MANILA, Philippines—Rizal Technological University leaned on Rodney Santos and a major third-quarter blast to stop Patts College of Aeronautics, 93-84, Monday in the 16th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) men’s basketball tournament at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym.

Santos, namesake of the popular Barangay Ginebra standout, buried 16 points to pace the Blue Thunders who now share top spot with defending champion Arellano University Chiefs at 3-0.

The Chiefs notched their third win Friday at the expense of the Olivarez College Sea Lions, 87-78.

The Blue Thunder opened the second half with eight triples to pull away for good after a 42-39 halftime lead.

Santos sank the last of his three treys with only three seconds left in the third canto that gave the Blue Thunders a 74-59 advantage.

“OK na iyung (We have a good) outside shooting,” said Blue Thunders coach Arlene Rodriguez, who used to be a PBA and national team coach. “Kailangan na lang naming palakasin ang aming gitna (What we have to work on is our inside plays.)”

In other matches, Universal College needed an extra period to turn back Technological Institute of the Philippines, 75-67, to improve to 3-1 while Philippine School of Business Administration bested La Salle-Dasmariñas, 87-77, and raised its mark to 1-1.

Mac Montilla had 27 points, including two triples and a drive with 1:04 to go that shoved the UNC Golden Dragons to a 72-66 lead.

Back-to-back titlist Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College are being tagged as the favorites in the 16th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) basketball tournament which starts on Friday at the EAC Sports Complex.

Majority of the coaches from the 10 teams who attended the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum Tuesday are considering the Chiefs and the Generals as the teams to beat this season.

“Definitely ‘yung defending champion,” basketball legend and Philippine School of Business Administration (PSBA)-Quezon City coach Philip Cesar referring to the three-peat seeking Chiefs.

“Arellano and Emilio Aguinaldo College,” said Rizal Technological University’s Arlene Rodriguez.

Arellano coach Leo Isaac said that the school is hell bent on taking their third straight title but downplayed what others are saying about the strength of the Chiefs.

“Huwag kayong basta-basta magpapa-niwala sa mga ‘yan, nagpapadehado lang sila. Nililigaw lang kayo ng mga ‘yan,” said a smiling Isaac. “But definitely, we will try to go for a three peat. Hopefully, makagawa tayo ng ganitong klase ng record.”

The Chiefs are backstopped by Orlando Daroya and Gio Ciriacruz while acquiring the services of Harvey Igtos from the Asian College of Science and Technology (ACSAT), which took a leave of absence for this season.

The Generals, this year’s host, are seeking to return to glory as they parade a new coach in Gino Manuel, in lieu of Nomar Isla, who was promoted as EAC representative to the NCRAA board.

Isla, treasurer of the league, was also in the forum along with NCRAA president Tisha Abundo of PSBA-QC, auditor Benjie Hernandez of PATTS College of Aeronautics, secretary Cesar Hagos of Olivares College, coaches Mel Alas (PATTS), Bong Arroyo (Techological Institute of the Philippines), Yong Garcia (Universal College of Nursing) and Luz Ricardo, sales representative of Molten and Mikasa, the NCRAA’s official ball.

EAC takes on TIP to start a busy four-game bill on Friday at 10 a.m. Other matches pit Olivarez College against La Salle Dasmarinas (11:30 a.m.), UCN vs. PMMS College (1 p.m.) and RTU opposite CCM (2:30 p.m.)

The other events of the NCRAA are volleyball, swimming, beach volleyball, athletics, table tennis, chess and badminton.
