MANILA, Philippines -- The Ateneo Blue Eagles and the Far Eastern University Tamaraws outplayed separate rivals Saturday at the start of the 10th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament in St. Placid gymnasium of San Beda College in Mendiola, Manila.

Joma Adornado, son of former PBA Hall of Famer William “Bogs” Adornado, fired a game-high 27 points to lead the Blue Eagles to an 86-76 beating of Trinity University of Asia Stallions.

Adornado asserted himself at the start of the second half, touching off a 10-0 run with two triples.

As his father Bogs watched quietly from the gallery, Adornado’s treys allowed the Blue Eagles to overcome a 39-44 halftime deficit and eventually turn the game around with a 49-44 lead.

Fil-Canadian John Lasa and JP Siarot then struck with a pair of lay-ups, allowing the Loyola dribblers to take 60-53 spread.

Nicole Bolos led the Stallions with 27 points.

The Tamaraws, meanwhile, leaned on two timely triples from Giovanni Cruz and Rod Dennison to lift them past the Angeles University Foundation (AUF) Great Danes, 76-73, in this cagefest which is supported by Amazing Playground.

Adam Mohammed shot 15 points for the Tams while Dennison contributed 14.

In the junior division, Mark Tamayo and Griller Garcia made 21 points apiece as they led the AUF Junior Danes to an 80-76 win over Trinity.

Where can we get the game schedules for Fr. Martin?

Joescoundrel
07-27-2012, 02:37 PM
^ Tournament organizers do not issue a complete schedule for the entire tournament, and as such only issue schedules every couple weeks or so. Aside from what is posted in Gameface, the organizers also send out schedules to the media people covering the Fr Martin Cup. Those are what we post as we get them. Sometimes there are some last-minute changes, i.e. one team will not be available all of a sudden for a given schedule. In cases such as these, that game is either postponed to a future schedule or another team is brought in to play in the unavailable team's stead.

Condolence to the family of Joey Lim who passed away earlier today. He molded a generation of basketball superstars through his work with the old Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and today's Father Martin tournaments. Joey Lim left behind a very big void that will be hard to fill up.

With Arafat seeing action in the Unigames in Bacolod, Mammie joined hands with Desmond Berestain and Renz Palma as the Warriors quickly erected a 23-6 spread in the first quarter.

Gino Jumao-as, who had 15 points, then attacked the hoop in succession with Lord Casajeros, and both helped UE stay ahead by eight, 32-24, in the second canto.

As the Chiefs threatened 36-39 in the third period, a triple from Ralph Olivarez and a drive from Jumao-as got the Warriors pulling away again, and maintaining a 56-47 advantage at the end of the third.

From Peter Atencio:

The University of the East Warriors forced the San Sebastian College-A Stags into four big turnovers to pull off a 77-72 overtime win Monday afternoon, and clinch the senior division crown of the 10th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup.

Six-foot-five American cager Charlies Mammie showed the way with 22 points for the Warriors when action ended at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

Earlier, Hope Christian School drew 20 points from Arjan de la Cruz as they prevailed over Chiang Kai Shek, 68-60, for the junior division title.

Ralph Olivarez, who had 17 points, settled the issue in the last 16.7 seconds for the Warriors, who barged into the finals following a 78-70 beating of the Arellano University Chiefs last Friday.

The 21-year old business management sophomore first scored on a putback off RR de Leon’s miss in the last 16.7 seconds to put the Warriors up by three, 75-72, in the last 16.7 seconds.

Olivarez then cashed in on a traveling error by Gio Vergara with and two charities off Pusiquit’s foul in the last 7.6 seconds to help the Warriors earn the crown with their five-point advantage as time expired.

“Credit goes to the players. They wanted to win the championship,” said team B coach Bai Cristobal, who jointly calls the shots for the squad with Bong Ramos.

Jaymar Perez led the Stags with 24 points, and he put the game into an extra five minutes when he scored off his own miss in the last 17 seconds, 65-all.

The Stags, who made it to the finals with their 73-68 win over the Josen Rizal University, were enjoying a 70-69 edge in the last 3:05.

They lost the momentum when Perez and Vergara gave up the ball twice in succession, Jason Pusiquit missed a shot and Bradwin Guinto fumbled with the ball in the remaining three minutes.

The series of miscues allowed the Warriors to grab the momentum, and move ahead, 73-70, off Cameroonian Mustapha Arafat’s two charities and drive with 51.7 seconds to go.

Guinto tried to keep the Stags in the thick of the fight with his layup in the last 34 seconds, 72-73, but the Warriors found a way to keep their distance 18 seconds later.
