View Full Version : Preparations for 9th NAASCU

01-08-2009, 01:59 PM
The STI College Olympians have started their preparations for the upcoming 9th NAASCU.

The OLympians are entered in the Fr. Martin's Cup tournament this semester. This tournament serves as a tune up for the Olympians since they want the new members to feel comfortable with their new roles. The core of the first five is already gone. Ramon Mabayo, Darryl Mendoza, Michael Cabangon and William Vasallo are all over 23 by next school year which means their back ups will have to step up with their new roles.

The Olympians lost their first two outings to Mapua and San Beda respectively last november.

The Olympians lost three straight games. First was the UP Fighting Maroons, then the San Sebastian Stags and finally the DLSU Green Archers.
The Olympians are hopeful that the encounter with these teams will help them gel more in the future>
Go Olympians lets work hard to attain that Teamwork!

Center Martin Antonio, a former San Beda Red Lion, had 18 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort against Jose Rizal B, 75 - 68 in the ongoing Fr Martin Cup Open division.

STI actually held a 26-14 lead to end the opening period but sputtered in the second and third periods as the Heavy Bombers came to life behind veteran guard Mark Cagoco. Cagoco led the Bombers with 15 points and four assists.

Ateneo won by a mile. I didnt bother to check the score. It was an okay game, the Blue Eagles showed their team work and the Olympians were still far from it. GOod game though

UCLAA semifinalist De Ocampo Memorial Colleges edged NAASCU runner-up STI College 74 - 73 in the ongoing 15th FMC Summer Tournament at the La Consolacion Gym in Manila.

It was a nip and tuck affair with neither team giving up a double-digit advantage. But steadier freethrow shooting and more patient execution in the end-game spelled the difference for the Cobras of head coach Toti Dojillo.

Guard Rio Flores led all scorers with 17 points on 3-4 shooting from 3-point land while former San Beda player Martin Antonio led STI with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Hayup si Martin Antonio ha! Hindi pa ba sya graduate?

Medyo rusty ulit ang STI team since their last practice game was almost a month ago.
The loss came through poor transition defense that gave a lot of fastbreaks to the De OCampo team.
The Olympians had a hard time getting back on defense as evidenced by 2 on none fastbreak opportunities
by the de Ocampo team. Another reason for the loss is the poor free throw shooting down the stretch. Imagine missing 6 Fts and losing by just a solitary point.

I hope the loss can help the team realize their mistakes and do something about it.

Regarding Martin Antonio, graduate na siya ng San Beda, second course niya na ang kinukuha niya sa STI.
He will be playing for one season in the NAASCU for STI....Bale last season niya na ito.

The STI College Olympians bowed to the UST Growling Tigers this afternoon 83-100.
The Olympians stood toe to toe against the tigers for three quarters but fizzled at the start of
the fourth as the tigers silenced the Olympians for four and a half minutes to take a 85-65 lead.

The Olympians still need consistency as the TIgers pressure defense forced them to a lot of turnovers.
Martin Antonio, Maclean Sabellina and Jerald Bautista were the bright spots for the Olympians today.

Hopefully the Olympians improve in the next few games.

Thanks for the workout. You really showed the Tigers their weaknesses and I'm sure coach Pido is greateful for it. Your team looks younger than the past teams but they sure are not lacking in skills and determination. If you had 2 more players in our rotation you probably could hve made it a tighter game till the end. You should be the NAASCU favorites. Sayang Noy Crisostomo decided to move to UPHR.

Oo nga, Nonoy would have been the lead guard by now.
I am okay with the way we played. At the same time nakita rin namin kung ano kaya
gawin ng players namin.
Our team is relatively younger, hopefully the core will be the same
in the next three years.
Good luck sa UAAP pre.

^ Yeah, bumitaw lang that's why UST was able to pull away. But it they were fighting toe-to-toe up to the 3rd quarter. The tide really turned when coach Pido sent in a very small team to stress a point. Ayun, napahiya yung malalaki at naglabas na ng angas. That, plus the homecourt advantage was the biggest edge. Kayang sumabay ng STI pag sa talent lang.

Thanks Bchoter,
Tama nga..ambilis ng small line up niyo...intensity was the key there..we had a hard time matching
the intensity of the small boys.
Tapos nung nag call ng time out si Coach Vic pumasok na yung best 5 ng UST and tapos ang kwento hehe
My only hope is that the Olympians learned a lot from that loss.

Last year, umpisa pa lang natambakan na kami, so it means nag improve din ang team
hopefully by the end of the first sem we might meet again, maliit na lang ang pagitan hehe
