So Yankie stayed in La Salle after all. And so did Gab.

I got to talk with Sega yesterday and he said Mapua-B beat Benilde-B yesterday. Regarding Enderun's game, he said it was "not bad... it went very bad"

Para kay Kaibigang Sidestep:

Mas talented 'yung grupo nina Tratter-Sargent-Mustre kesa sa current Team B ng Lasalle. Since Mbala is still around huwag na natin muna siya isama sa usapin.

Tratter is better than Daryl Pascual in that Tratter is a stronger, much better athlete, built very well, great leaping ability.

Nung una kong narinig si Pascual akala ko second coming in Ian Sangalang ang makikita ko, turns out malayo pala kay Sangalang. Just to be clear may laro si Pascual, just not a Sangalang. Si Ian nung first year pa lang sa Baste magaling na, may galaw, ganda ng footwork, ganda ng kamay, kahit payat may lakas enough. Itong Pascual I think is a good year away from being a legit inside operating big man. Baka din naman hindi 100% healthy.

Si Larry Muyang talagang Larry Muyang pa rin. Dead wringer pa din ni Wangbu. At siempre hindi pa din nagbago laro kahit na mukhang bumigat by some 20 pounds. Sayang si Muyang, looks like a legit 6'5", mukhang nasa 210 pounds na, may konting galaw naman, just that he seems discombobulated moving as part of a five on the floor. May mga ganyang player eh, naliligaw kapag may sistema.

salamat po sa prognosis niyo po sir joe.

pero sir, based on what i have seen last saturday, from a neutral standpoint, do you agree na Pascual's game is kinda similar to Arwind Santos, yung kilos, yung range, yung defensive versatility, though hindi naman siya ganung physically gifted like Arwind. how will he matchup up with Arvin Tolentino? do you think that Pascual can stand out and be the best local player for Lasal in the future? will he be a star or will he be just a good role player on a good team? and if if you had your way who would you rather have, Daryl or KMark?

May nakapagsabi nga sa akin na pwedeng maging Arwind-type si Daryl in the future. Ewan ko lang ha, pero sa nakita ko na in fairness one game lang naman mukhang 'yung future na 'yon is at least one year away, realistically baka two years away pa nga. Kahit si Maeirhofer nung una kong nakita athlete na athlete eh, Daryl just didn't give me the same impression.

And no, I would not trade KMark for Daryl, or any other local non-UAAP big man at the moment. Kung KMark for Keith Datu payag ako, hehehe!

until I saw Daryl play last Saturday, I was relying on the description of the gentlemen here in gameface, who had some sort of consensus about Daryl being the next Ian Sangalang nga, turns out na kamukha niya lang talaga at kababayan niya, pero ang skillset medyo malayo kasi perimeter based ang laro niya, mukha ngang hindi athletic si Daryl, pero his game isn't floorbound either, because some of his points came from tip-ins and follow-ups something that a guy his size with decent hops can do. the Arwind comparisons were there kasi I saw that he has range that extends to the 3 point line and that he has defensive versatility that can rival Yutien Andrada, the kid if he is that young as they claim, might become a key player for La Salle down the road when he bulks up and better understands the nuances of the game.

Sir Joe if I may ask you, is it possible to see a Daryl Pascual-Arvin Tolentino matchup in the near future? how will one fair against the other and vice versa in their individual matchups?

Joescoundrel
08-12-2014, 01:49 PM
^ If Daryl is lined up next year we will definitely see an Arvin-Daryl match-up. That should be a good match kasi hindi naman stud athlete si Arvin, pero high-skilled player. Daryl is a better athlete, and if he grows stronger within the year he might be a bigger challenge than Arvin would expect.

Ateneo, Enderun, Arellano book wins in Fr. Martin Cup

Updated August 26, 2014 - 2:25pm

MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion Ateneo, Enderun College and the Arellano University pulled of contrasting wins Monday in the resumption of the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus in Mendiola.

Hubert Cani topscored for 16 points as defending champion Ateneo smothered College of St. Benilde, 75-55, and coasted to their fourth straight win in Group B of this cagefest, which is supported by Bauerfeind and Wang’s Basketball.

The Enderun Titans, led by Jordan Rios with 34 points, took charge early and subdued the La Salle Green Archers, 81-63, and picked up their second win in five games in Group A.

Daryl Capara scored the winning basket in the last 15 seconds for the Arellano Chiefs, who won over Letran-A, 65-62, and improved at 1-1 in Group A.

Cani struck hard in the third period, pouring in 16 points during third quarter run which allowed the Blue Eagles to move away by 17 points, 57-40.

In other matches, Dave Cabanilla made 23 points for the Adamson Baby Falcons as they beat the Arellano Braves, 80-76, and San Benilde prevailed over Far Eastern University, 66-60, in the junior division.

Last Saturday, the Technological Institute of the Philippines-A Engineers swamped St. Michael College-Laguna, 102-11, with Raymond Alvarado hitting 17 points, while Mark Tamayo had 17 points for Angeles University Foundation as they won over TIP-B, 79-69.

^^^ Don't be shocked with the Enderun-Lasalle result. Benoit Mbala served out a suspension after drawing four technical fouls in their previous game. No word yet if that is just a one-game suspension or more, considering those were four technicals.

sir Sam, lasalle has new PG doing residency right(forgot the name)? how do you compare him to Cani and Pinggoy?

As MrJumbo has mentioned, you might be referring to Josh Torralba, the Fil-Am transfer from EAC. Torralba was on Joe's radar some two years ago when we were watching an EAC-Letran game. Torralba is a tallish combo-guard who has a very good skill set. He can drive, pull up, hit the long ball, facilitate, help advance against pressure, provide quick help on D.

His main problem is that he does everything at a high level but not exactly at an elite level, i.e. he's no Cool Cat, he might not even be JV Casio-good. Since he is going to a loaded Lasalle team that's just fine. Going to the pros though might not be a sure shot for him just yet. He's not exceptionally fast driving, like say Roi Sumang, or even going end to end with the ball, like say Mike Tolomia. But he is very well built for a guard, probably 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, and he is certainly a very good upgrade over Almond Vosotros, the man he will replace. I see some of the FEU-version-Denok Miranda in him, which means he will be a very good UAAP player on a very good UAAP team.

That puts him in a different category from Hubert Cani and even Jerie Pingoy. Cani is a crafty not-quite-the-ideal-size combo-guard type who needs to lose that "beer gut" and get faster and develop better springs. Cross training with Plyo under Raul Banzon might be in order.

If Torralba and Cani play one-on-one right now Torralba would eat Cani alive. If they played three-on-three with Daryl Pascual and Yankee Haruna on Torralba's side, then KMark Carino and Adrian Wong on Cani's side, that might be tilted just a bit to Cani's favor.

Lasalle's pointguards of the future for now are Terrence Mustre and Kib Montalbo, and whoever else they recruit to supplant these two over the next couple of years. Given how iffy these two have proven so far, Torralba may have to see more minutes at the 1 than the 2 when he plays in the UAAP in Season 78.

thanks sir Sam! much appreciated. Given the way I've seen Pinggoy played, really excited on how he and Cani will play the pointguard rotation for us in the next 5 years. DJ Henderson, I assume will have to replace Keifer in 2016. We still have Cole Micek going here in the coming months. Our backcourt rotation is stronger than ever.

Altas, Wildcats score wins in Fr. Martin Cup

(philstar.com) |

Updated September 3, 2014 - 10:57am

MANILA, Philippines – Cagers from the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, and the National College of Business and Arts eked out contrasting wins last Saturday in the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus in Mendiola.

Akhuetie Bright made 16 points, Chris Elopre had 13 and Prince Eze shot 12 points for the Altas, who romped off to their fourth straight victory in Group A of this cagefest supported by Bauerfeind supports and orthoses, and medical compression stockings, and Wang’s Basketball.

Marlon Junio and Jeff Disquitado fired 18 points each as they powered the NCBA Wildcats to an 86-82 triumph over Emilio Aguinaldo College, and their second victory in four games in Group B.

In the junior division, San Sebastian College and Mapua Institute won over their foes, with the SSC Staglets putting away University of Santo Tomas, 75-69, and moving ahead in Group with win no. 3.

The Mapua Red Robins, led by Mario Uson with 15 points, now have a 2-1 slate in Group B after they put away EAC-ICA, 87-45.

The Altas held the Chiefs to just eight points in the first period, and moved away, 23-8, at the end of the first period behind two triples from Elopre.

The Wildcats leaned on two charities from Jeffrey Limpin in the last two seconds to keep the EAC Generals at bay.

MANILA, Philippines – The Mapua Cardinals and the Enderun College Titans are in the senior division semifinals of the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament.

They earned slots to the semis last Thursday after the Cardinals turned back the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 88-87, and the Titans put away San Beda-B, 71-69, at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus in Mendiola.

Tora de la Rosa scored the winning basket with 14.4 seconds for the Cardinals, who arranged a semis clash on Tuesday (Oct. 28) with the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in this cagefest, which is supported by Bauerfeind supports and outhouses, and medical compression stockings, and Wang’s Basketball.

In the junior division quarterfinals, Jason Celis knocked in a jumper with 9.7 seconds to go to lift the Adamson Baby Falcons to 75-73 win over Far Eastern University.

The Baby Falcons went on to set up a semis match with the NU Bullpups, who outplayed San Sebastian, 78-60.

The junior division semifinals is tentatively set on Nov. 4.

Xavier School, led by Tyler Tio with 17 points, defeated University of Santo Tomas, 77-71, to move into a match-up with the Arellano Braves, who leaned on the heroics of Charles Torrejos to stop San Benildo, 89-87, in overtime.

Willy Kamguia banged in two crucial charities with 13.5 seconds, sending Titans to a semis showdown with Red Lions.

Kenneth Magboo led the Cards with 15 points while JR Raflores struck with 18.

The Titans drew 16 points from Arvin Bernardo, while Turingan had 14.

The Red Lions won over National University, 76-69, while the Generals stopped Technological Institute of the Philippines, 84-81, in earning their seats in the semis.

MAPUA defeated Enderun College, 92-82, on Thursday to capture the 12th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup title at the San Beda gym, providing a ray of hope for the long-suffering NCAA team.

Fil-American cager Stephen Que had a game-high 27 points while Tura Dela Rosa added 21 for the Cardinals, who have hit rock-bottom in the country's oldest collegiate league.

Mapua's Andretti Stevens earned the Joey Lim Memorial MVP trophy.

Que and Dela Rosa broke a 58-all deadlock with a five-point swing in the third quarter to set the stage for the Cardinals' breakaway.

Jordan Rios scored 24 points for the Titans, but he was limited to only two points in the final period.
