Phil Collegiate tilt teams up with ABS-CBN
ABS-CBN - Friday, August 21, 2009

MANILA Ė ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. is bringing greater coverage to countryside basketball after partnering with the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL). Officials from the PCCL and ABS-CBN signed a contract that gives the broadcast giant exclusive rights to air PCCL games for the next five years.

Present at the contract signing on Tuesday were ABS-CBN Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gabby Lopez, ABS-CBN President and Chief Operating Officer Charo Santos-Concio, ABS-CBN Chief Financial Officer Ron Valdueza, and ABS-CBN Sports Vice-President Peter Musngi.

PCCL Chairman Rey Gamboa signed the deal. He was joined by PCCL Vice Chairman Oscar Reyes, Atty. Pablo de Borja, and PCCL marketing head Anette De Ocampo.

The PCCL, which is on its sixth year, is a collegiate menís basketball tournament that draws participating teams nationwide.

The league includes Manila-based squads from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) as well as teams from other parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

In 2008, the De La Salle Green Archers won the PCCL crown after defeating the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles. Report from ANCís On The Scene

sana hindi sa Balls ipalabas ito kundi sa studio 23.

Well it seems like abs-cbn can't get PBA and NBA kaya naman gagawin nalang nilang all year eh collegiate sports.

I reckon this is the media mileage the PCCL needs.

Great! Now even more people can be subjected to hearing comments like "repossession" and "15th parallel." ;D

exchanging text messages with joescoundrel, we both agree that ABS-CBN's treatment of the PCCL sucks. last year's coverage by solar was much better. even the linalangaw games with 3 people in the stands in the run-down makati coliseum got live (or delayed but only by an hour or two -- certainly not the way ABS-CBN is doing it now) telecasts.

methinks the difference is brought about by one group's commitment to the sport, and the other group's commitment to their bottomline -- not that that's bad per se but have you guys seen ABS-CBN's annual report? with long-term debt eating up close to 30% of assets, i wouldn't put my money in there even if you paid me!

solar is in no better a position as, per joe's input, they put up more money upfront -- about half a billion -- to land the broadcasting rights to the PBA. sales from advertising airtime, however, haven't panned out as much as they had hoped for. growing pains, though. and being smaller and leaner, solar can make the adjustments more easily than a behemoth like ABS-CBN.

in the long run, you wanna do biz with someone who keeps his or her word. at least, solar showed in the past -- and even today with mercy broadcasts like the milo's BEST games -- that its commitment to the game is top-most, even if it has to pay an arm and a leg to do it.

as for ABS-CBN? well, you decide.

MVP's team just recently bought TV5. Now that can be a new destination.
