Will John Mbe finally suit up for the Blazers?

Who are the new guys for CSB?

Will Richard Del Rosario grow old enough to qualify for a senior citizen card before June rolls around?

Abangan...

For Mbe suiting up it's probable for the summer leagues but not the NCAA Season.

Lasalle was behind at the end of every quarter except for the one that mattered most. Arvie Bringas, the controversial forward out of the mighty San Sebastian Staglets program, finally showed up in a Lasalle uniform and led the Green Archers to a heart-stopping 67 - 66 victory over tough University of the Philippines.

Fil-Am sensation Mike Silungan looked ready to upstage the Bringas debut as he scored 12 of UP's first 14 points. Lasalle however went to their dreaded fullcourt press and disrupted the UP offense, preventing the Fighting Maroons from breaking away, in a game that saw no double-digit leads.

Silungan however was held to only one point in the payoff fourth period even as Bringas scored key baskets for the green and white. Another Arvie, Braganza of UP, had one last crack to try and get the W for the maroon and teal but just couldn't get a good shot.

Silungan led all scorers with 26 points including four treys, Bringas led Lasalle with 12 points.

In the second game Ateneo turned it up just enough in the end-game to keep St Benilde at bay 76 - 65. Down 32-34 at the half, the Blue Eagles leaned on veterans Eric Salamat from long range and Kirk Long slashing in for key baskets in the pivotal third period to gain a bit of separation from the Blazers.

In the fourth period, reigning UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini was called for an unsportsmanlike foul when he elbowed St Benilde center Robbie Manalac in a box out scuffle. Blazer swingman Chuck Dalanon as usual tried to get a piece of the action but was restrained by cooler heads.

Veteran Jeff Morial nailed a trey to make it 63-61 but the Blazers muffed a couple of trips to the foul line that could have changed the outcome.

Al-Hussaini had 19 points for Ateneo while Morial led all scorers with 20. Another veteran guard, Gelo Montecastro, showed up in street clothes and did not play for St Benilde. Ateneo did without UAAP Season 71 ROY Ryan Buenafe and head coach Norman Black.

In the last game of the day San Beda traipsed through the first half and then totally shocked and awed Mapua Tech iin the second half to come away with the 30-plus point victory. Veterans JR Tecson, Garvo Lanete, Dave Marcelo, JR Taganas and newcomer Maher Villahermosa all pulled together in the second half for the big win.

Any final review on the Blazers' summer performance?

overall, they achieved a huge improvement, taking into account that veteran johnston and montecastro were not in the line-up. many sophomore players were able to step up, mc abolucion for one, did an impressive job especially on defense. he is wise enough to be able to control the tempo on several occassions. one thing that we didn't see during his rookie year. our big men are also running the floor.. manalac is one good screener and has a touch from the outside.

we had a good run in every game, (with the exemption of the mapua game). the issue that the blazers should face now is how to win. the heart to win must be felt. they still seem to rattle down the stretch, especially if the opponent is leading.

we have tio give them the credit. they are still a young team, fighting their way up. all the best we could do now, is to solicit support from the CSB community. something top pump up the morale of our players. :)

faith in the animo.

GO BLAZERS!!

Unfortunately, San Sebastian was too big a job to handle - we lost 83-60 to the Stags. Weird thing for me was while watching the game, the Baste players look more like PBL/PBA age players while the Blazers looked more like real student-athlete varsity players.

NEXT GAME: Wednesday, 19 May 2010, 1pm at The Arena, vs. Adamson University

Let's go out and cheer the Blazers on!!

Hopefully, their teambuilding session this weekend will pay some dividends.

Let's not bother about age gaps between athletes. If the other team has more mature players then it's valuable sparring sessions for the rookies. Besides, I am still hoping they can do better when the NCAA wars begin. Let them have their baptism of fire in the Fil-Oil and let them grow as a team. ;D

As far as player average points are concerned, Lastimosa is the only player right now who can take the role of go-to-guy win or lose. We just have to give the rest the opportunity to shine and gain more confidence. ;)

There is no doubt that he can score, but maybe the coaches should come up with plays that set up Lastimosa as his ballhandling skills leave a little to be desired - let the point guards set him up with staggered screens etc.

Against JRU and FEU, it was stolen balls (nasundutan si Lastimosa), that caused costly turnovers during crunch time. Getaway from isolation plays with him bringing the ball down, set him up instead and create decoy plays as Lastimosa can also drive, draw defense and dish out assists.

He needs to learn patience also ;D

Good observation, I hope the coaching staff anticipates such traps set for Lastimosa and make him share the ball despite the absence of another player willing to share point production chores.

Can those in the know confirm if it's official that Red Cubs Al-Amin and Ralph Nayve are both with CSB's MBT already? If so, good work in recruiting them as they will surely be able to come in and contribute right away for your team. Mababait ang mga bata and they work hard and play smart.

'Wag lang sana kami matapunan ng mga batang ito this coming NCAA season. ;D

St Benilde: Rekindle the Flame
by Joe Buduan for Philippinebasketball.ph

It is sometimes a little difficult to believe that St Benilde is already among the ranks of NCAA basketball champions. Some 10 years ago, the Blazers won the NCAA championship behind the likes of Al Magpayo, Ron Capati, Jay Lapinid and Sunday Salvacion. That was a powerhouse team that just stamped its class on the rest of the NCAA that season under the bench direction of Dong Vergeire. Almost every star on that team went on to play commercial- and pro-league ball. Salvacion is still a mainstay now in the PBA. Not too many years ago they even produced an NCAA Most Valuable Player in Jay Sagad. Sagad was a yeoman-like center who quietly but consistently got his numbers and helped his team in every way he could. St Benilde has expanded as an institution, but has since fallen on some hard times, at least in the basketball front.

When one looks at the players who have at one time or another been on the St Benilde roster, it seems unbelievable that they have not had as much success as their rosters would suggest. Aside from those aforementioned, the following have donned the black and green: Paolo Orbeta, Gary David, Jeff Morial, Gelo Montecastro, Archie David, Willy Johnston, Stan Aldover, and a whole bunch of other talents. It seems unfathomable that they have not been more successful as a basketball program. It seems forever since they’ve seen the Final 4, never mind the Finals. For Season 86, it is high time to bring the “blaze” back into Blazers.

There are still quite a few holdovers who will now assume the role of veteran leaders for head coach Richard Del Rosario. 5-foot-7 Pointguard Mac Abolucion had to take a backseat to the bigger name guards on this team the last few years. Having to play alongside the likes of Orbeta, Montecastro and Morial would certainly guarantee less minutes for someone like Abolucion. But going up against those guys in practice also helped him become a better player, a smarter player, and a more patient player overall. Abolucion is now being trusted to take the reins and lead this team as the primary pointguard.

Other notable returning veterans are 6-foot-3 center-forward Robbie Manalac, 6-foot-5 center Jan Tan, 6-foot-3 forward Alex Wong, 6-foot swingman Christian De La Paz, and 5-foot-9 guard RJ Argamino. 6-foot-2 forward David Urra might also return. These men should provide some stability for the Blazers and lead by example for the newcomers. One man notable for not returning however is also the team’s erstwhile superstar: Montecastro is reportedly transferring to another university.

As for the newcomers, there is three of note: 6-foot-2 forward Timothy McCoy came from Philippine Christian University should make the most immediate impact with his athleticism and toughness. 5-foot-7 pointguard Luis Sinco out of Ateneo De Manila saw heavy minutes in the summer tournaments and might emerge as the sleeper discovery of Season 86. 6-foot-4 forward-center Jeff Ongteco is lean and long but very athletic and should help at the 4/3 spot.

Lasalle Greenhills, the Junior Blazers, should also do well in the toughest high school tournament in the country. 6-foot-2 RP Youth Team forward Michael Pate, 6-foot-4 center Ali Carlos and 5-foot-6 guard Luigi Pumaren lead the team.

Joe should stop drinking while writing. He probably meant Gary SEVILLA.

Jeff Ongteco is a legit 6-foot-4, very athletic kid, can run and can jump, should be a good addition for the Blazers. Also loves to study, which would make him a model student-athlete.

Best of luck to the Blazers later vs Arellano. I look forward to seeing how Mac Abolucion and Luis Sinco run the team. They should have an interesting match against Leonard "Little Chief" Anquilo.

It is important for the Blazers to control the tempo against an Arellano team whose idea of an offense is predicated on nothing but transition and the early offense. If St Benilde can somehow keep Arellano from busting out at every opportunity this should be a good W. Locate your man, box out, gang rebound, control the boards and always jam the outlet to prevent transition and quick-hit opportunities.
