I wonder how teams seeing action in other tournaments like the D League and Fr Martin are going to survive the summer?

For that matter, how about teams that normally go overseas for a junket, este training pala?

Ateneo has no D League team but will likely also join the Fr Martin. As well they should as reigning summer tournament champions. How does their schedule look like?

San Beda might be in a more complicated predicament since they have D League commitments, same with Adamson and even UP, San Sebastian and Arellano.

Tigers out to give UST Flying V title

(The Philippine Star) Updated March 28, 2011

MANILA, Philippines - University of Santo Tomas is so serious of its UAAP campaign that it decided to join the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup for the very first time since 2006.

“We hope the pre-season games will help us in our preparation for the UAAP,” said UST coach Pido Jarencio in Filipino. “Of course, we want to come up with a good showing in line with UST’s celebration of its 400th year.”

With a talent-laden roster, the Tigers are actually capable of pulling the rug from under the favorites in the tournament firing off April 9 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Jeric Teng, Jeric Fortuna, Chris Camus, Clark Bautista, Melo Afuang and Aljon Mariano make up the core of this year’s squad made more formidable by the acquisition of UAAP juniors MVP Kevin Ferrer.

Add Cameroonian recruit Kareem Abdul, who has completed his residency requirements, the Tigers are once again ready to roar in the tournament presented by Mighty Bond Extreme Elastoseal in cooperation with Total, ABS-CBN and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

At the other end of the collegiate fence, Jose Rizal University is also out to prove itself after losing the core of its last year’s squad.

Gone are Marvin Hayes, JR Bulangis and John Montemayor, who have graduated and Cameroonians Nchotu Njei and Joe Etame, who were kicked out after violating team rules.

But second-year coach Vergel Meneses is left with a promising cast led by Raycon Kabigting, John Lopez and Nate Matute and a gutsy bunch of rookies in Philip Paniamogan, Romnick Marquez, Ronnel Carampil and Jay-Ar Gaco.

Stags, Warriors Upbeat

March 27, 2011, 1:25am MANILA BULLETIN

With the coaching changes San Sebastian College and University of the East had during the off-season, the Stags and the Red Warriors hope to do well in the Filoil Flying V tournament set to open April 9 at the Arena in San Juan.

While San Sebastian has brought in battle-tested former coach Arturo "Turo" Valenzona, UE will now be mentored by former stalwart Jerry Codiñera, a member of the famed Warriors that last won a UAAP title in 1984.

"Masaya ako na ako uli ang mag-cocoach sa San Sebastian. Ilang taon na din ‘yung nakaraan nung huli akong nandito kaya uunti-untiin namin," said Valenzona, 68, who guided the Stags to the NCAA championship from 1993 to 1996 and back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.

Valenzona replaced ex-pro Ato Agustin, who is now the head coach of San Miguel in the PBA.

The veteran bench tactician will handle an almost intact unit that placed second in the last NCAA after winning it in 2009. Leading the Stags are Calvin Abueva and Ronald Pascual with Anthony Del Rio, Ian Sangalang, Jon Semira, and Rey Gorospe.

As for UE, Codinera, also faces an equally difficult task of steering UE back in contention despite the departure of key players like James Martinez, Raffy Reyes, Kid Rosopa and hotshot Paul Lee, who opted to skip his final year.

"It will surely be difficult since it’s my first time to coach a college team but we’ll do our best to have a good run. We still have a lot of work to do but I do believe that with these players, we have the material to compete," said Codinera, who once coached Teletech in PBL in 2006.

wala si Roi Sumang because of knee injury he got from FMC Tournament, no idea if he can play this coming UAAP. I guess Rosopa is already out of the team, Ivan hernandez no sure if he still with the team. Maybe we will see some of our recruits and Team B players in our FMC Summer League lineup. Si Gene Belleza is also injured during the FMC tournament not sure if he can play on the off season

Wait and see na lang muna tayo mga Red Warriors fans, samahan na din natin ng dasal na wag naman tayo mag 7th or 8th place sa UAAP MBT

Varsity heavyweights kick off the action even as two Philippine youth teams also test their mettle in the FilOil-Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup starting this Saturday.

UAAP champion Ateneo unveils a promising batch of rookies led by Kiefer Ravena when the Blue Eagles clash with NCAA titlist San Beda in the 2 p.m. opener at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

La Salle and University of Santo Tomas tangle in the other seniors match at 4 p.m., while rivals Ateneo and De La Salle Zobel open the juniors competition at 6 p.m.

The national Under-13 and Under-16 squads mentored by Olsen Racela will also see action as guest squads in the tuneup basketball tournament featuring 17 schools.

“Expectations are high this year,” said FilOil-Flying V Sports chair Joey Guillermo in the PSA Forum yesterday at Shakey’s UN Avenue.

“A lot of teams have improved, there are changes in some coaching staff and a lot of recruits are expected to perk up the teams. We think it’s the most exciting year.”

Ateneo and San Beda are bracketed in Group A along with La Salle, San Sebastian, Arellano, National University, University of Santo Tomas and Lyceum.

Far Eastern University, another preseason favorite, mixes it up in Group B with Adamson, St. Benilde, Letran, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Jose Rizal University, Mapua, University of the East and University of the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines - De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas celebrate milestones in their school history, and to highlight their season, the Green Archers and the Growling Tigers will headline the opening of the 2011 Filoil Flying V Hanes Pre-Season Premier Cup on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Archers, who are celebrating their school’s 100th year, and the Tigers, representing the country’s oldest educational institution at 400 years, clash in the main offering at 4 p.m. in an explosive opening salvo.

Filoil Flying V Sports chairman Joey Guillermo said the opening game serve as a tribute to both schools.

“This is Filoil and Flying V’s tribute to De La Salle and UST for having these significant milestones in their history,” said Guillermo, who also noted that this is the first time that the Tigers will be joining the Filoil Flying V tournament, which is now on its fifth year.

The La Salle-UST clash will be preceded by another blockbuster of a match between two-time UAAP champion Ateneo and two-time NCAA titlist San Beda College at 2 p.m., right after an hour-long opening ceremony.

The Blue Eagles and the Red Lions play for bragging rights for their respective leagues even as they gear up for the coming regular season.

Yet another game to watch is a game between archrivals Ateneo Eaglets and De La Salle-Zobel in the lone junior match at 6 p.m. to cap the opening day for the tournament title-sponsored by Hanes and presented by Pioneer Mighty Bond Xtreme and Elastoseal with major sponsors Filoil, Flying V, Total Phils., TMS Ship Agencies and Molten, the official ball.

The seniors doubleheader on Saturday also showcases the much-awaited clash of this year’s celebrated rookies.

Tickets for the games are now available at SM at 470-2222 or at the Arena gate.

I now see Fr Martin Cup big bosses Joey Lim, Aric Del Rosario and of course Ato Badolato at Commissioners Row at the Fil Oil. Which means they must've come to terms with Fil Oil. I think this is the first truly positive concrete step in rationalizing summer league play, and I hope it continues.

New-look Bulldogs maul Tigers; Lions rebound

By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - The souped-up National University Bulldogs outlasted opening day winner University of Santo Tomas, 60-52, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Pre-Season Premier Cup at the Arena yesterday.

The Bulldogs, bannered mostly by new recruits and young guns, held the Tigers scoreless in the last 2:30 to join idle Ateneo atop Group A with 1-0.

The Tigers, also parading a souped-up crew, dropped to 1-1 in a tie with San Beda, which pulled off its first win at the expense of Arellano, 88-74.

“We’re still a work in progress,” said NU’s new coach Eric Altamirano. “But I like what I see they have great chemistry. Hopefully we can continue this as I know we’re in a tough bracket here.”

Bobby Ray Parks, NU’s prized recruit, showed a glimpse of what he can do for the school raring to rise out of the doghouse. The son of former PBA Best Import Bobby Sr. fired 17 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, one steal and three assists in 30 minutes.

“He’s still young and he’s still trying to learn the Filipino type of game. But one thing good about him is that he’s got a great attitude. We look up to him as one of the leaders of our team. Although he’s still young, there’s a responsibility on his shoulders,” Altamirano added.

Marion Magat and Denice Villamor backstopped Parks with 8 and 7, respectively, as NU survived the absence of Emmanuel Mbe, who’s on leave the entire month to attend to personal matters.

Cameroonian rookie Karim Abdul posted a double-double of 13 markers and 23 big rebounds for UST, which debuted last Saturday with a 79-70 win over La Salle.

Meanwhile, the Lions rebounded from their 87-90 setback to UAAP king Ateneo also last Saturday, beating Arellano, 88-74.

San Beda’s Ola Adeogun ably filled in for the injured Sudan Daniel, pumping in 21 markers and grabbing 16 rebounds as he joined hands with Rome dela Rosa and Garvo Lanete (15 points apiece) in beating an improved AU Chiefs and handing SBC its first win.

“Arellano improved a lot compared to last year, especially with their foreign guy,” San Beda coach Frankie Lim said, referring to Charles Mammie, who had six points, eight boards and six assists. “Good thing is, we have somebody to match up with him; Dave played great defense on him and finally my wing guys delivered.”

The Lions seized control by detonating a 9-0 bomb in the second period en route to a 40-32 lead that they stretched to as many as 18, at 81-63, on a drive by dela Rosa.

There was a tense moment when SBC’s Dave Semerad and AU’s Gerald Lapuz engaged in a shoving match, leading to their ejection from the game.

Kevin Alas fired 23 points as the Letran Knights tripped Emilio Aguinaldo College, 66-54, in the other seniors game.

Charles Mamie is proving to be quite limited as an import for Arellano. Although 6'7" and strongly built at a muscular 240 pounds, he has very limited moves and can't even catch. In yesterday's Fil Oil against Lasalle, he couldn't pivot or turn even against the one-on-one coverage of the leaner Lasalle bigs. It looks like he won't be that big a difference for the Chiefs after all come Season 87 of the NCAA.

Speaking of Ferdinand, San Sebastian survived a scare to outlast Lasalle 88-81 at the Fil Oil yesterday. Leading most of the way, San Sebastian looked headed for a stroll-through win. Calvin Abueva was being his usual beastly self both in play and of course in his usual antics, much to the very vocal consternation of a few vociferous Lasalle lady fans. Then Luigi Dela Paz went on a tear, scoring nine straight points to turn an eight-point halftime deficit into a two-point Lasalle lead early in the fourth period.

Ian Sangalang, Jonathan Semira and Ronald Pascual however stepped up to restore the lead to the Golden Stags. Sangalang had most of his 19 points in the critical juntures of the third and fourth periods when the Green Archers were rallying furiously behind Dela Paz. Some bad attempts by Jovet Mendoza, Maui Villanueva and LA Revilla effectively ground the Lasalle rallye to a halt. Mendoza had at least four awkward attempts under the basket with Sangalang all over him, while Villanueva inexplicably didn't issue any short passes to an open Dela Paz.

San Sebastian held steady enough at the free throw line for the final count. Abueva stopped scoring for most of the fourth period but did haul in plenty of crucial rebounds off both boards to preserve the victory.

Abueva led all scorers with 28 points to go with his 18 rebounds. Sangalang completely outplayed his former RP Youth teammates Mendoza and Norbert Torres with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Mendoza and Torres, when they were most needed against a team with a battle-tested frontline, combined for 12 points and nine rebounds. Dela Paz was the only Archer in double figures with 16 points.

I believe this is the third straight year that San Sebastian has defeated La Salle in the Fil Oil. The first two victories were like 18 to 20 point routs.

Tams, Bulldogs still on a Roll

MANILA— Far Eastern U and National U sustained their streaks yesterday to stay on top of their groups in the FilOil-Flying V Hanes Preseason Premiere Cup.

The Tamaraws leaned on another strong performance from sophomore Terrence Romeo to repulse Emilio Aguinaldo College, 67-51, while the Bulldogs found another hero in Glenn Khobuntin in a 77-70 win over a hard-fighting Lyceum squad.

Jose Rizal U survived a shootout with St. Benilde, winning 101-96 in overtime, behind 20 points from guard Alex Almario.

With Bobby Ray Parks opting to facilitate the offense, the 6-foot-2 Khobuntin, sidelined by sore eyes two weeks ago, took over the scoring chores, finishing with 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting.

The 6-foot-3 Parks finished with only nine points, eight below his average in the first three games, but dished out eight assists.

“We had a hard time because Lyceum was playing a small lineup,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano.
“We were a little passive on defense in the first half, but Khobuntin gave us the inside game we needed in the second half.”

The Bulldogs now occupies the solo lead in Group A after improving to 4-0.

Pipo Noundou continued his solid showing for FEU with 11 points and 10 rebounds, stepping up in the absence of big man Aldrech Ramos, who sprained his ankle in a win over Mapua.

“We want this team to have a killer instinct heading into the UAAP,” said FEU coach Bert Flores.

FEU is having their own run in the tourney c/o that Romeo-Noundou-Cawaling trio. RR has been quiet so far. Seems JR got his old fold back or is it just his another "pre-season show off" if I may say. ;D

Eagles Up, Bulldogs Down

MANILA—Ateneo stayed perfect even as San Sebastian snapped National University’s unbeaten run yesterday to wrest the solo lead in Group A of the FilOil-Flying V Hanes Preseason Premier Cup.

The UAAP champion Eagles crushed Arellano, 70-53, to raise their Group A record to 4-0 record while the Stags rallied down the stretch to tame the Bulldogs, 81-74, at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Ian Sangalang buried 20 points, 12 of them in the second half, grabbed 10 boards and blocked five shots to lead the Stags to their second win in three outings.

Bobby Ray Parks unloaded a game-high 34 points on top of eight rebounds and three assists but failed to stop the Bulldogs from falling to 4-1.

In Group B action, Alex Nuyles had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Adamson past Letran, 75-50, for a 3-1 record.

The Eagles played minus rookie center Greg Slaughter, who had a fever, but defended well.

“I think my guys played well defensively, especially the first half,” said coach Norman Black of the Eagles, who are set to leave for a 20-day US training, “That probably was one of the reasons why we won this game. We played well defensively throughout the entire game.”

Rookie Kiefer Ravena paced Ateneo with 12 points, three rebounds and four assists

Rey Parks and NU had a 12-point lead in the third quarter, 10 at the half, but lost by seven, with San Sebastian going up as much as 13 in the fourth. As noted by Adamson coach Leo Austria after the game, the Golden Stags went on a 21-0 nothing run and the Bulldogs just let them. Coach Turing Valenzona was the picture of perfect equanimity even when NU went on its own rally midway through the last quarter. In the end it came down to a veteran coach simply laying down his wealth of experience against a realtively young coach who relied too much on one player. Ian Sangalang had 20 points, 10 boards, 5 blocks and again completely outplayed the opposing frontline. Rey Parks however is the real deal. That an 18-year old can dump 34 against possibly the toughest and most rugged team in college ball is really saying something. In one play he broke Abueva's ankles, whirled around Sangalang and finished with a nifty lay-up. Too bad his coach relied too much on a barely 6-foot-3 Glen Khobuntin and a soft 6-foot-3 Kyle Neypes to try and match up against Sangalang and Abueva (18 points, 14 rebounds, three or four offensive rebounds in the last minute and a half).
