if ABS-CBN won PBA coverage, I would encourage GMA-7 to get liga pilipinas coverage that would be an interesting TV network ratings war :D

even if PBA has the best players, liga pilipinas will give good competition for TV ratings due to regional pride in the provinces.

Not a bad idea. Liga would need as much exposure to develop a fan base.

kaso pag ABS-CBN baka sa Channel 23 itelecast ang PBA, di ata maganda reception sa provinces unless cable connected ang TV set, pag GMA malamang QTV itelecast ang Liga the same outcome din, di rin ma access sa provinces.

i don't know about SOLAR and MAKISIG channels

It's a good one but hopefully that won't exploit the league into another MBA just to use them as a ploy to rival the other network, e di mawawala na yung concept na gusto ng Liga na hindi sila magiging competitor ng PBA.

marmand
05-03-2008, 08:53 PM
Exposure lang. It will help gather sponsors to ease the financial aspects of the league.

nastrans
05-03-2008, 10:20 PM
Yes, exposure would be good along with the sponsor, at least noticed agad ang Liga. But kung agad agad ilalabas mo agad siya as a competitor to a possible ABS-bound PBA, well it may end up as a guinea pig kung ganoon ang intention.

Liga Pilipinas will be introduced to fans and media at a “soft” opening in Cebu and Taguig this weekend.

Liga president Noli Eala said a four-day preseason tournament for southern teams will be held in Cebu starting tomorrow. A similar four-day affair will be staged for northern squads in Taguig starting Sunday.

Teams will be allowed to use players of their choice without getting clearance from Liga officials. But once the regular season begins on June 11, each team will be required to enlist at least eight homegrown players in a 14-man roster.

“The preseason games will be a gauge of how ready we are,” said Eala. “It’s our dry-run. We’ll also test our pool of referees under Perry Martinez’ supervision. We’ve hired 28 referees for the south and 18 for the north.”

Eala said NBN will be the carrying network for the preseason games, providing air time and production. Two networks will likely be tapped for the regular season – NBN and possibly, IBC. “We’ll be using broadband transmission, not microwave facilities, so we expect to be more efficient,” he added.

2 TV stations to show Liga action

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:40:00 06/16/2008

MANILA, Philippines—Eight teams will kick off action in the Liga Pilipinas tour phase which begins regional basketball competition on Wednesday.

The Ilocos Sur Bravehearts will host South pre-season winner Cebu Niños, Quezon Red Oilers and Taguig Batang Global.

Over in the South, the Misamis Oriental Meteors will be challenged by Baguio Victory and pre-season runners-up Pagadian Explorers of the South and Laguna Stallions of the North.

The Pampanga Buddies and Ozamiz Cota will host Week 2 starting June 25.

Liga Pilipinas has also finalized the two-network coverage of its maiden season with government networks NBN-4 and IBC-13.

Rico Meneses, Liga head of marketing, inked the deal with Joey Isabelo, NBN general manager and Bob del Rosario, IBC-13 head.

The two networks will have equal coverage of the 14-leg Tour phase, playoff games and the National Championship for 13 hours per week. One game per day on each network will be aired starting with the first two legs on June 18 in Ilocos Sur and Misamis Oriental.

“Liga is delighted and excited about this TV deal,” Meneses said.

The main game of the two legs simultaneously played in the tour phase will be shown on the same day but on a delayed basis—6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. over IBC-13 and 10:30 p.m. to 12 midnight over NBN-4. Steve Silva, contributor

it is because of poor TV ratings which discouraged advertisers. With that, any TV production would just be bound to lose money. unless you can have the people choose to watch basketball over that of korean telenovelas or fantaseryes or even tagalized cartoons, it would be a business disaster to a have a TV coverage at the moment. Let's see in the next few months.

Liga games will start airing on Solar Sports starting Friday, i believe. If i am not mistaken, Liga wanted BTV but because there's already an overload of basketball (of course) on the latter channel. Still, Solar has got the rights to air the Liga Pilipinas games.

Here's what i found online but not really in-depth:

"We're definitely looking forward to an even more exciting conference," said Eala, adding the tournament will run for about four months comprised of 11 pocket tournaments and more than 100 games to be aired over Solar Sports and replays on Viva Primetime.

Liga Pilipinas eyes live TV coverage

MANILA, Philippines - The vital elements for Liga Pilipinas to replicate the success of the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association in terms of crowd support are now coming together.

Besides four additional teams in Conference 4, Liga Pilipinas CEO and president Noli Eala said the league would try to cut out a deal for the live coverage of the games with TV5.

The idea to show the matches in real time was hatched after the group of PLDT big boss Manny V. Pangilinan reportedly acquired majority of the shares in the television network.

For starters, Eala said they plan to strike an agreement with TV5 to broadcast live feeds on weekends or during the championship game of each provincial leg while Solar Sports, Liga's present television partner, would continue airing the matches on weekdays.

``The prospects for Liga are promising,'' said Eala. ``We hope to reach out to as many basketball fans as possible by airing some of the games live, particularly the finale of each leg.''

Live coverage, marketing and a regional framework similar to the National Basketball Association (NBA) brought tons of success to the MBA almost a decade ago as far as attendance in the venues and fan interest are concerned.

With a solid fan base, the MBA had even threatened to supplant the Philippine Basketball Association as the premiere professional league in the country.

But the MBA folded up in 2002 due to the six-figure monthly salaries of its players and the high cost of maintenance, transportation and billeting, among other reasons.

The Liga has the same regional flavor although the format is different. Each team in the league, which applies Fiba (International Basketball Federation) rules on its matches, will play host to every leg in the tournament.

A leg normally runs for a week and culminates in a championship game, cutting down the cost of transportation and other expenditures since all of the teams will play in one venue.

Eala said Iloilo, Ilocos and Tagaytay-Cavite have expressed interest on joining the 10 ballclubs in Conference 4 slated late January next year while Liga officials would encourage another team to make it a 14-squad roster.

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos, mentored by Yayoy Alcoseba, bagged the Conference 3 crown at the expense of Conference 2 champions Misamis Oriental Meteors for a historic 21-game sweep.

I would like to ask why Viva Prime has not yet aired the Liga Pilipinas Super Leg games. Most of the games Viva Prime are showing are the games of the leg phase which have been aired many times already.

Paging Ronnie Nathanielsz and Noli Eala!

Di ba dati may intention ang TV5 na kunin ang Liga Pilipinas? I might consider this team an option given their experience in covering the PBA and ABL.

TV5 is launching some new shows today. I doubt if that station has the airtime for sports coverages now. Perhaps Solar TV and BTV should step in and cover the Liga especially if it does merge with the PBL.
