View Full Version : Mapua Cardinals on to Season 87: Off-season + Recruits

Now that the 86th season of the NCAA has ended, let's look forward to next year's college season. In this thread, let's talk about the off-season leagues wherein they compete (FMC, NIKE SUMMER LEAGUE, FILOIL). Recruits will also be discussed. But before that, let's assess our team's performance in Season 86.

SEASON 86 STAT SHEET OF THE MAPUA CARDINALS

PLAYER STATS

GAME RESULTS

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk43/villaminmies/GAMERESULTS.jpg

Three players namely Macky Acosta, TG Guillermo, and Erwin Cornejo have played their final season for the team. These three combine for 28 points in every game, almost half of the team's total scoring output. Average rebounds of the three combined is 11 which is roughly 25% of the total rebounding output of the team.

Key returnees for the Cardinals next year are Jonathan Banal, Mark Sarangay, Allan Mangahas, Jason Pascual, Mike Parala, Ellison Maniego, Rodel Ranises, and Andretti Stevens (ACL injury, a bit doubtful of his stint next year). Rookies Raphael Layug, Kenneth Ighalo, and Raymark Cabrera will also be returning next year. Narr Garay, one of the 4 rookies is out of the team.

Cheers!

There are 2 Visayan forwards in our Team B, both stands 6'4. One is like a poor man's version of Hugnatan and the other is an athletic role player. Hopefully, the other two Visayan shooters play next year. They could've cracked in our lineup this season if not for their leg injuries. Also, a 6'2 forward of Visayan roots will also play next year, i heard that he's the replacement of Erwin Cornejo. He's bulkier and much more athletic than Cornejo and has above average shooting. Puro Bisaya no? hekhek

Of course there is Yousef Taha, a 6'7 Power Forward and a 6'3 point forward from the States.

I believe there are 4-5 slots available... Di ko lang alam kung paano isisiksik ni Coach Chito itong mga batang ito sa team niya. For sure may ma-relegate sa team B.

No. The one you're referring to is Nico Nocos right? I'm not that sure if he can get to Team A. The ones i've posted were the most impressive in the FMC and in their practices.

Darrel Magsigay, 6'2 PG/SG

Yes, he had a decent game against EAC-B in the FMC. He has some decent outside shooting and slashing. Well built for an off-guard but a bit off in ball handling. Do you happen to know him personally?

Good to know he chose MIT ;) I am guessing its JRU?

Yousef Taha is set to become MIT's next great big man. In previous threads, Gameface vets have been calling him a Rabeh-lite, a young Al-Husseini. I say no, cause i've seen Rabeh play as a baby dolphin and as a young Blue Eagle. At that level (lower classman in college), Taha is already better. He is more mobile, a better rebounder, can shoot from outside, blocks shots, and make quick passes in traffic underneath. At the same age, Al-Husseini was still very much a project under contruction. For Mapua, the NCAA and Philppine basketball in general, I hope he develops further and maximize his potential.

Blue Eagles see off Taha, Cardinals
by inboundpass
Monday, 6 June 2011

ATENEO de Manila University rained on the birthday party of Mapúa Institute of Technology Cardinal Yousef Taha, winning 63-56 to advance to the Final Four of the 2011 FilOil Flying V Pre-Season Premiere Cup last June 6 at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

Ateneo, the second seed in Group A with a 5-2 record, shook off a stagnant first half to eliminate the third seeded team from Group B. Prior to this encounter, neither of the two teams had reached the semifinals of this tournament, a stretch that is now broken for Ateneo.

Banking on their dominant rookie tandem, the Blue Eagles got 13 points each from Greg Slaughter and Kiefer Ravena, with Slaughter adding five boards, four dimes and a block. Ravena also chipped in four more rebounds and an assist, while veterans Kirk Long and Nico Salva combined for 23 points. Rookie Gwyne Capacio sat out his second straight game because of a knee injury.

The two sides fought to a 24-all draw after 20 minutes of play. But at halftime, Ateneo coach Norman Black pleaded for more ball movement, and the result was immediately noticeable as the defending UAAP champions leaped out to an 8-3 mini-run and forge ahead, 32-27. By the end of the third, the Eagles had nearly doubled their first half output, scoring 21, to take a 45-39 lead into the last quarter.

Baskets by Kenneth Ighalo and Jonathan Banal cut the lead to just a deuce, 45-43, early in the fourth, before six points from second-string center Justin Chua and a triple by Long restored the lead to six, 58-52.

Down the stretch, Ateneo left the door open for Mapua to make a comeback after splits at the line from Long and Salva. Taha then nailed an undergoal stab that cut the Ateneo lead to four, 60-56 with 48 seconds left. A strong drive down a wide open lane by Salva hiked the lead to 62-56 and Mapúa couldn’t get anything on the ensuing possession despite calling for time. A charity by Kiefer Ravena then closed out the game, as Josan Nimes missed a chance to whittle down the final deficit in the dying seconds of the game.

Taha was a one-man team for Mapúa, with a monstrous double-double performance of 24 points and 22 rebounds. No other Cardinal scored in double-digits. Jason Pascual and Allan Mangahas added nine points each, on a combined 7-of-26 shooting from the field.

The win forges a potential 2010 UAAP Finals rematch with Ateneo facing Far Eastern University, victors over De La Salle University in a later game, on Friday, June 10.

“We’re really used to the floor being open, but this year, our floor is blocked again [because of the presence of Greg Slaughter]. Sometimes the ball movement becomes stagnant,” said Ateneo head coach Norman Black, addressing an area of concern for his team. “If he [Slaughter] had joined us in January, we would have been past this [by now].”

The architect of Ateneo’s three-peat attributed the Blue Eagles’ sloppy first half to fatigue, citing a tough schedule that had them playing four games in the last five days due to scheduling issues with the parallel Fr. Martin Summer Cup. Incidentally, the Blue and White swept their elimination round group with a perfect 9-0 mark and are due to face National University in the semifinals of that tiff this Saturday, June 11.

Mapúa got 17 second chance points on 17 offensive rebounds to just eight in both categories by Ateneo. The Blue Eagles, however, were able to finish with 16 fastbreak points while holding the Cardinals to only four. W5

Mapúa got 17 second chance points on 17 offensive rebounds to just eight in both categories by Ateneo. The Blue Eagles, however, were able to finish with 16 fastbreak points while holding the Cardinals to only four. W5

This is a painful experience but an avoidable one for MIT. Mapua almost ambushed Ateneo in the PCCL last year, IIRC, but failed because they blew a big double digit lead lead they made with poor decision making and shot selection down the stretch.

Combined stats more often than not mask even more adverse situations. How much of those 19 combined misses came from Jason Pascual? I have never been a fan of Jason's game. He jacks up too many ill-advised three-pointers or long twos in spite of his being 6'5" or thereabouts. Credit the Cards for hauling down those 17 offensive rebounds because Jason is always outside hoisting those shots, and missing much of them. How many times in the past had MIT racked up a big lead only to see it vanish in a flash, all because MIT's bigs hoist jumpers instead of working down low.

Fr Martin Cup semis this Saturday 11 June 2011 at San Beda Gym in Mendiola, Manila

Juniors Final 4 starting at 9:00 AM.

Seniors Final 4 starts at 12:00 NN. Ateneo and NU I think will be the second seniors Final 4 game. Mapua is waiting for its Final 4 opponent. So it could be a reprise of the 2010 summer tournament finale between Ateneo and Mapua.

NU Wins 2nd FMC Title

National University leaned on the steadiness of rookies Rey Parks and Dennis Villamor to hack out the 87 - 83 victory over Mapua Tech in overtime to claim their second Fr Martin Cup title.

In a game that never saw a double-digit lead on either side, the Cardinals looked headed for their first ever Fr Martin Cup diadem. Both sides played in spurts with neither side taking mroe than a six- or seven-point lead. NU went up early behind Parks but Mapua responded behind Rodel Ranises and Andretti Stevens. Jason Pascual and Mike Parala then took their turn in the second period, but NU stayed in with Choy Ignacio and Mar Magat getting some opportunistic baskets. NU took the 40-39 lead into the lemon time break.

It was more of the same in the second half, but this time Harlem Nimes stepped up for Mapua, as the wily swingman played the point and capitalized on mismatches against the shorter NU sentinels. Veteran Allan Mangahas and Ken Ighalo also stepped up. Mangahas provided steadiness in controlling the tempo while Ighalo got plenty of hustle points and rebounds against the bigger NU forwards. Back-to-back treys by Nimes gave Mapua the 73-67 lead with some two minutes left.

Still up by four points in the last minute and a half in regular time, the Mapua gallery was already whooping it up and exchanging high fives. But a Villamor trey silenced the crowd while a split knotted the count at 77-all to end regulation. Pascual muffed a last-second shot as he collapsed from cramps at the east baseline.

Mapua still gained a last bit of control at 83-80 in the opening minutes of overtime, but that would be as good as it got. Villamor and Parks made up for some ensuing miscues by sticking the last freethrows of NU for the final count. "We just kept playing, even when we were down and not a lot of time left, we kept playing," said Coach Eric Altamirano after the game.

Parks led all scorers with 30 points while Villamor added 19 with four treys.

Ranises and Niimes had 19 each for the Cardinals.
