TWO teams, one of them three-peat seeking Arellano University, loom as the top picks for the title when the 16th edition of the National Capital Region Athletic Association comes off the wraps this Friday, with four games in basketball ushering in hostilities at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Sports Complex.

Majority of the coaches of the 10 competing squads pointed to the Chiefs and former champion EAC Generals as the teams this time.

Experience and bench depth separate the two from the rest of the field, according to some team officials who graced the weekly PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Ave. branch yesterday.

"Definitely, ‘yung defending champion," basketball legend and PSBA-QC mentor Philip Cesar replied when asked which team is favored to win the championship.

"Arellano and Emilio Aguinaldo College," Rizal Technological University’s Arlene Rodriguez said.

Leo Isaac, architect of Arellano’s two straight title wins, admitted the school’s serious bid to make it three in a row, but downplayed what the rest of the coaches said about the strength of the Chiefs.

"Huwag kayong basta-basta magpapa-niwala sa mga ‘yan, nagpapadehado lang sila. Nililigaw lang kayo ng mga ‘yan," Isaac said, smiling, in the session sponsored by Shakey’s, Accel, Brickroad gym and Aspen spa and MedCentral Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center.

"But definitely, we will try to go for a three-peat. Hopefully, makagawa tayo ng ganitong klase ng record."

A busy four-game bill banner Friday’s opener with EAC taking on UAAP in the first game set at 10 a.m.

Other matches pit Olivarez College against La Salle Dasmarinas (11:30 a.m.), UCN vs. PMMS College (1 p.m.) and RTU opposite CCM (2:30 p.m.)

Aside from basketball, other NCRAA events to be held this school year are volleyball, swimming, beach volleyball, athletics, table tennis, chess and badminton.

Back for another tour of duty with the Chiefs are swingman Orlando Daroya and top gunner Gio Ciriacruz. The team also acquired Harvey Igtos from Asian College of Science and Technology, which took a leave of absence this season.

Only St. Francis of Assisi College has so far scored three straight title wins, doing it in 2000 to 2002.

Dethroned by the Chiefs two years ago, the Generals, this year’s hosts, are aching to get back at their tormentor as they parade a new coach in Gino Manuel in lieu of Nomar Isla, who has been named EAC representative to the NCRAA board.

Isla, now the treasurer of the league, also graced the public service program along with NCRAA president Tisha Abundo of PSBA-QC, auditor Benjie Hernandez of PATTS College of Aeronautics, secretary Cesar Hagos of Olivares College, coaches Mel Alas (PATTS), Bong Arroyo (TIP), Yong Garcia (Universal College of Nursing) and Luz Ricardo, sales representative of Molten and Mikasa, the NCRAA’s official ball.

A new coach and a Malaysian recruit will boost the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals’ bid in their opening match with the Technological Institute of the Philippines Engineers today at the start of the 16th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) men’s basketball tournament at the EAC Sports Complex.

Gino Manuel will debut as the Generals’ new mentor in their 10 a.m. showdown with the Engineers, taking the place of long-time coach Nomar Isla.

“It’s going to be an interesting matchup. They have good coach in Bong Aquino,” said Manuel, who will try to bring the Generals to their second finals stint in three years.

The Generals will again be led by Cameroonian standout Romeo Fotue and 6’9” Malaysian rookie center Chee Hao.

The Olivarez College Sea Lions take on the De La Salle-Dasmariñas Patriots later at 11:30 a.m., while the Universal College of Nursing Golden Dragons battle the Philippine Merchant Marine School Mariners at 1 p.m.

The Rizal Technological University Blue Thunders clash with City Colleges of Manila at 2:30 p.m. in the league backed by officials balls Mikasa and Molten.

PAGCOR chairman Efraim Genuino will be the league’s guest of honor. He makes the ceremonial toss with NCRAA officials led by league president Tisha Abundo of the Philippine School of Business Administration and Nomar Isla of host EAC.

Arellano thwarts UCN in rousing NCRAA start

Heavy favorite Arellano University walloped Universal College of Nursing, 62-54, Monday to set in motion its three-peat bid in the 2008 National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) basketball tournament.

Sweet-shooting Adrian Celada fired 15 points while Jordan Melano, Orlando Daroya and Jerome Agustin scattered 14, 11 and eight points, respectively, to power the Chiefs to a rousing start in the tournament it ruled the last two years.

“It’s nice to start the tournament with a victory,” said Arellano coach Leo Isaac. “If we could continue to stay in shape, disciplined and work harder, we’ll do okay.”

The win by the Chiefs came a few days before they face the UCN dribblers, who topped the Universities and Colleges Athletic Association champions, in another duel, this time in a bigger stage in the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Champions League’s Sweet 16.

Drawing strength on a free-flowing offense centered on PBL veteran Daroya, Arellano U shocked 2006 UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas in the zonal qualifiers a month back.

With a talented roster, Arellano should be the favorite to win a third straight NCRAA crown that should add up to the Legarda-based school’s glowing accomplishments as they bid to become the newest member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Arellano University showed its high school program is a big plus as it smashed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 96-39, recently to jumpstart its title bid in the juniors division of the National Capital Region Athletic Association.

Kym Pagayunan paced the Junior Chiefs with 25 points while Erwin Catapang, Kim Balabao and Jerben Sagmit fired 15, 13 and 11 points, respectively, in a win that underscored Arellano’s main strength when it bids for a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Arellano board chair Francisco P.V. Cayco said they are banking on their high school program as key to their aspiration as the newest member of the 84-year-old league starting next year.

“We have a big grassroots program because our high school population is numbering more than 5,000,” said Cayco. “We’re using this as our base in identifying talents not just in sports but in academics as well.”

The Chiefs have branches in Mandaluyong, Pasig City, Malabon City, two in Pasay and on Legarda, Manila, where it houses over 1,500 high school students.

Val Cayco, the school’s marketing chief who also personally oversees the athletic program along with athletic director Leo Isaac, said they’re banking on their high school to edge out other applicants.

“Of the three most important factors for NCAA entry, we know we have an edge in one, which is our high school. As we all know, we have the biggest among the five applicants in this regard,” said the younger Cayco.

While emphasizing its secondary program. Cayco said they will not neglect the other two factors – one, requiring the applicant to pay an entrance amounting to about P7 million and the other requiring a mandatory participation in all sports events in the first three years as member.

“We are ready to comply with all the requirements,” said Cayco.

Joel Prudente scored only four points, including an unexpected layup at the buzzer to lift the De La Salle University-Dasmariñas Patriots past the PATTS College of Aeronautics Sea Horses, 84-83, yesterday in the 16th NCRAA basketball tournament at the Olivarez College gym.

Prudente’s heroics at the buzzer came following successive misses by top scorers Rico Rivera and Kit Licudine. The Patriots picked up their second win in five games and improved their chances of making it to the semifinals of this cagefest sponsored by Mikasa and Molten Balls and www.philspike.com.

Earlier, Rizal Tech High School won by default over Olivarez High School to join the Arellano University Baby Chiefs in the lead of the four-team junior division.

The defending champion Arellano University Chiefs and title contender Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals put away separate foes last Friday to stay in contention for semifinal seats.

Orlando Daroya banged in a game-high 26 points for the Chiefs, who trounced the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunders, 119-72, to remain unbeaten after five games.

Romeo Fotue and Argel Mendoza sizzled with 27 and 21 points, respectively, as the EAC Generals prevailed over the Olivarez College Sea Lions, 87-77.

Defending champion Arellano University and Rizal Technological University turned back separate rivals yesterday to remain ahead in the junior division of the 16th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) basketball tournament at the RTU gym.

Kim Pagayunan spearheaded the Baby Chiefs’ bid over Emilio Aguinaldo College, 82-33, as they seized the solo lead with their fourth straight triumph.

Carlo Sabangan hit 19 points for the Baby Thunders, who walloped the Olivarez College Sea Lion Cubs, 87-73, in the cagefest, sponsored by Mikasa and Molten Balls, and www.philspike.com.

With their clean record, the Baby Chiefs stayed on track for a third straight championship. They have, in fact, notched their 15th straight win, counting their 11-game sweep last year.

Generals stay in contention
by Peter Atencio
January 13, 2009
Manila Standard

THE Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals weathered a big scare from the La Salle-Dasmariñas Patriots and escaped with a 76-67 victory yesterday in the 16th National Capital Region Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the San Andres Gym in Manila.

Substitute coach Gerry Esplana felt relieved after Cameroonian cager Romeo Fotue forced a turnover in the last 24.6 seconds after the Patriots threatened, 66-69. Fotue then scored two of four insurance baskets at endgame.

“Ang maganda dito ay nanalo kami. Pero, iyung consistency ng team, iyun ang gusto kong makita,” said Esplana, who called the shots in the absence of Gino Manuel.

With their seventh win in nine games, the Generals stayed in contention for the third semifinal slot. They now have a chance to join the defending champion Arellano University Chiefs and Universal College Golden Dragons in the next phase of this cagefest backed by Mikasa and Molten Balls and www.philspike.com.

Esplana, who retired from the Philippine Basketball Association in 2004, was tapped to help out with the Generals, while Manuel was busy with Ilocos Sur team playing in the Liga Pilipinas.

Fotue, who led with 19 points, forced a turnover that halted a 7-0 Patriots’ run as La Salle-Dasma closed in by three at 66-69 in the last minute. His charities and another pair from Argel Mendoza allowed the Generals to stay out of trouble, 74-66.

Rico Rivera made 28 points for the Patriots, while Louie Chy had eight, including the six he scored when the Patriots trimmed the Generals’ lead by three in the final minute.

Esplana will still be around when the Generals tackle the Leo Isaac-mentored Chiefs in a very important 2:30 p.m. game tomorrow at the Arellano University Gym.

Meanwhile, Mike Dumas unloaded 21 points for the Olivarez College Baby Lions, who whipped EAC, 88-44, in the junior division.

^with the basketball and volleyball teams, yes, hindi na sila sumasali sa NCRAA for years. The most recent I could recall na nagparticipate sila in minor events is during the 2004-05 season. Since don na lang sila active, ang usapan na lang diyan is kung nagmiminor events parin ba ang NCRAA o naging parang second sem UCAA siya (basketball and volleyball).
