If FEU isn't the tournament favorite here I don't know who is.

Any idea what the Nike roster of the Tams will look like, Dark? Will it be mixed A and B?

FEU has the following players practicing with Harbour Centre:

Jenz Knuttel
Mark Barroca
Benedict Fernandez
Paul Sanga
Jun Tanuan
JR Cawaling
Mac Baracael (since Burger King is not fielding a PBL team this conference)
Reil Cervantes
Aldrech Ramos
Jun Vinluan

Barroca, Cawaling, Ramos and Baracael will also be pulling double duty with Toroman's national team. Fernandez and Baracael are done with the UAAP.

That leaves the following players still with FEU but not with Harbour:

Pipo Nuondoo
Mac Macazo
Sonny Abaring
Glen Eguilos
Two Fil-Am type guards who saw action in the last two FMC conferences
The Manalo boy who came from MMC
At least two more guards who I believe are walk-on recruits

As per agreement with Fil Oil those seeing action in that tournament are most likely the same guys who will play in the UAAP. I know for a fact that FEU will be fielding its B Team or those who will definitely NOT see action in UAAP Season 72 on its FMC roster.

The question that remains is who will be pulling double duty, either with Fil Oil and Nike or FMC and Nike? I would think the two Fil-Am types as well as Manalo, Eguilos, Vinluan, Abaring, Macazo and maybe Nuondoo will pull some sort of double duty and play on the FEU Nike roster.*

Tams trample Lyceum-Manila
by JP Abcede

Far Eastern University dominated Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila, 73-58, on May 14 in the 2009 Nike Summer League at the FEU Gym.

The Tamaraws broke away in the third period, leading by as much as 20, 61-41. Jan Inri Vinluan scored off the offensive glass in the waning moments to give Far Eastern the biggest lead.

However, the highlight of the blowout match was when Lyceum-Manila head coach Bonnie Tan was ejected for excessive complaining in the 5:09 mark of the same period. There was a brief lull before Tan exited, bringing along with him some bench players.

The home team took advantage and had a 9-4 spurt en route to the 20-point gap.

This is the Tams’ third win in the tournament, tying with Mapua Institute of Technology in seniors Group C. Also undefeated in the bracket is De La Salle University with a 1-0 standing.

Reil Cervantes lorded the paint with 17 points, while Ryan Roose Garcia put up 13 markers and three assists. Hippolyte Noundou had a near double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

Allen Difuntorum led the Pirates with 12 points.

In a no-bearing bout, University of the Philippines won its first game of the tourney, defeating University of Santo Tomas, 71-62.

Woody Co headed the Maroons with 26 points and five rebounds. Martin Reyes added 15, while Michael Silungan had 14.

Clark Bautista scored 16 points for the Tigers with Jerick Teng and Khsim Mirza producing 15 markers each.

Tams gain fourth straight win
http://www.nikebasketball.com.ph/
by Jonas Terrado

Far Eastern University frustrated Mapua Institute of Technology, 79-71, for its fourth straight victory in the 2009 Nike Summer League seniors' division at the FEU gym in Morayta, Manila last May 18.

Two days after both squads played in another preseason tournament, the Tamaraws continued their mastery of the Cardinals behind the efforts of ex-RP Youth standout Ryan Roose Garcia, Reil Cervantes and Pipo Noundou.

Garcia registered 20 points, two rebounds and five assists, Cervantes added 15 points and hauled down five boards while Noundou also had 15 points and seven boards for the FEU cagers.

The Tams need just one victory to clinch top spot in Group C. They will take a one-week rest before meeting rivals De La Salle next Monday in a highly-anticipated matchup.

Mapua, which got 17 points, six rebounds and two assists from Erwin Cornejo, fell to 3-1 for third place in the group behind the Green Archers' slim 1-0 record.

Leading by just three points in the second quarter, FEU closed out the period on a 12-0 run to take a 44-29 advantage at the half before pushing the lead to a high of 20 points, 73-53.

But the Cardinals chipped the lead to single digits behind Cornejo, Macky Acosta and Mark Sarangay.

Acosta had 13 points and six rebounds while NCAA rookie of the year Allan Mangahas chipped in 13 points and five boards.

Next game. May 25 vs la Salle.

FEU, three NCAA powers complete Nike Final Four cast
by Mia Domingo
inboundpass.com

THE FINAL Four of the 2009 Nike Summer League is locked, loaded and ready to go.

Far Eastern University warded off the University of Perpetual Altas with a convincing 89-51 triumph in the first of four quarterfinal matchups at the FEU Gym last June 8. Bannered by the Philippine Developmental team trio of Mark Barroca, Aldrech Ramos and JR Cawaling, the Tamaraws were on cruise control from the get-go and converted from almost all corners of the hardwood.

Barroca led the way for the tourney hosts with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Ramos and Reil Cervantes combined for 23 points. Raffy Ynion was the lone bright spot for the losing Altas, tallying 15 points.

In the second game, San Sebastian College-Recoletos survived a late Jose Rizal University surge, 77-75. The biggest lead of the game for the Recto-based squad stood at 13, 61-48 at the end of the third period, but a four-minute scoring drought coupled with a JRU surge trimmed the lead to just two, 76-74 with 15 ticks left in regulation. Jimbo Aquino then split his charities to up the Stag lead to three with 10 seconds remaining. In the ensuing possession, JRU gunner John Wilson was fouled from behind the three-point line in the act of shooting with three seconds left, giving the Shaw unit a chance to send the game to overtime. However, he muffed two of his three free throws, costing coach Ariel Vanguardia’s wards a seat in the semis.

Aquino led the Stags with 13 points while Gilbert Bulawan added 12. Wilson paced Jose Rizal with 22 markers.

Later in the day, San Beda College and Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila finished out their game, which was stopped after the first half of action last Thursday, June 4, because of a slippery playing court. After a close opening 20 minutes that saw the Red Lions lead only by two, the NCAA champs stepped on the throttle in the third quarter to pull away, 60-46 with 10 minutes left to play and never looked back en route to an 86-70 win. Bam Gamalinda led the Red and White squad with 14 points and four rebounds with Chico Tirona and Garvo Lanete adding 11 apiece. Joseph Abaya had 13 points for the Pirates.

Letran completed the semifinal cast with a 55-46 win over Adamson University in the nightcap. The Falcons led early on but squandered the lead for good at the start of the fourth quarter after rookie Roider Cabrera sent center John Foronda to the charity stripe. Foronda duly obliged, sinking both freebies as the Intramuros outfit never looked back, even leading by as many as eight with 43 ticks left after a Reymar Gutilban jumper.

Rey Guevarra led the Knights with 14 points and six boards while Jam Cortes added a double-double performance of 10 points and 14 boards. Junard Yambot, on the other hand, led the Falcons with nine points. No Falcon scored in double figures but had a balance in scoring.

The semis begin this Thursday, June 11, at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City. The curtain-raiser at 2:30 p.m. pits the Stags and Knights in an all-NCAA showdown. At 4 p.m., the Red Lions will lock horns with the Tamaraws.

The scores:

First game:

FEU 89 – Barroca 16, Cervantes 13, Ramos 10, Sanga 11, Noundou 11, Garcia 6, Cawaling 6, Eguilos 6, Caluag 4, Pearce 4, Knuttel 3, Exciminiano 2, Manalo 2, Tanuan 1, Guerrero 0, Cruz 0, Romero 0.

Perpetual Help 51 – Ynion 15, Elopre 9, Galabin 8, Salvado 6, Carullo 5, Salanga 4, Sicat 2, Roño 2, Liaz 0, Hainga 0, Villadoes 0, dela Cruz 0.

San Beda leaned on the game-long brilliance of JR Tecson and the clutch end-game shooting of Garvo Lanete to edge Far Eastern University 74 - 72 in their Final 4 encounter. San Beda will face the tough San Sebastian Golden Stags in the one-game Finals this Saturday at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig.

Trailing most of the game and down by as many as 13 points at several stages, the Red Lions turned it up behind Tecson and American import Sudan Daniels. Tecson trimmed a double-digit deficit late in the second quarter to 31-39 with his second trey and then a breakaway layup to end the first half.

FEU, playing without key rotation players Paul Sanga, Aldrech Ramos and Jun Vinluan, started to show signs of physical fatigue in the third period. Tecson, Daniels, Lanete and Chico Tirona pounced on the Tamaraws to seize the lead at 57-56 at the end of the quarter on a buzzer-beating trey, Tecson's third.

In the payoff fourth period, the Tamaraws looked obviously spent as Mark Barroca, Ryan Roose Garcia and JR Cawaling had lost a lot of spring in their step and missed some close shots. Lanete nailed a trey and then made off with a transition layup to give the Red Lions the 71-69 lead with under two minutes left.

Cawaling made it 72-73 with still nine seconds and change left on a 24-foot trey. Then Garcia bungled a layup attempt while Reil Cervantes was called for traveling on FEU's last attempt at the basket. Tirona split his charities off a desperation foul by Barroca for the final count.

Tecson had a game-high 30 points while Daniels added 14. Cawaling led FEU with 25 points.
