Based on the FMC sub-forum, DLSU has a game today. Usually schools mix those in Team A and B for this tournament. Who's in the lineup for the Green Archers?

The Green Archers played their opening game earlier today in the FMC Open Division Tournament at the Arellano Gym in Legarda, Manila. They were up against the Mapua Tech Cardinals led by Allan Mangahas, Jonathan Banal, and their Jordanian recruit Taha. The Cardinals were coached by Chito Victolero.

The players who suited in the game earlier were Oda Tampus, Almond Vosotros, Aiki Herrera, Yutien Andrada, Papot Paredes, Sam Marata, Nico Elorde, Norbert Torres, LA Revilla, Jed Manguera, Martin Reyes, and Dan Sara.

Coach Dindo started LA at point, Sam at the off-guard position, Yutien at the three, Norbert at the four, and Papot at the pivot.

La Salle started out hot converting on both inside and outside. Norbert took care of the inside while LA and Sam took care of the perimeter. Yutien helped out on the boards, boxing out Mapua's big men. Papot, on the other hand, went into foul trouble early in the game as he had defensive miscues guarding Taha and committed some useless fouls.

Mangahas and Banal unfortunately could not get their game early on and good thing their substitutes were able to provide the needed punch for Mapua to keep them in the ball game but the Archers proved to be gritty with their hustle and the Green Archers remained on top at the end of the opening quarter, 28-19.

In the 2nd quarter, Mapua outscored La Salle, 22-13 to tie the game at halftime, 41-41. The Archers seemed to be tired at that point committing defensive lapses as the Mapua wingmen broke loose hitting jumpers, connecting on inside incursions, and at a later point, dishing out drop passes to their big men inside. The Cardinals led by as much as three points in the quarter, 41-38. The Archers also missed on some coverages in their pressure defense, allowing the Cardinals to score on easy baskets.

As the Green Archer starters opened the 3rd canto, the Archers were able to set a six-point lead at 50-44. But as the Green Archers relaxed once again, Mapua took advantage and unleashed a 16-4 run to establish a six-point lead of their own, 60-54 under three minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. This time Mangahas, Banal, Taha, and another Mapua big man combined forces on this Mapua run in the 3rd period.

Dan Sara's lack of basketball action due to his injury showed as he had difficulty setting up the plays while getting pressured and bodied up by Banal and other Mapua guards. Coach Dindo decided bring back LA, and he combined with Oda for the finishing kick producing dividends as the Archers' patented pressure defense enabled La Salle to regain the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter at 68-60. The Green Archers never allowed the Cardinals to cross half court and Oda had a field day converting one lay-up after another.

In the 4th quarter, Mapua opened up with a 6-0 blast, cutting the Archers' lead to two, 68-66. But from then on, both teams traded baskets. Sam kept the Archers in the game with his wide array of perimeter jumpers and he even hit a difficult turnaround jumper from the free throw line giving the Archers a 80-76 lead. Norbert fouled out of the game with under four minutes to go. Good thing Papot stepped up defensively in the shaded lane along with Yutien to protect the paint from Mapua's big men.

With the Archers leading at 82-78 and with 24 seconds left, Oda dished out a good pass to Sam (who is wide open at the moment) who converted on a back-breaking triple to settle the game and enabling the Archers to notch their opening win in the tournament. Mapua was on a 1-2-2 zone defense and Sam was just lurking at the elbow waiting for the right pass to convert the three-ball attempt.

The next game for the Archers is on next week Saturday against Informatics. If I am not mistaken, the venue will still be in the Arellano Gym in Legarda. Time to be determined.

Just a side note, in the opening game, our women's basketball team beat Fatima University Phoenix to the tune of 91-34.

The Green Archers survived a couple of tip in misses by Informatics in the last seconds to prevail 72-70 at the San Beda gym this morning. Coach Dindo continues to experiment as he used several different combinations. The Archers had a hard time breaking the game wide open as Informatics proved to be so pesky as they stayed with the Archers all throughout. A different set of Archers suited up for this game as guys like Aiki Herrera and Martin Reyes were given ample playing time. Team B players Brian Organ, JR Gallarza and Maoi Marcelino also suited up today while Sam Marata and Yutien Andrada were rested. LA Revilla and Almond Vosotros shared quarter backing duties while Norbert Torres and Papot Paredes manned the shaded lane.

University of the East hung on for the 54 - 52 victory over Lasalle last Saturday at the Arellano gym in Manila.

First half action was just plain terrible basketball as both teams went on a nearly six minute drought with the score pegged at 14-12 from midway through the first period and early into the second period.

Pointguard Roy Sumang finally broke that silence with a jumper in the lane to knot the count at 14-all. Halftime saw the Red Warriors take a 24-22 lead into the lemon time break.

Swingman Biboy Enguio and guard Reb Belleza conspired in a 10-2 run that gave UE the 38-30 lead late in the third period.

Lasalle stormed back early in the fourth period with a 8-0 run of their own behind pointguard LA Revilla, guard Jarelan Tampus, forward Maui Villanueva and center Norbert Torres. The Green Archers took the lead back at 42-40.

Sumang, Belleza, guard Paul Zamar and forward Adrian Santos however put together a counter-run to close out the game. Zamar nailed two pressure freethrows with 12 seconds left for the final count.

Enguio and Sumang led UE with only eight points each. Torres and Tampus each had 13 for Lasalle.

I am certain that Ponso will be donning the Green and White uniform of La Salle. His uncle told me that it's a done deal and many high school basketball standouts are just waiting to pass La Salle's College Entrance Test.

^ On Ponso. As of last night, even Brother Oca himself was not certain.
I agree though that DLSU has an excellent chance of getting him.
