The local players refused to join the National Team if those 3 players are included as they accuse the last national coaching staff of favoritism for those Fil-americans to the detriment of the homegrown players who had long-trained in the team months before the newcomers came into the team. Since you cannot have just 3 players in a team, the wish of the greater majority had to be followed or we'll have no team.

You can't blame the local players if they chose not to play based on their previous experiences. The one to blame is the coach, and second the group who chose that coach to lead the team. Again, you can't compare women's basketball to men's basketball... get a coach with vast experience in the women's game....

Have you seen NCAA coaches in the states coaching women's basketball? Only in the Philippines baby...it clearly shows how bad our system is.

Women’s basketball got another shot in the arm after Ever Bilena Cosmetics Inc. recently signed an agreement with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) that will make the country’s leading beauty product the main backer of the national junior team.

Under the agreement signed by SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan and Ever Bilena chairman Dioceldo Sy, Ever Bilena is tasked to form and finance the training of the national junior team for the next three years.

“I’m very thankful for Mr. Pangilinan and the SBP for providing us the opportunity to help the national junior team, it’s really a great honor for us to be involved in this kind of endeavor,” said Sy.

According to Sy, their entry into the world of sports is in line with the company’s new tag “Beauty In Sports”.

“This is really a perfect combination,” the former Philippine Basketball League (PBL) chairman said.

Ever Bilena is no stranger to sports, having won three Women’s Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) titles since 1998.

SBP executive director Noli Eala lauded Ever Bilena’s sponsorship of the RP junior team, saying they are “heartened by the fact that we share in the belief of the importance of developing and maintaining an elite and grassroots program for the women’s-youth sector.”

Sy said they will immediately buckle down to work as he named former University of the Philippines star Pat Aquino as the coach of the team with Paul Du and Julie Amos as assistants. Johnson Martinez will be the team manager.

“They are now looking for players and hopefully we can form the team by April,” said Sy.

They will hold their tryouts in late next month before going around in Visayas and Mindanao in March.

Also present during the signing of agreement were SBP chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno of Misamis Oriental, SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas, Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero and SBP Board trustee Bernie Atienza.

RP women’s youth tryout slated
Daily Tribune
02/16/2009

The Careline-Philippine Women’s Junior and Youth teams will hold their tryouts for Metro Manila-based aspirants on Feb. 21 to 21 at the Xavier School Sports Center in San Juan.

RP Women’s Youth godfather Dioceldo Sy, chairman of Ever Bilena Cosmetics Inc., hopes to gather and train the best available talents in the country for future international tournaments.

The two-day tryout is line with the massive effort of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas under its president and telecommunications mogul Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala in reviving the country’s glory in women’s basketball.

“This is the first of a series of tryouts we are going to hold for the women’s youth and junior basketball. With the support of SBP, we hope can attract a large number of aspirants,” said Sy, who has been tasked by SBP to form and finance the training of the RP 16-under team.

Only players born in 1993 and 1992 are allowed to take part in the tryouts set from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Former University of the Philippines player Pat Aquino will call the shots for the RP team.

Players who wish to join the tryouts will get complimentary careline products and t-shirts from Freego of Edward Tio. Participants must bring photocopy of their birth certificates.

After the Metro Manila tryout, Sy said Aquino and his coaching staff composed of Paul Du and former RP standout Julie Amos will go to Dagupan, Cebu and Mindanao to conduct a similar tryout.

“We believe in the vision of SBP that for the country to become No. 1 in both the men’s and women’s divisions, we should maintain an elite and grassroots program for the women’s youth sector. And that is the commitment of Careline to the SBP and to the country,” Sy, the former Philippine Basketball League chairman, said.

The Metro Manila tryouts for the Careline-Philippine women’s junior and youth teams began at the Xavier School Sports Center in San Juan yesterday. Another round of tryouts is set this morning starting at 8.

“We’re hoping to gather and train the best available talents for future international tournaments,” said women’s youth godfather Dioceldo Sy, chairman of Ever Bilena cosmetics. “This is the first of a series of tryouts for the women’s youth team.”

After the Metro Manila leg, Sy said the coaching staff made up of Pat Aquino, Paul Du and Julie Vega will go to Dagupan, Cebu and Davao to conduct similar tryouts.

Only players born in 1992 and 1993 are eligible for the 16-under team that Sy is assembling to compete in the first FIBA-Asia championships for junior women on Oct. 21-29.

“We believe in the SBP’s vision that for the country to become No. 1 in both the men’s and women’s divisions, we should maintain an elite and grassroots program for the women’s youth sector,” said Sy, a former PBL chairman. “That is the commitment of Careline to the SBP and our country.”

Sy, whose Ever Bilena team has won three straight WPBL titles, said his support for the country’s under-16 squad is “my own small way of giving back.” He called it a “huge challenge” and vowed “to do our best to get the championship.”
