AdU might just be the dark horse this season and enter the final 4. Canuday has strengthened their backcourt and we all know he can score. AdU is relatively a tall team and has shown excellent defense in their games. Even without Manyara who is eligible only next season, AdU has enough big men to man their frontline. They also added another shooter in Etrone and two other guys have improved their shooting besides Canada, Alvarez and Nuyles.

Indeed, Adamson looms as a dark horse in Season 72, especially with their improved defense. Shooting will come and go, and no one on this team is a pure shooter in the mold of a Patrick Cabahug, but they can defend well as a team, they know how to break a press with strong precision passing, as well as improved movement without the ball. Outside of Cabahug, every one pretty much just stood around waiting for a play to develop. Now everybody moves without the ball, finds their spot and cut and pass with conviction.

That proverbial leadership role will be taken up by Leo Canuday for sure. As the veteran guard returns, look for him to be the coach on the floor for the Falcons. He's been their best passer, shooter and carrier on the fastbreak, and he's finally figured out the importance of disrupting the passing lanes. It also looks like he's finally shed off all that macho bullshit that got him into trouble in seasons past and has focused exclusively on the game and on his team.

Where is Russel Dix? Did he decide to enroll with Adamson for college? There were reports online that he was trying out with another team this past summer, but there haven't been any news about him lately.

Mareng Taurus, yes the hubby and I are watching on Saturday. Buti na lang Game 5 of the PBA finals was moved to Monday!

KB is disappointed because we got our complimentary tickets from another school pa. As usual they wanted us to pay for our tickets if we got them from Adamson. I guess old habits die hard! Hehe! Nonetheless we will be there to support the Falcons. Good luck to Coach Leo and the boys!

AdU will have to adjust now that Importante, Yambot and Etrone are not on the team. So many missed freethrows. Poor defense inside the paint. Will have to play better since UST seems to be determined to get into the Final Four.

Great game by the Falcons today versus FEU. They had FEU's number 75% of the game. I believe that Adamson was the more disciplined team on the court but were just physically dominated by the Tamaraws in the end game. Adamson still had a chance to pull it off in the closing minute but the no call on Canuday after grabbing an offensive rebound and as he was about to give an outlet pass to Canada probably tilted the game in FEU's favor as Barroca scored on a backbreaking three point shot on the return play to give FEU a 4point lead.

The Falcons have enough tools to win enough to make it to the Final Four.

On a side note: how old is Canuday anyway? He's been on that team for the longest time.

gfy
07-24-2009, 05:45 AM
^ Yup no call. That would have been an easy fastbreak for a 62-61 AdU lead seconds remaining. Nuyles didn't play. FEU didn't play well missing 17 of 27 freethrows. Credit however should go to AdU interior defense. Except for Cervantes (who's just too good inside), the other FEU slashers had a hard time going inside.

Camson went ape shit against FEU in that game. He was doing everything and showed a variety of shots. His best move is probably the almost closed fist smack on Vinluan after getting hit in the face by a wayward elbow during a looseball scramble. Almost earned at least a one game suspension.

Panalo na naging bato pa. Back-to-back bonehead plays by Camson and Galinato. Camson grabbed Maui Villanueva who was rebounding an Adamson miss with only 3 seconds left. Maui makes one and Galinato on the inbound quickly passes to the foot of a streaking teamate.

Camson's mistake was rookie mistake, but a big and costly mistake at that. Sabi nga ng utol ko, nasanay or natatak sa isip nung bata na kelangan mag-foul coz dying secs of the game na -- that's what losing can do to the psyche of most players. If not for that, La Salle would've been humbled. Esp Joshua Webb. Idol yata si Cardona. The Adamson frontline has very good potential. Virtual unknowns ika-nga na hugot kung saan but have the talent and guts to play against the highly-touted teams. Yung Santos who had a couple of blocks on Webb and the fastbreak of Bringas has good timing. Sayang lang talaga. This W would've cemented the respect the Falcons so longed for and sought. That Lester Alvarez kid is good. Now that he's had his breakout game, let's see if he can be consistent at it. Kid was obviously having fun running rings around and punishing the La Salle defense.

Last 3 games lost were by 1, 3, 1. Not shabby at all. Pag nag-mature and naka-adjust ang team na to, watch out "top" teams! Darkhorse for S72 ang AdU.

2-6, with UST at 4-3 and UE and DLSU 4-4.

I think for the Falcons to advance, they will need some Ateneo and FEU assistance (meaning we pull away with 12-2 and or 13-1).

Good job in winning. You played your game and forced on it on La Salle.

Your new mantra says it well. Walang aayaw. Think Positive. Win the games you can win.

I'm hoping that Adamson springs another 'upset' to make the battle for the final two slots interesting. If they beat UE, they'll be only a game back from the 4th slot assuming Ateneo beats DLSU again.

From http://www.inboundpass.com/2010/04/15/nuyles-beats-buzzer-mapua/

Things are looking good for Adamson. Magaling ang Mapua, ang nakalaban nila.

Nuyles beats buzzer, Mapúa
by Anton Roxas

ADAMSON University now has a legitimate weapon available for use in endgame situations.

Third-year guard Alex Nuyles scored on a tough game-winning lay-up at the buzzer to lift his Falcons to victory over the Mapúa Cardinals, 68-67 in the 2010 FilOil Flying V Tanduay First Five Invitational Cup. at the Arena in San Juan last Wednesday, April 14.

The San Marcelino quintet, which finished 5th in the UAAP last season with 5 wins and 9 losses, hopes that this inspiring win will draw some strength from its players to have a good showing in this preseason tournament.

“Well, first and foremost our goal is to get into the Final Four and when we are in the Final Four so many things can happen dahil one or two games you can get into the finals. Dito sa FilOil, this is the right training ground para sa amin. As of now, the confidence of the players is not at 100 percent. I think with this kind of test just like this game against Mapúa, nanalo kami come from behind kami. Lucky shot nung Nuyles,” said Adamson head coach Leo Austria.

The Mapúa Cardinals looked to have locked up the game after Allan Mangahas knocked down a three point basket from the right corner to put his team up, 67-66 with 4.6 seconds remaining in the game. But Austria immediately called a timeout and put the ball in Nuyles’ hands, who then drove towards the right side of the basket and created his own shot in mid-air to win the game. He finished with a game-high 22 points.

“Si Nuyles talaga ang tina-tag ko as one of our go-to guys ngayon dahil tremendous amount of work-out ang ginawa niya and then makikita mo yung bunga ng paghihirap niya ngayon. I think this guy will shine. Baka ito ang maging breakout season niya,” said the veteran tactician.

Second-year forward Eric Camson had an impressive showing scoring 16 points while veteran Jan Colina added 12 points for the Falcons.

The Mapúa Cardinals were led by fifth-year swingman Erwin Cornejo, who had 19 points. 6′5 Jason Pascual had 13 points while Mangahas chipped in with eight.

The Intramuros five, who finished with a 6-12 slate in the NCAA least season, remains steadfast in its goal of gaining some much-needed experience from this tournament.

“Ang goal ko talaga is to be in the Final Four. We have to have a chance to experience being in the Final Four before the NCAA. So, we want the guys to experience kung ano yung klase ng laro sa semi-finals. Kasi our goal this coming NCAA is to be in the Final Four. Kaya kailangan magkaroon kami ng experience sa Final Four dito sa FilOil para yung kanilang maturity gumanda,” said Mapúa’s second-year head coach Chito Victolero.

Adamson, with the win, ties San Sebastian College-Recoletos atop Group B in early action at 1-0. Mapúa, meanwhile, shares the cellar with Jose Rizal University at 0-1.

The scores:

Adamson 68 – Nuyles 22, Camson 16, Colina 12, Lozada 5, Cañada 5, Stinett 3, Alvarez 3, Galinato 2, Manyara 0.

Mapúa 67 – Cornejo 19, Pascual 13, Mangahas 8, Sarangay 7, Maniego 7, Banal 5, Cinco 4, Cabrera 2, Parala 2, Acosta 0.

Quarter scoring: 15-11, 27-27, 55-49, 68-67.

Adamson will get its chance to win a major college title when it goes up against reigning UAAP champion Ateneo in the PCCL Finals. Game 1 is today at 4:00 PM at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in downtown Manila.

Coach Leo Austria does not have to prepare his guys on the basketball side of things - I truly believe the Falcons have this down pat. What Austria needs to prepare for more is the mental and psychological aspects, i.e. making his guys fully aware that Ateneo is an altogether different and more dangerous animal in a championship setting.

Man-for-man Adamson has the athletic edge, with no one on the Ateneo side a straight match for the likes of Alex Nuyles, Lester Alvarez, Jeric Canada, Eric Camson and Austin Manyara. But it is very tough to just outrun or outjump the Blue Eagles, something FEU found out much to their chagrin in the UAAP Finals. Norman Black has highly intelligent, patient and disciplined players who imbibe his system and can run it in their sleep.

This might come down to who can defend and rebound better, and that does not necessarily go to the bigger or more athletic team (again as FEU found out). Adamson has to play the wau Austria wants them to play and not freelance too much. That is how they lost in the Final 4 to this same Ateneo squad, by playing too much "on instinct". It is time to see how lessons have been learned, if they have been learned at all.

Adamson Nears 1st PPCL Title

Adamson University finally figured out how to finish strong in a pressure game, edging reigning UAAP champion Ateneo De Manila 80 - 78 in Game 1 of the PCCL Finals at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Ateneo looked set to duplicate its UAAP Final 4 smack down of Adamson right in the opening quarter, racing to as much as a 21-9 lead behind the steady scoring of Justin Chua and Nico Salva. Adamson just could not buy a bucket in the first quarter because of their packed spacing on the floor and Ateneo's active match-up defense.

In the second period however the Falcons turned the tables by getting on a 16-2 run that saw them grab the lead at 35-32 on a Lester Alvarez trey. Veteran Jan Colina presided over a strong second quarter recovery for the Falcons as he settled down to nail jumper after jumper even with hands in his face. Adamson knotted the count at 37-all going into halftime. "We relaxed too much on defense and Adamson found the seams, especially on the backdoor," lamented head coach Norman Black.

Third quarter action saw Ateneo once again bust out to a 66-55 advantage on the running game, as well as finding Chua once again in the elbow areas for those jumpers. Adamson however hung in there behind newcomer Rodney Brondial's strong inside work and Alex Nuyles on the slashing game.

In the payoff fourth quarter Ateneo looked ready to put the game away as they settled into the zone. But as well as Ateneo was playing, Nuyles took the game into his own hands and went to work. A Nuyles jumper gave Adamson the 77-75 lead with under a minute left. Eman Monfort responded with a trey from the corner to restore the advantage to Ateneo at 77-78.

Nuyles however would not let this one go, somehow managing a twisting layup off a broken play and getting the And-1 as Adamson took the 80-78 lead for the final count. Ateneo had one last chance to at least force OT but an apparent foul on Salva by Colina was let go by Referee Ballecer, even as Black looked ready to tear Ballecer's head off after the let-go.

Colina led all scorers with 16 points and seven rebounds while Nuyles finished with 13.

Chua had 13 and Salamat 12 for Ateneo.

Game 2 is this Sunday at the ULTRA. Game 3 is the very next day, Monday, no venue yet announced.

Ateneo Forces Game 3

Pasig - Ateneo De Manila has not suffered back to back losses in quite a while. They continued this trend with a sound 70 - 59 whacking of Adamson to force a deciding Game 3.

Adamson got out to the early lead but Eric Salamat found the range for his triples today and kept Ateneo in it. With Lester Alvarez, Jan Colina and Janus Lozada on the firing end, the Falcons looked set to bust the game open in the opening period.

Things settled down for Ateneo though as Salamat, Eman Monfort and Bacon Austria organized the Blue Eagle offense in the second period. With the brutal PCCL schedule it looked like neither team had enough energy to sustain any kind of run, as the Adamson game began to sputter very early. But the Falcons still took a 30-26 advantage going into the lemon time break.

In the third period, Ateneo stamped its class for good, as Nico Salva and Kirk Long joined the fray. Salva had all of his points in the second half including this quarter. Long helped stave off repeated rallye attempts by the Falcons with his game control. Salva, Long and Salamat combined to build Atneo's biggest lead at 48-36. Game 1 hero Alex Nuyles tried to put some order into the Adamson game but fired blanks all afternoon and finished with a tired five points including some bungled layups.

Alvarez and Jeric Canada tried to get Adamson going again the payoff fourth period, but Ateneo had the game well in hand. Back to back treys by Salamat gave Ateneo a new 12-point cushion. Alvarez nailed back to back treys himself to make it a game, but that was the last gasp for the Falcons.

Flustered by what they saw as a blatant miscall by the officials on Rodney Brondial, the Adamson bench erupted in collective protest and promptly drew a technical foul from the officials. Adamson fans closest to the action became livid. Head coach Leo Austria took some time to send his team back to the floor and drew a delay of game warning and nearly another technical.

Ateneo rode on steady freethrow shooting to cruise to the final count.

Salamat had five triples for a game-high 24 points, while Salva had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Colina again led the Falcons with 18 points.

In the Junior Division game, Ateneo won an emotional 87-85 victory against San Beda. Down by as many as 15, the Blue Eaglets rode on Keifer Ravena and Von Pessumal to turn things around in the second half. Ravena nailed the winning jumper from top of the key with Baser Amer in his face to preserve the Ateneo win.

Ravena had 34 points to lead all scorers, while Von Chavez had 22 for San Beda. Amer had 21 points and 16 assists.

BEST IN CLASS

Why the heck anybody would ever consider Ateneo De Manila an "underdog" in any basketball tournament in this country remains a mystery. Without the man who delivered their grand slam, without the superstars who made the game look so easy the last couple of years, without any mega-athletes, the Blue Eagles systematically ripped Adamson 73 - 67 to retain the PCCL National Title.

Lester Alvarez got off to a hot start and seemed poised to lead the Falcons to their first ever title in the last 30-plus years. He was running the Adamson offense with aplomb, anchoring the high man-to-man defense of Leo Austria, and generally dictating the tempo of the game. It seemed with Alvarez leading the way, the Falcons were indeed headed to their first ever championship in the Austria era.

Ateneo for its part was not getting it done, playing scattered basketball, getting lost on the switch and recover, and letting guys like Janus Lozada and Alex Nuyles sneak in via the backdoor and weak-side cutting game. It didn't help that the Blue Eagles were not shooting all the well throughout the first half. Game 2 hero Eric Salamat, playing his final game in an Ateneo uniform, just could not get going, even as the big men were unable to execute on the high pick-roll. Adamson took the 33-27 lead at the half.

"I told my boys to remain focused and hungry, because we had this same lead in Game 2, then we collapsed in the third quarter," explained Austria.

Unfortunately that is precisely what happened, as the Blue Eagles reprised their performance in the second half of Game 2. Nico Salva and Kirk Long started to pour it on, with Salamat and Bacon Austria also getting in their own licks. Slava had an inside incursion that made it 38-37 for Ateneo, and the Falcons were suddenly looking like deer in headlights, lost and bamboozled. Black had adjusted the defense into a flexible Box-1 and the Ateneo transition game got going on the strength of their gang rebounding and quick outlets. Long got a flurry of baskets in transition. A Salamat follow-up off a Salva miss gave the Blue Eagles the 66-55 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Nuyles, Eric Camson and Jan Colina however would not let the Falcons just roll over. Nuyles found the seams in the defnese while Colina and CAmson fought for second chance points and crashed the boards with greater alacrity. A Nuyles three-point play off a Frank Golla foul brought Adamson a littel closer, but that would be as close as they would get.

Salva and Long were having a heck of a game. Long buried a trey from the corner fading away while Salva also had his own long jumper, both made with shotclocks expiring. Austria grabbed the rebound that ended the game on one last Adamson heave.

Long had 25 points on 5-6 three-point shooting, while Salva added 24 markers. Salva was also named tournament MVP. Black was named best coach, as if there were any doubt about that.
