MANILA, Philippines – Multi-titled mentor Franz Pumaren stepped down as La Salle head coach, Brother Bernie Oca, the school's representative to the UAAP board announced during the team's practice late Tuesday.

Pumaren's younger brother Dindo, who served as his assistant this season, will take over starting January.

But the elder Pumaren, who steered the Green Archers to five men's basketball championship, will still call the shots for the team in the Philippine Collegiate Championship League next month.

Pumaren mentored the Archers for 11 years, highlighted by a four straight title run from 1998 to 2001.

The Archers, however, failed to reach the Final Four for the first time under Pumaren this year.

FRANZ PUMAREN steps down as head coach

De La Salle University announces the resignation of Franz Pumaren as head coach of the DLSU Green Archers effective December 2009. He has expressed his desire to pursue other endeavors outside of coaching.

Assistant coach and younger brother Dindo Pumaren will take over the head coaching duties starting January 2010. Franz will officially turn over mentoring responsibilities to the younger Pumaren after the Philippine Collegiate Championship League in December. Coach Franz will continue to serve as a consultant to the DLSU basketball program.

Likewise, Men's Basketball Team Manager Agapito "Terry" Capistrano has also tendered his resignation to concentrate on his business endeavors and "give a chance to others to manage such a prestigious team." He has served the Green Archers for nine years.

Pumaren, who has been with the University since 1998, steered La Salle to nine UAAP finals and five UAAP championships in the last 11 years. Under his tutelage, the Green Archers also won several championship titles namely the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Champions League, 2006 and 2007 Filoil Flying V MVP Cup, 2007 Nike Summer League, 2004 Fr. Martin Cup, and the 1998 and 1999 National Capital Region Athletic Association Championship, among others. Pumaren was also voted Coach of the Year by the UAAP and NCAA Press Corps in 2007.

"We would like to thank Coach Pumaren for his hard work, dedication, and invaluable service to De La Salle University," said Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission and External Relations and Office of Sports Development Executive Director Br. Bernard S. Oca FSC. "We wish him and Terry Capistrano the best in their new pursuits."
