To those who are not familiar with Trinity University, that would be the school along E Rodriguez in QC right next to the old St Luke's Medical Center.

If you are coming from Cubao / Gateway just take any FX or jeepney bound for Quiapo, Mabini, Buendia or Taft, those will take you right to the main gate of Trinity.

Those who are driving should be prepared to park at the car park building of St Luke's and walk a bit to Trinity since Trinity does not have big parking spaces.

This is the revised schedule forwarded by the Fr Martin Cup. Please disregard the original schedules posted above, and take note of the changes. Apparently the stars were not aligned correctly for the other schools so they decided they could not risk playing on certain days and times as originally scheduled.

With the late entry of the team that won one less game last season than the season previous in the UAAP, schedule changes somehow became necessary, so please take note that Mapua will be playing NU and not UE A as originally scheduled above.

NU big men Troy Rosario and Henri Beteyane seem to ahve improved quite a bit over this offseason. Not only are they moving better without the ball, they're individual skills have also improved a lot, certainly they are showing better footwork, better handles, better hands on catching and putting up shots.

Sir Joe according to some UE faithful who watched the game UE vs STI last saturday hindi daw impressive yung win ng Red Warriors. Some of the new faces in the lineup eh mga guards yung import na 6' 6" from africa (may laro daw ito) hindi ginamit. Pero yung isang import na hilaw pa yung laro ang nakababad. In other words there are no show of force and might at the hard court mukhang cellar dweller na naman UE RW in Season 75. Walang sign that the King Warrior has arrived in the team :(

Not really impressive coz STI was even playing with most players from their Juniors team and some bench players from their NAASCU runner-up team..

UE's two new Africans are very young, with the younger one being only 17 years old, but both are tall, long and athletic. Apparently they both play more perimeter than post, which means unless they are both dead-eye shooters and swooping slashers that they will be of little help to shoring up the UE interior. They will make good targets for Roi Sumang assists, but having a strong inside presence is curcial to UAAP basketball success. Looks like Coach Jerry Codinera has his work cut out for him to try and turn these two into willing bangers in the lane.

looks like another Suguitan & Napo both stands more or less 6'7" but not a force to reckon with in the paint. hope that we develop them as a post player and a banger down low

I'm sure Jerry Codinera, in my opinion among the Top 4 or 5 bigs ever in Philippine basketball, can work something out with the two new Africans. They don't have to become Reil Cervantes or Pipo Nuondou types of bangers. If they can at least play enough on either of the low blocks, go after rebounds and learn to pitch outlet passes pwede na, think along the lines of Aldrech Ramos or Russell Escoto, ok ng ganun.

^ The Fatima-UE game was a cardiac affair, with Fatima overhauling as much as an eight-point UE lead to go up 52-42 late in the third period. Roi Sumang had a bad game, lots of miscues and turnovers. Ironically it was former Fatima pointguard Dan Alberto who nailed the winning trey. Alberto almost became the goat when he muffed a pointblank stab off a feed from Sumang. Former UP Maroon Dexter Rosales almost salvaged the game for Fatima with a final buzzer-beating trey of his own, which unfortunately was ruled not counted since he had not yet established himself fully coming from outside on the sideline. Fatima relied on a good defense and outside shooting to stay toe to toe with UE, led by veteran Mark Aque and newcomer Jon Rivera. UE however just bought the better breaks in the last 30 seconds of the contest, especially Alberto.

It will be Letran-San Beda in one of the semifinal games of the Fr Martin.

NU is waiting for the winner of the winner of the Arellano-UE game this Thursday.

Apparently UE head coach Jerry Codinera was part of the PBA Legends who had a couple of exhibition games in Her Majesty's Capital. Proceeds of these games would go straight to the victims of Sendong and the last big earthquake courtesy of the PBA social outreach programs.

Fr Martin Cup semifinals are this Sunday 19 February at Trinity Gym, starting at 12:00 noon. Admission is free but those with cars should go a little earlier since parking there is limited.

With Koy Banal as the Chiefs' head coach, di magkukulang sa magandang payo ang bata.

2008 ng huling maglaro si Agovida para sa Light Bombers. After seeing the kid in 3 games in this FMC Open, his inside game is trully fun to watch.

Pero ilang taon na lumipas ang tabas ng katawan niya ay payatin pa rin. Once he gets scouted, things will get more difficult for him on court.

It will be an all-NCAA finale for the 2011-12 Fr Martin Cup Open title.

Reigning NCAA champion San Beda drew on the game-long hustle of new recruit Julius Armon and the end-game steadiness of veteran pointguard Anjoe Caram to outlast a tough Letran squad 64-61.

With Kevin Alas leading the way, the Knights led throughout the first half. Alas, fresh out of a month-long training program in the United States, displayed a new all-around game, driving hard into the gut of the Red Lion defense and involving his teammates with crisp passes off their high screen-for-the-screener sets.

San Beda tried to make a quick run to start the third period but Alas, Jam Cortes, Mark Cruz and Joel Jonathan Belorio all took turns to stymie the attempted Red Lion rallies. Armon however soon caught fire, going on a personal 7-0 run to bring San Beda within 50-52 by the end of the quarter.

Letran ran out of gas and out of ammunition in the payoff fourth period even as the Red Lions found their own stride. They turned the tables around quickly enough, going up as much as 10 points themselves. Caram, Kyle Pascual, Jake Pascual and Rome Dela Rosa joined the fray and got going on the early offense and transition opportunities. Alas and Mark Cruz led one last rally to bring Letran within 56-53, but poor freethrow shooting helped seal the fate of the Knights.

Armon was the only Red Lion in double figures with 16 points, but Caram had two crucial shots in the last minute and a half to seal the victory for San Beda. Alas had 14 for the Knights to go with seven assists.

Arellano had to pull an escape act of their own against a loaded National University side 59-56.

Both sides had ugly starts iall throughout the first half. Passing miscues, blown defensive assignments, muffed layups, forced jumpers front-rimming off the goal, dribbles off the foot were all highlights for the first half. New Arellano head coach Koy Banal was particularly incensed at new recruit Adam Serjue, who was either out of position guarding the perimeter in their match-up zone, or losing his man on the switch.

Luckily enough for the Chiefs though, the Bulldogs were joining in the display of horrendous basketball. NU was constantly pitching passes that were too long, dribbling into waiting hands, and losing the ball on what should have been sure rebounds off both boards.

Although this was supposed to be a showcase of transnational talent for both schools, it was the hoegrown pure Pinoy players who kept the game intersting. Vergel Zulueta and Rocky Acidre were getting it done for the Chiefs, while Reden Celda and Gelo Alolino were holding steady for the Bulldogs. The first half mercifully ended with the Bulldogs up by two points at a mind-bending 22-20.

The entirety of the second half became a battle of mini-runs. Serjue conspired with Chris Okpe, Zulueta, Kieth Agovida and James Forrester to erect a 31-24 lead. NU sued for time and knotted the count at 42-all behind new African import Alfred Aroga. Agovida then went to work along with Okpe to keep the Bulldogs from busting out. Agovida tended both boards with aplomb and ran the break relentlessly. He was also a one-man defensive web against the entire NU forward corps, particularly getting in Jeff Javillonar's face.

Agovida would go on to seal the win for the Chiefs with two crucial defensive boards, a couple of pressure-packed freethrows and a key block on Javillonar in the last 3.9 seconds.

Serjue led the Chiefs with 15 points. Agovida had 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, while Okpe had 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. No Bulldog made double figures, with Aroga getting nine points and nine boards.

Sir Joe, How are the two Fil-Can boys in Arellano playing?

Adam Serjue is the real deal, not yet in the same league as Rey Parks, Julius Armon and Chris Newsome, but could be at that level in as little as a year or a year and a half. He'll have to get past arguing his case to his coaches though, and just listen and play through it. He is certainly far better than any pure Pinoy guard not named Ronald Pascual.

James Forrester is all-hustle but little production. He runs hard end to end, and knows how to defend and is not bashful about entering the mosh pit known as the lane. He also crashes both boards willingly. On offense he has shown some range all the way out to the arc, and runs hard to fill the lanes, very good runner-jumper, has yet to define his game though, might be an imported version more along the lines of Nino Gelig rather than Cyrus Baguio.

Dion Holts is a well-built 6-foot-5 to 6-foot-6 athlete who is also all-hustle and little production. When Chris Okpe is scoring and rebounding and blocking shots and you are not, there must be something terribly wrong with you. He may need many repetitions to find his place in the Koy Banal scheme of things, works hard but just does not get anything productive across his name on the stat sheet.

Speaking of Okpe, how is it he is now good enough to merit dump plays and baseline plays for him under Banal and could not even get garbage minuets with Leo Isaac?

Looks like the true big-name recruit of Arellano is none other than Banal.

Letran, more or less with the same personnel, has improved as far as defense and teamwork (yes K. Alas has learned to pass) and execution are concerned. But it seems it always loses steam in the 4th quarter and has lost many games in the final quarter in many games in the NCAA. One reason is their superstars seem to be overly tired in the end.

Red Lions, Lady Bulldogs reign in Martin Cup
(The Philippine Star) Updated February 27, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The defending champion San Beda Red Lions clinched a three-peat in the men’s division while the National U Lady Bulldogs claimed their first ever women’s crown Saturday in the eighth Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup basketball finals.

Jake Pascual banged in a game-high 20 points, while Julius Armon hit 16 points, Romeo de la Rosa and Ola Adeogun fired 15 and 14 points, respectively, to help the Red Lions breeze past the Arellano University Chiefs, 89-66, in the winner-take-all men’s finals at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

The Lady Bulldogs squandered a 14-point advantage, and relied on a triple from Ma. Teresa Pama to bail them out of trouble and bag their first ever women’s plum with a 72-67 triumph over the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers.

Baser Amer provided 10 points for the Red Lions, and he made four points during a decisive 10-0 run in the last two minutes of the second period.

Amer’s timely baskets allowed the Red Lions to turn the tables around on the Chiefs, who last led 28-27, off a triple by Rocky Acidre with 5:02 to go.

With the Chiefs’ prized recruit Keith Agovida held to just nine points all throughout, the Red Lions had little trouble moving further ahead after they posted a 12-point, 42-30 spread off Armon’s trey with 1:19 left, and before the end of the first half.

San Beda Completes Fr Martin Grand Slam

Reigning NCAA champion San Beda College drew strong games from veteran forward Jake Pascual and new recruit Julius Armon to shred Arellano University 89-66. This title romp thus made it three straight Fr Martin Cup open championships for the Red Lions.

Arellano actually stayed toe to toe with San Beda for most of the first half, with new recruits Adam Serjue and James Forrester clicking from the perimeter, and Dioncee Holts limiting Red Lion center Ola Adeogun in the paint. The Chiefs were even up 27-28 at one point early in the second period on a three-pointer from veteran guard Rocky Acidre.

San Beda however went on a late tear thoward the end of the first half. Baser Amer led the breakaway by busting out in transition. An Amer And-1 play made it 39-30, before an Armon trey made it 42-30 for the Red Lions, and the boys from Mendiola were never threatened from that point.

Pascual, Anoe Caram, Adeogun, Amer and Armon kept up the torrid pace to start the third period. Melo Lim nailed a three-pointer with a matching sky-kiss late in the third period to make it 55-33. Keith Agovida mailed back-to-back baskets to try and get the Chiefs on a run, but none of his other teammates gave him a hand.

It wuld have been all over but the shouting were it not for Vergel Zulueta once again taking cheap shots at opposing players, including a whack to the face of Adeogun on a transition opportunity. As the action was at a different angle away from the view of the transitioning referee, Zulueta got away with it. Table officials did see it though, and instructed the referees to give Zulueta a warning.

Serjue had a two-handed slam dunk to end formal hostilities as Arthur Dela Cruz hauled in the game's last loose ball.

Pascual had 20 points to lead San Beda, while Armon added 16. Serjue had 14 points for the Chiefs.

In the awarding of trophies after the game, the Red Lions all wore t-shirts that proclaimed "Hey Coach - - - Got Your Back", in a clear reference in support of their head coach Frankie Lim, who is facing sanctions along with San Sebastian volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb, in connection with a fracas that involved both coaches during an NCAA volleyball tournament game held at San Beda's St Placid Gym couple of months ago. Lim and Gorayeb are reportedly facing suspensions because of that incident.
