Summer is officially here for hardcore hoops fans ---

The Fr. Martin Cup will give lady dribblers an equal chance to show their wares as it holds a women’s tournament
simultaneous to the men’s event of the 15th Fr. Martin Summer Cup set to unfold on April 15.

Open to all colleges and universities nationwide, the women’s event had already attracted reigning UAAP champion Far Eastern University, La Salle, Ateneo and National U and La Salle-Dasmarinas, La Consolacion and St. Benilde are expected to follow suit.

For more inquiries, interested parties may contact Ato Badolato at telephone no. 735-6011 local 2104 or Joey Lim at cellphone no. 0917-810023.

The men’s side had already drew participation from San Sebastian-Cavite, PMMS, TIP, St. Clare, PLM, Informatics, Letran, Jose Rizal, FEU, Ateneo, Arellano, Faith-Batangas, Olivarez, STI, La Consolacion and Angeles U.

Comprising the boys’ section are Letran, San Beda, Perpetual Help, San Sebastian, Adamson, Santo Tomas, Ateneo, Ateneo de Naga, Montessori-Naga, Arellano, STI, St. Jude and guest team Nokia-RP youth team.

Organizers Badolato and Lim said they could still accommodate more entries and those interested may submit their application on or before Tuesday.

“We’re still open until Tuesday,” said Badolato.

Participating Teams in the Fr Martin Cup summer tournament:

Either San Sebastian College Manila or Letran College will make it an even 20 teams.

If anyone can enlighten us as to whether or not the Faith Academy of Tanauan is related to the Faith Academy of Kirk Long and Vince Burke and the Tanchis, we would really and greatly appreciate it. I have visions of blonde blue-eyed players speaking in perfect North American English and they going "ala eh" or "a-ah" at the end of every sentence.

Men's Junior Division ---

San Beda Letran
San Sebastian Manila Perpetual Help
Santo Tomas Far Feastern FERN
Ateneo De Naga Ateneo De Manila
STI Colleges Montessori De Naga

University of the East San Beda Alabang
Adamson Philippine National Women's Team

Yes, that is not a typo, the RP Women's Team of Coach Haydee Ong will compete in the junior division of the FMC as part of their summer workout regimen.

As a reminder to everyone, the FMC Summer junior division allows players who are UNDER 19 YEARS of age to participate EVEN IF THEY ARE COLLEGE STUDENTS already.

Women's Division --- Ateneo De Manila, Lasalle, University of the East, Far Eastern University, Adamson and possibly National University. Do not ask me what the NU Ladies call themselves.

Game Day 1 is on Wednesday 15 April 2009 at the San Beda gymnasium beginning 9:00 AM.

Game days are Mondays at La Consolacion, Wednesdays and Fridays at San Beda, and Saturdays at Arellano.

With two other big tournaments this summer it should be interesting to see who will be on the B Teams of the big schools who have traditionally done well in the FMC, i.e. Ateneo, FEU, JRU, Arellano and San Beda.

Interesting personnel questions:

1. Will Ateneo be lining up those two tall boys form the province in this tournament already?

2. With all of their regulars and up-and-comers presumably seeing action in the Fil Oil and Nike, who will be on the FEU B lineup?

3. ^ That applies to San Beda and JRU as well.

4. No more Orlando Daroya for Arellano, so who is the new stud superstar for the Chiefs now?

5. Will Informatics be lining up 6'5" journeyman African import Chris Acqualiful and 6'5" NCBA renegade Sam Razon?

6. Exactly how good are Rey Parks, Keifer Ravena and the rest of the U-16 RP Team, will they embarrass the hardest of hardcore competition, or will they be reminded how young they really are?

7. Will we see the enigmatic John Mbe in yet another new uniform sitting on yet another new bench being a royal pain for yet another new coach?

8. How will the raging hormones of high school boys going to fare against the (some of the ) gorgeous women of Coach Haydee Ong?

Will Al "Shaq" Bugarin really bang bodies with former Queen Eagle Cassandra Tioseco in the low blocks?

Can Roy Sumang take it to Merenciana Arayi? Can any high school boy?

Can wunderkind Jerry Balansag score at will against the likes of Aurora Adriano and Diana Jose?

Joe,

Read in Interbasket that Arellano has their own imports from Ghana.* Chris Okpe is a 6' 8" center while John Carneh is a lean 6' 5" forward.* They even have a picture of the two players with an official of the school in both this fora and interbasket.* I guess Arellano is planning to make a big splash once they are accepted by the NCAA.

School is not over in the States until end of May or early June.* How can Ray Jr. practice and play with the national team?* This was the same question I posed about Norbert Torres last year when he was part of the trainning in the States while school was in session in Toronto.* The national youth team lacks ceiling, isa lang yata ang 6' 5" and over unless the coaching staff can pick-up a Fil-something player during their US trainning.

Cassie Tioseco need not worry about hard fouls, big Jim will be around to watch the games.* *;D

Is Norman Black almost finished with recruitment for season 74?* There are "4" AHS players on the national youth team.* Kulang na lang ang big man but Fernando and the boys from Xavier would already be on the team.

Good thing FMC already has a women's division. I love to see the RP team women's compete against the boy's juniors. Since FMC had already introduced the women's division, it will be better for the women's game if FMC will promote and hold a girl's division next season.

Teka, di ba't ang coach ng UE ay isang National Coach? Of course it is not a national team the Cubs went up against. Pero kung may respeto ka sa katayuan mo as a national coach, bakit mo hahayaang matambakan ka ng 65 points.

Ateneo De Manila totally clusterf---ed the bejeezus out of San Beda Alabang 101 - 33 in the ongoing Fr Martin Cup summer tournament juniors division.

Playing slightly tight in the first five minutes, the Eaglets missed their first four shots, all of which were point blank. Rookie Louie Sinco, a fourth-year sensation a la Alec Rivera a couple of seasons ago, then went on to score the team's first 11 points. By the time the first period buzzer ended, Ael Banal finally nailed a trey to make it 19-8 in favor of the blue and white.

Kevin Errazo, Andro Alonte and Dan Armenia looked ready to be more meaningful contributors in Season 82 as they and the rest of the bench then presided over the blowout.

In the second half, big men Al "Shaq" Bugarin, Tim Capacio and Paolo Pe exerted their dominance over the woefully undersized San Beda frontline.

Sinco, a PRADA veteran, led all scorers with 26 points, five steals and five assists. Why the hell he was never on the UAAP team before is truly mind boggling.

Two other kids surnamed Gadia and Daez join Sinco as the latest Blue Eaglets. Daez, who looks 5'9" in his sneakers, can dunk.

In women’s action, La Salle trounced Adamson, 53-45, and defending UAAP titlist Far Eastern U smashed University of the East, 55-39, to boost their stock in this event backed by Molten, www.gameface.ph and Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr.

FEU FERN took until the fourth period to realize how serious the RP Women's Team is, as the boys from Fairview hacked out a 73 - 57 victory in the ongoing FMC summer tournament at the San Beda gym in Manila.

Ironically it was former FEU Lady Tamaraws Bernadette Mercado, Chovi Borja, Aurora Adriano and Diane Jose who kept the RP Team in the fight with good short passing inside, quick ball swings along the three-point line and excellent recognition on the cutters. Merenciana Arayi also got in on the act with timely hits from trey range and a couple of good strong drives at the baseline.

Veterans Nick Paulino, Arwin Albano and newcomers Jun Romeo and Eldrick Estacio turned it up in the late third period to turn a relatively close game into a rout. By the time Albano and Romeo were pulled out permanently by assistant coach Addy Papa the Baby Tamaraws had erected their first 20-point lead at 61-41 early in the last quarter. Fats Tolentino and Arayi tried to bring the RP Team back but the superior speed and size of the Baby Tams were just too much for the nationals.

A rather awkward situation occurred midway through the third period when Jay Espinosa slammed into Tolentino on a transition play for FEU-FERN. Espinosa then fell right on top of Tolentino as she fell to the floor, belly to belly, eliciting a slight yelp from Tolentino and some hooting from the incredibly well-attended gallery.

Romeo led all scorers with 16 points while Arayi had 15 for the RP Team and Tolentino 10.

Arellano, 3 others enter Last 8 of Fr. Martin Cup
GMANews.TV

MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University led three other Group B teams to the quarterfinal round of the 15th Fr. Martin Summer Cup.

The Chiefs, the defending men’s champion, completed a nine-game sweep of its elimination round matches after a 63-56 win over Olivarez College at the San Beda College Gym in Mendiola, Manila.

Arellano will next face De Ocampo Memorial College, which earned a quarterfinal berth after a 66-64 win over reigning NCRAA titlist Universal College of Nursing.

Defending UAAP champion Ateneo, Philippine Merchant Marine School and NCAA season 84 runner up Jose Rizal University also joined Arellano and De Ocampo in the quarterfinals after beating their respective opponents.

Ateneo tripped Olivarez College, 63-56, PMMS ousted Far Eastern University, 75-58, while JRU crushed National College of Business and Arts, 70-49.

The other two quarterfinalists in the seniors’ division are San Sebastian College-Cavite and Lyceum de Subic Bay.

San Beda College-Rizal, meanwhile, will face St. Jude Catholic College at the start of the juniors’ quarterfinal matches.

Other quarterfinal match ups will have two-time NCAA juniors champion San Sebastian College going up against University of Perpetual Help, 2008 UAAP juniors’ titlist Ateneo will meet Adamson while University of Santo Tomas battles Far Eastern University-FERN.

In the women’s contest, La Salle capped its elimination round campaign with a 74-54 rout of rival Ateneo for its eighth straight win and a spot in the finals.

Defending UAAP women’s champion FEU downed Adamson, 68-64, to claim the second finals berth where it needs to beat La Salle twice to snatch the crown. – GMANews.TV

Arellano strengthens title defense bid, enters Fr. Martin Cup semis

MANILA, Philippines – Defending men’s champion Arellano University crushed De Ocampo Memorial College, 84-72, to enter the semifinal round of the 15th Fr. Martin Summer Cup at the San Beda College-Manila Gym.

The Chiefs, under new mentor Junjie Ablan, won their 10th straight game.

Arellano bags FMC three-peat

Arellano University walloped PMMS, 73-52, to clinch its third straight title even as San Beda slew reigning UAAP high school champion Ateneo to rule their respective divisions in the 15th Fr. Martin Summer Cup at the San Beda Gym.

La Salle likewise pulled off a huge feat as it humbled defending UAAP women’s titlist Far Eastern U, 53-46, to complete a 10-game sweep of the event backed by Molten, www.gameface.ph and Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, Jr.

The win should be a welcome gift for the Chiefs, who will be one of the three guest teams suiting up in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament unfurling June 27 at the Big Dome.

For the Red Cubs, it marked a good start on their way back to redemption after crushing out of the Final Four in last year’s NCAA juniors season for the first time in more than two decades.
