* * *SANTO DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – The M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos began the formal defense of their Liga Pilipinas National Championship with a hard-earned 87-84 triumph over the host Ilocos Sur Bravhearts on Day One of the Ilocos Sur Leg of the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II Wednesday evening (January 28) at the Santo Domingo People’s Center.

* * *The tight contest produced five ties and six lead changes until the 4:54 mark of the third period when Bruce Dacia scored on lay-up that gave the Ninos of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Yayoy Alcoseba the lead for good, 54-53.* Suddenly, Ilocos Sur guard Marvin Yambao was slapped a technical foul for undercutting the airborne Dacia, resulting in two free throws by Woodraw Enriquez.* Ball possession returned to the Ninos and Ron Capati added another basket, 58-53.

* * *Egged on by the huge crowd, the Bravehearts of Gov. DV Savellano and Coach Gino Manuel kept the game close behind Yambao, Elbert Alberto and Pertus Santos.* However, Dacia sank a triple followed by crucial charities by Mark Ababon and Danny Aying that ensured the win with 41 ticks to go, 86-80.

* * *Conference I Most Valuable Player Marlon Basco topped the Ninos with 15 points and 11 rebounds followed by Aying with 13.* Yambao led the Bravehearts with 14.* Santos and Ismael Junio chipped in 13.

* * *This week’s games are part of the province’s Kannawidan Ylocos Festival.* Liga Pilipinas is made possible by Smart, ML Kwarta Padala, Air 21, Burlington, Nature’s Spring, Molten and Accel and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

* * *In the first game, the Trace-Laguna Stallions of Erwin Genuino and Coach Nomar Isla gave the Smart-Pampanga Buddies and their newly-appointed head coach Allan Gregorio a rude beating, 81-60.* Gregorio replaced Coach Aric del Rosario after last week’s debacle wherein the Buddies placed last in their own home leg.

* * *Slimly on top by four at the half, 34-30, the Stallions broke the game wide open in the third period, behind the eight points of Robert Sanz and four each from Ricky Ricafuente and Glen Bolocon to erect a 57-41 cushion entering the final period.

* * *The Buddies never recovered from there as Samuel Ekwe and former Buddy Marlon Legaspi put the finishing touches on the victory.* Two free throws by Alex Angeles gave the Stallions their biggest lead, 75-53.* Legaspi punctuated the game with a buzzer beater.

* * *Sanz led the Stallions with 16 points while Ekwe had 12 points and 12 rebounds.* Emmerson Oreta paced the Buddies with 12 markers followed by Ryan Cruz with 11.

SANTO DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – The Trace-Laguna Stallions escaped with a 63-61 win over erstwhile fellow undefeated team M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos on Day Two (January 29) of the Ilocos Sur Leg of the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II at the Santo Domingo People’s Center.

Trailing by 10 with four minutes, 50-60, Bruce Dacia strung up nine unanswered points to allow the Ninos of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Yayoy Alcoseba to threaten, 59-60, and a minute left. Mark Ababon then bungled a chance to grab the lead as he drove hard against the outstretched arms of 6’8” Samuel Ekwe, with the ball landing into the hands of Axel Doruelo who was quickly fouled by Ariel Mepana with seven seconds to play.

Doruelo then made both free throws, 62-59. In the ensuing play, Ababon surprised everyone by slashing to the basket for an uncontested lay-up, leaving less than a second on the clock! Doruelo was fouled at the buzzer, adding one more free throw for the final count.

The Stallions of Erwin Genuino and Coach Nomar Isla controlled the game and led for good from midway in the second period when RB Mangahas and Alex Angeles starred in a 12-0 run that resulted in a 30-23 cushion.

Angeles led the Stallions with 18 points and six assists followed by Mangahas with 10. Ekwe was held to only a basket but grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots. Dacia was the lone Nino in twin digits with 20. Four of his teammates chipped in six markers apiece.

In the second game, the Smart-Pampanga Buddies arranged a knockout game with the Ninos for the second championship seat by spanking the host Ilocos Sur Bravehearts, 93-79. Both teams are tied with similar 1-1 win-loss cards. The Buddies’ win also placed the 2-0 Stallions in their second straight leg finale in the tournament made possible by Smart, Air 21, Burlington, Nature’s Spring, Molten, Laptop Phoneshop and Accel and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). The Bravehearts dropped to 0-2.

The Buddies made their move in the second half, giving new coach Allan Gregorio his first Liga victory. Don Camaso and Nino Gelig combined for 11 points as the Buddies led entering the final period, 61-53.

From there, the duo continued their scoring spree, this time joined by Jemal Vizcarra to push the Buddies further ahead. Josh Urbiztondo clustered four straight points to give the Buddies their biggest lead, 89-72, entering the final two minutes.

Gelig powered the Buddies with 18 points. Camaso added 17 points and nine rebounds. Nat Cruz topped the Bravehearts of Gov. DV Savellano and Coach Gino Manuel with 22 followed by Chris Baluyot and Chris Santos with 10 each.

Meanwhile, last night’s games at the start of the Zamboanga Leg saw the Misamis Oriental Meteor winning over the Manila Capitals, 66-60. In the main game, the Harbour Centre-Taguig Batang Global fought back to hack the 70-64 win over host Edding-Zanorte Babami.

based on the "Liga Pilipinas Schedules, Results and Format" thread, the teams of Laguna and Pampanga won their games to arrange a championship showdown for the Ilocos Sur Leg.* But what are the scores of those games?

* * *SANTO DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – For the first time in Liga Pilipinas history, the M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos failed to make a leg championship game after the defending National Champions fell to the Smart-Pampanga Buddies, 90-86, on Day Three of the Ilocos Sur Leg of the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II at the Santo Domingo People’s Center.

* * *The Buddies’ win arranged a one-game showdown with the undefeated Trace-Laguna Stallions, 83-69 victors in the main game against the host Ilocos Sur Bravehearts.* The Buddies under Coach Allan Gregorio finished with a 2-1 win-loss record while the Ninos of Michel Lhuiller and Coach Yayoy Alcoseba dropped to 1-2 in the tournament generously supported by Smart, Air 21, Burlington, Laptop Phoneshop, Nature’s Spring and Accel and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).* This week’s games are also part of the province’s Kannawidan Ylocos Festival.

* * *Khiel Misa, whose parents are originally from Cebu, delivered a lethal three-pointer with less than 30 seconds left in the contest that gave the Buddies an 88-83 lead.* The Ninos then threw away the ball resulting in an outlet pass to the waiting Emmerson Oreta for the unmolested shot and the final nail on the Ninos’ coffin, 90-83.* Bruce Dacia settled the final tally with a triple at the buzzer.

* * *Earlier, Marlon Basco threatened with a triple of his own at the 38-second mark, 83-85.* The close contest was marked by nine deadlocks and eight lead changes.* The Ninos fought valiantly from a 59-66 deficit after three periods behind Basco and Stephen Padilla.

* * *Terrell Theophile led the Buddies with 16 points via eight out of 11 shooting from the field.* Misa followed with 15 points, seven assists and two steals.* Oreta also added 15 points.* Basco and Padilla paced Cebu with similar stat lines of 18 points and six rebounds, with Padilla adding four assists.

* * *In the main game, the Stallions of Erwin Genuino and Coach Nomar Isla swept the three-game preliminary round and gained a two-Liga Tour point bonus over the host Bravehearts of Gov. DV Savellano and Coach Gino Manuel.* The Bravehearts finished 0-3, continuing the bad fortune that has hounded the host teams in the three-week old conference.

* * *The Stallions raced to a 17-9 advantage after one period and it was an all-Laguna show from there as they maintained their double-digit lead.* That gave Coach Isla the luxury of resting his regulars and giving his role players more court time in preparation for the final game with the Buddies.

* * *Luis Palaganas led the Stallions with 14 points while Jan Villaver added 13 points and 10 rebounds.* Nat Cruz topped the Bravehearts with 19 points and five rebounds followed by Ismael Junio with 13.* The Stallions thus remained perfect against the Bravehearts, adding to their two games in the General Santos City Leg on the league’s opening week.

* * *Meanwhile, the simultaneous games at the Zamboanga City Coliseum saw the Misamis Oriental Meteor spank the host Zanorte Babami, 89-76, in the featured contest.* In the first game, the Manila Capitals reasserted their mastery of the Harbour Centre-Taguig Batang Global, 85-72, in a rematch of last week’s Pampanga Leg.

* * *SANTO DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – The Smart-Pampanga Buddies captured the Ilocos Sur Leg of the 2009 Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference II Saturday night at the expense of the Trace-Laguna Stallions, 82-77, in overtime at the Santo Domingo People’s Center.

* * *Terrell Theophile strung up five crucial points in the extra period to give the Buddies the championship and 10 Liga Tour points.* The 6’6” Theophile shattered the game’s last deadlock with a jumper, 79-77, followed by a big triple that iced the game at the 29-second mark, 82-77.* The Saint Gregory University alumnus was eventually adjudged as the Leg Most Valuable Player, bolstered by his good performance throughout the weeklong tournament sponsored by Smart, Accel, Air 21, Burlington, Molten, Laptop Phoneshop and Nature’s Spring and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

* * *Regulation play ended at 72-72.* Trailing, 60-71, the Stallions leaned on a 12-1 windup, capped by a Ricky Ricafuente triple and a steal and lay-up by Rob Sanz in the final minute.* Sadly, the Stallions could only muster five free throws in the overtime.

* * *The Buddies of Coach Allan Gregorio spoiled the bid for back-to-back leg crowns by the Stallions of Erwin Genuino and Coach Nomar Isla, winners of the General Santos City Leg during Liga’s opening week.* The Buddies also scored some redemption from their last place finish in last week’s leg at their own home the University of the Assumption Gym.

* * *Khiel Misa topped the Buddies with 18 points and 10 assists.* Theophile finished with 17 points.* Samuel Ekwe powered the Stallions with 18 points, including two triples, plus 22 rebounds.* Sanz chipped in 15.

* * *In the first game, the M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos salvaged Third Place and three Liga Tour points by walloping the host Ilocos Sur Bravehearts, 80-63.* This marks the first time in Liga history that the Ninos have failed to take home a leg championship after winning all their four leg assignments last conference.

* * *Coach Yayoy Alcoseba flew back to Cebu City earlier in the day and handed over the coaching reins to assistant coach Mike Reyes.* The Ninos vented their frustrations on the hapless Bravehearts of Gov. DV Savellano and Coach Gino Manuel, keeping the hosts winless.

* * *Woodraw Enriquez presided over the blowout with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists followed by Bruce Dacia with 13.* Elbert Alberto and Ismael Junio paced the Bravehearts with 11 points each.

* * *Meanwhile, over at the Zamboanga City Coliseum, the Misamis Oriental Meteors swept the preliminary round of the Zamboanga City Leg by stopping Harbour Centre-Taguig Batang Global, 81-80.* In the main game, the Manila Capitals kept the host Edding-Zanorte Babami winless, 76-68.* The Meteors (3-0) and Capitals (2-1) will meet for the leg championship on Sunday.

* * *Liga Pilipinas will next play at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City as the Quezon Red Oilers host the Bravehearts, Zanorte and Iloilo Mang Inasals from February 4 to 7.* This will mark the Conference II debut for both the Red Oilers and Mang Inasals.
