It was brief and calm. Will be going back again this Saturday for 2 days after my 5-day trip here in the Big Apple. Need to do some more shopping. Will also try to catch the game between Duke and Michigan State at the Garden tomorrow night.

Coach after browsing the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) forum, I, somehow understood kung bakit ayaw mong mag coach MMTLBA. Ang daming arm chair coaches :D. At napaka condescending ng mga posts.

Grabe diba?? I'd like to believe na mga bata pa yang mga nagpo-post dyan. Such angst. May napadpad sa Questions for Ironcoach dati sa Red Warriors Thread named alchua from the Tiong Lian Thread.
Kailangan talaga ng pagiingat sa pag post sa forum because, sometimes, your posts will show who you are.

How can it show who they are kung puro alias or undercover names lang naman ang makikita ng magbabasa?? Kung mababasa mo lang yung ibang mga nagpo-post sa mga nangyari kina Ali Peek at wife ni Billy Mamaril dun sa Pex, you'll for surely ask yourself "what has the world or mankind turned into?".

PEX is a different thing hehehe. it has become a venue to malign. It's not even worth going there.

I am actually speaking of those who post in certain forum in gameface. they can hide behind their aliases but, still, it shows their true character.

Eversince naman kasi some people resort to bullying tactics. But little do we know that in most instances, these people has had traumayic and unhappy childhoods. Moreover, naging victims pa ng child abuse or physical and verbal abuse when they were young. Kaya kung minsan mahirap din silang husgahan.

If we can only realize what these people had been through themselves. We just cannot play God.

I think Paul Lee would be a good example for that, di ba mas gumagawa yung Raffy Reyes nung HS?

But siguro the truth of the matter is that man grows with age and with all the experiences that he goes through in life.

And with a Lucio Tan Jr. behind you, mas madali ng tuparin ang mga pangako.

As far as dun sa nai-abono ko, pinapasa-Diyos ko nalang yan. After all, my best friend and benefactor's company also owns the institution that owes me naman so the amount owed can be easily converted or diverted to other means or favors.

Being in this business for so long, i know for a fact na malakas ang karma sa basketball. And as i've said or posted time and time again, wala akong problema dun sa institution na pinag-lingkuran ko per se but more on dun sa mga nagde-desisyon o nagmamani-obra nito.

Money can be earned or made up in time...but money, even if you have tons of it, cannot buy you time. And to the institution that i once served, its been 26 years of frustrations and heartaches already for your genuine supporters. Pls stop looking South for answers. As the name alone dictates, the answer should be or could be found in the East. ;)

I opted not to watch the MSU-Duke game tonite coz im with my dad and my kid on this trip and they'd rather go sight-seeing and walk-around on the never-ending nostalgia-filled spots here in New York City. I haven't gauge Duke this year although Austin Rivers could be the real-deal. I was able to watch on TV last week the UNC-MSU game aboard a US aircraft carrier on Veterans' Day and i wasn't impressed with MSU at all.

By the way, Duke beat MSU by 5 pts 74-69 and Coach K won his 903rd game and passed Bobby Knight for most wins in Division
1 history.

Hello Ironcoach,

Kudos! Your thread is a wealth of information for basketball junkies flavored with the occasional teachings on life. I have another reason now to visit GF everyday aside from viewing my school's forum.

I came to notice your thread only this week when I saw the notification that Lion posted something in it. I thought they were again engaged in a "lively" exchange with a gym owner. Your handle sounds like that gym owner they were talking to back in 2007. After reading the last 3 pages of your thread, I got more curious and started reading from page 1 beginning last night and finished its entirety this morning.

Btw, what's the story behind your handle? Mine was my CBer call sign derived from being a Sinatra & Battlestar Galactica fan.

Now I believe you are a far better person than what some people have portrayed you to be in GF. You are God-fearing and that is all that matters. You quoted Manuel Quezon in "I rather have a Phil run as hell by Filipinos than ..." and I will quote you one from the Great Book that reflects your person. Whatever is in the heart overflow into speech.

I hope you continue to post. You are candid and funny, and you write well (English 101 & Panitikan Pilipino). We get to brush up with our grammar aside from the basketball insight you provide. I look forward to meet you in a powwow my brethren will initiate.

Best wishes to your team(s) and I hope you get your ring soonest!

Alex Bernabe

PS. You might want to consult Lion on copyright laws re your posts. It is already your memoir-in-progress. Someone might profit on it without you earning a single cent. I also strongly urge you to back up your posts in multiple devices. It will be a treasured pamana for your son and future grandchildren.

There was also news buzzing around this morning about somebody trying to assasinate Pres. Obama. What timing! Lumayo na ako baka mapag-bintangan pa. Hehe!!!

Anyway, the White House naman daw is a good 16 blocks away from the Congress Building. : ;)

Yup, yup! Napuntahan ko na yung National Mall, the White House, Congress, Washington Monument, Lincoln and Jefferson Monument, pati narin yung mga puntod nina JFK, Jackie O, RFK at Ted Kennedy inside Arlington Cemetery.

Ngisay lang ang katumbas ng lahat. Grabe ang lamig dito. Tagos ng jacket at maong. But since, ika mo nga, mga historical sites, tiniis ko na coz its all worth it. Bonus na ito after my Boracay Rum team beat the hell out of my former team in the D-League last Tuesday. God is good...all the time!

If you took PAL, team pacquiao was the reason for the two hrs delay, both in departure and check-in baggage claim. Too much arrogance on his part.

Trivia: Inside the US Capitol, the tour guide will point to a spot where one can hear voices from another location on the floor because the sound is bounced off from the ceiling of the Capitol. Democrats and Republicans knew each other's plans/strategies because of this :D. Same at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The circular wall bounces off the sound from one side to the other side despite the structure in the middle.

Got in this morning from LAX via Guam. Touched-down Manila at exactly 6am then took the 7:20am flight to Taipei. Am now just waiting for jetlag to take effect. So far wala pa naman.

Wala naman akong napansin na hassle sa LAX prior to departure except na-delay yung take-off ng 1 hour. Marami raw kasing nilo-load na kargamento. I noticed yung haba ng pila sa check-in counters for economy passengers pero halos walang pila sa Business Class kaya madali kaming naka-check in.

SFO is the much better port of entry/exit for PAL travelers. Last June, Paul Lee, Ken Acibar and i had to drive 6 hours from L.A. to SFO and stay overnight just to catch a PAL flight back to Manila. Talk about being impractical.

Maybe next time. When it comes to UE, and about me, pwedeng either way ang sentiments dyan. Just like suspetsa ko na posible ngang may mga pumuri at humanga(at napa-picture) sa akin at the end of the UAAP 2009 Season, eh pumirma rin dun sa Petition not to re-hire me at the end of the UAAP 2010 Season. 'Yun sanang mga pwedeng i-develop, lalo na mga big man, barely get off the bench and see actual game time.

I would love to see the day na mga gaya for example nina Mon Mabayo, Raymond Aguilar at Jay Mo Egilos hindi lang pan-loob ang laro pero may consistent na pull-up jumper, at mas maganda na magdala ng bola sa halfcourt sets man lang. Si Mabayo kung ano laro sa STI ganun pa din sa Cafe France, same with Aguilar for NU and now for DUB, and of course si Egilos ninyo.

So saan 'yung sinasabi nilang development?

Or maybe I have a mistaken notion of the development aspect of the D League?

1) Finding players with Filipino roots to play in our professional league?

2) Finding schools in which we could put our Filipino basketball players to develop their skills?

Happy Thanksgiving Coach in US. :)

None of the above. Happy Thanksgiving, sir.

Play for pay while trying to impress professional teams for the future.

Lahat din ng teams na kalahok sa D-League are in it to win. Screw development. May gastos dito kaya pagalingan ang labanan dyan. Ang hindi ko lang nagustuhan as of now eh yung kawalan ng guidelines as far as recruitment or a drafting system. Look at NLEX, sila yung inaugural champion dito yet sa kanila parin napunta yung mga RR Garcia, Dave Marcelo, Eman Monfort, Garvo Lanete to add to the likes of Abueva, Sangalang, Pascual, Hodge and Ellis.

Ang nakakalungkot nito (pero tanggap ko na), malamang bago ito ma-solusyunan ng PBA in the near future, naka-dalawang Grand Slam na ang NLEX and nasa PBA D-League annals or record books na yan. With my team being the only PBL remnant in the D-League, i saw with my own eyes how past PBL teams vanished 1 by 1 during Harbour Centers 7 straight championship romp. Frustrations crept into these other teams then and sana the D-League doesn't suffer the same fate.

Coach UCLA under John Wooden won seven straight NCAA championships.

UE won seven straight UAAP championships under Baby Dalupan.

Nariyan pa din naman ang US NCAA at UAAP, and by the look of it still going strong over all these decades.

How bad could a dynasty really be to the long-term viability of a modern basketball league...?

You can't compare a collegiate league to a commercial league. Do you see UPHR, EAC, UP or Lyceum winning a UAAP/NCAA crown in the next decade?? Pero sasali at sasali yan every year coz school participation yan eh. Whereas in commercial leagues, pwede mag-disband at any given time for any given reasons. Semi-pro ang D-League just like the PBL in the past. It is PLAY FOR PAY.

Closer to the South coach. #9 vs. #23!

Galing naman! Isa kang tunay na basketball junkie talaga!
Taking advantage lang. I was hoping to catch a Rockets game. Unfortunately, it's No Basketball Association.

OT: the Longhorns-Aggies football game was awesome. It went down to the last field goal. Unfortunately, we just wathched via the boobtube.

Happy Thanksgiving, coach

Years ago, the NY Yankees were baseball champions year in year out. Because they got so much money from TV revenue in the lucrative tri-state area (NY, NJ and CT), they were able to sign the most talented and of course very expensive players. To level the playing field, salary caps were established and penalties/taxes were imposed on those who exceeded the salary caps. Baseball thus became more competitive and exciting...

Pero in fairness sa dalawang moneyed teams sa Pinas, it ain't their fault also na na-pera sila and at the same time willing to spend.

Its up to the tournament hierarchy to come up with creative solutions to have parity in their leagues. And to protect the smaller teams. In the NBA, teams like Cleveland, Toronto, Washington, the L.A. Clippers, Milwaukee and Portland has had cracks at the top pick in the rookie draft. Sa PBA D-League naman as of now eh labo-labo parin. Pataasan ng offer tsaka pagandahan ng pangako.

We won the championship of the 2011 World Veterans Basketball Tournament here in Taichung City, Taiwan last night. Our team, carrying the colors of Philiipine Airlines in this year's edition of the tournament, won all 4 games in our schedule to sweep our division.

Back-stopping the team was playing-manager Mr. Bong Tan and player-manager Mr. Dioceldo Sy of Blackwater Elite. Our players include Bobby Jose, Gerry Esplana, Rey Evangelista, Paul Du, Joey Sta. Maria, EJ Feihl and yours truly.

Its our first championship in this tournament after 5 years of participation. We finished 1st runner-up in 2007 in Guilin, China then coulnn't even get to the playoffs the following year in Shanghai even with Bong Alvarez, Jerry Codinera, Leo Austria, Alvin Teng, Joey Sta. Maria and Cesar Montano in the line-up, and was booted-out again in the elims in 2009 edition in Penang, Malaysia.

Next year's edition will be staged in Jakarta, Indonesia naman. Congratulations to our team, the Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Milers. I will finally be able to go home na tomorrow. Overall, i've been away for 38 out of the last 56 days and its time to buckle down to work na. And i'll also need to get my lubes some washing and greasing too. Its been a while, you know. ;)

Its not. We've been representing the Philippines in this tournament yearly kaya allowed ang Pinoy reinforcements. Most of our opponents are former National players kaya mabibigat at malalaki ang mga kalaban dito.

As i've said, our 2008 team with Teng, Codinera, Alvarez, Austria and Sta. Maria wasn't even able to get past the elimination round.

Ang PBA D-League ay itinatatag to replace the PBL and it caters to the PBA and not to the development of Philippine basketball in general.

You develop young aspiring cagers now then what??? Kaya whats the point??

Ang Dleague din is a way for the PBA to properly scout incoming talent especially players who were not able to play in the UAAP or NCAA. Kapg nakarating ka na ng PBA magaling ka na talaga at confidence and playing time na lang ang kailangan for a player to get to the next level.

If all the colleges are sincerely geared towards developing their college players, then how come halos lahat ng marquee college players eh nasa D-League?? And later on sana palarin makatuntong ng PBA. Its simple as that.

Me and some of my self-styled basketball experts/friends were just discussing those High School stars who scores in the 80's in the junior divisions. Where are they now?? Saret, Agovida, etc. How many years did it take for Cipriano to crack Ateneo's team A? Soc Rivera?? Whats the guarantee that Jeron Teng could really turn the fortunes around for the school that would eventually land him? But for sure he'd still land with a moneyed institution. Nothing wrong with that except that the rich will again get stronger while the poor will just get weaker.

Kaya nga the fool-proof, quick-fix formula that most college teams are resorting to these past few years is to hire an import anywhere in Africa. Hindi kaya somewhere down the road eh magkaroon narin ng drafting of high school players ang mga college leagues?? Just to level the playing field man lang??? Ano kaya??

Siyempre yung magaling. Magaling na point guard like Rudy Lingganay, magaling na off guard like Paul Lee, magaling na small forward like Val Acuna, magaling na power forward like Elmer Espiritu and yung magaling na center like Rabeh Al-Husseini.

Then preach to them nalang everyday about good moral character, hardwork, teamwork, humility, to be God-fearing and the value of acquiring a good education. Its all that simple.

Coach do you think there is still hope for underperforming big men in their early to mid-20's to develop enough skill to be a solid 10-year PBA player?

Two cases in point are with you: Jay Mo Egilos and Jerico De Guzman. Hinayang na hinayang ako sa dalawa na ito because they have great size and length, may athleticism pa ngang mapagmamalaki si Egilos because he's agile for a guy na 6'6" to 6'7". And yet parang hirap na hirap silang mag-produce ng good numbers consistently.

A guy like Egilos should be good for at least 12 points and eight boards and maybe a block or two per game over say 20-22 minutes, same with De Guzman, or even guys like Vince Tinte or Jojo Ambohot. Surely guys that tall and that long, if they knew how to position themselves and plant their feet and box out properly can at least get a few rebounds on the offensive end then stick those back for a basket. That way even if they never get any plays called for them they still produce, parang Marcus Camby, Dale Davis or Antonio Davis.

Some coaches and trainers might say all of those skills they should have learned in their early to mid-teens, and that it is now too late for them to learn any of those, old dogs na kumbaga. Still, nakapanghihinayang talaga tangkad nila, wala na ba talaga pagasa mga ganitong players?

Habang may buhay may pag-asa. I don't know Tinte and Ambohot but if you're young, willing to work hard and its in your destiny, there will always be that light at the end of the tunnel.

Bakit hindi ka manghinayang for Ford Arao, Mark Andaya, Ken Bono, yung De Leon ng Baste na kasabayan ni Jason Ballesteros, kay Oliver Agapito, Oliver Bunyi, Angelus Raymundo, Nat Cruz, Eric Suguitan, Abby Santos, etc. Im sure most of those guys weren't also able to have a 10-12 year careers too.

The difference with the NBA and our PBA is the number of participating teams. Sa dami ng NBA teams, even mediocre big men, isama mo na yung mga foreigners like Muresan of Romania, Manute Bol of Sudan, Bateer Menk of China and Ha of Korea eh nabibigyan din ng chance. Would you believe that Darko Milicic got drafted ahead pa nga over Carmelo, Wade & Bosh???

Kung may 16 teams man lang sana ang PBA eh malamang marami-raming so-so Pinoy big men ang employed sana.

Has it ever occured to you why after 36 seasons, 10 teams lang parin ang kalahok sa PBA?? And to think that 7 of those teams are owned by only 3 owners. So if you do the math, 6 team owners lang ang kasali sa isang 36 years old professional league.

So before we question or scrutinize the talents that we have around, we should probably train our arrows elsewhere. Did the PBA price itself off the ceiling? Had the perennial PBA politics turned-off potential applicants?? Maybe if they had me take charge of that league 6-8 years ago, we'll probably have around 14 pro teams by now. It is a hard sell thats why you'll need a hardcore salesman.

Valid naman ang point mo coach and I agree na hindi nga lahat ng colleges ay nag-cocontribute sa skills ng kanilang players. But there are those who do contribute to them especially yung may mga magandang programs.

Ang tingin ko naman coach sa D-league yes indeed it is a play for pay but since nakakakalaban ang mga college players sa mga former pros and quality Filfors, the varsity guys are toughened up and polished in that sense.

My Boracay Rum team has games on Dec.5 & 7 and we gotta win those to increase our chances of getting into the D-League playoffs. Except for 2 teams, 9 other teams are in a neck to neck battle for the 6 playoff slots.

This early, i've gotta seed the NLEX Road Warriors, the Cebuana Lhullier Gems and the Freego Jeansmakers with the 1st 3 slots while the Big Chill Superchargers & the Blackwater Elite are in very good positions to grab playoffs seats as well. I would say that at this point, my team has 1 foot inside and 1 foot outside the door thats why our 2 games next week might as well be cosidered do or die matches. Merry Christmas

Having played for Ateneo for some time, these 2 boys aren't lacking in skills & fundamentals( plus some smarts ). And now getting the playing time from a coach who trust them and have inserted them into the rotation, there's nothing that would stop these guys from contributing & shining for their new commercial team.

With Ateneo naman, Bacon was in their 2nd unit last season and he had a role naman in their scheme of things. Sumalinog was in the 3rd unit and siyempre kapag UAAP na, a coach seldom goes that deep sa substitution pattern considering na every game sa UAAP is life and death.

Nung 2009 season nga i think i played only 8-9 players lang in most of our games. I was there primarily to win games and not to soothe players' (or their family and fans) ego.

Its mostly about kuryente and lousy moves. Bragging about some issues(parati lang kaming All-Filipino!!!) pero ka-kambyo rin lang pala matapos ma-untog. Tsaka yung pagsali sa commercial league para magka-experience daw ang mga players samantalang lampas kalahati ng team eh hugot naman pala from other schools. Sayang lang yung (roughly) 2M na budget (not to mention yung waste of time practicing with players from other schools). Duh!!

Good morning coach. I've just been lurking around. It's not really a battle of the sexes. The report of Joey Villar is grossly inaccurate as far as that angle is concerned. At least the pictures will show that the lady stags were obviously not the targets but their coach who allegedly threw the first punch.

If ever there was a lady stag who got hurt, it's because she shielded her coach from harm. We all know that that would be a natural, but unintended, consequence. Once a punch is thrown, you won't be able to stop the momentum. Pag biglang may humarang, tatamaan talaga. My heart goes to the lady stag who got hurt. Just like in the movies when the heroine would take the bullet for her man, you can't accuse the shooter of intentionally shooting the heroine although she was the one who was shot. This is just my opinion though.

As we can read from the reports, the fight was an off shoot of a racist remark thrown by the SSC men's volleyball team against Ola Adeogun right in our own home. A heated discussion occurred, Roger Gorayeb, a guest in our own home, threw the first punch and Frankie was hit in the jaw. And the pictures show us what probably happened after that.

I'm sure Frankie and the players who were involved will be sanctioned. But so should Gorayeb and those coward SSC men's volleyball players who ran away, leaving the lady stags to protect their coach from harm.

Very unfortunate indeed. Considering that some of the people involved were 50 year olds na surrounded by a whole bunch of gullible adolescents.

As we grow older, we shouldn't allow our emotion to get the better of us.

I've whacked a couple of refs (never above the neck) in the past, pulled their whistles out of their mouths on some ccassions, but i suppose thats about it. Im well oriented of the fact that i am being hired for what's in my brains and not for what's on my fist.

Kung masaktan pa ako i doubt if my employers would pay for the hospital bills. And kung ako naman ang makasakit, i also doubt if my employers would provide me with a lawyer.

So much have been said and heard about coaches getting involved in skirmishes, shoving ang shouting matches, but at the end of the day, the worst thing that a coach will suffer is that of being called "bakla".

I don't know this fellow but if he's really such a bad ass, why did they still allow him to get out of there alive?? And considering that he was ganged up by a basketball team starring a burly 6'5, 300 lbs. mastadon, it didn't seem like the old, girl's volleyball coach got badly hurt.

Nakapagpa-interview at nakapag-twitter pa nga yata right after the incident so maybe matibay nga itong taong ito eventhough may edad na. And if he's really a bad ass as you've perceived him to be, malamang bu-bwelta pa yan. To think na halos magka-tapat lang ang Beda at Baste, baka magpapalamig lang ng sitwasyon yan for a while before striking back.

Even in history books, we've read about paybacks. What kind of heart does this old coach possess for anyone to even tnink that he'll let that incident go by just like that??

Just because of a sudden burst of emotion, now people have no other recourse but to keep watching their backs. Magpa-Pasko pa naman.

We live in a country where its common to hear abt some people shoot a complete stranger from behind then scoot away for a few hundred bucks. We live in a country where its common to read abt young female students with their future still in front of them get gang-raped then stabbed a hundred times then have her naked body dumped in a grassy, muddy area. We live in a country where even car side mirrors and tire caps get stolen, where some people, after stealing your car, burn the car owners body down to ashes. WHAT DA???

When do we start fighting to end all of these violences? When do we begin to control the urge to commit these violences? When? When we already cannot??? God forbid.

I don't really know the guy so i couldn't really tell. But its also a point of contention why he took a swing at Frankie (assuming thats really the case). Was he provoked? Was he put on the defensive? We won't really know now coz for sure everybody will now be telling their own version of their innocence.

Just between these 2 giants, i think that Greg is better. Advantage niya yung experience niya with Smart Gilas eventhough he was used sparingly, pero na-utilize niya to the fullest ang lahat ng na-acquire niyang skill s and experience while playing a starring role in the UAAP with Ateneo.

We ( nung nandun pa ako sa kanila) played Fajardo only once in my 2 years there and absent pa ako nung game na yon.
I believe i was in the U.S. that time and didn't bother to rush home na coz i knew my boys can handle UC without breaking a sweat kahit na may Fajardo pa sila.

All i can say is that whoever is handling or managing this kid, they're guiding his basketball future in the wrong direction. With his height, he'll make it to the PBA easily. But for him to be a dominant force in the pros, i don't think so.

Samigue Eman 2.0 at best yan.

Naisip ko rin na how i wished that people could find it in their heart to fight violence and change for the better ON THEIR OWN. Pero recently nag-give up na ako and i believe kailangan na ng government intervention.

Yung kultura ng violence eh malalim na dito sa atin & i don't see any hope at the end of the tunnel and TODAY, have no other recourse but umasa at manalig kay P-Noy.

But maybe nowadays, most parents would get mad to find out na yung baon na sandwich ng anak eh ibinigay ng anak sa iba.

Time has really changed. 50 years of corruption and greed have taken its toll and have destroyed the lives, character and spirits of many Filipinos and have also destroyed our country as a whole. If we're seeing some moneyed folks within our midst, stop and observe the majority of the people nationwide and you'll realize why violence has prevailed all around us.

But if yung mga moneyed folks ang mag-resort sa violence, they're just simply sick between the ears and just don't know any better.

Obviously, kung may diperensya man kay Japeth sa paglalaro niya, its not with his skills and God-given gifts(height, wingspan, quickness) but maybe yung determination, confidence and experience.

Could be that his head and heart were shot when he rode the bench with Gilas. Could be that mali-mali ang mga advises na nakukuha niya. Maybe lahat ng mga naririnig nating bulung-bulungan about him, eh nariri ig din niya. Maybe if i were his coach, i'd sit him down and try to have a heart to heart talk.

Maybe all he needs is a big doze of tender love and care.

Coach wala ka bang balak mag-apply as analyst sa PBA? Halos wala kasing analysis ngayon from a coach's point of view except in the Finals. Pero more often than not kahit dun pa sa mga team huddles sa PBA na naririnig natin sa TV, coaches usually call their players on a first name or nickname basis. Siguro ang gusto lang naman ni Japeth eh yung bigyan siya ng importansya sa team which he's starting to realize is easier said than done in a star-studded TNT line-up.

Obviously may attitude problem si Japeth and if the order of the day is to fully realize the potential of this kid, psy-war or reverse psychology nalang ang gawing approach. But if the order of the day is to not tolerate him, then maybe they should trade him instead.

Its mostly about kuryente and lousy moves. Bragging about some issues(parati lang kaming All-Filipino!!!) pero ka-kambyo rin lang pala matapos ma-untog. Tsaka yung pagsali sa commercial league para magka-experience daw ang mga players samantalang lampas kalahati ng team eh hugot naman pala from other schools. Sayang lang yung (roughly) 2M na budget (not to mention yung waste of time practicing with players from other schools).

ironcoach welcome back and congrats to your son in finishing his academic program, coach medyo bitin ako dun sa post mo about sa UE Basketball program. I believe they are now recruiting aggressively foreign players and fil-am contrary to their initial stand "all filipino team in the UAAP MBT". Same observation the win less COBRA are not bound to develop UE RW coz they are barely used inside the court (very limited yung playing time) mas malaki playing time nung mga players from other schools. So where is the point of developing UE RW who is a just a mere spectator riding in the bench???? With those kind of program eh kailan kaya matatapos yung paghihintay namin ng CHAMPIONSHIP. Hello sir. Thanks for congratulating my son. But maybe madalas mo naman ako binabasa dito. Thanks.

About your school's basketball agenda, i've almost moved on na since its been almost a year already and yung withdrawal period almost complete narin. I can now comfortably state that i couldn't care less whatever happens to that team anymore.

Yung performance nila in the last UAAP, yung performance nila sa D-League now, tsaka yung mga ibinida na in less than half a year eh kakambyo rin lang pala. Yung current success ni Paul Lee sa PBA and turning his back to playing his last year of
collegiate eligibility out of loyalty to me and for being able to distinguish right from wrong, ang lahat ng yan eh vindication narin for me.

Ikaw narin ang naghayag dito ng frustration mo with regards to how your school team is being handled and managed. In a way may kasalanan din kayong mga alumni and supporter dyan sa mga pangyayari coz in a way, tinolerate niyo rin yung mismanagement ng team. Hinahayaan niyo lang umiral ang pulitika instead of wanting to become progressive.

Umpisa palang itong pagbabayad sa mga atraso. Wala kasing accountability dyan sa inyo unlike the other institutions. Maling prinsipyo rin ang pinaiiral. Tinanggal niyo yung coach via petition letters and staged signature campaign, just a year after leading
the team to the UAAP Finals. Out of genuine love for the team eh nag-abono pa ng malaking halaga na hindi na pala mababayaran.

How do you expect the heavens to react? Di ba posible ring pagbayarin kayo? If i were you, instead of worrying about winning basketball games, i'd worry first about character, about principle. Maybe then you'll find your answer to all your questions regarding your beloved basketball team.

Good morning sir zoom. People are always welcome to their own opinions and beliefs and lets leave it at that. Si RedEngr naman i can sense eversince na nakaka-salimuho ko siya is a logical and very intelligent person. He can very well distinguish for himself between right and wrong.

Kaya lang naman hindi mamatay-matay ang issue na ito is because i really felt short-changed by the whole scenarios surrounding my dismissal from the institution that i once served. But its all water under the bridge now and i suggest that we all move on na.

I noticed that the number of views on this thread rose by nearly a hundred eventhough nobody, me included, posted anything here the past couple of days.

I know for a fact that you'll hardly learn anything from browsing through this thread, and it inevitably would just be, for all intent and purposes, a complete waste of your precious time. But the outpour of interest has overwhelmed me and simply because of that fact, i hope i've been able to entertain and amuse each and everyone of you.

Merry Christmas, Coach!!!

May your tribe increase and I wish you success in your personal and professional endeavors. Mabuhay ka!!!

Maraming salamat sir Lion.

The pleasure is mine, Coach. PAX!

Well, 1 point of interest about my career nowadays is that its officially the start of the Yuletide Drinking Season for me. We've played our last official PBA D-League game for the year yesterday and will resume on January 3, 2012.

The next 2 weeks top priority is to be merry and to party!! Booze and Bitches...here i come!!!! ;)

The Semerad's thread has 20,000 views??? Are you serious?? Is there really anything interesting about those brothers? Could it be that viewers mistook them for the Younghusbands?? Have they been posting pics of them showing their abs?

Coz if not, i really couldn't figure out what the fanfare is all about. Maybe aside from their Tisoy-looks, i don't see any other reasons why there's such a big fuzz about them transferring elsewhere.

Maybe its just the supporters of 1 school seeking a pagtanaw ng utang na loob from these Fil-foreigners, and thats about it. Im pretty sure it ain't over their basketball skills and talent coz in my opinion...these guys ain't got (much) game.

Oo nga no!!

We cannot competely get out of the grid, but we do have a choice to work within the system, change ourselves together with the system, and eventually short-circuit or sabotage the system to replace it with a better one.

Last night's Rain or Shine-Ginebra game was one hell of a wild game. RoS was down like 17 pts with 9 mins. left in the last quarter and still managed to pull it off in OT. They scored 43 pts. in the last quarter and it was just crazy. It was quite amusing to say the least.

As early as 3 years ago eh putok na putok na ang pangalang Gary David sa PBA. Nagkataon lang siguro na his teams, except for that 1 time na umabot ang Air21 sa finals a few years back, don't figure prominently sa playoffs.

Eto nga raw yung 1st time in the last 8 conferences na hindi na-eliminate ng maaga ang Powerade. But as a winner??

Kita mo naman yung reactions at demeanor niya nung ma-interview siya after nila manalo against B-Meg. Would you see or witness the same bravado from, say, a James Yap, LA Tenorio or Alex Cabagnot??

But lets give that night to David. Gabi niya talaga yon. Hopefully its not good for just 1 night.

I believe so. Gary wouldn't have been a PBA 1st round draft pick if he hadn't made waves in the amateurs. Highly-touted din siya coming out of the PBL. Im also aware na siya yung leading scorer (average-wise) in the PBA these past few conferences.

There is absolutely no doubt that he's a scoring machine, and can fill it up with the best of them. El Granada nga eh!

Me and longtime former UE basketball team utility man Mang Rene are right now just counting how many former UE players are now plying their trades in the PBA. We just finished our Boracay Rum team practice and are waiting for lunch to be served.

We noticed that of the 10 PBA teams, only Petron and Talk and Text don't havea single UE player on their rosters. Here's the list that we came up with:

James Yap, Val Acuna (B-Meg), Rob Labagala, KG Canaleta, Ronald Tubid (GSM), Paul Lee (RoS), Mark Borboran (Meralco), Paul Artadi, Ken Acibar (Barako), Rudy Lingganay, James Matrinez (Powerade), Bonbon Custodio, Hans Thiele (Alaska), Paulo Hubalde, Elmer Espiritu (Shopinas).

So if you do the math, assuming each PBA team has a 15-man roster, 10% of all the current professional basketball players in the country came from UE. Galing ah!!!

From this list, sina Mark Borboran and Bonbon Custodio lang ang mga hindi ko naging players. The rest either naging players ko in college or in the PBL.

Just got home from Ken Acibar's 22nd birthday salu-salo, Tondo-style. They had the usual...papaitan, lechon manok, grilled rellenong bangus, pancit and bopis. I brought Boracay Rum (cappucino & melon flavor) to add to their bar list of San Mig Light, Red Horse and, of course, Emperador Light.

Paul Lee came at around 9pm while i got there before 10pm. Some of the folks were playing the song "Hari Ng Tondo" by Glock9 non-stop on a karaoke machine as a tribute to the "Angas Ng Tondo" when i got there.

Paul left at around 11pm then at the stroke of midnight, Elmer Espiritu showed up. It was a non-stop photo-op event with my 3 UAAP Mythical 5 babies. I think i had more pictures taken than beer consumption but its Christmas anyway.

Finally, the 2011-2012 NBA Season will be opening today. A long-drawn lock-out prevented the league from starting almost 2 months ago, therefore depriving us fans of topnotch basketball entertainment.

The NBA lockout could serve as a case study among our local pro basketball leaders in as far as basketball operations are concerned. I just thought that a lot of lessons were learned in that episode.

This is one of those Christmases wherin giving will mean so much more than receiving.

Marami ang nangangailangan ng tulong natin. Panahon na para kumilos.

20,000 views on this thread today. Thats 20,000 views in 8 months. What can you say or whats your opinion on that?

A couple of weeks ago iniisip ko na kung aabot ba ito ng 20,000 views bago mag-New Year, and these past few days pa eh parang nasobrahan sa X'mas party yung mga suki natin dito.

Hey! 20,000 views in 8 months. Not bad at all. Nangangamoy lurkers lang nga. Sana lang hindi mga taga-FBI. :)

Haha! Like! Got a text message from a renowned sportswriter early this morning and meron siyang rush question for his column tonight (evening tabloid). His question: who, in my opinion, are the top 3 PBA players of 2011? My answer(with difficulty): Arwind Santos, Mark Caguioa & LA Tenorio.

The sportswriter's reply: hindi kasama si Paul Lee?

Reply ko: all of 2011 ang question mo and 3 months palang na PBA player si Paul Lee.

The sportswriter reply: Tama!

25hrs left in 2011. Wow! Its 2012 na. Time does fly! Whatever it is that happens within and around us, it all goes away or becomes meaningless in time. Happy today then sad tomorrow and vice-versa. Hero today, heel tomorrow. Well-loved 1day, unwanted the next. With time, everything in life is...FLEETING. Its a guide for us not to take life so seriously. Cheers!

But sayang naman ang buhay at panahon kapag you don't allow things to happen or evolve around you. Seize the moment nalang diba. Like if mahal ka today, i-treasure at ika-ligaya mo.

But after all had been said and done, you've gotta wisen up. The experience has to make you a better person with a better understanding the next time around.

Kung manalo ka today, rejoice. Just don't let it sink in too deep so if someday matalo ka naman, hindi ka mag-mukhang tanga. Kapag matalo, ok lang. Ika nga sa basketball lingo..bawi nalang tayo. Work harder, stay more focused, dagdagan ang determinasyon at pag-planuhan pa ng mabuti.

So it only goes to show that in being unloved or in losing, you can gain more. Steady can be boring diba? Dapat namnamin everything that life has to offer.

Coach happy new year po.

Coach, curious lang. Based on your experience, may I ask how would you rank the three aspects below in terms of impact in winning a particular game? I know all items are important but in order of priority which one matters the most and which one is second? Or is it also a matter of one's taste, style and/or preference in terms of coaching?
1. Possessions battle
2. Offensive efficiency
3. Defensive disruption

Salamat.

#1 offensive efficiency-this game is still all about putting the ball into the hoop
#2 defensive disruption-you can make all the baskets you can all game long but if you allow your opponent just enough baskets on their own, you might still end up losing the game in the end
#3 possessions battle-im ranking this category 3rd and last coz whats the point of gaining more possession if you can't cash in on them?

Honestly, i just wanted Paul Lee to enter the finals in his maiden professional conference. Against whom? It doesn't really even matter. But getting by Powerade is easier said than done.

If Powerade does make it to the finals, i'll also be happy for my other former players (Adducul, Lingganay & Martinez). Quinahan and Buenafe are also former players.

Today's PBA D--League knockout game result: Boracay Rum 71 PC Gilmore 41. We got 1 foot inside the quarter-finals already and awaiting the results of the Blackwater-Big Chill & Blackwater-Pacific Pipes games.

If Big Chill should beat Blackwater this Thursday, we'll officially be in the quarter-finals. But should Blackwater win, we have to pray that Blackwater doesn't lose to Pacific Pipes by 2 or 3 or 4 points. Or else, due to the quotient system in case of a 3-way tie, my team will get yhe boot.

Right now, both NLEX & Cebuana Lhuillier have already clinched the top 2 spots (automatic semis berth) while Freego Jeans & Big Chill have also secured quarter-finals berth. PC Gilmore, Cafe France, Cobra Energy Drink & DUB Limited have been eliminated. Its now down to 2 to go in & 1 out among Boracay Rum, Blackwater & Pacific Pipes.

We would've advanced outright into the quarter-finals of the PBA D-League after our huge win today (our last game in the elims) if not for a terrible blunder (i really wanted to use the word stupidity) committed by the Cobra Energy Drink team. Their win against Blackwater was forfeited because they fielded a player (Jonathan Belorio of Letran College) who wasn't on their Active Roster. Blackwater was therfore declared the winner of that game eventhough they lost terribly, and eventhough Mr. Belorio didn't even play significant minutes (0 points).

In the D-League, you can suit up or sit-out (hire and fire) any Filipino player under 27 years old as you please as long as you INFORM (email/written) the PBA Office at least 24 hours before your scheduled game.

My team would've been 2 win-games ahead of Blackwater, therefore safely inside the quarter-final round but instead, because of an unprecedented blunder that could go down as a 1st in PBA history, there's a slim possibility that we might miss the boat.

I wonder what the management and coaching staff of the Cobra basketball team will do now with the won-game bonuses of the players for winning (forfeited after 1 day) their game (would've been their 2nd win for this conference) yesterday??

Ibigay pa kaya? Naibigay na kaya? Bawiin pa kaya?? Its not really a lot of money but it is still not their money. The company could very well throw away that amount of money since its just loose change. Barya lang.

And the blunder or the comedy committed can just be easily shrugged off as well. Part of growing up. Learning process. No need to seek for accountability. And its all that matters. :D

The PBA D-League operates exactly just like the PBA since the 2 tournament exist under the same umbrella and even shares the same commissioner (pati nga TV coveror diba) although the expenses, operation cost and budget are a lot smaller.

I believe it is mandatory. And yung salary cap per player sa D-League is P30,000 per month although there are allegedly marquee players receiving under the table salaries that bring their total from P50,000-P60,000 per month.

Like in the case of my team, there are times that we give x2, x3 and so on for winning games consecutively pero yung mga salaries ng players namin ranges from P12,000 to P20,000 lang this conference since mga upstarts and no-names palang ang mga nasa roster namin. But may P100 daily practice allowance ( transportation) din sila aside from free lunch every practice days.

Coach, Jasmine Payo of the Inquirer told me that Butch Maniego, the D League's tournament director, has recommended the forfeiture of Cobra's win last Monday.

She added that the final decision will come from Comm. Salud.

We'll find out before today's games if the forfeiture will be upheld by Salud.

ironcoach
01-12-2012, 03:37 PM
It had already been forfeited. Just because they fielded Jonathan Belorio of Letran into the game without first informing the PBA office 24hrs in advance which had been the SOP or basic procedure. They had relegated Belorio to Reserve status a month ago and must have forgotten all about it after too much merry-making during the Christmas lull.

To think that Belorio had 0 points and wasn't even a factor in that particular game. Just a terrible mismanagement to a team that is wanting in win games and a waste to the half a million peso participation fee that Asia Brewery shouldered just for them to be able to join.

A simple email or letter lang and even that they couldn't comply. Now, the reversal and forfeiture of that game will have an adverse effect on my Boracay Rum team. Instead of Blackwater going down to 3-5 that would've ensured my team safe passage into the quarter-finals, they're now 4-4 and breathing down our necks (we're 5-5).

But im sure bale-wala lang sa Cobra management yan. I don't think they know their basketball over there in the first place. And a few million pesos to them is also just peanuts.

Now, my team, Boracay Rum is officially in the PBA D-League quarter-finals cast where we'll face either Big Chill or Freego Jeans with a twice to beat disadvantage. January 19 at the Ynares Sports Center along Shaw Blvd. 2pm ang 1st game and 4pm ang 2nd game. Im just not sure whether we'll be playing in the 1sr or 2nd game.

The game between Blackwater Elite vs Pacific Pipes on Jan.17 will be a K.O. match for the last quarterfinals berth. If Blackwater wins then we will be seeded 6th. Should Pacific Pipes prevail, we'll be seeded 5th. As it stands, NLEX is #1 and Cebuana Lhuillier is #2. the top 2 teams are assured of slots in the semis while the #3 seed faces off with the #6 seed and the #4 and #5 seeds also squares-off in the quarter-final phase with #3 & #4 having a twice to beat advantage.

Big Chill and Freego Jeans are in 3rd & 4th spot although im not sure who went 3rd or 4th between the 2 teams. For sure 1 of those 2 ang makakalaban namin tapos we have to win twice para makapasok ng semis. A tall order indeed pero laban lang.

Marami palang Red Lions ang scattered among the PBA D-League teams. Lanete & Marcelo with NLEX, Jake Pascual & Villahermosa with DUB Wheelers, Sorela & Melo Lim with PC Gilmore. I believe Dela Rosa & Caram are also in some team's roster pero di ko lang sure.

I had wanted to tie-up with the SBC team before the start of the tournament wherein i could've tapped at least 6 Red Lions and mix them up with some of my own players pero i knew from the get-go na the better ones would definitely play for a Pangilinan team (NLEX).

And if magka-conflict pa sa sked ng Red Lions with their other committments, baka mapilitan pa akong maglaro niyan para huwag lang ma-default. ;)

Coach,

Rome was not allowed to play because he was required to submit a BID/DOJ certification that he is a filipino citizen. His birth certificate and Philippine passport were deemed by the PBA insufficient to prove his qualification under the PBA rules.

Same problem was encountered by Kyle Pascual.

I think a lot of Fil-foreigners in the college ranks were unable to play because of this strange requirement.

Hey! How's it been, my busy buddy? Yep! It is a strange requirement, i've gotta admit. I had the same problem with VJ Espiritu of Letran sa team ko.

The kid had to go thru some paper works that needed to be resolved back in the US that i deemed it best to just drop him off my teak. I felt that coach Louie Alas wasn't too happy with my decision but i had to protect the best interest of my team above anybody else.

Like in the case of Chris Camus of the Blackwater team. He played for me na in the PBL before pero sa D-League he had to produce a BID recognition certificate pa for him to be able to play.

Ayaw ko ng umangal at pumalag sa mga patakaran even if it runs counter to my beliefs. When in Rome, live as the Romans do na ang motto ko ngayon. Ayaw ko ng maranasan pa ang may ipaglaban ako ng todo-todo tapos at the end of the day, hindi ka rin naman pala maa-appreciate. Or baka maging kontrabida ka pa. Sabay nalang sa agos.

First and foremost siguro eh dapat mahilig sa basketball ang may-ari ng company. Yung tax break tsaka sales im sure matic na yan. Pinag-uusapan nalang yung more or less.

Lahat naman ng team owners hanap ang mag-champion the sooner the better. Kaming mga coaches dapat gaun din. But as we know, we have iba-ibang klaseng mga team owners din.

The Dallas Mavericks won their 1st title after 31 years. The N.U. Bulldogs last won a UAAP title back in the 50's.

After 10 seasons in the PBA, the Bert Lina franchise hasn't also won a single title but what did they do??? They bought for themselves a 2nd franchise diba? Hilig eh.

Ateneo, San Beda, TNT, Meralco, Smart Gilas (yung Meralco pa sa soccer league) and NLEX nga.

Very successful businessman rin si Mr. Pangilinan kaya siguro pwede naring sundin ng ibang mga companies or businesses ang formula ni Mr. Pangilinan when it comes to marketing and advertising. Get into sports! Or put up a basketball team (kung may pera rin lang).

Paul Lee's moment of truth in his young PBA career today. A win by his team would force a game 7 in their semi-finals match-up against Powerade while a loss would relegate them to the battle for 3rd place.

This is what competitors live for. The challenges, the cliff-hangers and the obstacles. This is not for the weak of heart amd only the strong-willed will survive. ;)

My Boracay Rum team will also face elimination this Thursday in the PBA D-League quarter-finals round against either Freego Jeans or Big Chill. this is the best time to be in Hong Kong. 13-16 degrees. perfect!

people in winter clothes, the yummy variety of food, the night-out at Lan Kwai Fong...but yung weather talaga ang the best. 2nd honorable-mention nalang yung roast goose rice. ;)

you can't have it any better.

Hahahaha! World class ang Filipino performers diyan.

Paul Lee and RoS have fought off elimination today and forced a winner take all match vs Powerade on Wednesday. Hope that phrase hold true for Paul and his teamates come Wednesday and also for me and my Bora Boys on Thursday.

Its gonna be quite a nerve-wracking week pala. Should've just stayed put in Hong Kong. ;) If we should lose this Thursday...mahaba-habang inuman ito until the next D-League conference. ;)

Coach this might have been asked already before.. Sa panahon ngayon, Ano usually inooffer (you know what i mean) ng mga big time schools sa mga blue chip players coming out of HS besides scholarship?

If your basketball career doesn't pan out, pwede mong pakinabangan yung La Salle at Ateneo diploma mo.

Kaya kung konti lang ang difference ng offer ng NU as compared sa mga offers ng Ateneo and La Salle, the blue chip recruit ends up going to either La Salle or Ateneo. How much do you think is NU paying Ray Parks (and Bobby Sr.)?? To Mbe? Ateneo(or MVP) to Slaughter and Ravena? La Salle to Jeron Teng?

Le me clarify that.

Schools invariably offer the same package, i.e., scholarship, dorm and free meals. Ke Ateneo yan o NU. Ke San Beda yan o Perpetual. Ke UST yan o UE.

All the other perks that make a difference are offered/given by the alumni/benefactor of the schools, e.g., monthly allowances, apartment/condo units (free use only while playing for the school), cars (usually second-hand), trips abroad, overseas training, clothing allowance, etc.

coach_of_steel
01-16-2012, 06:53 PM
To be technical and accurate about it, sa mga sponsors, alumni or boosters nga nanggagaling ang mga perks aside from the basic (scholararships, meals & dorm) freebies that a school is allowed to offer.

Thanks Lion for setting it straight. :)

As compared sa UAAP talagang inferior sobra ang NCAA. Tulad nalang these past 3 seasons, opening day palang alam mo ng Beda- Baste na ang maglalaban sa finals. Especially that season na may Angeles University Foundation...it was a complete joke. No offense but do you see EAC, UPHR, Lyceum & CSB cobtending for a final 4 spot at anytime soon??

Yung suking kulelat lately ng UAAP na University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons might even be able to contend for a final 4 slot kung nasa NCAA sila.

Im describing this as a whole ha. Malalakas naman yung Beda, Baste, MIT, JRU & Letran kaya lang if these 5 teams play the other 4 (in fairness good showing ang Lyceum last season) teams, napakaraming boring games masyado. Sayang lang ang kuryente sa Arena. Sana trim it down to 8 teams para hindi rin napaka-haba at boring yung isang season.

As i've said, opening day pa nga lang alam mo ng inevitable na Beda-Baste na sa finals. The other teams are just waiting for Abueva, Sangalang & Pascual to graduate. ;)

We just played a knockout game vs PC Gilmore last Tuesday then our next game, knockout game uli. Twice to beat pa ang makakalaban namin so that means, assuming we manage to survive in our next game, knockout game uli yung kasunod nun.

The PBA has scrapped the battle for third place. If ROS loses tomorrow, the Painters get 4th place.

Commissioner Salud's decision to remove the battle for third is good because it would be useless for the two semifinal losers to play another game after coming out of a tough semis loss

Oh! Thanks for the info, James. Personally, i like the idea of scrapping the battle for 3rd place, hopefully for good. For 1, kelangan pang maglabas ng pang-win game bonus ng team na mananalo sa battle for 3rd eventhough nagdurugo pa ang mga puso nila for not being able to reach na finals. Masama na ang loob tapos gagastos pa.

Secondly, it cheapens the appearance of a particular PBA team and/or PBA player. Dapat bawat appearance ng mga yan may halaga and not just for a silly battle for 3rd place.

It think if NCAA doesnt want to trim down it's teams, they better think of another format. halos alam mo na rin naman ang kalalabasan ng tournament after the first round.

Championship experience clearly favors TNT while i believe Powerade enjoys the exuberance of youth and walang takot. Star-studded (over-priced?) ang TNT but maybe destiny will side with Powerade.

Everybody loves an underdog tsaka baka breath of fresh air naman na hindi parati nalang SMC or MVP teams ang nagwawagi.

The difference that i noticed sa RoS-Powerade game last night eh nasa mga mata at body language palang ng mga players. All game long you'll notice the confidence in the eyes and demeanor nina Gary David, Lassiter & Casio. Kramer, Anthony & Antonio played their roles to the hilt, sacrificing their bodies and giving up hard playoff fouls.

Over at RoS, umpisa palang wala ng fire except when Uyloan made those 2 nice assist passes. Maagang na-frustrate ang mga players. Hindi nai-saksak at nai-baon ng malalim sa mga utak at puso nila na never pang umabot ng Championship round ang Welcoat/ Rain or Shine franchise (ngayon palang sana) sa 6 years na pagsali nila sa PBA.

Its not as if Powerade is stronger than them. Powerade just seemed to want it more or maybe mas maganda lang ang motivation.
If it were me, i'd kick players who didn't seem to care, off my team.
