NCAA: New SSC coach Agustin eyes semis stint for Stags
03/06/2009 | 05:56 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Four months after taking over San Sebastian College’s (SSC) coaching chores from Jorge Gallent, Renato “Ato" Agustin is already aiming a Final Four stint for the Stags in the coming National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) basketball tournament.

The NCAA’s 85th season opens in July with the defending champion San Beda Red Lions aiming to win its fourth straight title, which was last accomplished by the Stags from 1993 to 1996.

“Wala akong maipapangako, pero target namin na pumasok sa Final Four kasi four years nang hindi umaabot ng Final Four ang Baste (I can not promise anything but we are targeting the Final Four since it has already been four years since San Sebastian entered the semifinals)," said Agustin, who is currently one of the city councilors in San Fernando City in Pampanga.

“Isa pa, ayaw ko namang ma-pressure agad ang mga bata kaya unti-unti lang muna. Pag nandun na kami saka na kami maghahangad ng mas mataas (I also don’t want to pressure the players. We are going to aim higher once we made it to the semis)," added the former PBA MVP.

Agustin was introduced as the Stags’ new coach last November after Gallent resigned due to his commitment with Harbour Centre in the Philippine Basketball League.

Agustin, after assuming the coaching post, readily coordinated with Stags new team manager Lubao town Mayor Dennis Pineda for their planned team build-up. “Mayroon kasing basketball camp si Mayor Pineda at nagpapasalamat naman ako dahil binigyan n’ya kami ng players na puwedeng ma-line-up this year at makatulong sa team (Mayor Pineda has a basketball camp. We are also thankful for him since he game us players that could play and help the team this year)."

Agustin said four or five players from Pampanga may be lined-up for San Sebastian this year where he expects those chosen to add more height to the Stags.

“Hindi na lang kasi talent at skills ang laban kundi talagang palakihan kaya baka magdagdag kami ng height pero hindi import, imported lang galing Pampanga (Talent and skills alone does not make a team, you also need height. We are going to add tall players but not import, imported from Pampanga)," joked Agustin.

Agustin together with assistant coach Allan Trinidad, are planning to make the first cut for Stags in April. “By April, pipili kami ng 20 na ila-line-up namin para sa tournament ng Fil-Oil tapos dun na kami kukuha ng magiging team namin sa NCAA (We are going to pick 20 players that we will use for the Fil-Oil tournament in April and from there we will choose the NCAA team)."

But even without a final line-up, the Stags team that is competing in the ongoing Fr. Martin Cup is performing above expectations. Proof that Agustin is doing well as the Stags’ new mentor.

Right color but wrong school. It was FEU and not DLSU that swept their own bracket just like Baste. JRU team A and B are the other teams that made the semis.

coach ato is optimistic about reviving the long lost glory of baste in college hoops.

now this year will be a crucial year for the ssc-r in the ncaa.

1. can the stags defend their record as the only ncaa school with a record of 4 straight?
2. can the staglets win their 5th straight championship to tied a record with the red robins?
3. can the lady stags win their 5th straight ncaa title to tie with it's own school record in the ncaa?

good luck to their campaign this year.

Nang ihayag na si Agustin ang hahawak sa Stags, my initial reaction was this will be a long season for the Stags. With the departure of Ballesteros and Viray, the roster will be without the best players in the league at their position. Then, eto, nag-appoint ng bagitong coach.

Pero may katangian itong si Agustin na napansin ko sa laro ng SSC-R kontra SBC. This man knows his limitations and will solicit all help to make Baste a winner.

Kahapon, biglang magkatabi na sila sa bench ni Raymond Valenzona. Valenzona is the coach responsible for the the 4-peat of the Staglets. In previous games, Valenzona will be at the far end. But in yesterday's game, he and his Staglets assistant (sorry at di nakalimutan ko ang pangalan...) were very much involved in calling the attention of the Baste players on what to do.

These SSC-R line is not that talented as to make it pleasing to watch. Rookies Pascual ang Abueva (?) will be just that to me until they deliver in actual NCAA games. Pero yung makita ko yung inter-action ng coaching staff, pwedeng kapulutan ng aral ng ibang baguhan coaches.

I think kung basehan lang ng talent. JRU ang barometer. Wala ng iba. ;) Sila ang may pinaka intact na line up from last year. +Joe Etame. No questions about that. And yes, iba ang NCAA games dahil mas matindi ang pressure, pero lahat naman ng team kasama dun, what I mean is, hindi lang Baste ang maprepressure, kasi madaming rookies ngayon(Hindi lang Baste). Yung iba nga eh 2nd stringer lang noon, pero ngayon Season sa kanila pa mapapasa yung katagang "Main Man", A very good example is Jimbo Aquino. And yes, lahat tayo excited na sa NCAA Season. Kumbaga, etong mga Pre Season Tourneys na to, parang practice lang. Pwede kang kumuha ng experience. ;D

BRAVO BASTE!!! 8)

sir medyo bagito pa talaga si coach ato sa coaching but every game he is improving and with the help of coach turo in the background i know everything will turn out fine. but one thing that i like about coach ato is that he is a damn good motivator with his players. something that the other young coaches doesn't have.

Stags focus on defense to get to Final Four

By Izah Morales

MANILA, Philippines – The San Sebastian Stags are counting on defense to emerge among the top teams in the next NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association) season.

“We are really focused on defense this time. If we play good defense, our offense will likewise be good,” said coach Renato “Ato” Agustin in Filipino.

The Stags last entered the Final Four in season 81 (2005-2006), then hosted by Letran.

“It’s been a while (since we entered the Final Four) so that’s really our goal this coming season,” said Agustin, who replaced Jorge Gallent at the helm in November last year

San Sebastian fans will miss center Jason Ballesteros, shooting guard Jim Viray, power forward Froilan Saquillo and point guard Ian Delgado.

Ballesteros, who made it to the NCAA mythical team last season, is now playing for Bacchus while Viray is now with Licealiz Hair Doctors in the Philippine Basketball League.

Nonetheless, Agustin remains confident as San Sebastian is still powered by shooting guard Jimbo Aquino, center Gilbert Bulawan, point guard Pamboy Raymundo, point guard Raymond Maconocido and veteran players Anthony Bringas and Anthony Del Rio.

The Stags are also bringing in rookies from Pampanga, coincidentally the home province of Coach Ato.

Among them is Ian Sangalang, who is from Lubao Institute and a member of the RP Youth Team.

“They have much better confidence in themselves right now,” Agustin said, referring to the current crop of players for Baste. “Also, they enjoy playing the game more than before.”

San Sebastian currently holds 11 championship titles since it joined the NCAA in 1969.

Stags maul Altas

Rookie-laden San Sebastian pummeled Perpetual Help, 76-64, in a non-televised match to complete the three-day opener of the 85th NCAA season at the Araneta Coliseum.

Hoping to improve on their fifth place showing last season, the Stags had an easy time against the Altas led by 24 points at one point behind veterans Jimbo Aquino and Gilbert Bulawan.

Aquino, tasked to fill up the void left by national team standout Jason Ballesteros and Jim Viray, led the Recto-based dribblers with 20 points off four triples with Bulawan adding 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.

San Sebastian avenged last year's opening day loss to Perpetual Help after blowing a double-digit lead while giving Ato Agustin his first win as the team's new head coach.

Agustin, who won the 1992 PBA Most Valuable Player as a player for San Miguel Beer, took over the reigns following the resignation of Jorge Gallent.

"We played well today at sana ma-maintain namin yung same type of play sa mga susunod na laro," said Agustin.

Shooter Jonathan Semira, point guard Raymond Maconocido and first-year big man Ian Sangalang chipped in nine points each.

Southpaw guard Chrisper Elorpe led the Las Pinas-based dribblers with 19 points, three rebounds, six assists and two steals despite turning the ball over five times. Raffy Ynion had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds while John Galabin finished with 10 points.

Perpetual muffed 16 of 21 shots from beyond the arc and shot 36 percent from the field.

The scores:

San Sebastian 76 - Aquino 20, Bulawan 15, Semira 9, Sangalang 9, Maconocido 9, Raymundo 5, Abueva 4, Najorda 4, Pascual 1, Del Rio 0.

Perpetual Help 64 - Elorpe 19, Ynion 16, Galabin 11, Salanga 6, Salvado 3, Hainga 3, Carrullo 3, Liaz 2, Vivero 1, Rono 0, Sicat 0.

Quarters: 26-13; 51-27; 64-48; 76-64.

A reminder to the thugs Stags of Baste for their coming game against the Red Lions (NB: posted news item is in Pilipino so they can readily understand it):

Bagong alituntunin sa NCAA ipatutupad sa Season 85
Updated June 16, 2009 12:00 AM

“We will not tolerate dirty players in this league, they would be immediately ejected if we find them intentionally doing it,” wika ni del Rosario, “There’s nothing wrong with being physical, but playing dirty is a different thing,” dagdag pa nito.

Stags defang Lions, snatch lead

MANILA -- As a player, Ato “The Atom Bomb” Agustin made a killing with his offense. As a coach, he shifts to defense now.

Transforming his team to a mean, defense-oriented machine, San Sebastian shell-shocked reigning three-peat champion San Beda, 83-77, Wednesday to book its second straight victory in Season 85 of the NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

And though Jimbo Aquino torched the Lions with a season-high 26 points, it was defense that spelled the difference for the Golden Stags, who remain unbeaten in two starts.

San Sebastian took San Beda out of its comfort zone with a punishing interior defense that made life difficult for 6’8” American Sudan Daniels, who was limited to only five attempts connecting on four of them to finish with 11 points.

Spearheaded by 6’6” rookie Ian Sangalang and Gilbert Bulawan, the Stags surprisingly beat the taller, bigger Lions in the rebounds department plucking 52 against the latter's 46 .

Sangalang, a former RP youth hotshot, and Bulawan accounted for 24 caroms while firing 26 points and blocking four shots combined.

“I told my players to play tough defense by pushing their big men outside, our plan worked,” said Agustin, a former PBA MVP known for his streak shooting ways.

The Stags are now 4-1 (win-loss) against the Lions this year that included three triumphs in the pre-season.

Their one and only loss came in the championship of the Nike Summer League where the Lions reigned supreme.

It’s all forgotten now.

After trailing San Beda in the first three quarters, Aquino, who assumed the leadership role following the departure of last year’s top guns Jason Ballesteros and Jim Viray, unleashed a 12-point barrage that silenced the Lions in the final canto.

It was four of the total six triples drained by someone who is fast turning into a prototype of the Atom Bomb of old—a mean scoring machine.

“I keep reminding him to play decoy because I know he would attract defense,” said Agustin of Aquino. “But I also told him to shoot if he’s free so I’m not surprised if he made the big shots.”

Jimbo Aquino, SSC-R, NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week (1)
NCAA Press Corps, Sat, Jul 4, 2009

The NCAA Press Corps picked San Sebastian sharp shooter Jimbo Aquino as its ACCEL/Fil-Oil Player of the Week after powering the Stags to the early share of the lead in Season 85.

Aquino, who has taken the leadership cudgels from last year's leaders Jason Ballesteros and Jim Viray, averaged 23 points in wins over Perpetual Help and reigning three-peat champion San Beda the past week.

During that stretch, Aquino buried a whopping 10 of the 13 triples he attempted including six in a masterful shock 83-77 win over the heavily favored Lions Monday that sent them atop the heap along with last year's runner-up Jose Rizal, St. Benilde and guest team Arellano U on 2-0 (win-loss) slates.

It was enough to gain the nod of the group composed of the reporters from the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids as its first recipient of the award presented by ACCEL and Fil-Oil.

Aquino quickly thanked his new coach former PBA MVP Renato "The Atom Bomb" Agustin for the confidence he showed in him.

"I have so much confidence this year because of the new system of coach (Agustin)," said the soft-spoken Aquino, a 23-year-old native of Bamban, Tarlac.

Agustin, one the finest shooters that PBA has produced, felt nothing but impressed.

"He's one of the hardest worker of the team, he's the team leader," said Agustin, whose charges walloped the Altas, 76-64, in last week's opener at the Big Dome.

Aquino bested the likes of Jose Rizal's James Sena, Arellano's Giorgio Ciriacruz and St. Benilde's Jeff Morial for the weekly plum sponsored by ACCEL, a leading Filipino-based shoe and sports apparel, and Fil-Oil.

Stags rip Generals

San Sebastian went to its veterans when some of its bench players failed to deliver as it turned back a pesky Emilio Aguinaldo, 87-73, yesterday to seize a share of the lead with Jose Rizal in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Although Calvin Abueva and Pamboy Raymundo led the team with 17 and 16 points, it was leader Jimbo Aquino who saved the day for the Stags by draining eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to seal their fourth win in row.

San Sebastian coach Ato Agustin later on admitted he really intentionally used his second and third stringers to get some experience that would benefit them going into tougher games.

"Without belittling EAC, I really intended to experiment with my new guys," said Agustin, who used a total of 15 players or four or five more than he usually does in their first three outings.

"I'm glad my veteran guys made the big plays in the end," added the former PBA MVP.

Still fresh from an eight-day break, the Stags came into the game with a lot of energy and after a series of blistering runs, they erected a 45-29 lead that they nurtured to go into the break still comfortably ahead, 49-37. And the experiment began.

Agustin, knowing that its going to be a long season ahead, dug deep into his bench and sent in seldom-used players hoping they could hold the forth until the final canto.

It backfired as the Generals, itching to notch their first win in the league after dropping their first three outings, unloaded a mighty run that saw them inching closer at 60-63 at the end of the third canto.

Back-to-back triples by Raymond Maconocido and Ronald Pascual lit a run that Aquino presided with an eight-point barrage to blow the game out of reach.

EAC, led by Argel Mendoza's 20 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals, fell to its fourth straight defeat.

Abueva, despite being small, is a beast on the boards. Getting a lot of offensive rebounds ang getting a lot of garbage points.

Stags rip Bombers, seize top spot
NCAA Press Release, Tue, Aug 4, 2009 ;)

In juniors’ action, Jose Rizal stunned four-peat champion San Sebastian, 93-87, while Perpetual Help downed Mapua, 97-89, to boost their respective Final Four stocks.

San Sebastian whipped up a big third quarter storm as it downed last year’s runner-up Jose Rizal, 91-76, yesterday to seize the solo lead in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Jimbo Aquino spewed 23 points including seven in the fourth quarter that quashed a desperation rally by the Bombers before he fouled out as the Stags stretched its amazing streak to seven to seize the solo lead.

“He’s really a clutch performer but if he could nurse his fouls a little bit, he’ll be more dangerous,” said San Sebastian coach Ato Agustin, who celebrated his 46th birthday Saturday.

San Sebastian also put the lid on the usually prolific John Wilson, who was limited to just nine points on a woeful three-of-13 shooting clip.

Wilson, who came into this game tied with Aquino as the league’s scoring leaders with an average of 20.8 points a match, was taken out of his comfort zone and even fouled out as early as more than three minutes to go.

“Our game plan was really to stop (John) Wilson and we did a great job on him,” said Agustin, a former PBA MVP.

Pamboy Raymundo scattered 17 points while rookie beanpole Ian Sangalang had an all-around performance of 14 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist to help in the cause.

The Bombers, led by Mark Cagoco’s 17 points and James Sena’s 14, fell in a tie with the four-peat seeking San Beda Lions on 6-1 slates.

Jimbo Aquino, SSC-R, NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week (6)
NCAA Press Corps, Sat, Aug 8, 200 ;)

Jimbo Aquino showed he's the heart and soul of San Sebastian after leading the Stags to its seventh straight NCAA seniors' basketball victory.

Aquino buried 23 points and hauled down seven rebounds in San Sebastian's 91-76 drubbing of erstwhile co-leader and last year's runnerup Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers last Monday, enough to seal him his second ACCEL/Fil-Oil NCAA Player of the Week Player of the Week honor.

With Aquino's consistent 21-point average per game, San Sebastian managed to climb up to solo lead and remained the only unscathed team this season with a 7-0 win-loss record.

"He gave another clutch performance for the team and again proved his leadership," said Stags rookie coach Ato Agustin of the 23-year old native of Bamban, Tarlac.

Aquino, the first player to collect two NCAA POW honors this year, was the inaugural recipient of the award five weeks back when he led the Stags to it's first two wins this season including a shocker against the defending three-time champion San Beda Red Lions.

Against JRU, Aquino drained 14 of his total output in the first two quarters to pace San Sebastian and even outscored his fiercest scoring rival, Heavy Bomber John Wilson, by 14 markers the whole game.

Still Agustin admitted that there were some flaws that Aquino, was the first recipient of the plum backed by ACCEL and FilOil should address.

"The only problem with Jimbo especially when the crowd is cheering him on, he gets a little bit carried away," Agustin added about his ward, who suffered his first disqualification after committing his fifth foul late in the fourth. "I told him that he's our gunner and he has to control his fouls because the team needs him inside the court. He should adjust and play smart."

Aquino topped the likes of San Beda hot shots Garvo Lanete and Sudan Daniel and Letran's RJ Jazul for the weekly plum given by a group sports scribes from the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids covering the beat.

Stags edge Knights, sweep 1st round
NCAA Press Release, Sat, Aug 15, 2009 ;)

In juniors’ play, Jarelan Tampus and Archie Inigo combined for 40 points while Glenn Khobuntin had 16 points and 18 rebounds to power Letran to an 87-79 win over reigning four-peat titlist San Sebastian and a nine-game sweep of the first round.

San Sebastian went to transferee Ronald Pascual and its defense in the fourth quarter as it repulsed a pesky Letran, 77-74, yesterday to complete a historic nine-game sweep of the first round in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The athletic Pascual, who took a one-year residency after leaving Adamson, poured in 10 of his 17 points in the final canto and then the Stags made crucial stops in the dying seconds to seal the Stags an immaculate 9-0 record.

“He’s stepped up big that’s why I started him,” said San Sebastian coach Ato Agustin of the 6’3” Pascual. “It also helped that we made key stops in the end.”

Ian Sangalang had 12 points and 11 boards while Jimbo Aquino and Raymond Maconocido chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, to help in the cause.

Jaypee Belencion, Rey Guevarra and rookie Kevin Alas fired 18, 16 and 14 points but skipper RJ Jazul was held to his league worst nine points after missing three of the 15 shots he took.

The biggest misses came in the stretch when he muffed a pair of potential game-tying triples including one with seconds to go that sent the Stags into frantic celebration at center court.

The Knights fell to joint fourth place with Chiefs on 5-4 cards.

Stags ambush Generals, now 12-0
(inboundpass.com) ;)

SAN SEBASTIAN College-Recoletos couldn’t have sent a louder message to the rest of the NCAA.

The Stags posted the biggest winning margin of Season 85 with a 109-63 massacre of Emilio Aguinaldo College at the Filoil Flying V Arena last September 2.

Rookie Ian Sangalang exploited EAC’s lack of size with a career-best 19 points and 12 rebounds in just 24 minutes while supporting the ever-reliable Jimbo Aquino, who registered a team-high 22 points. Coach Ato Agustin’s troops showed no signs of rust despite playing their first game in 11 days and moved the ball efficiently en route to 20 assists, nine of which were accounted for by Pamboy Raymundo.

San Sebastian, incidentally the last team to sweep an elimination round back in 1997, got going in the second quarter with Aquino and Calvin Abueva shouldering the scoring load. The Recto unit never looked back as it collared a season-best 62 rebounds. Its winning margin eclipsed the previous high of 38, which was posted by Mapua Institute of Technology last July 10 via a 101-63 demolition of Angeles University Foundation.

Argel Mendoza led EAC, which is now 3-10, with 30 points, 22 coming in the second half, while leading rebounder Claude Cubo hauled down 11 boards.

Agustin, the first-ever rookie coach in league history to capture his opening 12 games, said, “We played really well today on both sides of the court. I hope we could sustain this in our next games. The boys are relaxed because of the long break. I gave them the chance to have a two-day break before we had a hard practice a week before our actual game. Right now, we just want to take it one game at a time. I really can’t tell yet if we are capable of a sweep. Maybe after clinching out 16th win, that’s when we’ll start considering it. [On Aquino] I constantly remind him that he can’t always be the scorer. He should also learn to pass the ball and collar those rebounds because it’s a bonus for him. His teammates look up to him as their leader.”

The scores:

San Sebastian 109 – Aquino 22, Najorda 20, Sangalang 19, Abueva 17, Semira 9, Raymundo 7, Pascual 6, del Rio 4, Maconocido 3, Bulawan 2.

EAC 63 – Mendoza 30, Santos 9, R. Yaya 8, Cubo 8, Jabaybay 4, Chiong 4, L. Yaya 0, Sablan 0, Pingol 0, Liwag 0, Diolanto 0, del Rosario 0.

Quarter scores: 18-13, 44-28, 71-48, 109-63.

Superb Stags scalp Chiefs, march to historic 15-0 mark
by Mia Domingo (inboundpass.com) ;)

SAN SEBASTIAN College-Recoletos set a new mark of perfection with its 15th straight win after defeating Arellano University, 100-66 in Season 85 of the NCAA at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last September 21.

Ian Sangalang, at 6-foot-6, stood head and shoulders above the rest with a career-high 28 points on 13-of-19 shooting. The rookie, a former Palarong Pambansa and RP Youth standout, ripped apart Arellano’s interior all by himself to lead the Stags to that unprecedented benchmark of winning.

With the Stags very much in control of the game from tipoff, Sangalang asserted his presence in the first period, scoring 12 points. The Chiefs, already out of the running for a Final Four spot, looked sluggish and lethargic as San Sebastian ran wild offensively all game. The Recto unit won the battle of the boards in style, 47-24, while ironically outrunning the normally fast-paced Legarda quintet by scoring 12 more fastbreak points, 20-8.

Jimbo Aquino, a contender for the Most Valuable Player plum this season, scored 21 points, hauled down a career-best 15 boards and dished out five assists. Gio Ciriacruz squeezed in 21 points and seven boards to lead the Chiefs, who fell to 7-9.

With barely 3 weeks left in the elimination round, the Stags are just three games away from completing a double-round elimination sweep that will give them an outright finals berth. The last time the Stags reached that stage was in 2003 when they paraded the likes of Leo Najorda, Mark Macapagal, Paul Reguera, Nicole Uy and Chris Baluyot before losing to Letran. Their last championship came a year before that.

“I’m happy because the boys played effective and team basketball today. I saw their will to win not just in the actual game but even during practice. They played with a different level of intensity. This is an important game because this handed us a record that will go down the history books of the NCAA. After this game and on Friday [against Letran], we’ll aim for the sweep. We have to go through the eye of the needle first in our game against Letran. [On Sangalang] He’s brilliant even at a young age. He has this ability to adapt to certain situations where he does not appear too mechanical. He comes up with an alternative option if the opponent reads the play,” rookie head coach Ato Agustin of San Sebastian said.

The scores:

San Sebastian 100 – Sangalang 28, Aquino 21, Maconocido 14, Abueva 14, Maiquez 7, del Rio 5, Raymundo 4, Najorda 4, Semira 2, Bulawan 1, E. Gatchalian 0.

Arellano 66 – G. Ciriacruz 21, Rivera 14, Celada 11, I. Ciriacruz 8, Tayongtong 3, Miranda 3, Salcedo 2, Dimla 2, Anquilo 2, Reducto 0, Apostol 0, Agustin 0.

Quarter scores: 25-15, 52-32, 75-44, 100-66.

Jimbo Aquino was a picture of frustration despite having his usual numbers, no thanks to the Letran defenders assigned to hound him (Guevarra, Gutilban, Belencion, etc.). Ian Sangalang and the rest of the team were simply out of sync.

Good game pa rin by the Stags. Forget about the unachieved sweep and bawi na lang kayo sa next games.

One team wanted to win more badly today, and they might just wind up as the new champions of the NCAA. San Sebastian went to their version of the ground-and-pound game to outlast reigning champion San Beda 72 - 68 in a classic double overtime meat grinder.

Getting off to a good start, the Golden Stags went up 21-16 at the end of the first period and never really looked back for most of regulation. King Stag Jimbo Aquino had a fiery first half for the Stags shooting 11 points, even as rookies Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva put in quality minutes.

San Sebastian seemed to have the game well in hand in regulation, still up 53-47 with still three minutes left. SAn Beda however turned up the defensive pressure while Borgie Hermida went on a mini-run of his own. A Rome Dela Rosa jumper from the corner knotted the count at 53-all to send the game into the first overtime.

In a relentless battle of attrition, the Stags once again seemed ready to wrap everything up as Aquino, Sangalang and Pamboy Raymundo took turns delivering key baskets. Relentless rebounding by Abueva and Gilbert Bulawan gave San Sebastian precious extra possessions.

Hermida and Bam Gamalinda however hit some key buckets for the Red Lions as well. With American import Sudan Daniel effectively shut down by the Stags defense, Gamalinda and Hermida had to look for baskets themselves. Hermida tied the count with a daring drive to force the second overtime.

In the end however, San Beda just couldn't get the breaks while San Sebastian got enough breaks from the freethrow line to seal the deal. Abueva nailed two pressure freethrows with only six seconds and change left in the second extension to ice the game and peg the final count.

Aquino led all scorers with 24 points and completed a double-double with 12 rebounds, while Abueva had 10 points and an astounding 23 rebounds against the much bigger San Beda frontline.

Hermida, Gamalinda, Daniel and Garvo Lanete had 11 points each but no one was a clear game leader for the Red Lions today, something critical to any championship.

"We just played good but basic defense against Sudan, basically we did not want San Beda to get their high-low game going with him," said victorious coach Ato Agustin. "All the credit goes to the players, especially Calvin and Jimbo, hopefully we can finish this on Saturday," he added.

'San ba galing ang Abueva na iyan? Super galing.'

Imagine a rookie, going up against a veteran frontline, with an import, in the first game of the finals, and he got 23 rebounds?

This kid has a very, very bright future ahead of him.

San Sebastian held three-time champion San Beda to a mere five freethrows in the fourth quarter to pull a huge upset and win their first NCAA crown in seven years 76 - 61.

congrats, basté! one could say the breaks of the game were in their favor, but the red lions also had their chances. they just couldn't score on those chances.

it may already sound like a cliché the way it's been thrown around, but the red lions have nothing to be ashamed of. a three-peat is something many teams can only dream about, but they did it. congrats to them for at least having the chance to defend their title, albeit unsuccessfully.

congrats once again, stags! you will be the host of season 86, and i'm certain you will defend your title with the same hunger the red lions defended theirs for 2 consecutive years.

bravo, basté!

(cross-posted in the NCAA sub-forum "season 85 finals" thread)

adding: in particular, congrats to coach ato agustin! unbelievable achievement for a rookie coach! i've been a longtime admirer of you since your san miguel days, and i'm glad you are doing more than your fair share in developing the country's young talents in this great game. congrats once again!

San Sebastian Stags dethrone Lions, captures NCAA title
NCAA Press Release, Sun, Oct 25, 2009

http://www.ncaa.org.ph/season85/images/news/482a.jpg

San Sebastian shut down San Beda in the fourth quarter as it carved out a masterful 76-61 come-from-behind victory yesterday to clinch its first title in seven years in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at the packed Araneta Coliseum.

Jimbo Aquino spewed 15 of his 16 points in the second half including 10 in the fourth quarter before being taken out late in the game after he hurt a knee but it was the defence of the Stags in the fourth quarter that spelled the difference.

Trailing almost all throughout the match, San Sebastian toughened up its defence in the final period by holding San Beda, champion the last three seasons, to just five fouls shots and no field goals that sealed the former its first title in seven seasons and 12th overall, two behind its recent victim.

It also marked the third straight time that the Stags beat the Lions in the finals since the former beat the latter in the championship series of 1996 and 1997.

The Stags were already celebrating as early as two minutes remaining in the game after leading 69-58 and the Lions missing almost every shot they attempted from the field and the foul line.

The Lions, consoled by legions of their red-clad fans including league president and San Beda rector Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB, were on the other side, some stunned while most of them crying for their failure to win the school their first ever four-peat feat.

“I’m happy we won on my first year,” said Ato Agustin, who duplicated the feat accomplished by San Beda mentor Frankie Lim when he steered the Lions to the 2007 title on his rookie season.

Aquino, who spewed 24 points in a 72-68 triumph in Thursday’s opener, was adjudged the Finals MVP, which came as a reprieve after he was stripped of a place in the Mythical Five for a disqualification foul he incurred in an elimination round loss, ironically against San Beda.

“It’s really, really sweet,” said the soft-spoken team captain, playing his fifth and last season.

Gilbert Bulawan and Ronald Pascual scattered 15 and 12 points, respectively, while John Raymundo had 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds to help the cause.

Calvin Abueva, who had a monster effort in Game One with 10 points, 23 boards and five blocks, was hobbled by foul trouble but still finished with five points including a clutch tip in a crucial run in the fourth quarter.

Lim, for his part, was all praise on the Stags.

“I have to give it to coach Ato (Agustin) and the Stags, they are not expected to be in the finals and they wiped us out,” said Lim, who suffered his first finals loss since helping win the Mendiola-based school to the last two of its three-peat feat.

The scores:

San Sebastian 76- Aquino 16, Bulawan 15, Pascual 12, Raymundo 11, Najorda 5, Abueva 5, Gatchalian 4, del Rio 3, Sangalang 2, Maconocido 2, Semira 1
San Beda 61- Lanete 16, Pascual 11, Tecson 10, Caram 6, Marcelo 6, Daniel 4, Hermida 4, Gamalinda 2, dela Rosa 2, Taganas 0, Tirona 0
Quarterscores: 14-19; 28-38; 54-56; 61-76

RED BLOOD TURNS INTO GOLD!!!

Congrats Baste!

Well deserved win!

Ganda nung 4th quarter run! 5 points lang naproduce nila!

Maganda naman talaga yung game e kaya lang sinira yun ng San Beda! Very classy to the highest level ng pagkawalang modo! Squatter cheer na naman? What for? Defensive mechanism?! Dahil patalo na kayo?! That was really uncalled for! Kitang kita naman sa replay hindi sinasadya ni Pamboy yung elbow! Kung makareact kayo parang gusto niyo ng pumatay ng tao! And ang lutong ng mga MURA niyo! Very classy! A real Bedan trait! And that squatter cheer! You guys have a lot of guts to use that jeer on us when in fact you guys act like one or worst than a SQUATTER! Nambabato ng kung ano ano sa court! Tama ba naman yun? Mga walang modo! Just remember guys you guys represent your school! The act that you've shown yesterday on national TV just shows how arrogant and disrespectful you are! It's just a shame on San Beda being a catholic school and this?! These are the kinds of attitude your students and alumni have?! Is this the value that San Beda is instilling to their students and alumni! SHAME!

I suggest you polish your curriculum in GOOD MORAL AND RIGHT CONDUCT para naman kahit man lang ang current students niyo maturuan niyo ng tamang asal! Yung alumni niyo forget about it! HOPELESS CASE na yan!

Congrats ulit sa Baste!

BRAVO BASTE! :)

Is that so?! If telling the truth means banishment then so be it!

You can request for my banishment all you want! I wouldn't care less!

I just reacted that way dahil hindi ko nagustuhan ang ginawa nila. You can't expect me to thank me for what they did!

Congrats to the STAGS. Job well done.

Pusongbaste:

That Abueva guy is one heck of a player. At the same time, a true sportsman. During the game, he would push, shove, shout at, and taunt the Red Lions and our crowd. After the game, handshakes and even hugs to Jake Pascual(as in chessy moment), to show that he is MAGNANIMOUS in victory.

Kudos for setting an example.

The Bedan crowd right after the game, gave a round of applause to the Baste community(Right after you sung your hymn). Showing you guys that we are MAGNANIMOUS in defeat. ano pa ba hinahanap mo?

There is such a word as "GAMEFACE". It's not just a name for this site.

But if you'd continue your path and be all Frazier-esque. Buhay mo yan.

Calvion Abueva is intensity personified in their Finals series against San Beda.

He IMO is the Dennis Rodman of the NCAA doing all the dirty work, defense, rebound and loose balls recovery. Not so much of a scorer but a vital cog in Baste's title run.

San Beda just got the Law of Average syndrome after winning three straight years. You canb sense that its not their year when they score only 5 points in the 4th quarter mostly on free throws.

My wife is very happy, eagerly waiting to buy the Championship Shirt at Olympic Village. ;D

Calma lauds Agustin, SSC Stags
November 17, 2009 07:29 PM Tuesday

ONE of the Philippine Basketball Association’s “25 Greatest Players” paid tribute to the San Sebastian Stags team and most specially to its head coach Ato Agustin for winning the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) senior cage crown over the favored and fourth title-seeking San Beda Red Lions squad recently.

Hector Calma , who was former team captain of the San Miguel Beermen’s 1989 grand slam team and teammate of Agustin in the said squad, said he is happy that the sweet-shooting guard has kept the championship tradition alive even as a rookie coach of the Stags.

“I’ve always seen leadership qualities in Ato even when we were still playing together. So I am not really surprised that he will eventually win his first title as coach,” said Calma, who had Agustin as one of his backups when he was still with the Beermen.

Another SMB grand slam teammate, Samboy Lim added: “Si Ato, players’ player yan. Marunong siya makibagay sa kapwa player kaya sa tingin ko, madali para sa kanya ang maging coach.”

Agustin is the first-ever local member from the San Miguel Beer grand slam team of 1989 to ever win an NCAA seniors cage title.

Calma said he was even more impressed that the Stags had a two-game sweep over the Red Lions who were even bannered by import Sudan Daniel in the best-of-three finals for the collegiate diadem.

“Coaching is a very difficult and demanding trade and that is why I take pride that one of my former San Miguel teammates became successful at it,” Calma said.

The San Sebastian Stags team was led by Finals Most Valuable Player Jimbo Aquino, Calvin Abueva, Gilbert Bulawan ,Ronald Pascual and John Raymundo as the team recorded the league’s longest winning run at 15 early this season.

The Stags won back-to-back titles in the 2001 and 2002 season before ending the long drought after seven years.

In honor of the San Sebastian Stags champion team and coach Ato’s feat, Calma along with some members of the 1989 SMB grand slam team will tender a simple dinner and tribute on Nov. 17 with some former SSC players also attending.
