NBA office asked Lebron and Dwight to coach the rookie-sophome game. Lebron has higher basketball IQ and better understanding of basketball over dwight. But then again this is coaching. Interesting idea.

expect a sub for the east all stars

Jameer Nelson just injured his shoulder. If he opts for surgery, he's out for the season but even if he decides not to, I'm sure he (at the advice of the Orlando coaching staff and medical crew) would choose to sit out the All Star weekend to rest that injury and lessen the chances of him aggravating it.

All Stars will finally feature the H-O-R-S-E competition
=====================================

Durant, Mayo, Johnson in All-Star H-O-R-S-E game
By The Associated Press

Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant and O.J. Mayo, a favorite for this season’s award, highlight the field for a H-O-R-S-E competition during All-Star Saturday night.

Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson is the other competitor in TNT’s special event, the network announced Tuesday. Johnson will play in the All-Star game, while Durant and Mayo were selected for the rookie challenge.

The contest will take place outdoors at the NBA’s All-Star Block Party on Saturday in Phoenix before TNT televises the All-Star Saturday night festivities.

If a player makes a shot in H-O-R-S-E, the next competitor must make the same shot or receive a letter. A player gets an ‘H’ for his first miss and is eliminated once he has all five letters of the word.

Players will have 24 seconds to execute their shots, and an NBA referee will rule if they’re done properly. Dunking won’t be allowed.

With Bosh out, that only leaves KG and Howard as their legit big men. Looks like the East will play small-ball and be a running team again this year.

we have another replacement.

this time it's in the Slam Dunk competition

J.R. Smith takes over Rudy Gay's spot. The latter has a strained left hip that forced him to miss a couple of games already.

Nate Robinson wins the 2009 dunk contest over Dwight Howard. But the big news coming out of that event was Lebron James confirming this early that he will be joining the dunk contest next year. Now if only guys like Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter joins LeBron in 2010, that would indeed be awesome* ;)

nah ... their knees (and bodies) aren't what they used to be 5 years ago. they certainly can't top their performances from previous dunk contests. bron just have to go and create something special for next year (something ala iggy who glided across the backboard to dunk)

CM_Punk

True, both of them are over 30, and probably don't want to risk getting hurt. So, it should be guys with fresh legs then who should join the contest next year and challenge LBJ, like your suggestion in Andre Iguodala.

LeBron's decision to join next year's dunk contest is clearly just him being an attention whore, pure and simple.

He made the fans wait for like 5 years and now he decided to throw his name. Why? Because the dunk contest right now is not the same as it used to be. Just try to inject some never-be-seen props and hope for the fans to side with him and kaboom, we have a winner. And with David Stern right by his side, LeBron knows it'll be moot and academic.

Or maybe he's jealous of all the attention being given to Clark Kent (last year) and this year, Lex Luthor.

Speaking of an awesome dunk contest among active players, I'd rather have Vince, Iggy and J-Rich.

From Yahoo Sports ...

East struggles in 146-119 All-Star game loss

By ANDREW BAGNATO, AP Sports Writer Feb 16, 4:15 am EST

PHOENIX (AP)—As the All-Star Game tipped off, East coach Mike Brown spotted Celtics legend Bill Russell in a seat near the bench.

“It kind of hit me at the beginning of the game … he was sitting right there,” Brown said.

As the West drubbed the East 146-119 on Sunday night, Brown may have been tempted to send Russell in. Russell, who has the fourth-most rebounds in All-Star Game history, might have helped dent the West’s superiority in the paint.

The West used its size to pile up a 51-38 advantage on the backboards. If he couldn’t call on Russell, Brown certainly could have used 6-foot-10 Chris Bosh of Toronto, who was picked for the team but had to sit out with a knee injury.

“Their size advantage, anybody and everybody could tell was a big factor,” Brown said.

The East could have erased that advantage if it had shot better. But the East made only 8-of-34 shots (23.5 percent) from beyond the arc.

Former Suns guard Joe Johnson, now with the Hawks, went 0-for-3 from beyond the arc in his return to Phoenix and Boston’s Ray Allen also missed all three of his 3-point tries.

When its 3-point attempts wouldn’t fall, the East struggled to penetrate the West’s defense.

“I think on defense they played a zone, so we couldn’t get to the rack,” Howard said. “It was tough for us to get into the paint. It seemed like they had Shaq, Yao and Amare (Stoudemire) and Tim (Duncan) and everybody in the paint loaded up.”

At times, the East looked like freshmen playing against the varsity. The East’s only true center was 6-foot-11 Dwight Howard of Orlando.

“It was tough for a guy like Rashard (Lewis, at 6-foot-10) to be banging with Shaquille O’Neal,” said Howard, who had 13 points and nine rebounds.

The East stars essentially served as props for the reunion of former Lakers teammates O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, who were named co-MVPs.

At least the East still has the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics.

That was the only solace the Eastern Conference stars could take after this lopsided loss. Even though it’s only an exhibition, the result reinforced the perception that the West is a stronger conference overall—except in the eyes of the East players.

“This game doesn’t matter when it comes to that,” Miami’s Dwyane Wade said. “What matters at the end of the day is who wins the championship. Is it going to be West or is it going to be East?

“It goes back and forth,” Wade said. “They have strong teams, no question. We all know that. But our strong teams in the East are strong, and can compete with anybody.”

On this night, though, the East couldn’t compete. The East bolted to an early 20-8 lead before the West roared back with a 19-0 run in the first quarter, and the East never led again.

“We started out of the gates very well when we had the first five out there,” Brown said.

Brown didn’t ride his starters—Howard, Wade, Cleveland’s LeBron James, Boston’s Kevin Garnett and Detroit’s Allen Iverson—for very long. He wanted to spread the minutes around, and none of his first-teamers played more than 28 minutes.

James led the East with 20 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor. Wade had 18 points and five assists and Paul Pierce added 18 points off the bench.

The East had won three of the last four All-Star games, and it leads the all-time series 35-23.
