2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup.

With the coming of the new year, comes significant changes in the Filoil Flying V-sponsored pre-season tournament featuring the country’s finest collegiate basketball stars.

To be known henceforth as the 2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Manny V. Pangilinan Cup in honor of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president and popular sports patron, the tournament will offer more exciting basketball action involving all 15 teams from both the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and more interactive features for the fans, Filoil officials said.

Also, in its bid to streamline its operations, Filioil Flying V chief executive officer Raffy Villavicencio has announced some changes in its personnel, starting with the appointment of sportsman Mandy Ochoa as chairman of Filoil Flying V Sports and popular coliseum announcer Rolly Manlapaz as general manager of the tournament.

Filoil Flying V was the main backer of the recent 2008 Filoil Flying V Philippine Collegiate Champions League, which drew 16 schools which qualified for the “Sweet Sixteen.”

From 16 teams, four teams – La Salle, Ateneo, Letran and San Beda – made it to the Final Four. The Green Archers eventually emerged national champion at the expense of the Blue Eagles, 71-62, during the finals held at the Araneta Coliseum.

Filoil Flying V Sports awarded a total of P850, 000 in scholarship grants to the top four placers, with the lion’s share of P500,000 going to the champion team De La Salle.

“As the title sponsor, we would like to congratulate all the winners in the recent Filoil Flying V Sports Philippine Collegiate Champions League. We would also like to extend our thanks to all the other participants, some of which came from as far as Cebu,” said Villavicencio.

Aside from the top four finishers, the other teams which saw action in the recent tournament were University of the East, Far Eastern U, Mapua, Arellano U, Jose Rizal U, Lyceum, Manuel L. Quezon U, UCN, San Sebastian College-Cavite and Cebu teams University of San Carlos, University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars and University of Visayas.

Meanwhile, the 2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup will open with a twinbill pitting the top four teams in the recent 2008 Filoil Flying V Philippine Collegiate Champions (De La Salle, Ateneo, Letran and San Beda) on April 19 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Other teams set to see action on succeeding playdates, which will be played at The Arena in San Juan, include defending champion UE Warriors, FEU, University of Sto. Tomas, University of the Philippines, Adamson U, National University from the UAAP and NCAA schools Jose Rizal University, Mapua, San Sebastian, College of St. Benilde and Perpetual Help-Dalta System.

To spice up the tournament, a cheer dancing competition will be held among the 15 teams Also, to encourage the youth to engage more in sports, organizers have decided to open the General Admission section of The Arena to San Juan residents, especially the young people, who will be invited through their respective barangay officials

So, are any of the Cebu schools going to be invited this time around, or is this going to be an all-NCR school affair?

Probably none as the reports says that all will be coming from UAAP and NCAA.

It would probably comprised of the 8 UAAP teams and the 7 NCAA teams.

I might be wrong about this, but for those who are not familiar with San Juan Arena, Ringside is just the first (1 or 2) rows. So selling out these seats would be no big deal.

^Opening day venue is Araneta Coliseum.

Hey buddy, the venue for the Fil-Oil tourney will be the Filoil Flying V Arena (aka San Juan Arena) and not at the Araneta Coliseum. I believe all the games of the elimination round will be played there.

But, I agree. With SBC playing archrival Letran in the first game, and age long rivals DLSU playing ADMU on the first day, I don't think Arena can handle the volume of partisans who will watch the games. At least for the opening day with two blockbuster games, they could have tried to get a bigger venue.

Thanks for the correction, Greenarrows. I got the wrong info.

The venue might not be adequate for purposes of the opening games, especially if the Bedans and Letranites collectively decide to stay to watch the 2nd and 3rd games.

Exactly that's why we are hoping and praying that our brother Bedans and Letranites, at least most of them, would be courteous enough to allow the greens and the blues to occupy the Arena's seats for their game.* Again, just wishful thinking.

Don't worry, GA. Only the hardcores will probably stay to watch your game against ADMU. There will be enough seats for all of us, and we will probably just go up to the bleachers.

Isa pang maapektuhan dito ay yung third game, UP-JRU. A lot of UP fans I know have decided not to watch anymore because they know they won't be able to find a place to park before the game. Kung antayin naman nilang umalis ang ADMU-DLSU crowd, baka second half na lang ang maabutan nila by the time they get in.

GH ghopping complex is just a short distance away. Pwede mag-park dun. Did that during that NCAA season of 2 years ago. Parked there, then take a jeep or bus to Arena.

Kung gugustuhin, pwede. ;)

I think the park in front is already finished and could be used for additional parking. Maybe the Arena should look into this.

College basketball rivalry heats up in Filoil caging
04/14/2009 | 04:02 PM
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/156928/College-basketball-rivalry-heats-up-in-Filoil-caging

MANILA, Philippines – Saturday’s opening of the 2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup will feature two of College basketball’s oldest rivalries when four of the country’s top cage programs take center stage at the Filoil Flying V Arena (formerly The Arena) in San Juan City.

Ateneo and San Beda, defending champions in their respective leagues, take on each of their fiercest opponents in a heavy three-game bill that follows the 1:00 p.m. opening ceremony.

The Blue Eagles, the reigning kings of the UAAP, clash with the La Salle Green Archers in the 4:00 p.m. main game right after the 2:00 p.m. contest between incumbent NCAA champion San Beda and Letran.

The San Beda-Letran clash will have the NCAA champion for the last three years, Red Lions, going up against the league’s winningest basketball program, Knights with 13 titles.

But San Beda, runners up to last year’s Filoil Flying V pre-season champion University of the East, will be without three of its starters – Sam Ekwe, Ogie Menor and Pong Escobal.

Ekwe, the Lions’ inside presence, already completed his NCAA playing years while Escobal was drafted by Talk ‘N Text in last year’s PBA rookie draft. Menor, meanwhile, decided to concentrate with his PBL career.

San Beda will have to rely on last year’s second unit with JR Taganas and Borgie Hermida tasked to lead the Red Lions to a fourth straight crown. Out to support them are Jake Pascual, Eric Gamalinda and JR Tecson while taking over Ekwe’s job is six-foot-seven center Sudan Daniels.

“He (Daniels) will have big shoes to fill, so JR (Taganas), Jake (Pascual) and the rest of the guys should step up," said Mike Advani, Frankie Lim’s assistant coach.

Despite Ekwe’s absence, Letran coach Louie Alas remains cautious. “Malalakas ang mga teams dito. Siyempre, teams to beat pa rin ang La Salle at Ateneo, pati na rin San Beda kahit sabihin mo pang wala na si Ekwe (All teams remain strong. The teams to beat are La Salle and Ateneo, even San Beda without Ekwe)," said Alas.

Like the Red Lions, the Knights lost key men to graduation, notably big men Dino Daa and Rey Dangkal, fiery playmaker Kojack Melegrito and outside gunners Regin Ranises and Alvyn Cabonce.

But with RJ Razul and Rey Guevarra providing the leadership, the Knights should be installed as one of the favorites in the tournament. - GMANews.TV

Archers nip Eagles; Lions devour Knights

MANILA, Philippines – La Salle showed Composure in the stretch and turned back bitter rival and UAAP champion Ateneo, 67-65, last night at the start of the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup at the jampacked Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Archers, rebuilding following the departure of JV Casio and Rico Maierhofer, got a huge lift from Bader Malabes and several rookies, whom coach Franz Pumaren said comprises “the best batch” of newcomers since he pulled off a recruitment coup back in 2003.

Three-time NCAA defending champion San Beda also launched its campaign in style, tripping Letran, 85-74, in the first game.

Malabes delivered a three-point play with 19 seconds left that decided the first meeting this year between the two bitter rivals.

Lasalle was behind at the end of every quarter except for the one that mattered most. Arvie Bringas, the controversial forward out of the mighty San Sebastian Staglets program, finally showed up in a Lasalle uniform and led the Green Archers to a heart-stopping 67 - 66 victory over tough University of the Philippines.

Fil-Am sensation Mike Silungan looked ready to upstage the Bringas debut as he scored 12 of UP's first 14 points. Lasalle however went to their dreaded fullcourt press and disrupted the UP offense, preventing the Fighting Maroons from breaking away, in a game that saw no double-digit leads.

Silungan however was held to only one point in the payoff fourth period even as Bringas scored key baskets for the green and white. Another Arvie, Braganza of UP, had one last crack to try and get the W for the maroon and teal but just couldn't get a good shot.

Silungan led all scorers with 26 points including four treys, Bringas led Lasalle with 12 points.

In the second game Ateneo turned it up just enough in the end-game to keep St Benilde at bay 76 - 65. Down 32-34 at the half, the Blue Eagles leaned on veterans Eric Salamat from long range and Kirk Long slashing in for key baskets in the pivotal third period to gain a bit of separation from the Blazers.

In the fourth period, reigning UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini was called for an unsportsmanlike foul when he elbowed St Benilde center Robbie Manalac in a box out scuffle. Blazer swingman Chuck Dalanon as usual tried to get a piece of the action but was restrained by cooler heads.

Veteran Jeff Morial nailed a trey to make it 63-61 but the Blazers muffed a couple of trips to the foul line that could have changed the outcome.

Al-Hussaini had 19 points for Ateneo while Morial led all scorers with 20. Another veteran guard, Gelo Montecastro, showed up in street clothes and did not play for St Benilde. Ateneo did without UAAP Season 71 ROY Ryan Buenafe and head coach Norman Black.

In the last game of the day San Beda traipsed through the first half and then totally shocked and awed Mapua Tech iin the second half to come away with the 30-plus point victory. Veterans JR Tecson, Garvo Lanete, Dave Marcelo, JR Taganas and newcomer Maher Villahermosa all pulled together in the second half for the big win.

MVP Cup: Green Archers Edge UP

The Green Archers edged UP, in a cliffhanger, 67-66 at the Arena this afternoon. The win somewhat made up for the 1 point loss the Archers suffered at the hands of the same UP team in the Fr. Martin Cup tournament held earlier this year.

The game marked the much-anticipated debut of Arvie Bringas, former center of the NCAA Jr. champion San Sebastian Staglets. Bringas did not disappoint, and displayed his inside prowess on both offense and defense. He topscored with 12 points despite being given limited playing time by Coach Franz.

The Archers dominated the first quarter, 19-14 before a spirited UP offense led by red shirting Silungan enabled them to take the half at 28-34. Some ragged play by the Archers on offense resulted in several miscues which were translated into fastbreaks by the Maroons. Defensively, the Archer press failed to blunt the frenetic UP offense.

After the halftime break, Archers buckled down to work, led by Simon Atkins who scored on successive possessions to cut the lead to a single basket at the end of the 3rd. UP kept it close throughout the 2nd half behind the hot hands of Silungan and ex-Zobel player Reyes. Every time the Archers would take the lead, either player would hit a triple to either tie the score or give UP the lead.

Although Webb, Malabes, Barua, and Mangahas were failed to match their usual point production, their aggressive drives resulted either in field goals or foul shots. Bringas also made his presence felt in the paint on offense, causing UP veteran Woody to foul out. Our guards would set up isolation plays for Bringas, and he succeeded in getting to the basket or managed to fish for fouls which he translated into points at the foul line.

An interesting subplot was the matchup between former UPIS players who are now with La Salle against their counterparts from La Salle schools who now suit up for UP. On the UP roster are Mikee Reyes, the LSGH pg last year, and Martin Reyes from DLSZ. Former UPIS players who are now with La Salle are Villanueva and Marata. Martin Reyes, (no, this is another Martin) who used to man the paint for LSGH, made it to the Archer lineup, although he didn’t play today.

UP paraded a couple of players who are not yet eligible to play this UAAP season: Silungan and Gingerich. Silungan is a tall wing player who studied in the US, and who can light it up from the 3 point area. He torched the Archer defense throughout the game, including a last second catch and shoot to end the first half. Interestingly, Silungan considered Ateneo and San Beda before ending up in UP.

The closeness of the game showed that the Archers still have a long way to go before they can be considered ready for the UAAP wars. The veterans such as Barua, Mangahas, and Ferdinand do not seem to be as sharp as expected, and the rookies, while full of potential, are still untested.

Simon Atkins, though, seems to be ready to go to war already. Perhaps the competition at the pg position is keeping him on his toes. Tolentino proved his worth in the closing minutes, sinking a corner trey and a jumper to keep the game close. Marata didn’t get much floor time, and Andrada showed that he still has a way to go.

If the UAAP season were to start tomorrow, we’d probably not be one of the favorites given the current state of the team. But there are a couple of months to go, and the coaches have a plan for the team.

With this bunch of veterans and sophomores/rookies, the team can only get better.

Slight correction on this part of the article- Gingerich graduated from Faith Academy (Antipolo), same high school as Long and Burke of ADMU, so he is eligible to play this season for UP if he does make it to the final roster. If you want to know more about him, one can read additional details by visiting the Oblation Nation sub-forum here in Gameface.

Warriors vs Lions; Archers go for No. 3
Updated April 24, 2009 12:00 AM
Philstar

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion University of the East finally gets to flex its muscle against no less than last year’s runner-up San Beda College, even as De La Salle University eyes a third straight victory in the 2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Warriors won last year’s Filoil Flying V championship in a tightly-fought contest against the Red Lions and are again installed as one of the pre-season picks this year, but several changes in the off-season could ether make or unmake their bid for this year’s tournament.

It was supposed to be a rematch between last summer's two Finalists, and it turned out to be a repeat performance for University of the East. Displaying UAAP mid-season form, the Warriors cruised to the 69 - 62 victory over NCAA grand slam champion San Beda in the 5:00 PM main game.

Looks like that trip to the US a couple of weeks ago was no junket, as new head coach Lawrence Chongson's boys ran their halfcourt sets fluidy, moved very well without the ball, constantly found the open men, and overall just displayed a more efficient and effective game compared to the Red Lions.

San Beda actually took an 18-15 lead at the end of the first period, but that turned out to be the only quarter they would lead. UE masterfully clogged the passing lanes to take away the short passing and high-low game of San Beda. Meanwhile, Val Acuna, the star of their successful US training tour, began to find his range from way out. Pari Llagas and Elmer Espiritu took it right to the San Beda big men with gusto and dominated the taller Red Lions inside.

In the third period, Chongson stuck to the five of James Martinez, Paul Lee, Acuna, Espiritu and Llagas and they just seemed to get stronger and build more wind as the period progressed. UE built its biggest lead of 16 at 47-31 midway through the quarter, they led by double digits practically the entire quarter as well.

San Beda showed some life behind center Sudan Daniels and guards Maher Villahermosa and Garvo Lanete to trim the Warriors lead all the way down to 55-61, but that was as good as it would get for the Red Lions. Martinez found Espiritu on an alley-oop for a two-handed slam even as the power-leaping forward continued to stymie the inside incursions of San Beda.

Martinez and Acuna took the game home for UE even as San Beda faltered in the end-game. Acuna led all scorers with 27 points including 4-6 from trey range. Llagas contributed 14 markers of his own, while Espiritu had 14 rebounds and six blocks, three on Daniels.

Daniels still managed to lead San Beda with 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

:D last few seconds in the game, they were trailing. No foul or attempts to foul at all. No steals was being attempted as well. They just played hard defense. :D

I'm no basketball expert, but I don't think you can erase a deficit and win with that play in the dying seconds.

Press release lang yan.

Sino rito ang nakapanood na nang mga laro dito, at least 2 playday?

In this event, UE fielded a team the core of which is made up of young players from it's UAAP line up. Yung pasok sa age-limit.

The rest of the field had no UAAP or NCAA core to speak of.

ADMU, LSGH and SBC's team are not even Team B. No need to "see" the teams. Just dare the reporter to publish in this forum the line-ups. By "reading" who are in the lists will tell you there are no current NCAA or UAAP Jrs aspirants in them.

Pero yung sa UE? ::)

Nothing wrong with that kung pasok sa age cut-off.

Tanong...

Ano balita sa mga bata?

Jr. Red Warriors sweep elims
Updated May 18, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The vastly improved University of the East Junior Red Warriors showed their dominance with imposing victories in the elimination round to advance to the semifinals of the Filoil Flying V MVP Cup junior basketball tournament last week.

The Jr. Red Warriors blasted the San Beda Red Cubs, 65-53, overwhelmed the San Sebastian Staglets, 90-45, and snared the UST Baby Tigers, 63-51, behind consistent top scorer Kevin Fernandez.

Supporting Fernandez are Christian Canicula, JC Duncil, Isiah Banawa and Paul Jerome Carpio.

It is a triple triumph for winning coach Mark Herrera, who also calls the shots for the Quezon City-Batang Talk N Text and Alaska teams which topped the elimination round with 3-0 slates in Group A and B of the ongoing Batang PBA basketball tournament.

Herrera is head coach of the national Under-13 training pool.

In this event, UE fielded a team the core of which is made up of young players from it's UAAP line up. Yung pasok sa age-limit.

The rest of the field had no UAAP or NCAA core to speak of.

Oca, I have a son playing for Ateneo sa FilOil. Prada Team ang pinadala ng Ateneo. The same is true for LSGH, San Beda and Lourdes. Tama ka....yung UAAP team ang pinadala ng UE. I was able to watch the games of UE vs San Beda and UST. Although UE won, hirap sila sa beda at uste.

Yung 13 and Under NT natalo sa Ateneo at LSGH.

Tama observation mo PRAISE release yun . Sana magkita ang Ateneo at UE sa finals at talunin namin ang UE. ;D Tignan natin kung anong klaseng praise release ang lalabas.

Stags dominate off-target Archers

MANILA, Philippines – San Sebastian pounced on an off-form La Salle side and dominated the paint all game as the Stags rolled to an easy 73-59 victory in the Filoil-Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

The Stags rode on an explosive first quarter run to take control, sustained their form in the second to build a whopping 32-point lead before cruising to their fourth win against a loss dealt by the Jose Rizal U Bombers the last time out.

“The key to this win was our rebounding,” said SSC coach Ato Agustin. “We were also able to break their press.”

John Murphy Raymundo scored seven points for San Sebastian, but led the pack most of the way to break La Salle’s dreaded fullcourt press.

Jimbo Aquino fired 18 points, Raymond Maconocido had 10 while Ian Sangalang and John Murphy Raymundo combined for 17 points for San Sebastian, which tied Adamson in second in Group A.

The Archers groped for form coming off a three-week training from the US and could only come closest at 14 with still 2:39 left in the contest tipped to be close but ended up in a blowout.

Earlier, Adamson muscled its way past winless National U, 65-57, to roll to its fourth straight win against a lone defeat in Group A.

The Falcons sustained their form in the entire contest and simply outplayed the Bulldogs, posting leads of as many as 19 points in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs tried to mount a rally in the first five minutes of the last period but the Falcons quickly thwarted the fightback with Austin Manyara coming up with a slam to give Adamson another 12-point lead, 65-53, with 46.4 seconds left in the contest.

Lester Alvarez and Janus Lozada combined for 21 points for Adamson. – With report from contributor Celest Flores

ar Eastern University and San Sebastian College trounced their quarterfinal rivals to join defending champion University of the East in the semifinals of the 2009 Filoil Flying V Preseason Manuel V. Pangilinan Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

National team standout Mark Barroca erupted for 11 in the third quarter as the Tamaraws pulled away past Jose Rizal University, 76-61, while the Stags survived a late comeback by Adamson University, 82-69.

The other quarterfinal affair between San Beda and De La Salle are being played as of presstime with the winner facing FEU in the semis on Friday.

Playing his second game in three days, Barroca still managed to finish with a game-high of 25 points while getting help from big man Reil Cervantes, who had 17 markers.

Barroca's fellow RP developmental team member JR Cawaling was the third FEU player in double figures with 11.

The Heavy Bombers had their last lead at 44-43 until the Tamaraws roared back behind a 16-5 windup at the end of the third period to take the lead for good.

Southpaw Marvin Hayes was the lone bright spot for JRU with 22 points in a losing cause as John Wilson and James Sena were held to just five points each.

Meanwhile, the Stags blew a 19-point halftime lead and held a three-point advantage midway into the payoff period but held on behind the efforts of Jimbo Aquino and Jonathan Semira.

Aquino led the way for San Sebastian with 14 points while rookie Dexter Maiquez also had the same number of points made.

Rookie big men Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang chipped in 13 and 11 markers, respectively.

Joider Cabrera topscored for Adamson with 15 points while Lester Alvarez added 13 points, eight of which in the fourth quarter.

A huge run in the final canto put the Falcons behind by just three, 69-66, on a triple by Austin Manera but their shooting woes hounded them in the last few minutes.

San Sebastian will play UE in the other semifinal pairing. The Red Warriors advanced into the Final Four after downing Mapua, 75-68, last Saturday.

Warriors duel Tamaraws for FilOil crown

By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines - University of the East returns to the finals of the FilOil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup, but faces a new foe in Far Eastern University.

The Warriors halted San Sebastian’s off-the-formchart run with a 90-84 triumph to clinch the first championship berth, but the Tamaraws spoiled a repeat of last year’s title showdown by tripping the San Beda Red Lions, 64-58, in the Final Four last night at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Paul Lee knocked in a game-high 26 points for the Warriors, who pulled off the victory minus several key players.

“We were down by six men,” said UE coach Lawrence Chongson. “They were stricken by flu and they have to be checked. But the boys’ didn’t give up. We need this kind of game to test the team’s maturity.”

Reihl Cervantes drilled 19 markers and rookie guard Ryan Roose Garcia added 15 as the Tamaraws upset the three-time NCAA champion Lions.

Elmer Espiritu buried 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Warriors, while Rudy Lingganay played a key role in the clutch to turn a 74-73 lead into an 80-73 advantage.

The Warriors played minus the veteran pair of Pari Llagas and Toto Bandaying and role players John Rey Albanza, Kenneth Acibar, Erwin Duran and John Michael Noble.

Jimbo Aquino shot 21 points to lead the unheralded Stags, who surprisingly won seven of eight games to reach the semifinals.

The scores:

^ May I just say that these Stags are anything but "unheralded" as my crush put it. They are in fact one of the teams that look ready as hell to challenge San Beda for the NCAA title. Their two new recruits - 6'3" forward-center Ron Pascual and 6'2" forward Calvin Abueva - will make many veteran heads turn with their incredible athletic ability and relentless style of play.

Agree with you mga pare ko.

The favorites this year are clearly San Sebastian and JRU, in that order.

The seeding has shifted in favor of SSC-R now and JRU slipped down to second seeding owing to their poor showing in the last 2 months of off-season games. Looks like the injury to Etame Joe has dealt a big psychological blow to the Heavy Bombers.

San Beda remains to be a strong third. But I still like our school's chances. Looks like Frankie Lim would be a better coach this season and he has done wonders in the Fil-oil and Nike summer leagues.

Far Eastern University survived a last-ditch stand from hell from their university belt neighbors University of the East to claim the Fil Oil Flying V MVP Cup 84 - 78 in front of a raucous crowd at the Arena in San Juan.

FEU stormed to the 47-25 lead at the lemon time break built upon the relentless transition attacks of Smart Gilas national team players Mark "Babyface" Barroca and JR Cawaling as well as strongman center-forward Reil Cervantes. Center Glen Eguilos, emergent superstar Ryan Roose Garcia and Cameroonian forward Pipo Nuondoo also joined the attack as the Red Warriors were reeling from the wave upon wave of Tamaraw baskets.

UE looked shocked and awed and ready to call it a day in the first half. None of their shots were falling, passes were going awry, and the defense, long a staple of UE, seemed to have gone on an early vacation. After an early James Martinez three-pointer, things quickly headed south for the UE game. Power-leaping forward Elmer Espiritu, who displayed a much-improved offensive game in this tournament, couldn't find the bottom of the net. Paul Lee, the new superstar for the red and white, ran into all sorts of trouble trying to penetrate the FEU zone. Head coach Lawrence Chongson went to his bench early and they just could not deliver.

Showing all the frustration within, Chongson charged a referee right in the middle of the court, got called for the technical foul, and was automatically ejected from the playing court for laying hands on a game official. As he left he took his starting unit with him. Espiritu, Lee, Martinez, Val Acuna and Rudy Linganay left the floor and followed their coach to the dugout early in the third period.

FEU smelled the kill already and were up as much as 61-38. But the UE bench dug deep and suddenly put up a fight that seemed to stun the Tamaraws. Paul Zamar cut up the FEU defense with his dribble-penetration and one-man early offense. Lucas Tagarda nailed a trey from their left quarter court then followed that up with a short jumper. Jairold Flores, a former RP Youth Team member, and centers Ken Acibar and John Alabanza took turns pounding the ball inside against the bigger and more experienced Tamaraws with alacrity. By the time the quarter ended it was down 67-55 for FEU.

In the payoff fourth period, Chongson finally sent his starters back to their bench, and they could not have come at a better time. FEU had opened up another 18-point lead. But Acuna, Martinez and Lee went on a 14-0 tear that made it 75-80 with still two minutes left on a drive by Martinez. Action however came to a halt as Martinez had to be brought off the court in a stretcher.

An Acuna trey made it 78-80 with some 39 seconds remaining. FEU head coach Glen Capacio sued for time. FEU then leaned on Garcia for the insurance freethrows and the final count.

"I'm glad we pulled out the win, it was tough but the boys kept their cool, UE is a really tough opponent," said Capacio in a post-game interview. "Hopefully this will give us some momentum going into the UAAP, sana nga nagdere-derecho na," he added.

Garcia was named tournament MVP, while Lee, Espiritu, Cervantes and Sudan Daniels joined him in the Mythical 5. Cawaling led FEU with 20 points while Garcia had 17. Lee had 16 for UE while Acuna added 15.

Martinez was rushed to the St Luke's hospital and was confirmed with an ACL injury.

He better not use that as an alibi if UE fails to make it into the semis.

For the way they played their halfcourt offense this summer, wala talaga silang pag-asang pumasok sa semis ng UAAP. At di naman sa bawat possession ay pupuntos sila mula sa transition offense.

Bigyan niyo ng dictionary si Chongson at ipabasa ang kahulugan ng salitang "predictable".
