The University of the Philippines Pep Squad bucked the pressure and went ethnic and more to run away with its second straight UAAP Samsung Cheer Dance Competition crown before a record crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Maroons did everything, from mixing tribal songs and dances with difficult stunts and acrobatics, to having their locks cut – Mohawk and ethnic style – before capping their sterling performance with a human replica of the university’s Oblation to retain the crown they won last season.

UP won it handily with a score of 93.3 points, way ahead of the Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe, which also finished runner-up for the second straight time with 85.3 points. Far Eastern U Cheering Squad took third place honors with 83.9 points.

“We’ve been having problems because the mounting pressure of being the defending champion and the Centennial host and it caused some problems along the way,” said UP co-captain Angelica Sison, a communications research senior in the din of the celebration before a record 23,443 paying patrons.

“But we found ourselves believing in each other. We basically re-focused our purpose in this competition. Ultimately, we enjoyed every step, every dance, every stunt. It’s fun, fun, fun.”

The team, composed of a total of 80 competing and non-competing members took home the top purse worth P195,000 plus Samsung MP3s to 25 members.

UST and FEU received P120,000 and P80,000, respectively.

Among the stunts performed by UP were three pyramids, some straddle tosses, one-man pop-off catch flip transfer for twisting dismount, pull downs, a four-man full twisting transfer, tumbling passes and a tick-tock stunt.

UP iced the victory with sweeping effect using a huge green and maroon-colored cloth that when it was removed, two letters – U and P – and the human oblation emerged.

“The oblation idea was the brilliance of a last-minute thinking. Coach Lalaine Perena thought of it,” said Sison.

“We even hired a choreographer in RM Garcia who worked in Disney in Hong Kong, He came home to put this thing together for us,” said Sison. “We also had to cut our hair for the team because this was the idea of coach Lala.”

MANILA, Philippines—A tribal-inspired theme highlighted by a trademark oblation formation catapulted the University of the Philippines on top for the second straight year.

Throwing in a mix of creativity and gymnastic moves, the UP Pep Squad captured anew the UAAP Cheerdance championship in front of a record 23,443 crowd Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

“I think it’s our theme that made us different,” said UP co-captain Angelica Sison. “There was a story and a flow in our routine—the preparation for war, the gathering of troops, the practice for battle.”

The Maroons, who foiled the bid of former five-time champ University of Santo Tomas to reclaim the crown, pocketed P195,000 cash and Samsung MP3 players.

“There was a lot of pressure,” said Sison. “All eyes were on us.”

The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, who ruled the contest from 2002 to 2006, settled for second place, worth P120,000, followed by the Far Eastern University Cheering Squad which bagged P80,000.

Coach Lalaine Pereña and choreographer RM Garcia conceptualized the routine of the UP squad.

Ateneo de Manila University finished fourth, followed by Adamson University, University of the East, De La Salle University and National University.

UP pep squad retains crown

University of the Philippines Pep Squad produced another awe-inspiring performance yesterday to retain its title in the 2008 Samsung UAAP Cheer-dance Competition yesterday before a record crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

Highlighting its tribal war-theme performance by forming an oblation that saw the crowd of 23,000 explode in approval, the 25-man squad beat fierce rival University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe and FEU Cheering Squad to capture its fifth overall crown since the event was established in 1997.

For its feat, the UP Pep squad received P195,000 cash prize plus MP3 players for each member.

"I think yung pagkakaroon ng theme, sobra ng pagkakaiba from the other routines," said UP Pep Squad co-captain Angelica Sison, one of the oldest members of the cheerleading group.

Sison’s fellow member Francis Fleta was named as the Samsung Stunner.

The win was a fitting reward for the Lalaine "Lala" Perena-mentored squad as UP is celebrating its centennial anniversary.

With a tribal war story and a "Tribo Sugod" sign to show off during the routine, Sison believed the theme was one of the factors that decided their victory.

"Sa routine namin may preparation for war, gathering of troops tapos yung sugod effect parang makikita sa whole routine namin na may storya in a tribal way," 22-year old Sison, a graduating communication research student who is a candidate for Cum Laude this year, said.

UST, which was dethroned as champions last season after winning five straight title since 2002, overcame a slow start to claim second place for the second straight year/

FEU, which performed with a fire-blazing theme, captured its seventh third-place finish.

The Ateneo de Manila Blue Babble Battalion placed fourth for the second straight year followed by Adamson Pep Squad and University of the East. De La Salle Animo Squad and the National University Pep Squad wound up seventh and eight, respectively.

Hard work, concerted effort pay off for UP Pep squad

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Hard work and sacrifices paid off for the spirited UP Pep Squad, which romped away with the Samsung UAAP Cheer Dance crown for the second straight year at the Araneta Coliseum last Sunday.

Sure, the rest of the field also worked hard and made a lot of sacrifices in preparing and performing their respective numbers. But the Diliman-based squad upstaged its seven other rivals with a stirring performance meticulously drawn up not only by the team but the entire school community as well.

It was simply a collective effort.
From the conceptualization of putting up the tribal team and choreographing of the dances and stunts to the last minute inclusion of a human oblation all added up to the winning formula – a five-minute number that should be remembered for a long, long time.

The Maroons had the alumni to thank for.
“It was our coach Lala Perena who thought of almost everything, including the the last-minute idea of putting a human oblation in our performance,” said Angelica Sison, co-captain of the back-to-back champion squad.

A former team member – RM Garcia, a choreographer who now works abroad – even came home and helped in the team’s preparation – for free.

“Ultimately, it was an effort by everybody, the whole of the UP community that included many alumni who have done good after they graduated,” she added.

There were also personal sacrifices made by members of the squad, including having a uniform haircut, one that would make everyone look ethnic to go with the team’s theme.

“It’s hard for 12-13 girls to have their hair cut. But everyone cooperated,” said Sison. “We were also touched that the other non-competing members had the same haircut without the coach telling them to do so.” – Joey Villar
