The Smart-Pilipinas National Team unleashed a torrid running game throughout to demolish Vietnam, 108-62, in a smashing debut in the first China-Asean Invitational Tournament in Pingguo, China yesterday.

The Nationals also sustained a pressure defense on the hapless Vietnamese en route to the one-sided win.

Six players scored in double figures for the RP team led by 6-foot-9 Fil-Am Greg Slaughter of the University of the Visayas with 20 points.

Far Eastern’s Mark Barocca chipped in 18 points while San Beda’s Ogie Menor had 15.

RP ballers snatch semis slot in China
Daily Tribune
12/20/2008

GUANGXI, China — Within a span of 14 hours, the Smart-Pilipinas National Team beat Brunei and Singapore to advance to the semifinals of the 1st China-Asean CBO Men’s Invitational Basketball tournament here.

Bannered by 11 members of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas development pool under Serbian coach Rajko Toroman, the RP team routed Brunei, 112-47, Thursday night and then humbled Singapore, 75-64, Friday morning to barge into the crossover semis against Macau Saturday.

Counting its 108-62 win over Vietnam last Wednesday, the National Team remained unscathed in Group B of the tourney, matching the 3-0 record of the Chinese team in Group A. The two teams are expected to clash in the title match Sunday, with the winner getting 50,000 RNB.

In a text message to the team and Toroman, SBP president Manny Pangilinan called the twin victories “tough but well deserved” and expressed his congratulations to the young team.

“If you meet Macao in the semis and China in the Finals, you just have to be extra vigilant and work extra hard,” Pangilinan added.

Although playing under extremely cold conditions, the RP 5 toyed with the much shorter and inexperienced Brunei team coached by former PBA player Bennet Palad.

With Fil-Ams Terrel Theophile and Greg Slaughter combining with Dylan Ababou, the RP team took a 33-12 lead in the first quarter and opened up a huge 71-35 lead in the third behind 17 unanswered points. The nationals also displayed tough defense, limiting the hapless Brunei squad to no more than 12 points in each quarter.

Slaughter led the scoring charge against Brunei with 21 points, while Theophile had 20 and Mark Barocca added 17. Slaughter and Theophile also had 11 boards apiece while Barocca had six assists.

The Singaporean team, much taller than the Brunei squad and definitely more experienced, put up a tougher fight but fell by the wayside just the same.

The Singaporean team, much taller than the Brunei squad and definitely more experienced, put up a tougher fight but fell by the wayside just the same.

Represented by the runner-up team in the NBL Division 1 league, Singapore kept in step with the RP team with accurate three-point shooting and tenacious defense, even taking a 20-19 lead early in the second quarter.

But the Filipinos battled back through Fil-Am guard Joey Deas and FEU forward JR Cawaling to take a 37-29 halftime lead.

Refusing to lay down and die, Singapore surprised the RP squad by outscoring the nationals 20-18 in the third period, cutting the deficit to 55-49, mostly through its torrid three-point shooting. In all, the Singaporeans made 44 percent of their three-point shots, sinking eight of 18 attempts.

But the Filipinos were not to be denied. Despite being bothered by the cold weather and battling fatigue, the RP team, led by Barroca, scored seven straight points and took a 67-56 lead going into the last three minutes of play.

Smart Pilipinas whips Macao for 4th straight win
Daily Tribune
12/22/2008

GUANGXI, China — Having adjusted to the chilly conditions here, the Smart Pilipinas National Team warmed up for its expected title showdown with host China Saturday by whipping Macao 118-59 in the semifinals of the 1st China-Asean CBO Men’s Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Pinggou Arena.

China, represented by the Lin Ning team, repulsed a fighting Singapore crew 78-63 in the other cross over semis match-up and will face the Philippines in the title showdown Sunday.

In scoring its fourth straight win, the Philippine team, composed of collegiate stars in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas developmental pool and handled by Serbian coach Rajko Toroman, scored without let up from the opening tip and overpowered the inexperienced Macao squad.

“I am very happy the team is quickly learning and adjusting to the system of international play which we are setting up. We have only started playing competitive games with this new system this week and I really did not expect the boys to perform this well in our first tournament together. This is a very positive development,” Toroman said.

After Macao scored the first basket, Mark Barroca opened scoring for the RP team and opened the floodgates for a huge assault that silenced the predominantly pro-Macao crowd and gave the Filipinos a 26-15 edge going into the second quarter. From there, the RP team, sponsored by Smart and Nike, kept up the pressure and broke the game wide open at the half 64-30.

SBP executive director Noli Eala, who heads the RP delegation, was satisfied with the performance of the team, saying: “This was our best game so far under the system of coach Toroman. It is amazing how the boys are really sacrificing their own brand of play for the team concept being put in place. While we are hoping for a championship, I am already sure we will come out of this tourney better and stronger as a team no matter what the outcome is tomorrow.”

RP developmental squad beats China for CBO title
Daily Tribune
12/23/2008

GUANGXI, China — Fil Am Joey Deas and Far Eastern University guard Mark Barocca stood tallest in a game against a bigger and more experienced Chinese team, leading Smart-Pilipinas National Team to a close 76-72 victory that won it st China-Asean CBO Men’s Invitational Championship before a packed brand new Pinggou Arena here.

Deas, a 5’10 point guard from Rockhurst University in Kansas who traces his roots in Cebu and Barocca, a 5’9 native of Zamboanga City, combined for 37 points to turn back a spirited rally by China from 15 points down in the 2nd half to preserve the first international victory for the RP Developmental squad slated to play in the 2009 SEA Games in Laos, 2010 Asian Games in China and 2011 Fiba Asia Men’s Championship Qualifier for the London Olympics.

China, with an average height of 6’6, outrebounded the Philippines 44-33. But the RP team made up it with tenacious defense limiting China to only 2-of-15 shooting from 3 point range and forcing 14 turnovers. The Filipinos also shot 48 percent from two point range and 15 of 21 from the line even though the Nationals were charged with 10 more fouls, 26-16.

Rajko Toroman, the Serbian coach and project director of the National Team, who formed the young RP squad barely two-and-a-half weeks ago, expressed satisfaction with the win. “It was a tough but definitely sweet victory. I challenged the boys to show their true character and they did. We did not expect to win right away so this is a very good start for our program,” Toroman stated.

Playing before a partisan home crowd and with its top local officials in attendance, China stormed to an early 6-0 lead at the start of the game. The RP squad which is bankrolled by Smart and outfitted by Nike answered with six straight points from Deas to tie the game early. Finding their bearings under chilly conditions, the Filipinos controlled the pace of the game to take a slim lead 18-14 after the 1st period.

FILIPINO-American Joey Deas and Mark Barocca stood tallest against the bigger and more experienced Chinese team to lead the Smart-Philippine five to a 76-72 victory on Sunday and claim the title of the first China-Asean CBO Men’s Invitational tournament at the Pinggou Arena in Guangxi, China.
Deas, a five-foot-10 point guard from Rockhurst University in Kansas who traces his roots in Cebu, and Barocca, a native of Zamboanga City, combined for 37 points and made crucial baskets in the closing seconds that doused the spirited rally by the Chinese.
It was the first international victory for the RP developmental squad, which used the tournament as part of its long-term goal of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in London.
The team was coached by Serbian Rajko Toroman.
“It was a tough but definitely sweet victory. I challenged the boys to show their true character and they did. We did not expect to win right away so this is a very good start for our program,” said Toroman, who formed the team barely three weeks ago for the tournament.
After taking a 41-27 advantage at the half, the Filipinos raced to their largest lead at 50-35 on a sleek running game and full-court pressure defense.
But China, represented in the tournament by the Li Ning Basketball Team of Guangxi featuring five Chinese Basketball Association All-Stars, fought back through the efforts of six-foot-10 center Gao Wei to trim the deficit midway through the quarter, 50-43.
Deas kept the pressure after scoring seven of his team-high 19 points in the quarter to give the Filipinos a 58-47 lead at the end of the third period.
Gao and six-foot-four point guard Nong Jie led a big 9-0 rally for the home team at the start of the fourth to cut the lead to 58-56 with 7:16 remaining.
Deas answered with six straight points to put the lead to 64-56 before the Chinese responded with an 11-4 run behind the exploits of sweet-shooting Hu Bin to cut the lead to 68-67.
After Dylan Ababou scored with the shot clock expiring to give the RP 5 a 70-67 lead, Gao converted on a three-point play off a foul by Greg Slaughter with 1:03 remaining to tie the score at 70-all.
Barocca then took charge.
The Far Eastern University diminutive point guard playing in his first international tournament, scored on a crucial jumper to give the Philippines a 72-70 lead with 47 seconds to go. After a split charity by Hu on a foul by Mac Baracael, the Chinese had a final chance to take the lead after a botched play by the RP 5.
But Ogie Menor stole the ball from Hu, setting up Barocca for a lay-up to give the Smart-RP squad a 74-71 lead with 32 ticks remaining.
Gao then scored another split free throw with 15 seconds remaining before Barocca was fouled to peg the final score.
Deas led the team with 19 points and three assists, Barocca added 18 points, Ababou chipped 15, while Slaughter contributed nine points, four blocks and four rebounds.
“It is hard to play before a hostile crowd and under these conditions. But this victory is truly special. After all, it’s not every day that you win against China in its own turf,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala.
“We are happy for the progress of this young team. But there is still a lot of work ahead,” he added.
The team, backed by Smart and outfitted by Nike, is slated to compete in the 2009 Southeast Asian Games in Laos, 2010 Asian Games in China and 2011 International Basketball Federation (Fiba) Asia Men’s Championship qualifier for the London Olympics.
With an average height of six feet and six inches, China expectedly dominated the boards, 44-33, but the RP team made it up with tenacious defense, limiting the Chinese to only two-of-15 shooting from three-point range and forcing 14 turnovers.
The Filipinos also shot 48 percent from two-point range and were 15-of-21 from the line even though the Nationals were charged with 10 more fouls, 26-16.
China was led by Gao with 32 points, 11 boards and 4 assists while Hu added 15

THERE’S no such thing as Christmas truce for Serbian Rajko Toroman and Filipino coaches.

Yeng Guiao and Franz Pumaren, two of the most successful mentors in the country today, raised doubts if Toroman’s recent victory in Guangxi, China, was enough proof that he has something that no local coach could offer in handling the national team in international tournaments.

“First, let’s congratulate them,” said Guiao, one of the advisers of the Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines (BCAP) and a known critic of Toroman’s insertion in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ (SBP) grand plan of returning to the Olympics in 2012.

“But it does not mean that we will not be able to do that if a Filipino coach had handled the team. ’Yung level of tournament, no doubt kaya ng Pinoy ’yan,” Guiao added.

Toroman led a rag-tag RP 5 to the title against Li Ning squad of Guangxi, 76-72, in the first China-Asean CBO men’s invitational tournament on Sunday.

The team was composed of players in the national developmental pool formed by SBP to be the source of talent for the country’s quest of clinching a slot in the 2012 London Olympics.

Pumaren also doubted the quality of the tournament that Toroman’s squad ruled as it did not really test the real capabilities of the Serbian mentor.

“Look at the quality of the tournament. Even Singapore gave the Chinese team a scare. Tapos ipagmamalaki mong tinalo mo ang Macau at Brunei. Even our high-school teams here can beat Macau and Brunei,” said Pumaren.

The La Salle mentor, who is not a member of BCAP, agreed with Guiao that a Filipino coach can get the job done in the China joust.

“It’s really hard to tell kung may bago nga siyang [Toroman] ipinakita because that’s not a quality tournament,” Pumaren added.

Guiao echoed: “We cannot judge him at that level of tournament na Asean lang. They did not beat the regular team of China or the Middle East countries.”

“The main principle here is kaya rin ng Filipino coach ipanalo ang team sa tournament na ’yon,” Guiao stressed.

BCAP, under its president Chito Narvasa, has been firm in its belief that a Filipino coach could lead the country to the Olympics.

But Narvasa did not go any further in criticizing Toroman.

“I think MVP [Manny Pangilinan] has cleared up that issue,” said Narvasa. “A Filipino is it [who will handle the team in case the Philippines qualifies in the Olympics].”

Pangilinan, the SBP president, said Toroman, officially appointed as project director, will just be there to help lay out the program and a Filipino coach will take over when the time comes—international competition.

SBP executive director Noli Eala said the developmental pool is also being groomed to represent the country in the 2009 Southeast Asian Games in Laos, 2010 Asian Games in China and the 2011 International Basketball Federation Asia qualifier for the London Games.

I'm a fan of Yeng's ability to make the most out of nothing with the Red Bull team. However, I don't like Coach Yeng's soft spot for profanities and his other antics on the court but this statement easily takes the cake.

As for Bigote Franz - Franz is one of the best we have but his decision to abandon the ship is something I cannot forget.

Indeed, Pinoy crab mentality as its best.

At least Guiao had the decency to congratulate Toroman's team before issuing his standard-issue critique.

As for "Catch the Next Flight Back to the Big Dome" Pumaren, his conduct has been so unprofessional of late - and his words border on outright treason.* Can't believe the stuff that spews from his mouth..he's the most bitter of the sour grapes!!!* That line about "Tapos ipagmamalaki mong tinalo mo ang Macau at Brunei..." is a blatant dig at Eala's text messages updating Filipino fans about the then ongoing tournament scores.* I guess there's some unwritten rule out there that says that a fired coach has to act with the fury of a woman scorned and the temperament of a spoiled brat.

For someone who walks the Iran walk(out), Franz really talks the talk.* They say be careful what you think, they become your words.* Be careful of your words..they become your actions.* And be careful of your actions..they become your destiny.

We've heard Pumaren's words and seen his actions.* Is it his destiny to win the Universiade in Serbia?* Maybe so.* If not, he can always reason that it's a "quality tournament"...so unlike the China-ASEAN CBO Men's Invitational. (sheeeeesh!)

Before I forget, Happy New Year to everybody.* And to Coach Toroman, congratulations to you sir.* You may not have introduced any new "technology" in your first full tournament, but at least you didn't abandon our young Filipino players when they needed guidance.

Not every Filipino coach can provide even that simple requirement.

dada naman ni yeng at franz. just remmember the rp youth team in iran. iniwanan. at kay yeng, sayang ka kala ko pa naman marunong ka idol pa naman kita. di ka mananalo sa eleksyon sa mga ginagawa mo. and wag mo kayang e-discourage ang team nila. pinoy ka ba?
