SSC completes sweep
Mb.com.ph 12/01/08

By FRANCIS SANTIAGO

The journey to the top was long and perilous for San Sebastian College, but the reward was sweet, satisfying and special.

After three straight failed attempts, the SSC belles finally reached the apex of success, beating the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses,16-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21, to win their first-ever Shakey’s V-League crown in four conferences before a huge crowd at The Arena in San Juan City.

Things did not start the way the SSC belles wanted it to be after losing the opening set.

But their burning desire to win the only championship missing from their trophy room fired them up, taking the next three sets to complete a magical season.

The SSC belles won their fourth straight NCAA title early this month.

Their NCAA championship was a major achievement for the school but nothing tops winning the Shakey’s V League title.

SSC coach Roger Gorayeb and her bunch of courageous players, felt they were in "heaven" after wrapping up the match.

Again, they leaned on the brilliant leadership of Suzanne Roces and the firepower of Joy Benito and league MVP Laurence Anne Latigay for the sweep of the best-of-three championship.

They took Game 1 in straight-set, 25-21, 25-19, 26-24

Benito was in superb form, registering 21 points, while Latigay was at her usual sharp form by adding 17 kills.

And when the war was over, the SSC belles leapt, shouted and hugged each other in sheer delight as this was the culmination of a special season that will etch their names as among the champions in the five-year-history of the league.

"Masayang-masaya ako. Matapos ang apat na conferences, nakuha na rin namin," said Gorayeb, smiling from ear to ear. "They (players) deserve this."

"Masarap yung feeling. Kasi parang nakabawi na kami sa mga frustrations sa mga nagdaang taon," said Gorayeb referring to the defeats they had against La Salle and UST.

Actually, they failed twice against UST in the finals.

UST, who is tied with La Salle for the most number of titles with three each, had a chance to extend the match when it took a 21-20 lead on a thunderous spike by Aiza Maizo.

But the SSC Belles charged back with 5-foot-9 Roces unleashing a running shot before UST bungled an offensive thrust and Benito launched a lethal down-the-line to steal the lead, 23-21.

In the ensuing play, UST made an offensive play, but another error by Caballejo moved SSC to the match point, 24-21.

In a fitting coronation, Roces hit an ace to seal the victory that saw the boisterous SSC crowd explode in wild celebration.

-Congratulations Coach Roger and and the lady stags! it'l be a hard task to defend the title next season (ncaa and v-league) with the departure of 3 key players. Latigay, Ancheta, and Devanadera will Graduate this semester. However, we still have Mj pepito and the vastly improved Benito. Here's a treat for you guys* ;D

UST Lady Tigers square off against SSC Lady Stags in Shakey's V-League opener

April 18, 2009 --- The Shakey’s V-League kicks off its sixth season on April 19 with a fitting opener pitting the last conference’s finalists and two of the league’s toughest teams in a twinbill expected to draw a banner crowd at the Flying-V Fil-Oil Arena (formerly The Arena) in San Juan City.

US Ambassador Kristie Kenney makes the country’s premier women’s volley league’s opener doubly significant as she graces the inaugurals where she, being a sports buff herself, is expected to share her thoughts on women power in sports, particularly the steady rise of women‘s volley in the country through the Shakey’s V-League.

Ms. Kenney has graced a number of sporting events here, including the PBA, the UAAP and the NCAA, endearing her to a nation so enamored with sports and her presence is expected to further lend prestige to the league which has generated so much interest with its high-powered volley action and thrilling duels the last few years.

San Sebastian College, a four-time NCAA champion which snapped a long title drought in the league with a victory over University of Santo Tomas in the last conference’s title clash late last year, battles the Espana-based squad at 4 p.m. in an early clash of the fancied teams in the league sponsored by Shakey‘s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision.

Ateneo-OraCare takes on Adamson, winner of last season’s first conference, in a 2 p.m. duel expected to go down-to-the-wire with the Lady Eagles, boosted by OraCare’s entry as the team sponsor, raring to showcase their form following a rigid two-week training in Thailand.

The parade of the eight competing teams ushers in the opening rites at 1 p.m. with the Cardona Rizal Musical Ensemble doing the invocation and singing the National Anthem while providing a special number at the latter part of the program.

The late Leo Prieto Sr., the founding commissioner of the PBA and the man behind the International Family Food Services, Inc. (Shakey’s), will also be honored while Ms. Guia Gomez, mother of San Juan City Mayor JV Ejercito, will give the opening remarks.

Laurence Ann Latigay of SSC, the MVP of the last conference, will lead the oath of sportsmanship along with skippers of the various teams, including Angela Benting of Adamson, Kara Acevedo of Ateneo, Maureen Penetrante of St. Benilde, Rachel Ann Daquis of FEU, Syvie Artates of Lyceum, Rysabelle Devanadera of SSC, Cathy Barcelon of UP and UST’s Aiza Maizo.

Ricky Palou, Sports Vision president, will introduce Ms. Kenney while Leo Prieto Jr., president of IFFSI, will declare the sixth season of the league, backed by Accel, Mikasa and OraCare, open.

Format is a single round robin elims with the top four teams advancing to the quarterfinal round where they will be joined by top provincial teams Univ. of San Jose-Recoletors and Univ. of St. La Salle-Bacolod. The top four teams will advance to the semis.

The Ateneo-Adamson clash will be aired on Monday on NBN-4 starting at 2 p.m. while the SSC-UST clash will be shown on Tuesday.

SSC spikers gain finals; FEU forces playoff

MANILA, Philippines - San Sebastian College marched to its fifth final appearance in the Shakey’s V-League by sweeping the undermanned Adamson side in their Final Four series while Far Eastern U repulsed Univ. of Santo Tomas to force a sudden death for the other final berth at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

Thai import Jaroensri Bualee frolicked in the continued absence of Nerissa Bautista and Joanna Botor-Carpio, firing 18 hits while Laurence Ann Latigay added 17 points for the Lady Stags, who dethroned the Falcons with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 romp.

“We were able to cash in on the absence of their two guest players,” said SSC coach Roger Gorayeb, whose wards also scored a straight-set 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 win in the first game of their best-of-three series.

The victory thus kept the Lady Stags’ bid for a second straight crown in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza after winning last year’s second conference title over the Tigresses.

Angela Benting made 13 hits while Jill Gustilo tossed in 11 points for Adamson, which reeled in the absence of Bautista and Botor-Carpio, who were with the RP team competing in a beach volley tournament in Vietnam.

But while SSC advanced, UST stumbled with a loss to a gutsy FEU squad as the Lady Tams fought back from a first-set setback by taking the next three in hard-earned fashions, 16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23, earlier.

Rachel Anne Daquis blasted away 13 kills, including one that shattered the 23-all count in the fourth set then the Tams clinched the victory on an error by UST skipper Aiza Maizo, ending the 1:39 encounter and giving the Morayta-based spikers a shot at a first-ever stint in the final.

The Lady Tams were out-spiked and out-blocked by the taller UST side but made up for this with superb reception and digs while drawing big points off their serve to turn back the fancied three-time champions and keep their championship hopes alive in the league organized by Sports Vision and backed by Accel, Mikasa, Mighty Bond and OraCare,

UST, which took the opener of their best-of-three series, 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, last Thursday, and FEU dispute the other final slot at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

For live webcast of the league, log on to www.v-league.ph. Matches are also televised on NBN-4 starting at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Daquis finished with 16 points while Cherry Vivas came away with 11 attacks and wound up with 12 points.

SSC shocks UST in V-League finals opener

MANILA, Philippines - San Sebastian College shocked favored University of Santo Tomas, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19, to move a win away from the Shakey's V-League Season 6 title on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan.

Guest player and Thai reinforcer Bualee Jaroensri teamed up with team skipper Rysabelle Devanadera in leading the Lady Stags' offense and finishing off the Tigresses in just an hour and 18 minutes.

Suzanne Roces, Laurence Ann Latigay and Analyn Joy Benito also contributed immensely for the Lady Stags, combining for 33 markers as SSC dealt UST's first straight-set defeat in the conference.

With San Sebastian's all-around defense working for them, the Lady Stags limited the Tigresses' points production with only guest player Mary Jean Balse posting double-figure production with her 16 points.

UST star player Michelle Carolino was limited to just nine points as the Lady Stags moved closer to bagging back-to-back titles in the tournament.

“Everybody played well. They all stepped up in the finals," said SSC coach Roger Gorayeb. “We may have lost twice to UST this conference, but we won the game that mattered most."

Setter Charisse Ancheta had only one point but produced 79 excellent sets, mostly for Bualee and Devanadera as the Lady Stags took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series.

“We controlled their main spikers while we did well in our reception," said Gorayeb.

The Lady Stags could end the series and snare the title on Sunday's Game 2 at the same venue. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV

Volleyball: Consistency vs defense — key to Shakey’s V-League victory
September 22, 2010 10:09 am
SSC’s Thai import Jeng Bualee (right) and teammate Melissa Mirasol along with Adamson’s Lourdes Patilano (center), Pau Soriano and libero Angelica Vasquez will be the players to watch in Thursday's sudden death.

MANILA, Sept. 21 (PNA) — San Sebastian-Excelroof coach Roger Gorayeb said the key to their title aspirations is consistency. For Adamson mentor Dulce Pante, its defense.

“If we could play consistently aggressive and continue to stay focused from start to finish, we have a strong chance of winning a championship again,” said Gorayeb, after steering the Lady Stags to a four-set win Sunday that forced a winner-take-all match for the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 second conference crown.

The Lady Falcons, on the other hand, vowed to stick on their defense, which anchored their impressive run in the season-ending conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza, including a sweep of the quarters and their three matches with the Stags.

“Our main strength is our defense. If we could find a way to impede their attacking game, we’ll have a chance,” said Pante, who like her counterpart is a veteran, multi-titled volley coach.

Both coaches are also expected to come up with adjustments heading to the rubber match set at 4 p.m. Thursday with odds just about even between two teams with contrasting styles.

After three failed bids against the Falcons, the Lady Stags finally won in a game they could not afford to lose, unleashing a furious attack to carve out a 24-26, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 victory in Game Two of their best-of-three series at The Arena in San Juan City.

Thai import Jeng Bualee turned in a 27-hit performance, including 26 on kills that pierced through Adamson’s net and floor defense. Analyn Joy Benito, guest player Suzanne Roces and Elaine Cruz provided added firepower, scoring 19, 13 and 11 hits, respectively.

The Lady Falcons collectively tried to slow down the power-hitting Bualee and the rest of the Lady Stags but failed to sustain their first-set win the way they did in Game One when they shackled the Stags with a rock-solid net defense and superb court coverage to eke out a 25-13, 25-17, 30-32, 21-25, 15-13 win.

Guest player Nerissa Bautista, Paulina Soriano and Michelle Laborte tried to make things happen for the Lady Falcons but their combined 49-hit output proved short against a determined SSC side.

“We have to play defense while making sure our attacking game also works,” said Pante.

Focus will also be on the top players in the conference backed by Accel, Mikasa and Excelroof and organized by Sports Vision, including Roces, who bagged the coveted MVP award, along with Bualee (best scorer), Soriano (best blocker) and Adamson’s Angelica Vasquez (best digger) and Angela Benting (best receiver).

Other awardees were Lyceum's Mary Jean Balse (best attacker), Rachel Anne Daquis of FEU (best server) and Ann Tabafunda of Lyceum (best setter) with the conference’s MVP to be named after the sudden death. (PNA) vcs/LOR
