UAAP-NCAA All Stars slated Nov. 16

Thursday, November 6, 2008

The country’s premier collegiate leagues join forces for the Samsung Bantay Bata 163 UAAP-NCAA All-Star at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City on Nov. 16 for the benefit of abused and neglected children under the care of the Bantay Bata 163 program of ABS-CBN Foundation.

The event, to be aired live by ABS-CBN Sports on Studio 23, will have the juniors all-stars parade the future of Philippine basketball at 2 p.m.

The UAAP team will be coached by Jamyke Jarin, who steered the Ateneo Blue Eaglets to the championship against the FEU Baby Tamaraws, whereas the NCAA team will be coached by Raymond Valenzona, son of the legendary Turo who led the San Sebastian Staglets to the championship over the Letran Squires.

Halftime of the juniors game will see the top four long-range shooters vying for the three-point shootout crown which La Salle’s Jvee Casio won over San Beda’s JR Tecson last year.

The Slamdunk Challenge is set at halftime of the seniors game. Defending champion is Letran’s Rey Guevarra who scored a perfect 10 to beat San Beda behemoth Sam Ekwe in last year’s finals.

The All-Star seniors will pit the teams assembled by UAAP champion coach Norman Black of the Ateneo Blue Eagles and by NCAA champion coach Frankie Lim of the San Beda Red Lions.

Since FEU will be here in Cagayan de Oro City from Nov.14-16 to play in the PCCL Zonals, does this mean that there will be no tamaraws who will play in the All Star game?

Note: Baracael, Fernandez, and Adolfo have all decided that they will go with their team here in CDOC.

So ibig sabihin si Marc Barroca and Mac Baracael hindi mgalalaro sa PCCL fro FEU? Aww....Sad naman. Kawawa rin pala ung mga players ng FEU kasi super daming league sinalihan nila this year sabay sabay ang mga schedules....

Anyway, thanks for the info :)

it shows how important the PCCL has become already. pride in becoming the 1st true national collegiate champion trumps an exhibition.

Masyado naman kasi delayed na yan Bantay-bata.

Dapat kasi midway during the college tournament or right after the UAAP/NCAA season.

I doubt if these can make money for the foundation if only a few would watch the games live.

Tama! Super delayed na yung All Starts this year. Dapat nga di ba yung intial schedule was on Oct.

This is not a game for pride or anything but it is about helping the kids of Bantay Bata. Kaya kung gusto niyo tumulong sa Bantay Bata and also watch an "All Star" game between UAAP and NCAA. Pumunta kayo dun. . . .

Haaaay naku. . . .

Dapat wala na lang...

First of all midway during the college tournament risks injury to the players. Its only a 14 game elimination round then lalagyan mo pa ng exhibition match. I'm not applauding injuries but I rather see a player go down in game that really matters than an exhibition game with no bearing for any team.

The best time for this kind of matches is really at the end of the tournament when everything at sake has already been owned.

The NCAA was represented by the JRU band.

The halftime show featured performances by the UP Pep Squad and the JRU Pep Squad, both champions in their own leagues.

Guys, why did Ekwe skip the slam dunk event? Obviously, Sudan Daniel was no match for Espiritu. Pero Guevarra could have won if he made his dunk.

Time constraints prevented the slam dunk contestants from making another dunk attempt.

By the way, ang sexy ni Alexis Go kahapon!

UAAP All-Stars bag 2008 Bantay Bata title
by inboundpass

The UAAP All-Stars, banking on the heroics of Jervy Cruz, flexed their muscles to defeat the NCAA All-Stars, 91-80, in the 2008 Samsung UAAP-NCAA 163 Bantay Bata Showdown at the Ynares Sports Arena in Kapitolyo Pasig City last November 16, 2008.

6-foot-6 UST stalwart and 2007 MVP,had 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to bag the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors and avenged their 78-83 loss to the NCAA contingent last season behind RJ Jazul’s impressive performance.

Cruz outplayed the NCAA front line especially in the second half when he converted a three-point play with 5:17 minutes left in the third period for a 70-59 lead.

Meanwhile, Elmer Espiritu of the UE Red Warriors won the slam dunk contest, while Clark Bautista ruled the three-point showdown.

UAAP's deep bench too much for NCAA selection

By Abac Cordero
Updated November 17, 2008 12:00 AM

The only problem UAAP All-Stars coach Norman Black had during the game was how to give his players equal playing time.

“That’s the only problem because they’re all very talented,” said the Ateneo mentor who coached the UAAP All-Stars past the NCAA All-Stars, 91-80, last night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The finest talents from the country’s top two collegiate leagues suited up for a worthy cause, one that would benefit ABS-CBN Foundation’s Bantay Bata 163, a nationwide, child-welfare program.

Black had the likes of Jervy Cruz, JV Casio, Rico Maierhofer, Elmer Espiritu and his very own Rabe Al-Hussaini to go up against coach Frankie Lim’s Carlo Jazul, Ogie Menor, Sam Ekwe, Borgy Hermida and James Sena.

But in the end, it was the UAAP All-Stars that played better as a team. They led by as many as 18 points in the first half, 36-18, then allowed their rivals to equalize at 49, before pulling away anew in the final period.

“It’s a good experience for a coach to be able to handle so much talent,” said Black, adding that he was also happy to be part of the cause. “That’s the whole reason we are all here and I’m happy that all of the players showed up today.”

In the juniors division, the UAAP All-Stars also won, 90-78.

After the game, ABS-CBN Foundation donated P200,000 to Bantay Bata 163, a child welfare program of the media giant that not only rescues and rehabilitates sick and abused children but also provides shelter, therapy and quality homecare.

Samsung also had a big hand in the event and donated three 22-inch LCD screen to Bantay Bata.

Clark Bautista of Santo Tomas pulled off a big surprise when he ruled the 3-Point Shootout, besting a field of players with bigger names, like Carlo Jazul of Letran, James Martinez of UE and Casio, last year’s winner.
