Bulldogs down erratic Maroons, 74-64

MANILA, Philippines – The National U Bulldogs were all business on Sunday, dealing an erratic University of the Philippines a 74-64 in Day 2 of the 72nd UAAP men's basketball tournament.

"I was not surprised that we won, I was surprised how we won," said NU Bulldogs coach Manny Dandan, adding his coaching staff made a lot of work breaking down UP's game that provided them with insights on how to defeat the Maroons.

"Gusto talaga naming manalo, because sa preseason lagi kaming tambak sa UP," added Dandan. "We scouted them. We had a lot of sleepless nights especially the coaching staff because we want to win in our first game."

Dandan added that the Bulldogs are well conditioned to play this year because of their new facilities and quarters, courtesy of the family of tycoon Henry Sy, the new owners of the school.

"May konting allowance din pero hindi naman 'yon ang mahalaga. Ang mahalaga sa amin, may maayos na mapagpapraktisan at matutulugan ang mga players," said Dandan, even requesting the media to visit NU and check out its new facilities.

The Bulldogs showed that they are in top shape as their defense forced the Maroons to a horrendous 37 turnovers, just two below the current record of 39 posted by, ironically, their predecessors at NU in 2005.

But for Dandan, the important thing is that the team can now compete.

And the Bulldogs indeed showed their fangs starting in the second quarter wherein they turned an 18-10 lead by the Maroons in the first quarter into a 26-11 advantage after the first half.

The Bulldogs didn't stop there but continued to play tough defense and manned the shaded area well with second year center Jewel Ponferrada making his presence felt.

With their defense providing offensive breaks, the Bulldogs even posted a 70-44 lead in the last quarter.

"Mahalaga ang ginagampanan role ni Jewel," said Dandan, referring to the center from Holy Cross of Davao whom he is developing as a possible Danny Ildefonso, the current San Miguel center who started to make a name for himself playing for the Bulldogs.

"Di namin inaasahan na matatambakan namin sila. Nagpursigi kami dahil nga sa pre-season lagi kaming tambak sa kanila (UP)," Ponferrada said. - GMANews.TV

BULLDOGS BITE MAROONS FOR WIN NO.1
By Alder T. Almo
12 July 2009 05:38 PM

The National University (NU) Bulldogs surprised everyone with a convincing 74-64 win over fancied University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons in the 72nd Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Araneta Coliseum.

NU, which only managed two wins last season, shrugged off a listless start overcoming an eight-point deficit to open its season with a win.

Davao transferee Joseph Hermosisima sank three of his four triples in the third period to keep the Bulldogs afloat. Hermosisima's outburst came on the heels of his backcourt partner Michael Luy's cramps injury.

The Bulldogs continued their attack padding the lead to 26, 70-44, on Larry Malanday's alley-oop in the 6:17 mark in the payoff period.

With their full court press in full display, it was all Bulldogs' show in the second half.

"This is a big win for us and for (NU) Chairman Hans Sy. Credit goes to the whole team from the players to the coaching staff, who spent sleepless nights watching the tapes," Nu Coach Manny Dandan said.

The SM Group led by Henry and his son Hans Sy reinvigorated NU's school and sports program after buying a major stake last year.

No longer bereft of logistics and modern facilities, the Bulldogs were a step ahead and knew exactly every Maroons' move in this game.

Hermosisima's 12 points led NU's well balanced attack. Six more Bulldogs scored nine or more points to contribute to the rousing win.

NU's one and only big man Jewel Ponferrada held his own against the celebrated Magi Sison, who had a stint in the Smart Gilas-RP Team in the summer.

Ponferrada finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds and two shotblocks against Sison's four and six boards.

The Scores:

NU 74 - Hermosisima 12, Singh 10, Ponferrada 10, Malanday 10, Luy 9, Batac 9, Baloran 9, Terso 4, Manito 1, Roy 0, magat 0, Fabula 0, Cabaluna 0.

UP 64 - Padilla 11, Gomez 11, Martin 9, Lopez 9, Co 9, Sison 4, maniego 4, Hipolito 3, Reyes 2, Juruena 2, Gingerich 0, Gamboa 0, Astorga 0.

Quarters: 10-18, 36-29, 53-44, 74-64.

Congrats to NU!

With the brains of a coach Manny Dandan, kulang nalang talaga was facilities, but now that NU has it, count that NU will be a better formidable opponent this year.

But wait for next year for the Bulldogs wherein they will have a Final Four caliber team to start season 73.

If NU plays organized basketball, then can even pull the rug underneath the Warrior's feet, if UE plays the same way in that ATENEO game... If UE get's back to it's organized ways, then NU will have a tough time.

Talk about spoilers, NU beats DLSU 63-61.

Bookend wins for NU. Three more wins than some had expected. Good season, and definitely a team to watch out for next season.
