I lwould like to thank San Miguel for his report on the forthcoming 5th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup, which opens on Saturday, November 28, still at a venue to be announced by the 20th this month. From the day of the meeting, a lot have transpired.....a lot of changes.
First and foremost, it is NCAA junior winning coach,Mr. Ato Badolato running the league, as he is the President. UAAP senior four-peat winning coach, Mr. Aric del Rosario is the Commissioner, and his son, Lester is his deputy. Mr. Joey Lim is the Secretary General, while, Mr. Kurt de Guzman is the league's Treasurer. Mr. Joey Villar of the Philippine Star is the league's Press Secretary.
As of today, 3pm, the team participants have been trimmed to twenty from 22 teams, as PMMS College and La Consolacion College-Manila have begged-off from the tournament, the former was not allowed to participate while they are also playing in the NCRAA. The latter has only eight active players in the roster, as majority have graduated.
And also, while doing the groupings during the meeting last Wednesday, we overlooked we grouped together all three computer schools, namely; STI College, Informatics Philippines and AMA Computer University. So we had to move STI College to Group B and Centro Escolar University to Group A.
Herewith is the official and final groupings.

GROUP A GROUP B

AMA Computer University Adamson University
Arellano University Team B Arellano University Team A
Centro Escolar University *College of St. Benilde
Colegio de San Juan de Letran Far Eastern University

Fr Martin Action was typically hot on a warm December day yesterday at the La Consolacion gym in Manila. Unfortunately it was a very bad day for NAASCU teams.

NCAA newcomer Arellano came back from a listless first half to down NAASCU power STI College 75-61 for their third straight victory. STI played very solid on-ball defense in the first half only to succumb to the dreaded press of Arellano in the second half.

Miggy Maniego and Mike Silungan led a balanced attack for State University as the Fighting Maroons beat up Informatics 77-57. It was no contest right from the get-go as UP moved the ball way to good for the sluggish Informatics halfcourt defense. A few more transition baskets put the game away for the Maroons. Maniego had 13 points to lead all scorers while Silungan added 11.

NCAA champion San Sebastian leaned on their two super rookies - Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang - to rip Centro Escolar 90-69. It was the second straight blowout victory for the mighty Golden Stags. CEU was never really in this game as the veteran Stags didn't let the Pink Scorpions put up a fight. Abueva had 23 points and nine boards while Sangalang added 22 with 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Adamson took home their first victory of this tournament as they out-steadied Fatima University 77-66. 6'6" African import Austin Manara pretty much had his way with the much smaller Phoenix frontline to lead the Falcons with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

It was an all-NCAA day last Sunday at the FEU Gym in Manila for the ongoing Fr Martin Cup.

Raycon Kabigting had the hottest hand all day as he went 7-10 from trey range to lead Jose Rizal past Mapua B 79-62. The Heavy Bombers were all over the B Cardinals in this one. Kabigting finished with a day-high 23 points while Nchotu Njei added 17, for JRU's first victory in two starts.

Powerhouse San Beda walloped Pereptual Help 73-53 for their second straight victory. Opening up the game at 10-0, the boys from Mendiola cruised all the way to the W. Jake Pascual led the Red Lions with 13 points.

Mapua A made up for the earlier loss of their B Team to JRU by smacking down Arellano B 76-49. The A Cardinals were so dominant they limited the normally prolific B Chiefs to only six points in the first period while opening up the scoring parade on transition and in the lane.

Almost-an-NCAA guest team Lyceum had a rousing start to their FMC campaign by beating Emilio Aguinaldo 63-53. It was EAC's second straight loss. Flor Guevarra led the Pirates with 14 markers.

In deference to the Christmas season, FMC Secretary General Joey Lim has declared that all December 20 games have been postponed and shall be reset for a later date.

Kahit Pasko nagtrabaho Secretary-General for the sake of the on-going 5th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup.
He received word that Coach Louie Alas will come back to Manila from his coaching stint with the ABL Philippine
team, the night before his January 10 game against Informatics. So he requested if his game could be moved from
the original 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, with the approval of Coach Budds Reyes of Informatics.
The Sed-Gen called-up Coach Reyes to inform of the request of Coach Alas. As a show of sportsmanship and
its reason is of national interest, Coach Reyes granted the request.
Herewith is the new revised schedule for Sunday, January 10, 2010, at the F.E.U. gymnasium.

10:00 am - F.E.U. vs. STI College Grp.B

Bombers down Falcons
by People's Tonight
Tuesday, 12 January 2010

JOSE Rizal University rode on the buzzer-beating shot by John Nchotu Njei to escape with a thrilling 51-49 win over Adamson University in the 5th Fr. Martin Cup Open basketball tournament at the FEU gym in Morayta, Manila.

Njei, a 6-0 recruit from Cameroon, hauled down the rebound after a miss by a teammate and then hit a short but difficult jumper from the left side against two Adamson defenders to clinch the win.

The win -- the second in three matches -- enabled the Vergel Meneses-mentored Heavy Bombers to vault into third place in Group B behind NCAA runner-up San Beda and Arellano University.

“The players are still adjusting to our new system, but they are doing very well right now,” said Meneses, who was appointed to handle the team only two months ago.

“I’m satisfied with the way they are playing, although there are still rooms for improvement,” added Meneses, known as the “Aerial Voyager” during his PBA days.

Actually, Njei’s heroics came after Adamson’s 6-6 African recruit Austin Manyara tied the score for the last time at 49-all with 15 seconds left.

Decoy Lopez scattered 18 points for the Mandaluyong-based team, followed by Njei with 13, and Raycon Kabigting with 10.

Marvin Hayes, Adoe Salazar, Ildefonso Bulangis Jr. and John Allen Montemayor also played well for the Heavy Bombers, whose coaching staff also include Ricky Alcantara, Vic Escudero, Jun Chiongco and Nat Gregorio.

Other notable personalities in the Heavy Bombers’ fold are businessman-sportsman Alex Wang, team manager; Derrick Pumaren, team consultant; and Dan Rose, conditioning coach/trainer .

Manyara finished with 12 points for the Falcons.

In other games, NCAA champion San Sebastian College demolished AMA Computer University, 72-50; Letran College edged Informatics, 74-72; Mapua crushed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 81-56, University of Perpetual Help downed Arellano University, 71-68; University of the Philippines defeated Centro Escolar University, 76-56, and Lyceum of the Philippines University outplayed Arellano-B, 64-60.

The tournament is being organized by Aric Del Rosario, Joey Lim and Edmundo “Ato” Badolato.

JRU edged FEU right in the Tamaraws' homecourt 69-67 last Sunday in ongoing FMC Open action. Veteran Marvin Hayes made a difficult followup off a muffed layup to beat FEU.

AMA nipped Informatics 79-76 in the battle of IT schools. Both schools went on a shootout in the last minute and a half, but the Titans showed more poise from the freethrow line to seal the win.

UP smacked down on Arellano B 97-67 with newcomer Carlo Gomez leading the way with 21 points. This game was so lopsided that star Mike Silungan sat early and just cheered from the bench.

San Beda played just well enough to beat fellow NCAA school St Benilde 75-62. Garvo Lanete and newcomer JP Mendoza each had 11 points for the Red Lions.

Last Saturday was particularly muggy at the Lyceum Gym, but the action was even hotter.

In the featured game, Adamson showed lots of end-game poise and a determined defensive stance in the second half to upend Arellano 60-57.

Down by as much as 15 late in the first period, the Falcons came back behind King Importante, Lucio Margallo, Lester Alvarez and Jeric Canada. They tightened up on defense in the second half and started getting out on their own transition game. With African import Austin Manara tending the inside, the Falcons found the fuel for their fastbreak.

Arellano was having its way thanks to their patented run-and-gun offense, as Adrian Celada, Ice Ciriacruz, Ed Rivera and Ian Virtudazo busted out on transition practically at will.

Canada had 11 points in a well-spread offense for Adamson, while Virtudazo led all scorers with 14 markers.

FIRST, it was John Nchotu Njei.
Now, it’s the turn of Marvin Hayes to shine for the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.
Hayes scored on a putback as time expired to lead the Heavy Bombers to another heartstopping 69-67 overtime win over powerhouse Far Eastern University in the fifth Fr. Martin Cup Open basketball tournament at the FEU gym in Morayta, Manila.
Hayes, who finished with 15 points, came out of nowhere to tip in the marginal basket from the right side against a phalanx of FEU defenders.
Hayes’ heroic came after the Tamaraws rallied from a five-point deficit in overtime to tie the score at 69-all with 24 seconds left.
“We’re doing well. The players are responding to our game plans to the letter,” said newly-appointed JRU head coach Vergel Meneses.
“It’s a learning process, but the players are all willing to adjust to our system,” added Meneses, who is being assisted on the bench by Ricky Alcantara, Vic Escudero, Jun Chiongco and Nat Gregorio.
It was the third straight win for the Heavy Bombers after losing to University of Perpetual Help, 53-60, in their opening game in this 10-team Group B division.
Last week, Njei, a 6-0 recruit from Cameroon, hit a buzzer-beating shot to give the Heavy Bombers a 61-59 win over Adamson University.
Five other players -- Njei, Reycon Kabigting, Decoy Lopez, Ildefonso Bulangis Jr. and Allen Montemayor -- also contributed in the scoring parade for the Mandaluyong-based squad also supported by JRU athletic director Paul Supan and team manager Alex Wang.
Njei added 13 points, Kabigting and Lopez had 12 points each and Bulangis and Montemayor contributed 10 points apiece.
Next in line for the Heavy Bombers is undefeated Arellano University-Team A at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
In the other game, Lyceum of the Philippine University crushed Centro Escolar University, 75-65, in Group A.
Handled by coach Bonnie Tan, the Intramuros based Pirates relied on Joseph Abaya, Rich Guevara, Andrei Mendoza and Fritz Gerald Ong to claim their third win in as many outings.

^ Another close win for Adamson, another close loss by FEU. Adamson survived an ugly, beat-down game against FEU to escape with the 54-52 victory in ongoing FMC Open action at the Arellano Gym in Legarda.

FEU could not put its superior size and athleticism against Adamson. Alex Nuyles and Jeric Canada were simply carving up the FEU defense with their speed and athleticism. In the highly-anticipated match-up of the two African imports, Pipo Nuondoo had the better stats but Austin Manara came away with the more important W. Canada gave the Falcons their first double-digit lead at 30-19 early in the third period with a hyper-speed slash to the rack.

FEU fought back behind the strength inside of Reil Cervantes and the perimeter genius of RR Garcia. Paul Sanga however was not finding his range, and outside of Garcia, no other FEU pointguard was getting the job done. Their pick-and-roll offense however was not materializing in the high triangle offense and Garcia had to bail them out with one-on-one plays.

In the end-game, Canada scored on a difficult layup off a high pick-and-roll while Cervantes botched two freethrows with only three seconds left to seal the Adamson victory.

Garcia had more than half the FEU output with a game-high 27 points but got little to no help from his guys, while Nuyles had 18 for the Falcons.

Can he still play in the NCAA? I recall seeing him play in a Liga Pilipinas conference after the 2008 NCAA season.

Thanks to the FMC Organizers for this capsule report - - -

San Beda downed Mapua B, 78-58, and Mapua A trounced University of the Philippines, 70-54, to remain unscathed in the 5th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup at the Far Eastern U Gym.

The win sent the Lions roaring to the solo lead in Group B with a 4-0 (win-loss) slate while the Cardinals jumped into a two-way tie with the San Sebastian Stags at the helm on 4-0 cards in Group A.

Perpetual Help slammed St. Benilde, 68-61, and Jose Rizal edged Arellano A, 70-69, to likewise boost their stocks in this event backed by Molten and organized by Ato Badolato, Joey Lim and Kurt de Guzman with Aric and Lester del Rosario as commissioners.

Fatima had the upset of the day over St Benilde.

St Benilde looked set to have a cake walk over the 6th placer in the recently concluded NAASCU tournament. Veterans Gelo Montecastro and Mac Abolucion led a flurry of transition opportunities for the Blazers right in the opening period. But the Phoenix fought back behind forward Randy Basco, center Ralph Monserat and guards Dexter Rosales and Robin Zapanta.

The Blazers of head coach Richard Del Rosario however were still pretty much in control throughout most of the first half, with Robbie Manalac and Jan Tan imposing themselves in the lane. Swingmen Mark De Guzman and Carlo Lastimosa were also getting their licks in on the slash and finding the big men for dump passes along the baseline.

Zapanta however went on a tear from three-point range as the Phoenix of head coach and ABL mainstay Rency Bajar took the lead at 30-29 late in the second period. Fatima nevber really looked back from that point as the Blazers seemed to lose their bearings.

In the crucial third period, Zapanta and the rest of the Phoenix kept pouring it on, as Fatima built its biggest lead at 54-43, prompting Del Rosario to sue for time. St Benilde was getting some good looks through great ball movement coming from Abolucion and Montecastro, but they just were not converting, missing a couple of gimme layups and short stabs.

Fatima meanwhile was getting some lucky breaks as Darryl Basa, Jon Cunanan, Mark Aque and Lester Panes got in on the act. Basco was also outworking the bigger Benilde big men off both boards with superior positioning and extension to gather in the caroms.

De Guzman and Abolucion tried to bring Benilde back into it and brought the Blazers within 60-62. But Zapanta, Cunanan, Monserat and Basco all helped to carve out some separation anew at 68-60 for the Phoenix. Steadier execution down the stretch settled the final score.

Zapanta had 23 points on five three-pointers, while Abolucion had 16 for St Benilde.

Garvo Lanete presided over a fourth-period breakaway as San Beda beat Adamson 71 - 65. It was a tight game for the first three periods until Lanete came alive in the payoff fourth period. San Beda went up as much as 61-47 behind Lanete and the strong inside game of American import Sudan Daniel. Adamson tried to make a game of it and came within 63-58 behind the slashing of Alex Nuyles. End-game poise however proved much better for the Red Lions, as the Falcons were unable to sustain their win streak.

^ Sudan is a much better and more natural basketball player than Austin at this point. Athletically they match up very well, about the same size and build, same long limbs, same springs. Sudan however shows that he has been playing the game a lot longer, knows how to work his space on the court better, and to track the ball down in plays. Austin is probably at least a year and a half away from becoming nearly that automatic as a player in organized ball at this level.

Actually malaki yong lamang ng JRU humabol lang. Silungan nailed 2 consecutive 3pt shots in the last minute and half. One of which is 4-5 feet away from the 3pt line. Too bad mintis yong isa pa attempt nya. JRU is playing ball denial defense para hindi mapunta kay Silungan yong bola. Masyadong matagal bago mapunta yong bola sa kanya.

True. UP remains to be a one-man team. It's all Mike Silungan. Woody Co is good but he's undersized and was not up to par with the physicality of JRU.

The 6'8 Alinko is a big disappointment. He is nowhere near the player we saw in Youtube last year. Parang na-swindle ang UP dun a.

JRU dont have the offensive firepower to match that of FEU. JRU will rely on their defense and ruggedness to make things happen. To all thems I have observed in this FMC tourney, JRU is the best team when it comes to putting defensive pressure on guards and ball handling forwards.

The first SBC-ADU game was a close game until the last half of the fourth quarter.

Fr. Martin Cup cannot move the game to a later time since the Arellano University gymnasium is booked starting at 1pm. It is the opening of a chinese league which was suppose to open today, unfortunately, due to unforseen circumstances, they had to move it to next Sunday.

^ sana may magdala ng TV sa Sunday para may updates tayo. Malaking event yung Pacquiao-Clottey fight. Just post the game venue please.

Actually, I didn't expect JRU to dump FEU. I mean they lost so many key players (Cagoco, Sena, Wilson). As for the Finals, the match-up will be good because they might face each other in the Final 4 of the NCAA next season.

Sorry to all Pacquiao diehards, but we cannot move the game to a later time since Arellano gym is booked in the afternoon by a Chinese league. Saturday is a PBL playing day, several of the players are committed to their commercial team. I cannot move it the following Sunday, since it is the final examination of both schools. We cannot also hold it on a weekday, since the players have classes and it is a regular school day in Arellano. And both parties have agreed to play it on that day. SAN BEDA IS THE 2010 FMC COLLEGIATE OPEN CUP CHAMPION!!!

Good thing I watched the game and not the Pacman fight. Clottey was a big dissapointment with his turtle-like defense. He should just go home to Ghana and enjoy his millions.

JRU came into the game very confident because of their vaunted pressure defense which killed FEU in the semis match. However, the tables were turned as it was the Red Lions who showed up with their superior version of the full court press. Hilong talilong ang mga Bombers sa depensa ng Red Lions. ;D

It was a very exciting game. Pacman fight was a ho-hum. ;D

Basically, the Red Lions are bigger, taller and more skilled so they were not bothered too much by the JRU press. The 2-bigs plus 3-quick players combination used by Frankie most of the game was perfect solution to JRU's aggressive defense and spirited offensive rebounding and it allowed the them to counter attack.

Plus, Frankie has 12 or more players to throw in with equal effectivity. Walang dip sa performance, size at talent level even when the starters are resting. So in the end JRU was left gasping and fell to a maze of turnovers.

Hindi naman. Sinagot lang yung tanong. ;D

O sige na nga nananakot na.... ;D

The video clips showed only his post up and shooting talents and boy he can really move inside and shoot from anywhere. But his defense remains a mystery. Haven't seen him in practice yet but one thing for sure is that he's not a lumbering giant. He's quick, agile and versatile, can even dribble using either hand.

If the "Gun" (that's what they call him) can defend like Ekwe, then we will have another dynasty in the making. At 6'7/6'8 , he's just 18 years old so sky's the limit. But let's not count our chicks yet......and we are off topic already. Let's just savor the FMC trophy before it gets stale. ;D
