Far Eastern University (FEU)-FERN rediscovered its winning form yesterday by downing National University (NU), 60-51, to take a share of third place in the 73rd UAAP juniors basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena.

Employing a menacing 3-2 halfcourt trapping defense throughout the contest, the Baby Tamaraws stymied the Bullpups’ vaunted running game to offset a woeful 1-of-21 shooting from three-point land and move up at 3-3 in a three-way logjam with Adamson University and De La Salle Zobel.

NU dropped to 4-2, the same win-loss mark carried by the University of Santo Tomas (UST), which trounced Adamson, 83-71, in the second game.

The Baby Tamaraws also capitalized on the Bullpups’ defensive miscues underneath as Austin Fabian, Adiel Dimdam and Mark Tanoy repeatedly slashed the middle, padding a 27-26 halftime lead to 43-35 going into the final quarter.

In that pivotal stretch, NU limited its offense on Roque Estoce, who could only buy a solitary field goal despite a 4-of-6 clip from the stripe. A Ralph Tansingco trey after an Estoce split put the Bullpups within 32-34 before the Baby Tamaraws knocked in four consecutive free throws plus a Tanoy jumper to erect a 40-34 buffer.

Slowly NU regained its bearing midway in the final period as Estoce’s three-point play and lay-up sandwiched a pair of Raphael Atangan freebies to cut the deficit, 45-49, with 4:50 left in the clock.

Two Estoce gift shots to cap a 6-0 blitz with 1:40 remaining pushed NU closer at 51-53. But a pair of free throws and a lay-up by Lou Pearson with 27.2 seconds left virtually sealed the deal for the Baby Tamaraws as the Bullpups resorted to shooting blanks from afar.

Fabian and Immanuel Custodio each tallied 12 markers to lead the Baby Tamaraws, who collected 19 turnover points despite a 35-43 rebounding shortfall.

Kevin Lara paced NU with 19 points while Estoce added 12.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) rode on main man Kevin Ferrer’s hot fourth-quarter sniping to post a cold-blooded 71-55 annihilation of Far Eastern University (FEU)-FERN on Saturday and remain within an earshot of gaining the no. 2 spot in the 73rd UAAP juniors basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena.

Ferrer bucked a scoreless second quarter by firing 10 of his 15 points midway through the pay-off period where the Tiger Cubs capped a decisive 17-5 tear bridging the last two quarters to grab a commanding 54-41 lead with 8:24 left in the fourth which UST never relinquished until the final horn.

Despite playing off the bench for the first time, the 6-foot-4 Ferrer also tallied 13 rebounds, 6 blocks, 3 assists, ands a steal to highlight another all-around double-double performance from the league’s top MVP contender.

Like Ferrer, teammate EJ Corre dished out another brilliant effort, finishing with 16 points, six each coming in the first and fourth quarters, plus 7 assists, 6 rebounds and an assist for UST, which now holds a 7-3 record to tie De La Salle Zobel at third place.

The Tiger Cubs actually started out flat, trailing by 0-9 with AA Fabian scoring all of FEU’s points in that particular stretch to open the first quarter.

But UST slowly clawed its way back, pulling within 13-17 late in the second canto before unloading an 8-0 blitz laced by a Jaypee Sarcia triple to give the Tiger Cubs a 25-15 cushion at the half.

The Baby Tamaraws however closed in at 29-30 halfway through the third with six straight points from forward Immanuel Custodio. But UST separated at the turn once more, 43-36, via a 13-7 counter-attack on baskets by Corre and Ronino Mison with 1:34 remaining.

Two freethrows and a lay-up by Fabian cut the deficit to four before Sarcia drilled in a triple for a 46-40 UST spread entering the final frame.

Ferrer knocked in a trey of his own to sustain UST’s early fourth-quarter breakaway before FEU began closing in at 54-44 on a Mark Tanoy three-pointer with still 7:22 left.

UST virtually wrapped up the contest with a 9-2 endgame run anchored on a Ferrer triple and a pair of gift shots to build its biggest lead at 69-48 heading into the last two minutes.

Sarcia and Bryan Ilarde also turned in double-digit outputs for UST with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Ilarde also had 11 rebounds.

Fabian tossed in 18 points while Custodio added 17 to lead FEU, which visibly lost the rebounding battle against the taller Tiger Cubs, 46-26.
