Gamefacers, we continue to receive a lot of requests to create a forum exclusively dedicated to "Intellectual Heckling." Some are insisting that heckling is an inevitable part of the "hardcore" side of hoops and the same should not be disallowed. We actually have some reservations at this point because the same might go out of hand but some members insist that the same could be controlled if (1) the rules are properly set from the start; (2) improved as we go on; and (3) the forum is strictly and consistently moderated.

At this point that we are not yet fully convinced to proceed with it, we would like to get your thoughts about the same before we make a decision.

Fire away pls......

While I agree that heckling is definitely an integral part of the hardcore hoops experience, I share the concerns about such a forum going out of hand.

First, what exactly is the forum supposed to accomplish? Is it a place for experienced hecklers to compare notes? As a heckler myself, I don't think I want to 1) divulge my techniques to people who might use them against my team, and 2) let people know what I'm planning to say ahead of time, as that would lessen the impact of such remarks.

On the other hand, is it a place for people to discuss heckling traditions? I think we have enough "usapang retro" going on in the forums for that.

Second, is it really a good idea to bring hecklers from different schools together for what is essentially alaskahan? We're all hardcore hoops fans here, and even though the forum is envisioned to be "intellectual," I would not be surprised if things degenerated quickly into bashing, personal conversations between posters or worst of all, long, rambling discussions on obscure points that are followed purely for the drama and not any intellectual value added.

I would like to hear from the proponents what these "rules" are going to be, and whether there will truly be a commitment to religiously follow them from the very beginning. Call me distrustful, but my years of moderating in this forum have taught me that despite the presence of rules or guidelines, people will happily push the envelope until a mod steps in to clean up the mess - and sometimes, they won't even stop when that happens.

Third, who exactly is going to "strictly and consistently" moderate said forum? Not me, that's for sure - I doubt if any of us school-specific mods would have the cachet to keep such a circus in order. In fact, we have enough trouble trying to maintain our own forum/s.

I would assume that the chosen one/s would have to be people like gameface_one, full battle gear or the others who moderate the more general purpose sections of the Gameface forum. Would the mod/s really have time to monitor all those forums when we all have real lives and jobs that also demand our time and attention? Call me lazy, but the extra work and aggravation does not seem worth it.
_________________________________________________I n view of the foregoing, I respectfully recommend that we shelve the proposal for now. As an alternative, there can be threads to discuss heckling in the school-specific forums (and I would be willing to start a new one in the BEN for this purpose). If the discussion is going to be as intellectual as the proponents believe, then it should be perfectly all right for hecklers from other schools to visit with each other and intelligently discuss the matter there. If I see that happen - and see it sustained over a reasonable period of time, e.g., six months inclusive of the UAAP/NCAA basketball seasons to one year - then I think we could consider the proposal again.

^I agree with 5FC. Pexers will invade Gameface. Also, I doubt if there is such an animal called "intellectual heckling" as opposed to "dumb heckling". What is "intellectual" to the heckler will be surely considered "dumb" by the other side. This will surely go out of control.

Maybe Sampaloc Kid can moderate this Forum...

Does it have to be in general? If not, then make it subjective to the school.

I do think that strict moderation would be the norm for this particular case.

That's an even bigger no.

Not practical: The school-specific mods don't need another board (or yet another one, in some cases) to monitor.

Not necessary: Once again, experience tells me that one thread on heckling in the BEN is more than enough to contain the volume of intellectual discussion on Ateneo heckling. Tsaka Ateneo heckling na yan, ha :P

Not beneficial: Gameface prides itself on maintaining some level of intelligent discourse in the forums. As LION pointed out, the proposal for a forum/forums on intellectual heckling will attract the type of person that will cause this level to go down.

Let's put it this way. A general heckler's forum would have the same value in gameface.ph as a "Viagra for Sale spam" forum. And would be just as hard to moderate.

Have to agree with the ones above me on this one. Also, a heckling forum will not be feasible for "containment". I fear that it will definitely spill over onto the more substantial portions of this forum, and ultimately cause the quality of the discussions to degenerate.

Gameface is what it is because of the way it has been shaped and moderated over the years. A heckler's forum will serve to dilute the brand and any spillover of the sort mentioned will only turn off the more level-headed posters we have around here.

The War Zone thread in PEX was created to at least moderate the existing trolls kase being PEX, it's a reality na. Dito naman sa Gameface walang trolls gaano kase well-moderated na.
