Great win by the Knights today, 76 - 65, over the Mapua Cardinals. Kevin Alas, Jam Cortes, Kevin Racal, VJ Espiritu and Franz Dysam keyed the Knights' breakaway in the fourth quarter, thanks to their sticky defense and the foul trouble of ace MIT center Yousif Taha.

The game was physical all throughout, with both teams dishing out almost exactly what they got in kind. It came to a head with 27 seconds left in the game and with a Letran victory all but imminent. Taha threw the ball at Kevin Alas's head and nearly ignited a free-for-all. Tsk tsk. Welcome to the NCAA, indeed.

Still and all, great start by the Knights. For the Squires fans, we had a Mark Cruz and Zyrone Cudal sighting today, with both managing to contribute well.

It seems that Louie Alas chose to play possum all throughout the pre-season, never quite playing with a full deck and experimenting with weird player combinations, resulting in rather disappointing Fil-Oil and FMC stints for the Knights. Perhaps these lackluster performances of the Knights were what the Cardinals had in mind when they strode into the court all a-swagger today. After all, they blew out the Knights in the two times they met in the off-season.

Boy, were they in for a big surprise. Will this be the start of the Knights' rejuvenation? Abangan ang susunod na kabanata...

Two things -- diligence and reasonable number of shots.

The assistants of Louie Alas have been diligent in their scouting of the NCAA pre-season favorites. In the case of MIT, Letran scouted this team in both the Fil-Oil and FMC. Pinapanood ng mga assitant ni Alas ang MIT tuwing may laban ito kontra sa malalakas na team, until it got eliminated sa Fil-Oil and in the FMC finals. They even had the FMC finals on video. On the other hand I hardly saw the MIT coaching staff scouting the way their counterpart did.

Then, an amazing thing happened in this game-- Kevin Alas took less than 20 attempts! ;D

But as the tournament progresses, the Knights will be scouted and we have to see how the team responds when opposing teams are well prepared as they did.

Kevin Alas maturing as a team player is good news. Having dished out 5 apg ay parang di kapanipaniwala!...it not only made his teamates look good but also him as well. Mukhang sineryosa ata yung biro ng tatay during one of the dugout interviews after the opening game "...buwaya kasi to" (sabay nagtawanan).

Having already beaten MIT in their first game, that leaves 2-3 more upper bracket teams as roadblocks. But w/ Sudan out on injuries, Letran has a better chance in their Aug 1 match-up w the RL.

The SSC Stags, I guess would be the harder team to beat this year. Big man Ian Sanggalang has improved by leaps and bounds playing alongside a "veteran" Calvin Abueva and R. Pascual.

Letran puts cuffs on torpid Altas
by Adrian Dy
Friday, 8 July 2011

TOURNAMENT host University of Perpetual Help System Dalta was playing its third game in seven days, and the fatigue clearly showed.

Their roster already shortened by eligibilty issues and injuries, the Altas had no legs against a Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights squad that turned the basketball game into a track meet, running their foes to the ground to the tune of 74-43 in NCAA Season 87 last July 8, 2011 at the Arena in San Juan.

The Knights, defending very aggressively, got 21 fastbreak points and 22 turnover points, pleasing head coach Louie Alas, who said after the game, “Na-sustain namin [the pressure defense] for 40 minutes.” VJ Espiritu led all scorers with a career-high 18 points in 20 minutes, while Kevin Alas added 10 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four swipes. Transferee Kevin Racal added 10 points of his own.

Two charities by Jett Vidal off a foul by Jonathan Belorio at the end of the first quarter prevented an early double-digit deficit lead, getting the Altas to within eight, 17-9. Perpetual Help didn’t score again until the 6:42 mark of the second, courtesy of a triple by Vidal, which served as his last basket of the game. The Altas continued to labor and could only tally 10 more points for the quarter. The Knights, meanwhile, rallied around Espiritu, who went off for three triples, crafting a 40-22 buffer for Letran to enjoy entering halftime.

In the third, Letran scored eight straight before Perpetual Help got on the board again, which was halfway through the period. Courtesy of a few possessions utilizing a full-court press of their own, the Altas were able to score a few points. But by then, the lead had stretched to 59-32 with a quarter left to play. After one last score by Espiritu that made it 61-34, coach Alas pulled his starters, and his reserves, led by rookie floor general Mark Cruz preserved and even extended the lead.

Vidal was the only Alta in double-digits with 10. Scottie Thompson added nine, and Chris Elopre finished with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The win was Letran’s second in as many starts after an opening day upset of the Mapúa Cardinals. “Tagal na kami hindi nanalo ng consecutive wins,” said Alas. “I told the team, if we hold them to 60 [points], we have a good chance. What more if we held them to 40?” The Letran defense was so solid that the Altas’ point total was the lowest in a single NCAA game in three years. The last time a squad notched less than 43 points was, ironically, Perpetual Help as well back in 2008 when it absorbed a 68-36 beating at the hands of the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags on August 13, 2008.

Perpetual Help slumped to 0-3. And unfortunately for the hosts, their schedule doesn’t get any easier any time soon as they’ll match up with the Stags on Monday, July 11, at 11:45 a.m.

The scores:

Letran 74 – Espiritu 18, K. Alas 10, Racal 10, Belorio 8, Cruz 7, Cortes 5, Dysam 4, Pantin 4, Mendoza 3, Lituania 3, Almazan 2, Gabriel 0, Cudal 0

Perpetual Help 43 – Vidal 10, Thompson 9, Elopre 8, Sumera 4, Jolangcob 4, Alano 3, Paulino 2, Asuncion 2, Sison 1, Arboleda 0, Tonggal 0, Parico 0

Quarter scoring: 17-9, 40-22, 59-32, 74-43

Thanks for the article, Spidermike.

Re the game, this was a good breakout effort from VJ Espiritu. I had been waiting since last year to see what this fellow's got, and finally he showed up. Here's hoping that this will give him the much-needed confidence going into the more difficult games ahead.

I like VJ Espiritu's game, too. He plays tough defense but never bordering on the dirty. He is tall and athletic but needs to develop his long range shooting to make him more effective. As of now he is still a role player in the Knights' offense but if he improves his shooting, he and Kevin Alas can be a lethal 1-2 punch (figuratively :-X) for Louie Alas.

Letran rips Arellano U
by NCAA Press Release
Date posted: Fri, Jul 15, 2011, 5:29 pm

LETRAN banked on a huge second quarter explosion to flatten Arellano University, 88-70, and gain a piece of the lead in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association at the Flying V Arena in San Juan yesterday.

After a sluggish start in the first quarter, the Knights greeted the second frame with a renewed focus on defense, while uncorking a 21-0 blast midway in the quarter to post a 14-points spread, 39-25, to finally wrest control of the match.

The Chiefs actually started out well and even held an early nine-point lead, 23-14, with 1:12 left in the first and went to the second stanza with a 23-18 edge.

They scored the first basket of the second for a 25-18 count at the 9:40 mark before the Intramuros-based dribblers turned deadly-hot from all corners.

The Knights took the half, 42-31, carrying an 11-point bulge.

Jonathan Belorio, who had nine points in the big run, started Letran's explosion with a jumper at the 8:32 mark, and Jam Cortes capped the run with a three-point play with 2:23 left before the half.

From there, it was all Letran as it continued its assault in the second half and kept its double-digit lead up until the final buzzer.

The Knights posted their biggest lead at 21 points, 82-61, on a drive from Kevin Alas in the final 2:41.

The win was Letran's third in a row, and it shoved the Knights into a two-way tie for the lead with the San Sebastian Stags.

The Chiefs fell to 1-2.

Cortes led a balanced attack for Letran with a near double-double of 16 points and nine rebounds while Belorio came off the bench and added 15.

‘’We tightened our defense in the second period kasi nakakatakbo sila eh. Na-stop namin yung fastbreaks and sumunod yung offense namin,’’ said Letran coach Louie Alas.

‘’Maganda yung start namin ngayon. Tatlong panalo na. Sana lang masustain namin kapag nakalaban na namin yung iba pang malakas.’’

Kevin Racal added 14, Raymund Almazan had 12 while Alas chipped in 10, all in the second half.

Andrian Celada finished with a game-high 22 points, Rocky Acidre had 17 while Vergel Zulueta had 16 for Arellano but the rest of the Chiefs failed to contribute significant numbers.

That's 5 guys in double figures. That's the main difference of this Knights line-up from recent years-- offense is spread and K.Alas is taking less attempts which results to his teammates having more things to do in offense than just wait and watch him take his shots.

Now, what we should look forward to is how the new contributors in offense perform when up against the pre-season favorites. If they do as well in a more intense and pressured enviroment then Letran should be acknowledge as a contender. Double digits not necessary, basta nandun at real option sila sa offense, then Letran will again bring excitement to the competition.

NCAA: STAGS LEAN ON 'BIG 3' TO SUBDUE KNIGHTS

MANILA, Philippines – Expecting a highly-physical affair, who else would San Sebastian coach Topex Robinson turn to than his big three.

Ian Sangalang, Calvin Abueva and Ronald Pascual muscled their way anew to lift the Stags over the feisty Letran Knights, 71-62, in the NCAA Season 87 Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.
Sangalang collected 22 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks to help San Sebastian stave off a blistering run by Letran for a 4-0 start.

“We expected this game to be physical,” said Robinson. “Letran’s really a tough team.”
The Stags led by 13 with 2:54 left in the third period before the Knights surged to a 16-6 blitz capped by a floater by Kevin Alas that chopped down the deficit to three, 51-48.

“I told them [my players] to be composed and determined,” said Robinson.
“We know Letran’s not going to give it [the win] to us,” added Robinson.

And his players would respond. Abueva answered back with a three-point play before a Pascual side step extended San Sebastian’s advantage back to eight, 56-48. Adding more woes to Letran, Alas fouled out with still 7:05 left leaving the Knights with limited offensive options as the game went to its final stretch. Second-stringer Lyle Antipuesto would put the game out reach with a dagger triple at the 1:43 mark to give the Stags a comfortable 69-57 spread.

Abueva notched his 27th double-double with 18 points and 10 boards while the flashy Pascual chipped in with 13 points. “Calvin is going to be Calvin, at the end of the day he’s still our leader,” commended Robinson.
Sangalan, Abueva and Pascual scored all but one of San Sebastian’s 25 first quarter points.

The Knights, who absorbed their first defeat in four games, were held to just 10 points in the first period.
Alas paced Letran with 14 points while lanky big man Raymond Almazan had 11 points, 17 rebounds and five swats.

Boxscores from www.inboundpass.com:

San Sebastian 71 – Sangalang 22, Abueva 18, Pascual 13, Antipuesto 6, J. dela Cruz 4, Miranda 4, Ferrer 2, del Rio 1, Maiquez 1, Balucanag 0
Letran 62 – K. Alas 14, Almazan 11, Cortes 10, Cruz 7, Gabriel 7, Dysam 5, Racal 4, Belorio 3, Pantin 1, Espiritu 0, J. Alas 0, Mendoza 0

Poor FG% did us in in this game. We had 23 conversions out of 91 attempts (25%). Most telling was VJ Espiritu's 0 of 14, with 9 of those attempts coming from the 3-point area. This guy really has to find a way to get rid of his jitters. Most of his clunkers were open attempts.

Kevin Racal was a nonentity in this game, hoisting 7 attempts and netting only 1.

Mark Cruz, on the other hand, did a yeoman's job as back-up point guard, even scoring 7 points -- including a 4-point play -- in the process. Almazan also performed very well, backing up his 11 points with 17 rebounds and 5 blocks. Kevin Alas topscored with 14, and would have done more but fouled out early. Jam Cortes had an awful 3-of-14 FG performance, but still managed to score 10 points, partly off freethrows.

Thanks to Almazan, we outrebounded the Stags, 60 - 48, 33 offensive. However, we gave up too many freethrow attempts -- 40, of which the Stags converted 26 -- while having only a 12-of-22 FT conversion rate of our own.

The Knights had 14 turnovers compared to the Stags' 20, but were only able to score 10 points off those turnovers.

Bawi na lang next time, Knights.

Nakabawi ang Letran kanina kontra sa Blazers, 112 - 91. The game was tight until the end of the third quarter, but come the fourth, the Knights turned up the defense and came away with a massive blitz to put away the Blazers for good.

Kevin Alas topscored for Letran in this game, with 19 points. Foul shots were still spotty for him though, as I believe he missed more than he made. He did have 6 assists, which should put him still at the top of the NCAA assists category. Cortes, Belorio and Almazan also contributed in terms of points, rebounds and blocks. Almazan had a spectacular block of a Carlo Lastimosa shot, wickedly bouncing the ball off the board which led to a Letran recovery.

Mark Cruz had two treys and a flurry of steals, while Franz Dysam reined in the "gigil" a bit and made significant contributions in steals and assists. VJ Espiritu woke up from his slumber and rifled in a couple of treys, and even rookies Jamil Gabawan, Andrei Mendoza and Kevin Racal had their moments. Actually, I like Gabawan's moves. I have high hopes for him becoming a more vital part of the Knights' rotation in the future.

Great inside defense and rebounding by the Red Lions doomed the Knights to their second loss, 77-62. There were almost no easy baskets for Letran bigs Jam Cortes, Jonathan Belorio and Raymund Almazan as the Lions' big men put up a suffocating defense inside the paint and swatted away shots and passes, oftentimes leading to turnovers. This forced Letran to look for scoring from the outside, but unfortunately, VJ Espiritu appeared to be having an offday. There were some jumpers from Alas and Cruz, but these were few and far between.

Not much teamwork today was seen today, as set plays were broken up and the boys had to rely on one-on-one forays for the most part. Our defense was also spotty. There were many missed assignments resulting in many pointblank and open shots for the likes of Lanete, Kyle Pascual, Marcelo and Villahermosa. Even Caram was left open several times and did we pay dearly for this oversight.

In another thread, I commented that the matchups of Caram vs. Alas, Villahermosa vs. Racal, Lanete vs. Espiritu, J. Pascual vs. Cortes and K. Pascual vs. Almazan would favor Letran. Although the starting lineups proved to be on the dot, my assessment was sadly mistaken. Our starting lineup got blown away by ten points right away, and the second team did worse.

Anyway, for whatever it's worth, I'm sure the boys -- and the coaching staff -- would have learned something from this debacle. Kudos to Almazan, Cruz, Alas, Cortes and Belorio. At least, you guys never gave up. Ganyan talaga. Minsan, inaalat talaga. Bawi na lang sa susunod. Arriba!

Knights over Pirates, 92 - 89, in OT. This was the first close game we've won in about two years and if only for that, I'm happy with this win. :) What's negative, however, was that we lost a rather substantial lead and had to scramble in the end to pull this one out. Still, a win is a win and I'm not complaining.

^Had we lost this one, it would have dampened the team's confidence going into the last 2 games of the 1st round and allowed the Pirates to gain better positioning... mabuti na lang di bumitaw ???

A loss could spell the difference in our f4 chances anew, where the 2 top spots already assured for SSC-SBC.

The 3, 4 and 5th spots would most likely be a 3-cornered fight amongst the schools inside the Walls ... CSJL, MIT and LUP, thus giving apt to the title "'Battle of INTRAMUROS"

Too early to draw the final standings but its hard to imagine Letran going past the RL/Stags ...the most the Knights can accomplish is the 3rd spot after the elimination. Ang gusto nga ni Alas is primarily to get our team back to the F4 and from there on, who knows what might happen. Mahirap kasi malagay sa #4, nasa balad na naman tayo ng alanganin niyan just like last year, at pag nagkagipitan may halo pang pressure at kaba...tapos pag nagta-talo, mabubuhay na naman ang clamor for a "change" ;D

Right you are, bro. Escalera Jr. Re this game, it shouldn't even have been that close. Our boys were given 53 free throw attempts, but we managed to convert only 25 of them, or 47%. In contrast, Lyceum had 29 attempts and converted 21, or 72%.

This is definitely something we should improve on. Even those who used to be very good in free throw conversions -- Cruz, Almazan, Belorio -- are now performing terribly in this category. Ironically, this was one game where our boys were out-fouled by the opponents, but we were not able to take advantage. Was this a consenquence of fatigue, perhaps? Coach Louie mainly used 8 players, averaging around 26 minutes each. The most used among those was Kevin Alas, who played 40 minutes. Mabuti na lang may natirang hininga pa ito noong bandang huli at hindi tayo kinapos. I watched too many offseason games where Letran used such a short rotation and we ended up with the shorter end of the stick. It's good that this time, we were able to pull this off.

Cortes-led Knights Stun EAC

The Letran Knights looked firm in sealing the 3rd spot in the standings after staggering the EAC Generals, 76-67 for their sixth win against two setbacks in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

Jam Cortes, a fourth year forward and this year’s Team Captain finally dominated and delivered the goods for the Knights with 18 points and twenty rebounds.

Cortes started the fourth period on fire as he scored five straight points, including the bucket that gave the Knights their biggest lead of the game at 14, 66-52 with 7:15 remaining.

“I want to give it to our big men. It’s about time they dominate. But, we still have to work on our consistency and mental toughness.” Said Coach Louie Alas.

The EAC General, who dropped to 3-5, momentarily took over the lead in the second quarter, 30-28 over four straight points from rookie Igee King.

EAC’s rookie Jolas Paguia turned the fourth into a one-man show as he single-handedly trimmed down their deficit down to just four, 66-62 over a 10-2 EAC run.

Cortes down the stretch provided crucial baskets to bail the Knights out of the woods.

Letran’s Almazan and Cortes, who combined for 34 rebounds, were just 1 rebound shy of tying EAC’s total rebound output of 35. Almazan also finished with a career-high 6 blocks.

Rookies Joshua Torralba and Jolas Paguia led the scoring for the Generals with 18 and 16 respectively.

Earlier, in the Juniors matches, Ivan Villanueva provided the firepower for the Letran Squires as it downed the EAC Brigadiers, 77-54. The Squires are now at 6-2 while the EAC Brigadiers dropped to 5-3.

The Arellano Braves pulled a huge upset on the CSB Greenies in a thrilling 64-61 win with Richard Lontoc leading the Legarda-based squad with 15 markers. The Braves clinched their third win for a 3-5 card while the Greenies absorbed their second loss for a 6-2 card.

These Bombers have come to life of late and so may be primed to make a statement that they are ready to turn their season around. On the other hand, the Knights should not take this game lightly, as we need every win to create more separation from the teams vying for fourth place, and so we can continue to contend for one of the two twice-to-beat advantages.

Knights, Squires chalk up double victory in the last day of the first round

Letran College bucked a slow start but used its mastery of the boards to outmuscle Jose Rizal University en route to a 70-59 win yesterday in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

With big men Jam Cortes and Raymond Almazan manning the boards and patrolling the paint, the Knights had little problem getting out of an early 20-20 standoff to a 39-30 spread at the half.

Almazan, who had eight points, was a monster off the boards for Letran, hauling 11 of his game-high 17 boards in the first half, even as Mark Cruz repeatedly scored from the perimeter and scored seven points in the second quarter to keep the Heavy Bombers at bay.

The Knights thus ended their first-round campaign with a 7-2 card and are assured of the solo third spot after today's match between San Beda and San Sebastian, which are disputing the top spot as of press time.

JRU slid to 3-6 in a three-way tie with Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua.

Kevin Alas, who had 18, had 12 in the second half and joined forces with Cortes to give Letran a sizeable 55-39 spread. Cortes finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

“It was Raymund Almazan’s game kanina. It was his rebounding. Because of the rebounding, we had a good chance,” said Letran coach Louie Alas

In all, Letran pulled down 59 rebounds to JRU’s 35.

In the junior division, the San Beda Red Cubs completed a nine-game sweep of the first round with a 97-69 rout of the San Sebastian Staglets.

Van Abatayo led the Red Cubs with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Francis Abarcar had 17 points and nine boards. Arvin Tolentino chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.

In the other juniors game, the Letran Squires (7-2) ripped JRU Light Bombes, 89-76, with McJour Luib scoring 25 points.

The Knights beat the Arellano Chiefs, 73 - 59, to improve their record to 8 - 2. The Knights led by double digits from the second period onwards by controlling the boards, breaking up the Chiefs' forays into the paint, and initiating turnovers. Jam Cortes and Kevin Alas had stellar ball games, with Kevin tearing up Arellano's box-and-1 to shreds with crossover moves and leak-outs that left his defenders gasping. Good passing plays into the paint were also initiated by Mark Cruz, starring recipients like Kevin Racal, Jam Cortes and Jonathan Belorio.

Raymond Almazan didn't have a good shooting day today -- finishing the game with only four points -- as he was hounded by foul trouble throughout. Nonetheless, he did have highlight blocks and altered many Arellano shots, thereby preventing the Chiefs from coming closer. Speaking of blocks, Kevin Racal had a spectacular block of his own, erasing Palma's weak lay-up and sending it to kingdom come. In the next Letran offensive play, Racal scored on a lay-in with an and-1 to boot.

On the whole, a great game by the Knights. Arriba!

^Considering how far Jam Cortes went in his collegiate career in Letran, Almazan may have a more productive career, if mentored properly. He has the height and the wingspan to be a formidable frontline force. He'll have to overachieve in the Knights' scheme of things, though. But that would only be good for him.

^thanks bugleboy.

I think Jam's playing year with Lyceum will be counted because NAASCU (am I right?) is not a developmental league. So that mean's this is Jam's final year.

I am quite excited about Almazan because we have another big man who is RP team potential. A 6'7 mobile center is still a rare find nowadays.

^Agree with you on that one, riou.

Re the game yesterday:

The Knights scored 29 points in the final quarter to break away from the pesky JRU Heavy Bombers, 75 - 56, in yesterday's tiff. However, though the Knights won this one in runaway fashion, I think this was more a product of JRU's ineptitude and relative lack of fighting spirit than our awesome offensive sock.

To be sure, the Knights' defense rocked. JRU's scorers -- except for Matute -- could not get going because Almazan and Cortes were always there for the swat or at least, the threatened swat. The blocks and defensive rebounds fueled the Knights' offense, as we score 19 points off fastbreaks alone. Memo to Almazan: Enough of the showboating dunk attempts. It just gives the opponents' gallery a chance to heckle you. Just do your job -- blocking, rebounding -- and your offense will come to you. Don't worry about that, and don't let this MVP business get to your head.

The Knights' 3-point shooting was awful at 3 of 13 (23%), as only Mark Cruz and Espiritu were able to connect. Our two-point shooting was fairly decent at 40% though, perhaps due to those made fastbreak attempts. With regard to our FT shooting, this was really the pits. I mean, 55%? Memo to Kevin Alas: Concentrate, boy. You can do better than 3-of-8 in FTs. I've seen you effortlessly making your free throws when you were a Squire. I don't understand what your problem is, now. All other departments of your game, though, have already improved, especially the assists. It's just this one that needs some work.

Anyway, congratulations to the Knights. It's still a win, but I think Coach Louie will still have a lot to say to the boys about improvements that still have to be done if we are to contend for this year's crown.

The box scores (from www.ncaa.org.ph):

Letran (75) -- K. Alas 17, Cortes 11, Racal 10, Cruz 10, Dysam 8,, Almazan 7, Belorio 3, Espiritu 3, Pantin 2, Lituania 2, J. Alas 2, Cudal 0, Gabawan 0, Gabriel 0, Mendoza 0.

Mabuti na lang dinaga ang Mapua. Knights win, 69 -67, in overtime. A miscue by Taha in regulation, a no-show by Mangahas and Nimes in OT plus free-throw misses by Ighalo and Taha gave Letran this important win.

Great game by Almazan today. I counted at least 4 blocks from him, and a dozen altered Cardinals' shots because of his menacing presence in the paint. Great three-point shots also from Kevin Alas and VJ Espiritu to keep the Knights' heads above the water, especially in the closing minutes. Props too to Franz Dysam. He played an inspired game, coming up with a crucial trey and a nifty pass in transition to Jam Cortes to key a five-point turnaround. Belorio was his old "gigil" self, while Cruz, Racal and Pantin concentrated more on setting up their team mates than scoring. Still and all, a good team effort, especially in defense.

Whew. If I never watch a game like this again, it would be too soon. ;D

Alas, Knights, Hammer Lyceum
by Adrian Dy

AS Kevin Alas goes, so too do the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, and Kevin Alas is clearly going places.
The mercurial scoring machine notched a career-high 29 points, towing his team to an 88-74 win against the Lyceum of the Philippines University and at least a playoff for a postseason spot in the 87th season of the NCAA last September 9 at the Arena in San Juan.
After needing overtime to dispatch the Pirates the first time around, Letran was careful not to overestimate (sic) their opponents in this encounter. That said, they still lost a 27-21 lead in the second quarter as Lyceum turned to former San Beda Red Cub Gian Mallari. The deadeye knocked in three of four triples in the span of a minute and a half, turning the lead over to the Pirates, 30-27. Five straight points by Franz Dysam gave it back to Letran in the last minute of the game, and coupled with a score off an inbounds pass by Jam Cortes, allowed the Knights to surge ahead by four at the half.
In the third period, a triple by VJ Espiritu, followed by a slick behind-the-back pass by Alas to Dysam, gave the Knights their first double-digit lead, 50-40, forcing the Pirates to call for time at the 5:54 mark. Lyceum came out of the ceasefire and found Mallari for another triple, only to be met with an Alas layup. But a renewed surge from the Pirates cut the lead to just two, as Chris Cayabyab dropped five points in a 7-0 run. That was the closest they got though, as Letran went on a run of its own, with 10 unanswered to go up, 62-50, with 1:20 left in the third.
Lyceum hoped that opening the final period with a Cayabyab jumper would get the ball rolling, but that turned out to be its last score for more than three minutes as the Knights rattled off 10 straight again until Floricel Guevarra finally broke the silence at the 6:24 mark, 74-58. But the battle to gain back the lead became more difficult when Cayabyab was whistled for his fifth while trying to post up with 5:08 on the clock. Undaunted, charities by Shane Ko and a layup by Guevarra got the Pirates to within nine, 80-71, with 1:56 left for a grand comeback, before six straight from Letran dashed their hopes, as an Alas transition score served as the nail in the coffin.
“We were having a hard time matching up,” admitted Letran head coach Louie Alas after the game. “Sinubukan ko mag-zone pero tumira ata ng three consecutive three points [Lyceum]. Ang lamang namin, kinain. So nag-stick na lang ako with match-up [man to man].”
Kevin Alas’ 29 points came on 8-of-18 shooting, plus a 12-of-16 stint at the free throw line, as the Pirates had no one capable of staying in front of the speedy combo guard. He also came one assist shy of matching his personal best in that category after dealing 12 dimes against this same team in the first round. Co-starters Dysam and Cortes scored 11 each, while Raymund Almazan had 14 caroms and two swats.
With the Lyceum backcourt of Cayabyab and Ko held in check by their Letran counterparts, the Pirates needed to turn to other players for points. Vence Laude led three others in double-digit scoring, finishing with 14 markers, four boards and three assists. Mallari added 13, while Guevarra and Mark Francisco teamed up for 22 points and 13 rebounds. Remarkably, all four of them came off the bench for Lyceum, as their starters struggled in this game.
Despite fielding a shorter lineup than Letran, the bigs of Lyceum kept the rebounding battle tight, with both sides hauling down 48 misses, and the Pirates even having the edge on the offensive glass, 26 to 22, resulting in a 19 to 9 advantage in second-chance points. Lyceum was also able to do their work on the boards minus center Allan Santos, who was suspended indefinitely by the team, according to Lyceum’s Management Committee representative.
Now boasting of an 11-2 record, the Knights assured themselves of, at the very least, a playoff for the fourth playoff spot. But St. Benilde’s loss in the second game to San Sebastian gave Letran a free pass to the postseason after a one-year hiatus in 2010. Prior to last season, Alas and the Knights had been to the Final Four seven straight years, only to see that streak end in Season 86. “Di na tayo puwedeng hindi pumunta sa Final Four,” he told his team two weeks after the end of last year’s regular season, and his Knights delivered on that promise.
Letran will get a long break before coming back on September 21 to play the EAC Generals. Once in possession of the fourth spot themselves, the Pirates now find themselves in the midst of three-game skid with a 5-8 record. They’ll look to make up some ground when they play the Arellano Chiefs on September 16, though their chances of making the postseason are beginning to look extremely dim.
The scores:
Letran 88 – K. Alas 29, Dysam 11, Cortes 11, Cruz 8, J. Alas 8, Almazan 6, Belorio 5, Racal 4, Espiritu 3, Pantin 2, Lituania 1, Mendoza 0
Lyceum 74 – Laude 14, Mallari 13, Guevarra 12, Francisco 10, Cayabyab 9, Ko 7, Napiza 6, Lacap 3, Azores 0, Lesmoras 0
Quarter scoring: 19-17, 41-37, 64-54, 88-74

The EAC Generals came into the match almost literally with brass knuckles and chains, ready to engage the Knights in a rumble a la West Side Story. The ploy succeeded for two quarters before the Knights, starring Kevin Alas, Raymund Almazan, Kevin Racal, Junjun Alas, Jonathan Belorio and Franz Dysam methodically put the defensive cuffs on them to win pulling away, 80 - 58.

EAC's rough play earned for the Knights a total of 45 trips to the stripe, where we sank only 22 (or around 49%). In other words, if we had converted around 60% of our tries, this game should have been a bigger blowout than it already was. Conversely, the Knights allowed EAC only three tripes to the stripe.

Pambihira talaga itong EAC. Mag-aangas na lang, sa Letran pa. Tsk tsk.

Anyway, the box scores (from www.inboundpass.com):

The scores:
Letran 80 – K. Alas 20, J. Alas 12, Almazan 11, Dysam 11, Belorio 7, Racal 7, Espiritu 5, Cruz 2, Mendoza 2, Lituania 2, Gabawan 1, Gabriel 0, Cudal 0
EAC 58 – Morada 15, Paguia 10, Jamon 10, Cubo 9, Vargas 4, King 3, Villegas 3, Torralba 2, Diolanto 2, Sanchez 0, Chiong 0, Yaya 0, Juliano 0
Quarter scoring: 14-17, 35-35, 59-46, 80-58

^Simple lang naman ang kuwento e. Perpetual wanted to win. We sure as heck didn't, or at least it looked that way.

To be fair about it, Perpetual appeared to have prepared well for this game. Their transition defense was spot-on, so we weren't able to run our usual fastbreaks. Lots of hands bothered Cortes and Almazan when they went inside the paint. There was never a free shot inside, except for one or two by Dysam. Our boys kept on looking for fouls, which unfortunately weren't awarded most of the time. During the times when free throws were awarded to us, we rewarded Perps by muffing at least 50% of these.

Plus, the Perps shooters were having a field day. Ang daming tres na pinaulan nina Vidal, Thompson, at pati si Elopre. Ginawa tayong asintahan.

One of the elder alumni seated next to me said, "Mahirap yatang talunin ang Perpetual ngayon ha. Mukhang nag-eenjoy sila e." And indeed they were. The Knights, on the other hand, looked like they were suffering from two weeks of constipation. No communication, almost no assists -- just botched plays, point-blank misses, me-against-the-world drives and errors one after the other.

Case in point: during one of our rare steals, Kevin Alas, Cortes and Almazan appeared to have been jostling for possession when the ball hit Kevin on the thigh and went out of the court. WTF! Sila-sila na lang, nag-agawan pa. Another case in point: Mark Cruz, on a three-on-two fastbreak, chose to give a high pass for an alley-oop to Almazan when the guy was covered by the Alta center and Almazan was expecting a pass down low. Result: botched play, and the Altas scored on the other end. Asar!

So, Escalera Jr. and the rest of you sports fans, if we had won this ball game, it would have been one heck of a miracle. Like I said, we played like we didn't want to win (except for VJ Espiritu and to a certain extent, Cortes), while Perpetual played the game of their lives back there.

Let's just hope that we have reached out annual quota of WTF losses and continue back on the winning track, starting with the game against Baste on Friday. Meanwhile, we should be expecting heart-felt thanks from the Red Lions. We just about handed second-place to them.

Gayunpaman, arriba pa rin!

I hear you, Escalera Jr. What worries me is not that the Knights lost, but the manner by which they lost. I just took a look at the stats, and although our team outrebounded the Altas 55 to 31, we scored only 4 points from fastbreaks. Ilang beses din kasi tayong naagawan ng Perps pag baba natin ng bola. Our boys had 23 turnovers, vs. 8 for Perps. Our FG% were dead-even with those of Perps, at 33% apiece. It's just that they took and made more shots, on an absolute value basis.

We also gave up too many foul shots to Perps (26 tries, on which they scored a whopping 21 points, or 81%) vs. our awful 46% performance (11 of 24).

I cannot chalk up the poor FT performance to over-confidence, as this has been a recurring problem of the team. Mabuti pa si Belorio, at least na-improve na niya ang facet na ito. Pero si Jam Cortes at si Kevin Alas... hayzzz! :(

Still, I'm hoping that this performance was a temporary aberration. I'm also hoping that they concentrate more on their freethrow conversions. Kaya iyan. Arriba!

Hindi ko din maintindihan mga players natin, nagiging sakit na ng knights yan pag alam na mahina ang team hindi nagiging aggressive, well aggresive nga pero FG scoring napakababa. Sana lang hindi to mangyari sa friday kundi bsate will use this weaknesses to win.

Our 2 previous loss' were against the top 2 caliber teams kung kaya't madaling tanggapin...however the last one was against a cellar-dweller team w/c makes it hard to fathom.

Read also para daw nanalo ng championship sa dugout ng Perps after the game. What i find amusing is i didnt read much negative feedbacks from our camp here even sa pex.

Madaling kallimutan ito if we pull our own version of upset on either the Stags or RL.

Problema lang kung ma-upset naman tayo ng Blazers ;D

"Knights out to put a blemish on the undefeated Stags"

oca
09-30-2011, 01:59 PM
Sa isang punto lang lamang ang Letran kontra Baste-- defensive rotation.

Alas has enough men and enough fouls to spare to put defensive pressure on the Stags for full 40 minutes. The Letran coaching staff is probably the most diligent among NCAA teams in scouting opponents. Even the most familiar opposition is scouted, baka nga naman may bagong plays at ayaw nilang magugulat sila pag nakatapat.

Pero malaking question dito ay yung options ng Knights sa opensa. Letran's D is very mush a constant factor, pero yung contribution sa offense other than Alas and Cortes ay nawala sa 1st rd games vs SBc and SSC-R. A case of nerves on those players?

Patapos na eliminations, dapat tapos na ang usaping yan, but the Letran rotation still has to prove it can play both ends of the court during the big games.

Kaya ba natalo sa Perpetual dahil ang isip nila ay nasa laro kontra Baste?

ESCALERA JR.
09-30-2011, 02:54 PM
Defense - 'Physical play' has always been the trademark of Letran. But it doesnt always win games. Meron dapat kakambal na buslo ng bula para balanse.

Aside from the point production of KevinA and the ave. scoring Cortes, 1 or 2 more Knights should do their share in the scoring dept. Mag-click na sana mga tres ni Espiritu o di kaya idakdak ng idakdak na ni Almazan at Beorio ang bula ng sa gayon marindi si Sangalang at baka ma foul trobol. Another scoring option is Racal...hindi pa lang siguro nakakuha ng kumpiyansa pero this guy can definitely score if given the green light.

I expect a closer finish than the previous sleeper more than a month ago. Ika nga baka kinakabog lang nun, pero nag-init na at pwede nang p"pumusta" ng doblado ;D

For me, Baste peaked early and they might be on a decline now. After getting that win against the RLs, their performance somehow went down by a notch or two nearly losing a couple of games against weak teams.

The RLs might be peaking at the right time, although injuries may haunt the team in the finals.

Grabe. Salamat sa mga nagbantay ng bahay namin habang kami'y wala. Lalong lalo na kay oca. At least, nasulit ang inyong pagsusubaybay, lalo na't natuldukan na ang animo'y walang humpay na tagumpay ng Baste.

That was one heck of a great game earlier. Akala ko aatakihin na yung mga katabi kong senior alumni, lalo na nang lumamang ang Baste sa OT. To be sure, that trey by Kevin towards the end was a prayer of a shot. Oca was right; all game long, Kevin had been missing from the perimeter. Si Dysam actually ang mainit sa labas e. So when Kevin let go of that last attempt, I thought that we were goners. Imagine my surprise when the shot when in!

Great game by all the boys, especially on defense. We had the so-called Big Three's number almost all throughout this match. Noong huli lang naka-kamada si Pascual. Props to Cortes, Almazan, Belorio, Dysam, Junjun, Mark Cruz, VJ, Racal, and the surprise package, Gabriel. Sana ganyan lagi para hindi tayo nasisilat.

Speaking of silat, I suggest we don't look too far ahead. Game sa Monday vs. CSB. Let's get this win!

Read online news earlier, ang daming na-highlight sa mga reports, but hardly any was attributed to the diligence of the Knights coaching staff in scouting the opposition.

The Stags committed 23 turnovers in this game which resulted to 22 pts for Letran. A significant number of those 23 turnovers were forced turnovers.

Alam ng Letran ang galaw ng bola ng Baste, makikita mo sa dami ng deflections, yung pagdating ng help-D from the weak side also forced turnovers. Then, ang daming errors ng Baste sa transition. Yung breakaway ni Abueva from a defensive rebound was hardly seen in this game. Long forward passes were covered well.

Knowing what and where to cover/defend does not happen by chance. Kung di mo alam galaw ng kalaban, paiikutan ka lang nyan.

Paano mo ba malalaman galaw ng kalaban?

Great win by the team! From the coach to the rah rah boys.

I'm officially taking Kevin's name from the all-tunnel vision team. He was like a boxer probing the defense and measuring the distance. He really put the defense on its heels driving to the lane like it was his drive way. A couple of plays before the huge 3-pointer, he attempted at teh same spot as if he just measured the distance. I just knew he was going to launch that shot.

There are so many deserving honorable mentions not least of which is Almazan's defense. He looked like Arwind lite going after the block. Jam Cortez battled his more heralded counterparts, punctuating it with the athletic drop pass the resulted to a basket. Dysam and Espiritu played good defense agains Pascual, who only got going in the end game, which was expected of him. Racal was gritty. Cruz hit crucial shots and quarterbacked the team while Alas was on the bench.

Incredibly, Junjun also contributed, not by maiming by the opponent, but by putting points on the scoreboard. Did anybody expect that reverse shot? Parang sadya :D

10-01-2011, 08:56 AM
Letran needed only 2 points just to tie the game with 20 less seconds. But Kevin Alas went for glory and buried the 3 point shot. Imagine the criticisms Kevin would get if he failed to convert that triple. ;D

No, bugleboy, I didn't attend Letran. The Casuga's were close friends of the family. Mrs.Casuga referred us to a hematologist when a family member needed to be examined by a specialist. During those times, matagal na yun, ilan lang ang hematologist sa bansa, that doctor was Dr.Caviles. Three decades or more din yata. I know their loyalty and dedication to the institution. Kaya baka magmulto pag marinig nilang pulahan ako, eh nagmi-miron lang naman talaga ako. ;D

Going back to the game, no one has mentioned, maganda mindset ng mga players sa larong ito. Focused sa laro. Validated by the fact that walang flagrant o unsportmanlike fouls. Ganon din ang Baste, but maraming instances Abueva was baiting the Knights into an "exchange", pero walang kumagat.

Electrifying ang cheering section ng letran talagang our cheering squad nasa baba at pinapacheer ng todo ang mga students at alumni so kudos to them!

Paglabas namin nakakatuwang tignan nagyayakapan at nagkakamayan mga letranista at bedista dahil todo pasasalamat sila samin hehehe.

@riou -- I agree. The cheering was great last Friday, notwithstanding the fact that we were outnumbered 3:1 by the Baste crowd. It may have been more, since interspersed among us were the Bedan kibitzers who were wishing for a Letran win. Well, they got their wish. Now, let's see if we get ours this coming Friday. ;D Just saw the stats, BTW. What's surprising about this game was that Abueva made only 1 out of 8 FG attempts. The bulk of his points came from the freethrow line, where he made 14 out of 15 attempts. The whole Baste team had a 30-of-36 (or 86%) clip from the line, while we were only able to make 14 of 23 (or 61%). That's the game in a nutshell back there. This shouldn't even have been that close.

@oca -- It's good to know that you were able to see this side of Mrs. Casuga, and that she was able to help your family. As for us, we knew the couple only as very strict but very effective teachers. SLN!

Re the game earlier today, we won, 72 - 60, over the Blazers. It was a game of ups and downs as Benilde played catch-up from the second quarter up to around half of the last quarter. They were even able to wrest the lead sometime in the third quarter, thanks to bonehead plays, sloppy passing, and erratic free throw shooting by the Knights. We were just able to steady ourselves in time via the efforts of Kevin Alas, Mark Cruz and Jam Cortes in the fourth quarter. Ang galing ni Mark Cruz sa larong ito, mayroon pang nalalamang up-and-under move that stunned even Benilde's Jan Tan. VJ Espiritu and Franz Dysam were also great in this game. Ditto with Kevin Racal and Belorio. Inconsistent pa rin, pero mabuti na lang mas inconsistent ang Benilde. But, as Coach Louie noted, we obviously cannot play this well against San Beda and hope to win.

Still and all, tingin ko may laban tayo. Tignan na lang natin sa Biyernes.

The scores: (from www.inboundpass.com):

Letran 72 – K. Alas 16, Cortes 12, Cruz 11, Espiritu 10, Belorio 7, Dysam 6, Racal 4, J. Alas 4, Almazan 2, Lituania 0, Mendoza 0, Gabriel 0
CSB 60 – Taha 18, Lastimosa 11, Grey 10, Sinco 9, Tan 4, Carlos 4, Altamirano 2, McCoy 1, Deles 1, de la Paz 0, Pate 0
Quarter scoring: 16-5, 28-19, 47-45, 72-60

Tomorrow's game maybe one of the most crucial we'll play in the last 4 yrs to get back at the FINALS once again.

A win will guarantee us a playoff for #2 and put the RL hanging in the balance as they still play the Stags next week. That is a lot of pressure indeed.

However, if we fail to grab this opportunity, meron pa naman pagasa...yung nga lang the pressure would be on us and that is not good. Kakabogin na naman ang mga bata at mga alumni niyan. ;D

So to avoid all this unnecessary pressure, lets take this game tom. and WIN IT.

The Knights got hammered today by the well-oiled San Beda Red Lions, 84-68, to end the elimination phase of our NCAA campaign at 14-4.

It was nip and tuck for the majority of the first quarter, but the Red Lions began pulling away towards the end of that quarter, thanks to their air-tight defense, quick ball recoveries and accurate sniping from Garvo Lanete, Anthony Semerad, and Baser Amer.

We were never able to recover after that, as the Lions were able to protect double-digit leads even after spirited rallies by the Knights. It seemed to me though, from my lofty perch up in the nosebleed section, that our guys played it soft. In contrast, the Lions played like they really wanted to win, and this attitude drew dividends in terms of offensive rebounds, loose ball recoveries, and help defense. The Lions' effort also showed in the fouls that they were assessed. I think they came into the game primed for a mano-a-mano battle, but the Knights didn't seem to have it in them to respond in kind. I think we were out-fouled by the Lions in this game, which was strange, considering that we should have been the more aggressive challengers.

There were some good signs, though. Cortes performed better in this ball game, compared to the first one. Here, at least he held his own against the SBC bigs. Almazan also contributed, but was saddled by fouls; he was taken out by Coach Louie in the early part of the fourth quarter and never returned. He had a great looking slam, though. Great shooting from the outside by Dysam, Belorio and Mark Cruz, with Cruz scoring (I think) the only treys for the Knights. Great slashing moves also by Kevin Racal; at last, he is beginning to assert himself more in offense.

Kevin Alas, though, was in all kinds of trouble in this game. Although he scored in double digits, I don't think he connected in any of his outside attempts. Similarly, he was either double- or triple-teamed every time he slashed to the basket, and his bail-out passes to the the bigs kept on getting stolen by the Lions. He tried to get the attention of the refs that he was getting fouled, but this tactic didn't always work. Memo to Kevin: Just play through it, son. You aren't going to get the calls all the time. Refs can be or can choose to be blind, you know.

This game showed Letran's glaring weakness. Employ a zone defense, surrender only the long shots, box out and control the rebounds, and you've got the Knights in trouble. We don't have a dead-eye shooter, and our forwards and SGs are erratic snipers at best. Ironically, our best outside shooters are Dysam and Mark Cruz, and they're primarily tasked with ball distribution. This situation makes one wish that JP Belencion be hired to act as shooting coach for Espiritu and Gabriel.

Still, the game had rather interesting highlights, like the following:

Funny sideshow: During the first quarter, we witnessed a battle of the dwarfs featuring Anjo Caram and Mark Cruz. Nagbalyahan at nagtulakan ang dalawa, hanggang sa natawagan ng offensive foul si Anjo. Inisip siguro ni Caram, "Sa wakas, nakakita na rin ako ng mas maliit sa akin! Maupakan nga!"

Weird sideshow: During the half-time cheer leading session of Letran, we had a horde of male and female cheerleaders in center court, with a flag-bearer running arround the court, trying to rally the crowd. As he approached the SBC side of the court, an 40-ish-looking male wearing a red San Beda Adidas jacket (alumni association official? team official? team financier?) stood up and tried to trip the Letran flag-bearer. The guy did this for a second time as the flag-bearer ran over the SBC side again. I later saw what looked to be elder Letran alumni going over to ringside to try to talk to the guy. A bit of a ruckus ensued, but was eventually smoothed over.

I personally thought that attempted trip -- whether it was meant as a joke or not -- was in bad taste. Imagine if the flag-bearer had actually been tripped, that most certainly have resulted in a melee inside the Arena. It's good that the flag-bearer did not even notice the attempts to trip him, as he was engrossed in his efforts to rally the crowd, and he was up into the stands rather than down at his feet. If he had reacted negatively to this, who knows what else would have happened?

Exasperating sideshow: There was a debris-throwing incident from the Letran side, but this time, it was directed at the referee for an obviously stupid call. Thankfully, this incident did not escalate, as cooler heads in the audience and on court prevailed. The upshot was, the referee eventually reversed the call and awarded the possession to Letran. Sus! Kailangan bang umalma ka pa nang husto para mapansin?!

Another exasperating sideshow: The resurgence of the "Beda tulo laway" jeer, and the "Iskwater" jeer. These idiots never learn.

So, we lost the twice-to-beat advantage. So what? Let's see what fate will bring us as our Final Four opponent, then we'll take it from there. Never give up, never give in! Arriba Letran!

Make him buff and stuff (look at anjo caram and ty tang) and I'm sure he'll bring havoc to other teams.

Sinabi mo...We really dont have consistent shooters. One that can shoot the lights out in a given night like Ronjay, Aldave and yes Belencion. I won't consider K.Alas as one as he is more of a slasher type scorer and his percentage in the 3pt is suspect. And if he is having an off night who picks up from there?...Vj Espiritu?!!

Vj' percent. in trifecta is even much worse! Out of 5/6 attempts natural lang may papasok na isa...at kung swerte dalawa. Against the stags last week swerte lang nun pumasok tres niya during overtime.

Anyways, we still have another shot after this loss. sana magimprove pa. Arriba!

Mukhang kasi laging ninenerbyos itong si Espiritu, unlike Belencion who has self-confidence as large as all outdoors! Tingin ko iyon ang talagang kulang kay Espiritu, hindi skill. Maybe we should invest in the services of a sports psychologist like the Ateneo Blue Eagles. I think that will do Espiritu a world of good.

Coach Louie badly need a reliable big men aside from Raymond Almazan and a legitimate shooting forward like Christian Calaguio and Jonathan Aldave.

1999 - Starting line up: Kerby Raymundo (6'6 Center), Orlan Tama (6'5) Power Forward, Jason Misolas around 6'3 (Small Forward), Christian Calaguio 6'0 (shooting guard) and JP Prior (5'7 PG)

off the bench: Allan Salangsang (6'5 Center/Forward who can shoot in the 3pt area), Erwin Velez @ 6'3 Forward, Billy Moody and JP Pacheco at guard position.

Pre-season favorite tayo nun after the departure of key players ng SSC-r na sila Adducul, Calpito, Encarnation, Tanigue and Ocampo. Sa SBC nawala na sina Ralph Rivera and Dino Manuel.

2003 - Starting line up: Jonathan Pinera and Erick Rodriguez both 6'4 can play forward-center, Jonathan Aldave @ Small Forward while Ronjay Enrile and Boyet Bautista for backcourt position.

Alternates: Aaron Aban, Mark Fedelicio, Billy Ray Anabo and John Realista.

Solid na solid ang starting five despite lack of ceiling. Unlike SSC-r na may Pep Moore @ 6'7 and Leomar Najorda standing 6'4. Cinderella story ang nanyari sa 2003 championship ng Letran.

2005 - Starting line up: Mark Andaya (legitimate 6'7 center), Erick Rodriguez at power forward, Aaron Aban (SF) and solid backcourt tandem of Boyet Bautista and JP Alcaraz.

off the bench: Bryan Faundo (6'6), Jonathan Aldave (super six-man), Billy Ray Anabo, and Hafer Mondragon tapos revelation nun finals rookie pa lang noon si RJ Jazul.

Ok ang current line up ng Letran pero wag tayo mag-expect a lot. Maybe next year since tayo host (1998 and 2005 tayo ang host noon tapos nag-champion) malay natin mangyari ulit for the third time.

Malaki ang improvement ni Raymond Almazan from last year. Laki ng panghihinayang ng Mapua nun tinapon nila yan at tayo nakinabang. Parang si Mark Andaya originally from Adamson.

Saw the Knights, together with Coach Louie, watching the SBC-SSCR game earlier. Hopefully, they were able to observe some chinks in the Stags' game plan that would serve us in good stead when we meet these guys in the Final Four. Arriba Letran, beat Baste!

BTW, congratulations to the Red Lions. Great show of poise in the end-game, particularly by Rome dela Rosa and Garvo Lanete.

razor
10-14-2011, 08:17 PM
^ the Red Lions were quite successful in containing Pascual; he was limited to 8 and 10 points in the last 2 games mainly with the denial defense of Rome dela Rosa and an occasional trap to force him to give up the ball. As a result, the Stags had one less option on offense and Abueva has been freelancing more than necessary leading to turnovers or forced shots.

Who among the Knights should shadow Pascual who appears to be the vital cog in the Baste offense?

Itapat ninyo si Mendoza kay Miranda, thrown out yan sigurado pareho ;D

at least sa inyo, di gaanong kailangan si Mendoza, sa kanila, first five nila yun.

@Regular Grey, good idea. ;D I myself have yet to see what Mendoza is good for, except for five extra fouls.

@razor -- I think Racal was the one who defended against Pascual the last time around, IIRC. He was successful for most of regulation, but Pascual exploded towards the latter end of the fourth and in overtime. Abueva, though, was double-teamed throughout and hammered every time he tried to penetrate. He got most of his points through free throws.

Baste is going into the f4 w back to back loss' from last week. Only the weekend to rest their weary bodies and then here comes another crucial game against the Knights on monday.

I guess we can capitalize on this...pagod pa ung Pinatubo trio and if anyone of the three is off, mas malaki ang pagasa natin to extend it to another game on wed....kung ang kabayo nga kelangan ng pahinga etong si tito calvin pa kaya ;D.

We did it once in 1999... lets do it again this year.
