The STI College Olympians are again on track to hopefully improve on their runner up finish in the 10th NAASCU. Preparations are underway with 12 members returning to the Olympians line up, three coming from the Juniors, one returnee and one new face.

If there is one thing going for the Olympians this year is their familiarity with each other and depth. Hope this year promises to be a better one.

MANILA, Philippines - STI Colleges got back at last year’s finals tormentor University of Manila, fashioning out a 90-72 rout at the start of the 11th NAASCU (National Athletic Association of Schools and Universities) basketball championships before an overflow crowd at the Makati Coliseum yesterday.

Maclean Sabellina turned in a double-double performance of 23 points and 12 rebounds as he powered the Olympians, handled by coach Vic Ycasiano, to victory in a rematch of last year’s title showdown.

Jasper Melano and Lester Bocablo added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for STI.

Jeff Alvin Viernes led the Jojo Castillo-mentored UM with 15 points, while last year’s MVP Eugene Torres and Jay-Ar Manuel added 14 points apiece.

The Hawks, seeking their seventh title in 11 years, played without slotman Edwin Tamayo and last year’s scoring champion Rhandelle Colina.

Now on its 11th year, the 10-team tournament formally opened yesterday with the traditional parade of teams and dance performances of member-teams.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios, PBA commissioner Chito Salud and MVP Sports Foundation head Al Panlilio delivered inspirational messages.

NAASCU president Dr. Ernesto Jay Adalem of host St. Clare College-Caloocan welcomed the guests and participants during the two-hour long opening ceremony.

Boss Mhel may residency period for transferees din ba sa NAASCU?

Joescoundrel
08-17-2011, 01:47 PM
^ Brod ako na sasagot kasi gusto ko din maging Aga Muhlach.

As a general rule there is a one-year residency period for any player who came from a UAAP or NCAA school.

If the player is from a fellow NAASCU school, again as a general rule, that player cannot transfer to another NAASCU school, unless his original school gives him a written release.

When we were still with Fatima, players who came from anywhere else (UCLAA, provinces, etc) did not need any residency at all. At the ttime however there was a general prohibition on players from NCRAA.

Foreigners also did not need any residency as a general rule, unless they fall under any of the circumstances above.

Tomorrow's game (September 26) will decide the top seeding entering the crossover semifinals on Wednesday. What ever happens, both STI and UM are assured of the twice to beat advantage over their respective opponents.

If STI wins, they will tie UM at 12-2 but will get the tie break by virtue of their two wins over the Hawks. If UM wins, they rise to 13-1 while STI will drop to 11-3.

The Olympians dealt the Hawks their only loss of the tournament during opening day, 90-72. Since then, the Hawks have won all their 12 games.

Waiting for the results are third seed CEU (10-4) and fourth seed Informatics (8-6). A win by STI will arrange a date with Informatics while a loss means playing CEU.

STI has mastered CEU this season, winning both games (60-53 and 67-63). Informatics dealt STI one of its two losses in the first round, 80-75. The Olympians exacted revenge uin the quarterfinals, 67-53.

FYI lang copied from the NAASCU website:

The final four will be on September 28, 2011 at the Makati Coliseum with the top ranked University of Manila Hawklets opening the curtains at 8:00 am against the St. Clare Baby Saints. The game will be followed by the defending champion Our Lady of Fatima Junior Phoenix going up against the AMACU Junior Titans at 9:30 am. The defending Champion and number one seed University of Manila Hawks take on the fourth placed Informatics International College Icons at 11:00 am while the second seeded STI College Olympians take on the Centro Escolar University Scorpions at 12:30 pm. We hope to see all NAASCU Fans at the games.

STI edges CEU, reaches finals with UM
(The Philippine Star) Updated October 04, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

MANILA, Philippines - STI Colleges brought down Centro Escolar University, 82-78, in their sudden death match to arrange a title showdown with defending champion University of Manila in the 11th NAASCU men’s basketball championship at the Makati Coliseum.

The Olympians leaned on rookie Jasper Melano and veterans Jerald Bautista and Cedri Ablaza in the final two minutes to stave off the hard-fighting Scorpions and arrange a clash with the Hawks.

Hassed Gabo topscored with 16 points for STI, followed by MacLean Sabellina and Melano with 13 points each and Abe Chavez and Bautista with 10 points apiece.

“We’re happy to be back in the finals again. The boys played well against CEU,” said STI coach Vic Ycasiano, who being assisted by Raymond Tiongco and Hubert de los Santos.

STI captured its first and only NAASCU crown at the expense of UM in 2006, ending Hawks’ five-year reign in the league.

“We hope to do it again this year,” added Ycasiano.

Rookie John David Orbeta carried the fight for the Mon Jose-mentored Scorpions with 15 points.

Two other rookies - Chris Dumapig and Mark Parale - added 21 points between them for CEU, which forced a rubber match following a 66-61 win over STI last Friday.

The game was close from start to end, but CEU failed miserably in the free throw area by missing six in the last two minutes.
