Im referring to players, who, upon entering the court or receiving the ball, will get a thunderous applause, laughters, howls or cheers either for mockery or insult. Somehow, these players have become famous not because thay are so good but thay are fun to watch. The life of the league. And we need them............

Sonny Cabatu
Cris Bolado

EJ Feihl
Topex Robinson
Mark Andaya
Alex Crisano
Bonel Balingit

Torion and Valenzuela, when these two are still in Red Bull and when they are playing against Ginebra. Torion was tagged as "adik" and Valenzuela as "Diego". ;D

Mamaril, nang maglaro kay Jawo became a respected center. I remember very clearly Bady Dalupan saying dumaan sa kanya si Mama', as he was fondly called, sa Crispa pero kay Jawo lang daw umasenso yung player.

benjie paras?!? i know he's already a comedian on TV, but back when he was still with shell, even fil-shams were put to shame because of his inside strength and rugged power off the boards. he is the only PBA player to have won the rookie of the year and most valuable player at the same time, and he has won two MVPs in his career. laughingstock he definitely wasn't, unless one noticed how he would sway his arms like a girl when he ran.

Homer Se pala

And come to think of it, even Robert Jaworski would get howls of approval after tripping a player down.

Sir Oca.....im retracting Mamaril from my list. Maybe it has something to do with his physical appearance.

The Gilbey's Gin team featured unheralded and seldom used players such as Ed Ducut, Roland Buhay and Marlo Jacutin. Just hearing their surnames is already hilarious.

Jayvee Gayoso - a very "enthusiastic" player under coach Jawo
"Mad Max" Delantes, Jun Marzan - pesky defensive specialists
Wynne Arboleda - "Boss Wynne" - untouchable/untradeable point guard
:D

although Sila Cabatu, Rambo Sanchez, balingit, etc. are laughingstocks o pinag tatawanan sa hardcourt, they are more entertaining that I'd rather watch them play than mga boring fil ams like Pennisi and DeVance.

I remember when he played for SMB after when he was dropped by Shell. The crowd would would always shout when he has the ball. Pinapasok na lang siya pag sobrang lake na ng lamang nila o ng kalaban.

buking na edad ko nito: does anyone remember when tito varela -- later referee varela of the PBA -- played for the redmanizers? i can still recall staring wide-eyed at the TV and wondering what all the laughter from the gallery was about -- even my dad would be grinning from ear-to-ear -- whenever coach dalupan would send him in. IIRC, that would be during garbage time, when crispa was well beyond the reach of the opponent. he would dribble the ball away (which reminds me, did the PBA have a shotclock back then? even another funny man yoyong martirez would do that) in an almost comical manner. lalong matindi ang halakhakan pag naka-shoot pa siya ;D !

i think both messrs. varela and martirez are involved in politics today -- martirez in pasig where i live and varela i don't know where. philip cezar and atoy co also tried their hand at comedy in the movies, as did alvin patrimonio years later. almost all of those i mentioned except "the captain" became active in politics.

and it's no wonder: our style of politics is a laugh in this country. but at least our former ballers truly entertained the people while they did :). it's the trapos that are the real tragicomedy -- and they're no longer funny :(.

Varela used to be known as "Kojak" during his UE days. Heck, he used to have curly hair but chose to shave it off. In a time when shoulder length hair was fashionable for men, wearing a shiny bald pate was going against the norm.
He actually was a national player in 1975, and later on was Baby D's defensive stopper on those high-powered Redmanizers teams.*
Yoyong Martirez didn't have any real jumpshot at all. It seems like he would toss the ball up from behind his head with his two hands, and he would almost always jack it up from top-of-the-key. His field goal percentage was padded by a lot of layups. To give you an idea of how accurate his shot was, it was to the PBA what Wilt Chamberlain's free throws were to the NBA.* :P

remember when Crispa rallied from a 0-2 deficit to defeat Toyota in the 1976 PBA Finals, sa mga recollections ko, ang ganda daw ng laro ni Jaworski in the first two games which the tamaraws won, but in Game 3, Baby Dalupan assigned Tito Varela to guard the Big J at nahirapan si jawo maka shoot, it is possible Big J got blinded by Varela's shining head.

ang napanood ko sa TV was a Manila Beer game in 1986 nun pinasok si Tito Varela, tawa ng tawa si Joe Cantada and he keeps mentioning of the guy with no hair (di pa uso kalbo nun), then at one instance Varela converted a three point play and the crowd cheered, kasama na mga laughter.* *

I think that was in 1975, when Toyota was bannered by Byron "Snake" Jones, arguably the PBA's best all-around import before Billy Ray Bates came into the picture years later.

IIRC, that was the Third Conference, where, down 0-2, Dalupan gambled on an All-Filipino lineup as the Redminizer imports were not as good as the Comets', and swept the next three games to run away with a championship.

this thread reminds me of the "mythical 5" lineups me and my classmates used to think up during our high school days...

sample lineup:

F - ponky alolor
F - ricky relosa
C - romy mamaril/bonel balingit
G - choy estrada (?)
G - teroy albarillo (?)
ROY - max delantes

di ko na maalala kung sino yung tinuring naming "MVP", but this was a few years before the time of dudut... :D

1989 All Filipino yun laban ng Shell at Presto (prior to the SMB-Purefoods main game where samboy had this near fatal accident) naalala ko pa si Ed Ducut, binibigay ng mga shell players ang bola sa kanya in the final two minutes of a won ballgame (final score 155-130) and Ducut keeps stuffing the ball making the other team and their players (Presto) look foolish, ang saya ng first game and the crowd were having some fun.

I remember this incident. Jojo Lastimosa (Purefoods) clotheslines Samboy Lim (San Miguel). Halos umikot ng 360 degrees si Samboy Lim. Samboy's head hit the floor. Kitang-kita din na mala-gripong daloy ng dugo mula sa ulo ni Samboy na tumulo sa hardwood.

si Chito Loyzaga, nun naglalaro pa sa Great Taste, or even sa Toyota, laughingstock ang dating, although di naman siya bangko but his plays seems very akward na minsan katawa tawa, there was a Great Taste game in 1985 when shooting two free throws, yun una airball! and the commetators, Joe Cantada and Joacqui Trillo laugh, the second free throw, dumaplis lang sa net. at meron pa a won ballgame against Tanduay when Chito even fouled a Tanduay player at the buzzer, sending him to the free throw line.

Chito became a serious player with a fine touch from the outside nun lumipat siya sa Ginebra, blossom under the tutelage of Big J.
