Archers parade top rookie in Filoil MVP Cup
Updated April 12, 2009 12:00 AM*

MANILA, Philippines - Sensational high school standout Arvie Bringas debuts in green uniform when De La Salle University faces archrival Ateneo de Manila in their much-awaited return engagement in the opener of the 2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena* (formerly The Arena) in San Juan City.

Bringas’ odyssey to the Green Archers’ camp ended months of speculations of his preferred school, as La Salle, which placed runner-up to Ateneo in last year’s UAAP, makes a serious bid to snatch the title in the premiere pre-season league set to open on April 18.

La Salle and Ateneo clash in the 4 p.m. match after the equally exciting faceoff between last year’s Filoil Flying V tournament runner-up and reigning NCAA champion San Beda College and multi-titled Letran College at 2 p.m.* * *

The UP Maroons and Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers cap the day when they collide at 6:30 p.m in the three-month long tournament backed by Adidas,* Total Phils., Inc., SMART Sports, CDO, Pioneer Insurance, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Filoil, Flying V, Astaro/Karspersky, Douwe Egberts, Brothers Burger, Shell, Gourmet Coffee, Cecon/Surbex, Kolin/Syntax, The Philippine Star, Standard Chartered, Jaycees, V-Star, V-8, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and Insular.

Bringas, together with mainstays Maui Villanueva, Joshua Webb, Peejay Barua, Hyram Bagatsing, James Mangahas, Bader Malabes and LA Revilla, headlines a La Salle team which also boasts of five former RP Youth players against an intact Ateneo team brimming with talent from last year’s championship.

With only Chris Tiu and Yuri Escueta gone from the line-up, the Blue Eagles remain a formidable opponent at the paint with the presence of Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nico Salva, Kirk Long and Justin Chua and open-court specialists Jai Reyes, Michael Baldos, Eric Salamat, Raymond Austria and former juniors MVP Juami Tiongson.

There’s also Ryan Buenafe, Bringas’ teammate in the San Sebastian Stags’ title run in the juniors, who will go up against his former teammate in a highly anticipated duel.

The Red Lions, meanwhile, will parade a big addition to their lineup in Sudan Daniels, who is tapped to fill the gap left by former MVP Sam Ekwe.

Daniels, a lean 6-7 center, will pose some problems for the Knights, who will rely on their trademark pressing defense and run-and-gun game to neutralize the Lions’ edge at the paint.

Meanwhile, the La Salle-Ateneo opener will be aired over IBC Channel 13 at 7-9 p.m. while the opening ceremony and the La Salle-Ateneo match will be shown at the Makisig Channel at 5-9 p.m.

Checked with AP.com Fil Oil has not yet cleared with DLSU regarding Bringas playing for the Archers. As for Alas, it is still chismis. So nothing is certain yet. According to the mentioned forum, this press release could have been started by the blue side. Remember Philippine Star is owned by Pangilinan a known Ateneo supporter. Wether true or not abangan na lang natin ang susunod na kabanata.

Only Banal, Manguera, and Torres are the recruits enrolled in DLSU. It's quite sad that those articles were written without checking and doing any verification with any of the DLSU officials.

I have to say that all of those are pure speculation for now.

Bringas makes debut in Filoil hoops

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:22:00 04/12/2009

MANILA, Philippines – One of the prized rookies in the UAAP gets an early taste of the country’s fiercest basketball rivalry – and what it feels to play opposite a former teammate with whom he has won titles before.

Arvie Bringas heads for an interesting debut with La Salle when the Green Archers battle arch rival Ateneo Blue Eagles in the 2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup on April 18 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Bringas, who powered the San Sebastian Staglets to an unbeaten season for a fourth straight NCAA juniors title, will square off against former teammate Ryan Buenafe, who was the Staglets’ main man in the first three of those four titles.

The Ateneo-La Salle showdown will kick off at 4 p.m., right after the 1 p.m. opening ceremony and the 2 p.m. tussle between NCAA champion San Beda and Letran.

NCAA runner-up Jose Rizal University and University of the Philippines will cap the heavy three-game bill at 6:30 p.m.

Buenafe had a sensational season by winning the Rookie of the Year plum during Ateneo’s UAAP championship run last year.

And Bringas will try to duplicate that feat with the Archers, who will be led by veterans Peejay Barua and James Mangahas. La Salle lost to Ateneo in last year’s UAAP Finals.

Bringas, an athletic 6-foot-5 cager, also heads a La Salle recruitment coup that boasts five former RP youth standouts.

^^ to be fair to ateneo, the press release might have been stirred up by Fil Oil's PR company itself.. a company big enough that even the papers were confident to not even double check its validity.

now regarding the press release, its pure marketing BS for an opening day sellout. any time you place keywords like "bringas" and "DLSU" in the title, and talk about the ateneo-lasalle rivalry in it, you are bound to stir some sh!t up... so in that sense, i guess the release was successful.. it kept people in various forums talking about it and it placed fil oil right smack in the spotlight... ;D

The Bringas story was carried not just by Phil Star but by a couple of other papers that I'm sure are not owned by MVP. I agree with arkuo14, it appears to be a press release written by FilOil itself to hype the opening day games.

Too bad. That would've made the whole tournament even more interesting (hint, hint).

I think doing away with residency rules will allow teams to field promising players which would otherwise not be seen in the UAAP for years.

Lasalle was behind at the end of every quarter except for the one that mattered most. Arvie Bringas, the controversial forward out of the mighty San Sebastian Staglets program, finally showed up in a Lasalle uniform and led the Green Archers to a heart-stopping 67 - 66 victory over tough University of the Philippines.

Fil-Am sensation Mike Silungan looked ready to upstage the Bringas debut as he scored 12 of UP's first 14 points. Lasalle however went to their dreaded fullcourt press and disrupted the UP offense, preventing the Fighting Maroons from breaking away, in a game that saw no double-digit leads.

Silungan however was held to only one point in the payoff fourth period even as Bringas scored key baskets for the green and white. Another Arvie, Braganza of UP, had one last crack to try and get the W for the maroon and teal but just couldn't get a good shot.

Silungan led all scorers with 26 points including four treys, Bringas led Lasalle with 12 points.

In the second game Ateneo turned it up just enough in the end-game to keep St Benilde at bay 76 - 65. Down 32-34 at the half, the Blue Eagles leaned on veterans Eric Salamat from long range and Kirk Long slashing in for key baskets in the pivotal third period to gain a bit of separation from the Blazers.

In the fourth period, reigning UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini was called for an unsportsmanlike foul when he elbowed St Benilde center Robbie Manalac in a box out scuffle. Blazer swingman Chuck Dalanon as usual tried to get a piece of the action but was restrained by cooler heads.

Veteran Jeff Morial nailed a trey to make it 63-61 but the Blazers muffed a couple of trips to the foul line that could have changed the outcome.

Al-Hussaini had 19 points for Ateneo while Morial led all scorers with 20. Another veteran guard, Gelo Montecastro, showed up in street clothes and did not play for St Benilde. Ateneo did without UAAP Season 71 ROY Ryan Buenafe and head coach Norman Black.

In the last game of the day San Beda traipsed through the first half and then totally shocked and awed Mapua Tech iin the second half to come away with the 30-plus point victory. Veterans JR Tecson, Garvo Lanete, Dave Marcelo, JR Taganas and newcomer Maher Villahermosa all pulled together in the second half for the big win.

Martin Reyes of UP came from the La Salle-Zobel Juniors champion team of 2005. It'll be his 4th year with the Maroons next season.

The Martin Reyes from La Salle-Greenhills will be a rookie for DLSU if he makes the final cut for UAAP Season 72.
