Since the appointment of coach Tyronne Bautista as coach of the DLSU Women's basketball team, great improvements were recorded. A power house recruitment program was also established with the recruitment of high school bluechips for the upcoming 72nd UAAP. Best wishes to the Lady Archers!

May we know who the new recruits are, and what HS they used to play?

I think quite a number of them came from WNCAA HS teams. Don't know them specifically though. But heard they have a big pool of rookies. If i'm not mistaken, I believe they got the FBL MVP and another MVP in the WNCAA.

Mukang gusto talaga mag-champion ng DLSU this season. Buti at nabigyan pansin din ang women's game instead of all men's basketball para sa DLSU.

I think it's about time that the school re-establish the womens basketball program. If my memory serves it right, the last championship of the women's basketball team was back in 2002 during the Manalo twins' era.

I agree with their vast recruitment program somehow close to 30 players in the summer league :) they have no reason not to clinch a title in the next 4 years. :)

Lasalle hung on for the tough 50 - 45 win over reigning UAAP champion FEU in the ongoing Fr Martin Cup summer tournament.

Ahead by as many as 10 points midway through the third period at 41-31, the Lady Archers looked headed for an unusually easy win over their UAAP rivals.

Soc Borja, Raiza Palmera and Elise Yazon however conspired to trim the lead all the way dwon to 44-48 with some two minutes and change left in the game.

The Lady Tamaraws however just could not but a basket in the closing minutes while the Lady Archers got extra possessions off long rebounds.

Palmera led FEU with 14 points while Jo Gloriani and Amina Dimaporo each had 12 for Lasalle.

ang tangkad nga! if used properly, she could have the "rabeh-effect" with the women's division in the UAAP. doesnt need a lot of skill, but since there's barely not a lot of women who can go inch for inch with her in the paint, she's basically get a ton of layups. its not going to be a case of having a boat load of skill, but simply just the lack of decent opposition could spell domination for her.

DLSU system right now relies on the quickness of the guards. Actually, wilson and the new big girl are getting lost with the run-and-gun game of the Lady Archers. Tama din ginagawa ni coach tyronne pressing the opponents the whole game. I expect DLSU to have problems with teams with good post players. Hindi lang na-maximize ng FEU yung height nila but I expect FEU to be better come the UAAP.

Blessing din for DLSU yung new point guard nila na si Miller Ong. The rookie is replacing the veteran Dimaporo and usually siya pa pinapatapos ng coach sa game.

Best wishes to DLSU!

The DLSU Lady Archers won their 2nd game this season in 3 games after beating the UE Amazons, 84-72 at the PhilSports Arena. The Lady Archers rattled the the Amazons all-game long with their pressure defense and was able to take an early lead via starters Eileen Urieta, Miller Ong, and Michelle Laureola to give DLSU a 10-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter, 26-16. Even with UE being a smaller team, they were not spared by the aggressive DLSU defense to force early turns allowing the Lady Archers to seize an early momentum and take control of the game from the start.

Coach Tyrone Bautista had the luxury of rotating his players and played just right in the 2nd quarter to hold on to the lead, 41-30 at the break. Come 3rd quarter, DLSU was still strong pushing the lead to as high as 13 points, 56-43 with 6 minutes to go in the quarter. But then the Amazons came back strong towards the end of the third quarter to cut the lead to just 5 points, 56-51, thru their breaks from the charity stripe as Cindy Resultay led her team with her aggressive plays, forcing two Lady Archers to foul out, big men Kady Wilson and Chelisa Calaquian in that stretch. Resultay finished with 14-for-17 from the free throw line.

Come 4th quarter, the Lady Archers regrouped and then regained control of the lead once again, enabling Coach Ty to field in Fretzie Oyao. The Lady Archers tried to go to her and she was managed to score 5 points and 2 rebounds via 2 field goals and a split from the charity stripe. All I can say is that thru time, she'll be a very, very valuable asset for DLSU. She just should develop her positioning and control under the basket and it will always be a field day for her. There was even one play wherein she made a basket with 3 UE players swarming over her and even jumping on her just to prevent her from making a basket but nonetheless, Fretzie was able to convert the basket.

In the 4th, it was a simple cruise control for Coach Ty's ladies. Aivygake Amador, Kat Santos, Hannah Viterbo, Olivia Ojeda, Fretzie Oyao, and Cass Santos managed to hold on and finish the game for the Lady Archers. We still had some lapses maybe because of overconfidence at some stretches since UE is not that tall and there were only two players who really stood out for them. One was Resultay and the other one is Nerissa Cabrera, who managed to hit a couple of treys to make a fight back for the Amazons. The Lady Archers will now face the Adamson Lady Falcons, who are currently playing the Lady Tamaraws as of presstime.

Box Scores:

DLSU - 84 - Urieta 16, Ong 13, Laureola 10, Sancho 6, Dimaporo 5, K. Santos 5, Oyao 5, Calaquian 5, Wilson 4, C. Santos 4, Amador 4, Viterbo 3, Ojeda 3, Ramos 1, Yamamoto 0, Gloriani 0.

UE - 72 - Resultay 28, Cabrera 16, Tan 10, Ventura 9, Junsay 4, Vergara 3, Floralde 2, Paraguan 0, Monzales 0, Montecer 0, Dollero 0.

Quarterscores: 26-16, 41-30, 61-51, 84-72

Basta talaga UM, walang imposible, lahat naipapalusot.

The DLSU Lady Archers improved to 4-2 yesterday after beating the UP Lady Maroons, 61-55. The Lady Maroons almost made a game out of it after being down as much as 16 points, 56-40, at one juncture of the 4th period. The girls started pretty well dictating the game via the pressure defense applied to Lady Maroons as the Lady Archers scored on easy baskets and good ball rotation to settle for a 20-11 lead after the first quarter. It seemed that the UP guards were still trying to get a feel on how to break our pressure defense as to whether attack it or to pass the ball. Good thing the girls took advantage of their tentativeness as starters Gloriani, Ong, Sancho, Yamamoto, and Wilson provided a well balanced attack for the Lady Archers.

The 2nd quarter was a different story though as the Lady Maroons inched closer mainly because that our team was in penalty situation early. The Lady Maroons were more aggressive on that quarter taking advantage most of the time inside dumping the ball in to center Micaela Bautista. But even though the Lady Maroons staged a run, we kept them at bay courtesy of a Hannah Viterbo trey to pad the pad to 28-24 at halftime. More free throws were awarded to UP during that quarter which allowed them to inch closer to us. We had some defensive lapses as well which allowed them to score on baskets mainly on guards Nina Stevens and Jedil Robelo.

For the 3rd quarter, at the start it was a close game with both teams trading punches with the lead not getting as high as four points but towards the end of the quarter, UP committed a string of turns which resulted to easy baskets on our end to give breathing room with a score of 45-38 at the end of the 3rd. It can be seen that UP's players have shown some signs of fatigue already add to that the poor playing condition as the FEU gym, in which you can see players slipping from time to time and if you'll take a look at the player movements inside the court, you'll be able to see that their feet is not safe from any sudden slip that might happen and they can't position themselves very well (plant their foot onto the ground as they prepare their move).

During the 4th quarter, the Lady Archers played very well defensively and this was their best quarter of the game for almost seven minutes. UP's guards have shown fatigue and lack of focus which resulted to turnovers and ill-advised baskets in which DLSU was able to convert. Midway the 4th quarter, DLSU was already up by 16 points, 56-40. Gloriani and Dimaporo were on the frontend of that run manning the backcourt for the the Lady Archers. Everyone thought that the game was fully over until UP started making a run converting four triples on that crucial run to cut the lead to just four, 59-55 with 5 seconds left in the ballgame. Sitti Dimaporo converted her two freebies to finally seal the game and the final score for the Lady Archers to notch their 4th win in 6 games in preparation for their showdown against the Ateneo Lady Eagles this Sunday.

Angeli Gloriani led DLSU with 10 markers to go with her 4 rebounds while Nina Stevens led UP with 16 points and 7 rebounds. We actually shot poorly from the trifecta region with just 3-for-18 clip while UP was 4-for-12. UP was awarded with 21 free throws compared to DLSU's 12. UP was 13-for-21 from the free throw area while DLSU was 8-for-12.

The box scores:

DLSU - 61 - Gloriani 10, Dimaporo 9, Laureola 9, Ong 8, Sancho 7, Yamamoto 6, Viterbo 6, Urieta 4, Wilson 2, K. Santos 0, Calaquian 0, Amador 0

UP - 55 - Stevens 16, D. Paz 11, Robelo 9, Bautista 8, Casino 5, Mercado 4, Cainglet 2, C. Paz 0, Luna 0

Quarterscores: 20-11, 28-24, 45-38, 61-55

I saw the team a while ago played against the newcomer OLFU Lady Phoenix. As expected they demolished their much weaker foe 86-27 to start their 2010 FMC Summer Tournament. But what shocked me on this team is their new system. They are running, even faster than last year. And for almost three quarters, they employed the famous "DLSU press" and forced their opponets to numerous turnovers which are converted to easy fastbreak points.

As for the team composition, Yamamoto will be the captain next year. Also returning are Viterbo and the pretty Kady Wilson ;D Oyao and the reigning ROY Miller Ong didn't played. What made the difference? Their new recruits which include 2 great point guards and 2 solid big men. They are the darkhorse for the title next year.

Coach Tyrone ikaw ba yan ;D From what I saw a while ago, I could say that DLSU had some good recruits especially #7 and #11 (sorry I am not familiar with the rookies or players who used to played for team B in DLSU) who orchestrated the plays well like Aminah Dimaporo. I also commend their press which forced their opponents to a lot of turnovers. NO MERCY. I was also impressed with #16 who is quick for a big men. Overall, this team might pose a serious threat to other UAAP powerhouse team such as Adamson and FEU.

Di pala rookies sina #11 (Kat Santos) at #16 (Cass Santos). Players din sila and sometimes played major minutes. Pero last year was the year of Angi Gloriani and Bernadin Yamamoto. So that makes #7 as a probable ROY candidate. Pero dami pa rin rookies ng DLSU.

The Lady Archers just could not execute their plays earlier today against the determined FEU Lady Tamaraws. FEU started out strong as they pulled away early in the first quarter with a 16-8 lead and then from there, it was an almost easy ride for the Lady Tams as they padded their lead even more increasing the lead to double digits by halftime and by the end of the third quarter. The game ended at 65-35.

The womens basketball finals series will start on Saturday at 11am in Araneta Coliseum pitting the top two teams at the end of eliminations, the Adamson Lady Falcons and the Lady Tamaraws. This for sure will be an exciting contest as both teams won their respective elimination games in a neck-and-neck fashion with the Lady Falcons emerging as victors in the first round by one point while the Lady Tams getting back at the Lady Falcons in the second round with a two-point win.

As for the Lady Archers, they will finish fourth this season and I am hoping that they will be able to get players who can fill-in for the wing position and as well as the pivot spot. Thank you for a wonderful ride as well this season 73. Animo La Salle!

^ Ang basa ng isang player sa UP Women's Basketballay team to beat ang De la Salle together with FEU. Adamson will stand to lose some good veterans (Buendia, Almazan at Buendia).

Medyo young pa ang team na ito pero kabigla na nasa Final 4 pa rin sila. Expect this team to be tougher next year.

From the UAAP Media Center with consolidated reports - - -

De La Salle, UST Unbeaten in Two Games

INNA CORCUERA scattered 11 points and a monstrous 19 rebounds as De La Salle slipped past a stubborn University of the East (UE), 55-52, for its second straight win Sunday in UAAP Season 74 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle gym.

Also streaking to a second straight triumph was University of Santo Tomas (UST), which downed Ateneo, 64-51, on the 17 points, seven rebounds performance of Juvelyn Andaya.

The Lady Archers worked hard for the victory, wearing down the Lady Warriors who were enthusiastic to bounce back from their 52-64 defeat to the UP Lady Maroons at the start of the tournament early last week.

Hannah Vieterbo had 13 points in leading De La Salle, which trailed UE three-fourths of the way—4-9 in the first quarter, 18-26 in the second and 38-39 entering the final period.

Dianne Ventura finished with 21 points and Cindy Resultay laced her 17 markers with 18 rebounds for the Lady Warriors, who rolled to their second straight loss. Katherine Tan contributed 10 rebounds for UE’s losing cause.

Adamson, the two-time champion which yielded UST last Wednesday, got back on track with a 70-58 victory over National University (NU), a rout built around the 19 points and 10 rebounds of Anna Buendia and the 15 markers and 15 caroms of Snow Penaranda.

Jinky Balasta had 12 points and Angelica Ortega 10 for Adamson, whose defenders found difficulty containing NU’s top gunner Kristina Tolentino (23 points) and Gemma Miranda (17).

Far Eastern University also got itself in the win column with a 58-34 clobbering of University of the Philippines (UP), which dropped to 1-1.

Raiza Palmera had 19 points and Allana Lim 16 for FEU, while Ma. Antonia Wong and Kryzza Casino could only settle for seven points each to lead UP, which also totes a 1-1 won-lost card.

Action resumes Sunday also at the Blue Eagle gym with the matches between De La Salle and Adamson at 9 a.m., UST and FEU at 11 a.m., NU and UE at 1 p.m. and UP and Ateneo at 3 p.m.

Ano ba nangyari sa kanya? Injury? So far UST ang nasa taas with no loss. They also defeated Adamson in the opener. Sure ako Final 4 pa rin bagsak ng DLSU. As for the Finals? They have to contend with UST, Adamson and FEU.

From what I have heard, she had an ACL before the start of the season. This has to be confirmed though.

She officially suffered an ACL from a pre-season training. According to reports her recovery is progressing well. Hindi talga kaya ng DLSU without Miller Ong and coach Tyronne knows it. If DLSU wants to make it to the finals, they need the high basketball IQ and point guard skills of Miller Ong.

St Benilde Wins 1st Fr Martin Championship under Velasco

Saint Benilde beat Perpetual Help A in overtime, 113-102, on an overcast Saturday morning to capture the 10th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup at the San Beda Gym.

It looked like the Blazers of head coach Gabby Velasco would just romp away with the title, racing to a 32-18 lead midway through the second period behind the strong drives of Paolo Taha and the sniping of Mark Romero.

But the Altas of the venerable Aric Del Rosario, a one-time Fr Martin tournament director, leaned on the hustle of Joel Jolangcob and Justin Alano, and the scoring soc of Scott Thompson to come within 34-28. Thompson had to step up as Altas main man Juneric Baloria was hobbled with four personal fouls right in the first half.

Crispin Elopre, younger brother of former Alta Crisper, also shone hitting key baskets to keep Perpetual in the game. Elopre hit a go-ahead three-pointer to make it 74-75 for Perpetual.

But Fonz Saavedra answered with a three-ball of his own to restore the lead to St Benilde. Saavedra would hit one more crucial set shot in overtime to put a 99-95 cushion between them and Perpetual.

“I can safely say that the boys are starting to get some confidence, and we are playing more within the system. We can now take our game to the next level and do better when the NCAA opens in June,” Velasco beamed.

Taha led the victors with 27 points, while Romero scattered 18 markers of his own. Taha actually had to sit out almost all of the third period due to early foul trouble. Grey added 16 points motly on his strong driving game throughout overtime in a team-up with Saavedra to break away from the 95-all deadlock.

Thompson finished with 33 points including a crucial basket with 38.2 seconds left in the fourth to force overtime. He still had some two seconds and change to seal the win for Perpetual on a transition play off a St Benilde miss but his layup angled off the glass, far away from the basket. Thompson ran out of gas in the overtime even as Baloria fouled out, dooming the Altas.

Both sides were very vociferous in their complaints against the endless fouls whistled by the three game officials. Unfortunately it really was symptomatic of their poor defense that so many fouls were called. All three Africa imports on either side, and Blazers center Bart Bartolo all fouled out, with at least five other key players saddled with four fouls.

"I'm just happy we finally got a championship. I hope we can build on this," Velasco declared after the traditional photo ops during the modest awarding ceremoy.

On the distaff side, Santo Tomas University found the range early on - including a couple of three-pointers from as far away as 30 feet - to upset reigning UAAP champion La Salle 78-69 to take home the women's division title.

Defending champion De La Salle University whipped University of the Philippines, 66-31, to stay unbeaten in the UAAP Season 77 women’s basketball at Blue Eagle Gym yesterday.

The Lady Archers were merciless after erecting a 17-7 advantage at the end of the first period, leading by as much as 36 points to extend their perfect run to three games.

Alyanna Ong had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Steph Vergara chipped in 10 points for the Lady Archers.
De La Salle took the solo lead after University of Santo Tomas gave Ateneo its first loss of the season, a 55-54 decision, also yesterday.

Mariella Isanan scored the game-winning drive in the last 15.7 seconds and the Lady Eagles failed to score in their last play as Sara Bo-ot bungled a layup.

Jen Angeles led the Tigresses with 14 points, Maica Cortes had a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Kim Reyes had 10.

Claire Aseron fired 13 points while Hazelle Yam added 11 points for Ateneo, which struggled after six-foot Danica Jose got into early foul trouble.

Trailing 41-49 in the payoff period, the Lady Eagles grabbed a 54-53 lead after Jose, who finished with eight points and eight rebounds, nailed two free throws off a Reyes foul with 22.9 ticks remaining.

The first match between University of the East and National University was called off because of the slippery court.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-0) were leading the Lady Warriors (1-1), 6-3, when play was stopped.
