It should be good to see some of the reportedly top-notch recruits seeing action for a lot of the top schools. Guys like the Jordanian Taha of Mapua, swingman JP Taha of St Benilde, Brian Organ of Lasalle, the African Henry of UE, and many others.

We hope to see a lot of you at all the games.

University of the East hung on for the 54 - 52 victory over Lasalle last Saturday at the Arellano gym in Manila.

First half action was just plain terrible basketball as both teams went on a nearly six minute drought with the score pegged at 14-12 from midway through the first period and early into the second period.

Pointguard Roy Sumang finally broke that silence with a jumper in the lane to knot the count at 14-all. Halftime saw the Red Warriors take a 24-22 lead into the lemon time break.

Swingman Biboy Enguio and guard Reb Belleza conspired in a 10-2 run that gave UE the 38-30 lead late in the third period.

Lasalle stormed back early in the fourth period with a 8-0 run of their own behind pointguard LA Revilla, guard Jarelan Tampus, forward Maui Villanueva and center Norbert Torres. The Green Archers took the lead back at 42-40.

Sumang, Belleza, guard Paul Zamar and forward Adrian Santos however put together a counter-run to close out the game. Zamar nailed two pressure freethrows with 12 seconds left for the final count.

Enguio and Sumang led UE with only eight points each. Torres and Tampus each had 13 for Lasalle.

We feel the pain of Coach Vic Ycasiano of STI and NU.

Yesterday was just not Coach Vic's day, as all four of his Teams - STI A and B and NU A and B - all lost in the ongoing Fr Martin Cup Open. Both of his STI squads were ripped new ones by Letran and San Beda. Then both NU teams were outplayed by Informatics and then JRU.

Oh well, that can only mean the law of averages should even out sooner rather than later.

JRU-San Beda in Fr Martin Finals

Arellano Gym Manila - NCAA stalwarts Jose Rizal and San Beda bested separate foes to arrange a winner-take-all championship in the ongoing Fr Martin Cup Open Division yesterday afternoon.

JRU leaned on the clutch shooting of Nate Matute and steady play-making of Alex Almario in the payoff fourth period to eke out a tough win over NU 71-69. JRU played sans their two African imports, Etame Joe and Nchotu Njei, who were at the venue in street clothes.

NU looked headed for the win as they controlled the first half behind the duo of former RP Youth standouts Joseph Terso, Rey Parks and Emmanuel Mbe. But Jon Lopez, Jecster Apinan, Matute and Almario put on several short but heated runs in the second half to turn things in JRU's favor.

Matute and Almario led JRU with 13 points each and combined for six steals.

Parks had a game-high 19 points but went 0-6 on treys in the second half.

Reigning NCAA champion San Beda had some moments of anxiety but eventually prevailed over a shorter Adamson squad 80-72, thanks to the power plays of new African import Olaide Adeogan and the hot shooting of Anthony Semerad.

Adamson hung tough behind speedy guards Jeric Canada and Lester Alvarez but just could not match up against the size and depth of San Beda.

Semerad led all scorers with 16 points while Olaide added 15 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks.

Canada had 13 points for Adamson.

Finals are set for Sunday 20 March at Arellano Gym in Manila. 9:00 AM for the women, 11:00 AM for the men.

San Beda Wins Second Straight Fr Martin Title

Arellano Gym, Manila - Reigning NCAA champion San Beda survived dangerous Jose Rizal University to claim the Fr Martin Cup Open Division championship pulling away 76 - 62.

Probably expecting a cake walk against a much smaller JRU side, the Red Lions weren't really pouring it on throughout the first half. New African import Olaida Adeogun and Anthony Semerad, top performers during their semifinal rout of Adamson, proved listless. Olaida even knocked off a sure basket by Jake Pascual on a trail job.

Guards Alex Almario and Nate Matute were keeping the Bombers in the fight with pin-point outside shooting. But JRU was a woeful 6-22 in the first hlaf on freethrows, a gaping deficit that could have easily turned the tide in their favor.

In the third period, the Bombers seemed to have gotten into even more trouble, losing forwards Jon Lopez and Ralph Monserrat after the two left the bench during an on-court altercation early in the period. Sent to the dugout, the already undersized Bombers got even smaller.

This however also served as a spark as Jecster Apinan instigated a rallye that brought JRU within 53-55 late in the third period. San Beda was getting lazy on their transition defense, allowing the JRU perimeter to leak out and finish on the break.

But Mar Villahermosa nailed a trey, followed by a Garvo Lanete jumper both from the right corner to give San Beda back some breathing room at 53-70. That was about as good as it would get for the Bombers, as American import and reigning NCAA MVP Sudan Daniel imposed himself inside, getting six second-half blocks.

Seldom-used Boy Koga nailed a trey from the left corner to ice the game for the Red Lions.

Daniel led San Beda with 14 points and 10 blocks, while Lanete had 13 markers.

Chris Mendoza, a new recruit, led all scoers with 15 poibnts, while Matute chipped in 13.
