This conference is supposed to start this Saturday 23 July 2011 at the La Consolacion Gym in Mendiola. No official word has reached us yet though. Perhaps the Bedistas can help confirm if this is pushing through. I think Fr Martin concerns are handled via the San Beda Athletics Office anyway.

To those who will watch the game on Saturday, I strongly recommend that you confirm the schedule and venue first. Kung minsan kasi may mga last minute changes.

But a saturday schedule is better if the games will not be held in Mendiola.

Former FEU FERN star Chino Almario hit a trey and a short stab in the last minute and a half to lift Trinity to the 78-71 win over Adamson B right in the Stallion home court. Almario, who played a key role in lifting FERN to the UAAP Juniors Finals in 2008, nailed a big trey from right quarter court with Jerico Cruz in his face to make it 72-67 just as Adamson was rallying behind Cruz. "Good game pero tough game," said Trinity head coach and ex pro Junel Mendiola.

Ateneo Glory B found the range in the fourth period behind Vince Fran, Chris Newsome and Jomar Adornado to turn the tables on St Benilde B 73-70 at the San Beda gym yesterday. Falling behind as much as nine points early in the fourth period, the B Eagles clamped down on defense with Nico Elorde, Miko Sollano, Zach Aquino and Kevin Gamboa then found Fran down low, Adornado at the arc, and Newsome everywhere else in a 17-0 run that turned a 55-62 deficit into a 72-62 bubble. The B Blazers came back behind the three-point shooting of NCAA veterans Jon Argamino and Jun Garcia to come within 72-70 with still 38 seconds left. Head coach Yuri Escueta sued for time, and Newsome split two freethrows with eight second to go for the final count.

Newsome led Glory B with 22 points and six rebounds. Fran added 15 points, all in the second half, plus 10 rebounds. Elorde had 11 points and five assists including a crucial swing pass to Adornado for a breakaway trey.

Glory B will face either UP B or UE B in the Gabby Severino Quarterfinals this weekend, named in honor of the former Glory B coach who was the moving force behind the innovation started only in 2009.

Bart Bartolo led the B Blazers with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Garcia added 15 points.

UE B for its part edged San Sebastian B 62-58. Falling behind early on, the B Warriors leaned on the three-point shooting of newcomers Nike Montalvo and Jun Pedrito to suddenly pull ahead at 49-39 from a 36-39 deficit. Sam Razon was also brilliant all game long, controlling the boards and the lane.

Razon led UE B with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Montalvo added 14 points.

Former junior division star Raffy Gusi led the B Stags with 11 points while Yser Edora added 10 markers.

Gentlemen, while I do not have the win-loss records at the moment, this is the rankiing:

Numbers 1: EAC and San Beda
Numbers 2: Ateneo and UP
Numbers 3: St Benilde and UE
Numbers 4: Adamson and Lasalle

If I recall I believe EAC was unbeaten in elimination play, the only unbeaten team throughout the elims.

San Beda's Team Behold opened up a close game early in the second epriod and never looked back, as they annexed the Fr Martin Cup 2nd Division championship against Adamson B 88-60 at the Arellano gym in Manila.

First period action saw a lot of unforced errors as Ivan Ludovice and Julius Armon were overcooking outlet passes and the San Beda halfcourt wasn't spacing itself properly against the 2-3 zone of Adamson. Ingrid Sewa, the wide-bodied African import of Adamson, was unbelievably staying toe to toe with the more highly regarded Ola Adeogun in their battle in the lane. Sewa had his first shot rejected by Adeogun but he hung tough inside for a couple of lay-ins.

From a close 22-16 count at the end of the opening period, the B Lions suddenly went on a 15-2 run that made it 36-23 early in the second period. Ludovice, Kinsman Frando and Armon were suddenly off to the races, and the Adamson transition defense was caught napping for stretches too long. San Beda never looked back from there.

In the second half, the B Lions had erected as much as a 78-47 lead. Adeogun already had at least two good dunks by that time, including a two-handed showstopper when Armon bounced the ball off the back-glass on a fastbreak. Armon had also gotten a tomahawk slam of his own.

Jerico Cruz and Jon Cabigas tried to keep the B Falcons in the fight, but Sewa had gotten frustrated on offense and subsequently stopped trying on defense. Rauf Julkipli, who had led Adamosn past Ateneo's Team Glory B in their semis encounter, seemed to have run out of ammunition in this game. His reliever Don Penalosa could not get going either.

Armon led all scorers with 23 points, while Adeogun had 20 points and 15 rebounds. Cruz had 14 for Adamson with Cabigas addidng 12. Frando came off the bench to chip in 10 points for San Beda.

In the Juniors Finals between Xavier and Arellano, the player that caught my attention was the slim and not so tall point guard of Arellano. Dudes' an awesome package of smarts and hoops for a point. Simple lang yun galaw pero silky smooth. Unfortunately he sustained some sort of minor strain in the OT which made it unfavorable to Arellano. Xavier won the game only with one point margin.

For some reason or another I found Xavier's offense unconventional. Gwardya yun nasa loob, centro at forwards yun nasa labas.

^^nice observation sir mighty. but that pointguard of Arellano was able to return to the game and had a lot of chances to win it for Arellano. xavier only had one player. pointguard, forward center in one. ;D

Really? 3rd quarter na yun naabutan ko and for most posessions I thought pilit na pilit masyado yun diskarte nya. From what I saw here are the positive and negative sa laro nya:

Positive
- Wide and strong body upper body which is comparable to his kuya.
- Confident with his dribble drive. While he does not posses explosive first step for a slasher he knows how to use his wide frame in protecting the ball.

Negatives:
- Height. He should be no more than 6'0 with shoes on?
- Outside shooting. I did not catch him attempting a catch and shoot to evaluate his form but his mid-range pull-up jumper off dribble is awkward. His FT shooting is not steady too.
- Shot selection and advanced level of craftiness. His favorite move is to drive and do a back spin but its too predictable and for most part in the 2nd half I thought everytime he finish his spin he ends up shooting the ball to a ring covered by the great wall of China.

^ Boss Mighty, Jeron is nearly as tall if not as tall as his Kuya Jeric, which means he's easily 6'1" if not a legit 6'2". Shot selection is something he probably learned from his Kuya... ;D As to the form on his shot, it also looks a lot like his Kuya's, an semi-overhead snap-shot that uses plenty of arm and wrist power more than actual stroke.

His dribble drive is solid, but he'll run into a lot of hands on defense if he does not learn to protect that ball better using a closer dribble to the side of his body, and maybe a better crossover or in-out technique.

In the seniors Finals, gotta love San Beda, showing one and all that Season 88 will be even more boring than this current season with Ola Adeogun and Julius Armon in prime position to make sure all the nine other teams fight for the runner-up trophy.

Alvin Teng's not an Asst. Coach in Xavier, just a very involved parent, like most of us, hehehe :-)

I agree with your assessment that Xavier's team is too dependent on Jeron. A good defensive team will surely be able to limit him & the team if it keeps playing this way. It takes away from the team's other strengths, i.e., depth. Aside from Jeron, there are Kyles Lao and Isaac Go who are both members of the 16-Under team, and Jarrell Lim (who, in my opinion, should've been on the 16-Under team), a sophomore who hit the game winner during the championship game. There are also a slew of big men available (at least 8 players standing 6'2" or more in HS) who can contribute defensively, if not offensively. If the coach can find a way to get them to play more cohesively and off each other's strengths, this will be a very competitive team in any league.

^ Doc John, ikaw ba 'yan?

In this game against Arellano, Xavier came too close to losing against a team that isn't even considered a major NCAA high school contender. Baddel Reyes is a solid if unspectacular coach, and he can appreciate teamwork and defense, which is why I too am boggled as to why he seems to live and die with Jeron Teng. When Jet Manuel was still there, at least there was an obvious Robin to Teng's Batman. Is there anybody like that now? Kyles Lao and Jarrell Lim are solid perimeter players, but probably not at the level of Manuel when he was still with Xavier. Isaac Go looks like a legit 6'5" but seems to have underdeveloped footwork and catching abilities. He'll need plenty of one-on-one coaching to maximize his size.

The way I see it, the coach is unable to control Jeron's mom and would rather give in to her demands instead of listening to her complaints. Kyles Lao & Jarrell Lim can certainly contribute to the scoring cudgels even if they're not at par with Manuel, at least not yet. I just don't like watching a team overly dependent on one player. That's not how the game should be played. Ang sama panoorin! I really hope the coach can develop this team properly and not just rely on Jeron. We may have won this tournament playing this way, but I'm sure Hope Christian and CKSC learned a thing or two from this experience & they can still adjust in time for the Tiong Lian tournament.

By his last measurement, Isaac Go's a legit 6'6" and still growing. He still has a long way to go but given the improvement he's shown since his GS days, he'll only get better, and you can't teach height :-) He's only a sophomore, so he has a lot of time to improve. I'd pick him over Babilonia anytime.

And no, I'm not Doc John :-) Just another very involved parent :-)

What xavier need is a legitimate point guard who can run the play and distribute the ball.

What's the use of a legit point guard if the ball goes exclusively to one player? Looks like Xavier and the coaching staff can't afford to displease the patriarch and matriarch.

From my end, in that Juniors Finals game ang nakakuha ng attention ko yun point guard ng Arellano.

I think sa college, Teng can excel in the right system especially yun medyo up tempo. In half-court type, he will end up getting blocked for most of his shots kung ganun ang laro nya.

the level of playing is different from grade school to high school and much especially in college. we just have to see if teng can still play the way he plays in high school. he is very predictable. and you guys are right, bigyan mo lang ng tao na may babantay sa kanya---wala na. he is not a very "creative player". but let us see once he joins college teams (any clue what school will he enroll?).

is teng a top 3 or top 5 college recruit? who would be ahead and behind him in the rankings?

Joescoundrel

At the rate Jeron Teng is going, I'd say he is easily the top high school recruit for his class, period. He is not quite in the same league as Rey Parks, Kiefer Ravena and Kevin Ferrer of this year, but no one in his high school class is even remotely in his league.

But he'll have to compete against players who learned better fundamentals and teamwork, like Kris Porter, Tom Ramos and Kyle Suarez of the Ateneo, Van Abatayo of San Beda, and the likes of Richie Villaruz and the Bonleon boy from Lasalle Greenhills. There is also Gab Reyes of Lasalle Zobel. I'm not sure if the Nambatac kid of Letran is done with high school, or the Atangan of NU.

In any one-on-one contest Teng will eat all of these guys alive. But basketball isn't one-on-one, and as Ferrari noted already, the college game is a different kettle of fish. Kirk Long showed how even a guy as good as Parks can be shut down with good old fashioned defense. I can hardly wait to see what Tonino Gonzaga or even Alex Nuyles will do to Teng in college. Or how'bout Teng versus Parks? Or Teng versus Ravena?

Jeron was always the gigantic fish in a small pond in Tiong Lian. He'll be just another big fish in an ocean teeming with other big and even biggerr fish in UAAP college ball. He certainly won't be able to do in the UAAP what he's done in Tiong Lian. He can ask his Kuya Jeric about that.

im thinking teng would be the preseason ROY favorite. i don't like his decision to go to dlsu though he will learn more from norman black and he only has to sit behind salva for one year since salva is gone in 2013. from past history if your star in xavier you will make a dent in the uaap. to recap some former xavier stars:

yeo-uaap mythical five, pba
tang-uaap mythical five, pba
tiu-uaap mythical five, gilas
teng-ROY
Co-ROY
Manuel-most improved

there has been no highly regarded xs player who moved up to the uaap who was a flop yet... maybe eric yao from the 90's...

my only gripe with xavier now is they should have hired a better coach... i remember when xavier had alfrancis chua and jimmy mariano and lito vergara before... the school can well afford to hire a blue chip coach. i would prefer someone who is better known and with more gravitas as head coach....

^ A real bluechip coach would probably not take too kindly to parents who act as if they were on the coaching staff, which is probably why Xavier coaches of recent vintage do not stay for very long even after a championship. I think Baddel Reyes will probably last one more season at most, and then he'll be gone too. Charles Tiu is too young for this job I think, which is why thei next Xavier coach will most likely be another veteran of the coaching circuit. My money is on former JRU Bombers head coach Ariel Vanguardia.
