came up huge for the rowdy Tams as they had 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Tams would then find their grooves in the following sets with FEU bombarding the Warriors with multiple spikes from all sides in the third set and UE feeding their rookie scoring machine continually in the fourth chapter.

FEU would wrestle the momentum away from the Warriors in the deciding set and would never look back as their veterans led them to an easy set win.

High-flying Greg Dolor led all Tamaraws in scoring with his 13 points, 8 coming off spikes, 3 from blocs and 2 from aces. UE’s Edward Campusano’s 26 points came off 52 spike attempts. Campusano received help from team captain Ace Mandani who contributed 12 points but he unfortunately injured his ankle in the final play of the match. UE’s starting Libero, Carlo Almario also left the game in the second set after suffering an undisclosed injury.

The Scores:

FEU- Dolor 13, Miranda 11, Camcam 10, Cayaban 10, Paler 7, Refugia 6, Gacutan 6, Barrica 5, Marmieto (L) 0

UE- Campusano 26, Mandani 12, Molina 5, Christian 5, Adviento 3, Magdaong 3, Alba 2, Saguin 1, Pron (L) 0, Alamario (L) 0

FEU is 2 - 1 after defeating UE in straight sets. Nothing to be proud of. Our two wins came from teams that are not considered contenders for this season.
