why is it that it's only best of 5? best of 7 ala NBA format could have been more exciting. cebu will just run rings against this taguig team and i can see a sweep.

With the line-up of the Ninos plus homecourt advantage the taguig global will have a very slim chance to win against the ninos...

Kung madami ex pros sa Taguig, mas madami sa Cebu. Mga ex pros na gamit din kahit panu. Yun iba nga sa MBA pa galing. Advantage yun for Cebu. For Taguig naman its youth, dami na din sla ex pros na kakatanggal lang and mga bata na may potential mag pros. This will be a very interesting match up. For the coaching side its Yayoy Alcoseba and Jude Roque. A match up of old and new tactics.

Cebu Niños take game one

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Rising splendidly to the challenge of a most worthy opponent, the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-backed Cebu Niños plastered back Harbour Centre-Taguig, 98-78, last night to take Game One of the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Finals last night at the rocking Cebu Coliseum.
Game today
(Cebu Coliseum)
6 pm - Taguig vs. Cebu

The Niños, who hold homecourt advantage in the best-of-five championship series backed by Rexona, Accel, Burlington, Molten, Metathione, Nature Spring, Pagcor Sports and Laptop Phoneshop gun for a commanding 2-0 lead today before flying to the C.P. Tinga gym in Taguig for Game Three and, if necessary, Game Four.

Cebu will host Game Five if the series goes the distance.

Displaying an unwavering resolve and an arsenal full of firepower, the Niños broke away from a tight first half and never looked back, roaring to a 79-63 lead in the third quarter behind Jojo Tangkay and Ian Saladaga.

Applying heavy defensive pressure, Cebu used a 13-6 run at the start of the second half to open a 62-51 advantage with 6:12 left in the third quarter, giving the Niños breathing space after a choking first half.

Despite the heavy presence of the fiercely-devoted Cebu fans, the Niños needed a late three-point shot from Saladaga to keep the Batang Global at bay after two quarters, 49-46.

Shooting 5-of-6 from the floor, Taguig raced to 12-2 start as Marvin Ortiguerra and Paul Reguerra drained three-pointers each, quieting the thousands of Cebu fans.

But Tangkay clustered eight straight points, including two triples, to fire up the Niños who grabbed the lead, 26-24, on Danny Aying’s 3-pointer basket.

Guard Mark Ababon then ignited the Niños’ transition game, orchestrating their fast break and giving Cebu its biggest lead so far, 46-39, at the 2:21 mark.

Bombeo and Erick Rodriguez sliced the lead at 46-44 with 1:18 remaining before Saladaga buried a 3-pointer and Rodriguez a two-point basket heading to the intermission.

Saladaga had 12 points in the second quarter, coming off the bench. He finished with 19 points even as four other Cebu players dished out twin figures. Ron Capati had 14 points, followed by Woodrow Enriquez with 13, Tangkay 12, and Bruce Dacia 11.

Both teams made five triples each in the opening half with Cebu getting a higher percentage (5-of-10) against Taguig’s 5-of-12. Taguig, however, had a better shooting clip, 20 of 33 (61 percent) to Cebu’s 17-of-34.

The Niños dominated the board 20-11 and scored more on fast breaks 14-8, while Taguig had more assists 11-8 and scored more on turnovers 7-5.

The Niños enjoyed their biggest lead at 24 points, 98-74, on back-to-back treys by Jayford Rodriguez with 41 seconds left to play.
The scores

NOTES: Ervic Vijandre, a member of the Philippine baseball team, played for Taguig Batang Global. Unknown to many, Vijandre is the real life girlfriend of popular TV actress/commercial model Marian Rivera. Their romance blossomed when they were still high school classmates at St. Francis of Assisi in Cavite....Liga commissioner Noli Eala gave a brief speech during halftime, thanking the Cebuano fans for their support to the community-based league and assuring everyone of a bigger and better Liga second conference this November....Cebu top playmaker Woodrow Enriquez was seen limping out of the hardcourt in the final 5:20 mark of the contest. Enriquez sprained his left ankle and is a doubtful starter in today’s Game 2. (EBV)

Game Tomorrow (C.P. Tinga gym, Taguig) 6 p.m. -- Taguig vs. Cebu

CEBU -- M.L. Kwarta Padala-Cebu moved within a win of sweeping the 2008 Smart-Liga Pilipinas Finals Tuesday after beating Harbour Centre-Taguig, 78-69, at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The Ninos, who hold homecourt advantage in the best-of-five championship series -- backed by Rexona, Accel, Burlington, Molten, Metathione, Nature Spring, Pagcor Sports and Laptop Phoneshop -- hope to complete their demolition of the Batang Global in Game Three Thursday at the C.P. Tinga gym in Taguig.

Taguig will host Game Four, if necessary, with the fifth and deciding Game Five returning to Cebu where the Ninos are nearly invincible.

"Our defense held their inside game. Although the shooting percentages are low, we clipped their offense with good defensive game," said Cebu coach Yayoy Alcoseba.

"What is important now is how we will close the series. As much as possible we will end the series in Game 3 but we know they are capable of giving us a tough time also."

Cebu took the half, 37-30, using a 17-1 run early in the game after trailing, 8-3.

Paul Reguerra buried consecutive three-point shots to spark Taguig’s opening salvo. But as in Game One when they used a tightened defense en route to a 98-78 rout, the Ninos put the clamp on the Batang Globals’ scorers to pull ahead, 23-11, at the end of the period.

Cebu established a 16-point lead early in the second quarter before Jonathan Aldave, Marvin Ortiguerra and Boyet Bautista combined for 11 straight points to cut the deficit, 31-28, a little less than three minutes remaining in the half.

Gerry Cavan, picking up the role essayed by Ian Saladaga in the opener, sank back-to-back triples, however, as the Ninos protected a 37-30 lead at the intermission.

SCORES:

CEBU 78 -- Capati 13, Dacia 13, Ababon 11, Aying 8, Padilla 8, Enriquez 6, Cavan 6, Mepana 5, Saladaga 4, Enriquez 4, Basco 3, Berami 3, Tangkay 0, J. Rodriguez 0, Bucao 0.

Ninos rise to challenge of Taguig
http://www.malaya.com.ph/sep17/spor4.htm

CEBU. – Rising to the challenge of a worthy opponent, ML Kwarta Padala-Cebu turned back Harbour Centre-Taguig 98-78 Monday to take the opener of the Smart-Liga Pilipinas Finals at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The Ninos, who hold home court advantage in the best-of-five championship series backed by Rexona, Accel, Burlington, Molten, Metathione, Nature Spring, Pagcor Sports and Laptop Phoneshop, was battling the Batang Global in Game 2 at press time Tuesday.

"Grabe ang shooting nila noong first half," said Cebu coach Yayoy Alcoseba. "We really had to tighten our defense in the third and fourth quarters to gain control.

"Pero wala pa ‘to. Malayo pa. Alam mo naman ang Taguig, they can easily come back. Remember, they even swept Misamis Oriental. Malakas na team yon. So we’re still cautious."

Displaying an unwavering resolve and an arsenal full of firepower, the Ninos broke away from a tight first half and never looked back, roaring to a 79-63 lead in the third quarter behind Jojo Tangkay and Ian Saladaga.

Taguig tries to stop bleeding
http://www.tempo.com.ph/news.php?aid=40869

Game today: (C.P. Tinga Gym, Taguig)
6 p.m. – Taguig vs. Cebu

TAGUIG – Back in the confines of the C.P. Tinga gym, Harbour Centre-Taguig hopes to finally stop the bleeding today as it guns for a breakthrough win against M.L. Kwarta Padala-Cebu in the 2008 Smart Liga Pilipinas finals.

The Batang Global host Game 3 of the title series which the Niños currently lead, 2-0.

The host team fell to a deep hole Tuesday night when it lost for the second straight time, 78-69, at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Now the Batang Global try to survive and avoid being swept by the Niños in the maiden finals of the regional basketball tournament sponsored by Rexona, Accel, Burlington, Molten, Metathione, Nature Spring, Pagcor Sports and Laptop Phoneshop.

But with their spirit and confidence soaring following that Game 2 victory, Cebu intends to finish the series outright.

"What is important now is how we will close the series. As much as possible we will end the series in Game 3 but we know they are capable of giving us a tough time," said Cebu coach Yayoy Alcoseba.

Game 4 of the series, if necessary, will also be held at the C.P Tinga gym.

The Niños won the series opener at home, 98-78.

Behind a big 17-1 in the first half, the Niños stayed on top for good and took with them a 37-30 lead at the half.

Another scoring spurt to start the third period had the host team taking a 53-37 lead midway into the quarter.

The Batang Global countered with a 14-5 run bridging the third and fourth quarters respectively, to come to within 58-54 before the Niños strung seven unanswered points to keep the visiting team at bay.
