MVP:* If UST made it to the final four, then this award would definitely go to Jervy Cruz.* *However, Rabeh Al-Hussaini might just get this award given the bonus stats he will get from the Ateneo wins.

Mythical 5:
Center-Rabeh Al-Hussaini
Forward-Jervy Cruz
Forward-Rico Maierhofer
Guard-Chris Tiu
Guard-Jvee Casio

Although Rab, Jervy, and Rico actually play center for their respective teams, I wouldn't be surprise if the UAAP classifies Rico and Jervy as forwards given their superior stats.* Ababou might just get in and replace Rico in the mythical 5.

Rookie of the Year:* Ryan Buenafe.* If Maui Villanueva is eligible for the award, this could be a tight battle between the two.

Defensive Player of the Year:* Although Ramos is the leading shotblocker this season, Nonoy Baclao might just get this award as he is the anchor of the Ateneo defense plus I think he has a better defensive rebound average compared to Ramos.* Personally, I feel Eric Salamat has a chance also being the steals leader or the league.

Sixth Man Award(is this given actually by the UAAP?): Rico Maierhofer.* Even though Salamat has been excellent for the Eagles, Rico's stats are far more superior than Eric's.

Most Improved Player:* Rabeh Al Hussaini no doubt!

Sportsmanship Award:* I initially thought Jervy Cruz would get this but I think he was called for an unsportsmanlike foul in the UE game so I guess this award is up for grabs amongst the players.* Mac Baracael might just win this! ;D

Best Flopper:* Ok na sana yung sinimulang thread, may dinagdag pang bitterness, insecurities and obvious flame. >:(

MVP: Rabeh Al-Hussaini (Ateneo) - Arguably the best stats, winning bonus included. I would have picked Jervy Cruz because of his stats, but his team's out of the Final Four, and Rabeh beat Jervy Cruz during both of their games. He has also been the anchor of the Blue Eagles' game.

ROY: Ryan Buenafe (Ateneo) - Simply the best rookie in terms of stats and impact on games. (Runners-up: Maui Villanueva of DLSU, Paul Zamar of UE, or Bautista of UST.)

D-POY: Nonoy Baclao (Ateneo)/Aldrech Ramos (FEU) - Both anchored their teams' inside defensive game with timely blocks, and both have also contributed through rebounds.

MIP: Rabeh Al-Hussaini. Hello?

Mythical 5 (this is a squad I'd like to see work together in case there's a UAAP vs. NCAA all-star game):

C - Rabeh Al-Hussaini (Ateneo)
F - Jervy Cruz (UST)
F - Rico Maierhoffer (DLSU)/Dylan Ababou (UST)
SG - JV Casio (DLSU)
PG - Chris Tiu (Ateneo)

Second Mythical 5:

- Rico Maierhoffer/Dylan Ababou
- Elmer Espiritu
- Nonoy Baclao
- Benedict Fernandez
- Andy Barocca

Sixth Man: Rico Maierhoffer (DLSU) or Eric Salamat (Ateneo) - Both have been essential players for both teams, who are able to mix it up and give them the spark needed to win their games.

Sportsmanship: Martin Reyes (UP) - Simply does what he has to do, with no extra motions or anything else. (Although I would have liked to give this to Jonathan Jahnke of NU, who's had to endure lots of heckling)

MVP: JV Casio
Runner-up: Rabeh Al-Hussaini
Jervy Cruz is out of the running IMHO because of team record, and both Al-Hussaini and Tiu have been instrumental for Ateneo being at the top this season. Casio has very good stats, is the leader of a Final Four team, and is perhaps the most dangerous individual player as well as being "more valuable" to his team than the two Ateneans. Plus, he is a Senior, which earns him some sympathy points over Rabeh, at least for me.
ROY: Ryan Buenafe
Runner-up: Clark BautistaAverage stats aside, he has been the best rookie talent and the most feared among this season's crop. Media votes will make him win.

Defensive Player: Nonoy Baclao
Runner-up: Elmer Espiritu
Was a hard choice at the end of the first round, but I think Baclao has been able to distance himself from the pack.

Mythical Five:
G JV Casio
G Chris Tiu
F Benedict Fernandez
F/C Jervy Cruz
C Rabeh Al-Hussaini
Obvious picks. They might put in Ababou or Maierhoffer over Fernandez, but I feel that there should be slot open for either an FEU or a UE player.

Second Mythical Five
G Andy Barroca
G Marcy Arellano
F Dylan Ababou
F Nonoy Baclao
C Rico Maierhoffer

Most Improved: Rabeh Al-Hussaini
Runner-up: Dylan Ababou/Dante Gonzalgo/Andy Barroca

Sixth Man Award: Rico Mairhoffer
Runner-up: Eric Salamat

Most Disappointing: Jonathan Jahnke, Japs Cuan (because I thought he would be the best PG this season, alas, injuries took their toll.)
Runner-up: Jerrick Canada, James Martinez (Wow, all point guards)

^Isn't Dante Gonzalgo the father and the actual player is Paul? ;D

Unless Casio pulls a keith agovida performance on thursday, I don't think he would win the MVP. Votes are only 20% while stats are 80%.

An even better Green Archer in Ren Ren Ritualo failed to win the MVP due to inferior stats. Rab may win the award but for most basketball fans, either Chris Tiu or JV Casio is the MVP this season. Anyway, whether the UAAP declares Rab, Chris, Jvee, or even Jervy, all these guys are deserving in my book.

stats from playoff games aren't considered in the MVP race. Casio pretty much pulled himself out of the race with that dismal 5pt performance last saturday.

^Sorry sir!* Thanks for the correction!

I remembered before, I think it was the 1999 season wherein UST and LA Salle played a playoff game. Before that, Enrico Villanueva was the stats leader. After the game, Don Allado eclipsed Enrico in the stats, thus helping Allado win the MVP.

iirc, in 1999, the season closed with Enrico on top of the stats race, followed by Ortiguerra and then Allado. But I guess the votes went Allado's way, and he won MVP. Ironically, Allado missed out on two games that year, but La Salle went on to win both (i remember questioning how valuable he was indeed given that they can win with or without him). To me, this goes to show that in the UAAP, selecting the MVP is defintely not rocket science, and cannot be determined solely by measurable means.

Ganyan talaga ang buhay. But look at mac mac score in the PBA now, parang import! ;D IMO MVP should really be a toss up between Casio and the Rabeh. Those two are the most important players in their teams, Al-Hussaini has the edge but i certainly hope Sir Jvee gets it. At the end of the day both of them epitomize the true essence of being an MVP. Great players and good people on and off the court.

i agree with this but only to a certain degree. If Chris decided to forgo his last playing year, I'm 100% sure that someone else would step up and take the lead. We lost so many on-court leaders the past few years, Villanueva, Tenorio, Fonacier, Intal, etc, but somehow, there would always be someone ready to lead the team. Now if that new leader would be as effective as Chris, ibang usapan na yan :D

but i for one would love to see Chris win MVP this season, but realistically, it looks to be a race between Rab and Jervy.

Rabeh will win over Casio if they're the only ones left to choose from as MVP.

Not only does Rabeh have superior stats, he's also been the best player the Blue Eagles have had this season. Chris Tiu gets nice shots, and does bail the team out from time to time. But Chris Tiu wouldn't be in a position to save the Blue Eagles in those games if not for the numbers Rabeh put up.

Casio? Inferior stats, terrible last game in the eliminations (a game where Rabeh was named, incidentally, best player of the game).

I see your point hear. But I think the same reason why Jervy will not be an MVP will be the same reason Dylan will not be part of the Mythical Team, and that is because UST was not able to make it to the Final 4 this year. Rico has put up pretty decent numbers. I think he is averaging a double double this year. I really like Dylan Ababou as a player, even more than Rico, but I just think Rico will be the one chosen in the Mythical Team over Dylan.

Ateneo sweeps MVP, top rookie honors
By Joey Villar, Philippine Star
Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Ateneo, a win away from bagging its first UAAP crown in six years, will have three more reasons to celebrate with another victory against La Salle tomorrow.

The league will officially fete Eagles Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Chris Tiu and Ryan Buenafe as three of the best performers in Season 71 in tomorrow’s awarding rites in Game 2 of the UAAP finals at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-6 Al-Hussaini, a Fil-Kuwaiti, is this year’s Most Valuable Player, Tiu a member of the Mythical First Team and Buenafe the Rookie of the Year.

“Yes,” said Ateneo board representative Ricky Palou when asked by The STAR if Al-Hussaini has clinched the league’s highest individual plum.

“I got the list of all awardees, and (Ryan) Buenafe is Rookie of the Year.”

Last year’s MVP Jervy Cruz of University of Santo Tomas and La Salle’s JV Casio and Rico Maeirhofer will join Al-Hussaini and Tiu in the dream first team cast.

“Imagine Al-Hussaini, Cruz, Maierhofer, Tiu and Casio together, that’s a dream team ,” Palou said.

Marichu Bacaro of UST and Mark Juruena of Adamson, meanwhile, will be named MVPs in the women’s and juniors’ divisions, respectively.

Studio 23, a UHL channel of television giant ABS-CBN which telecasts the UAAP and NCAA games, will also fete several others on its own, including Al-Hussaini (Most Improved Player) and Nonoy Baclao, also of Ateneo, (Defensive Player of the Year).

Studio 23 will also honor Tiu with a special citation and an all-Rookie team composed of Buenafe, Ateneo’s Nicolas Salva, La Salle’s LA Revilla and Joshua Webb and UST’s Clark Bautista.

Dapat hindi na lang pumili ng All-Rookie Team kung hindi rin naman makakahanap ng limang bata na nagka-impact talaga. Obviously, Buenafe should be there. I also can't disagree with Bautista and Revilla.... But Salva and Webb? Tingin ko, these two got in on reputation na lang. IMO, Jeric Fortuna made a bigger contribution to his team than these two.

Congratulations to all of the awardees this year, most especially those from DLSU (Casio, Maierhofer) and UP (Sadorra, Tolentino). :)

I do agree sir. parang unfair na di nasama si Jeric when in fact malaki naitulong niya sa USTe when Japs got hurt.

Huling nagkaroon daw niyan ay noong 2001. The members were Tenorio, de Guzman, Cardona, Robin and Abadia.

It's* probably the way the stats are computed.* Jeric may have played more minutes and had better numbers because of the longer exposure but there's probably a premium on wins that carries over to the individuals' statistical points.* This could have pushed their overall stats past Jeric's.

But even following this argument, I am in agreement that Salva and Webb's inclusion may be questioned.* Shouldn't Maui Villanueva and Paul Zamar merit more consideration with better stats than Salva and Webb and coming from teams with similar win-loss records? Assuming of course that they are both considered real rookies and qualified for inclusion.

Using the infamous Jai Reyes rule, Villanueva and Zamar are not rookies anymore.

I'd like to see Mac Baracael honored in some way, preferably with the sportsmanship award. This guy nearly died when he got shot, but insisted quite badly that he be allowed to suit up and play. He deserves a lot of respect for that.

from another thread here:

SEASON 71 END OF ELIMINATIONS PLAYER STATISTICS
Source: UAAP Elimination Round Statistical Summary Report distributed during the Final Four games

Rookie Watch (Total Statistical Points, Minimum 3 Games Played, September 6, 2008):

1. Buenafe (ADMU) - 36.5000
2. Villanueva (DLSU) - 32.1429
3. Revilla (DLSU) - 26.9231
4. Salva (ADMU) - 24.0000
5. Bautista (UST) - 23.7143
6. Chua (ADMU) - 20.6000
7. Fortuna (UST) - 20.2857
8. Bagatsing (DLSU) - 19.6923
9. Chandumal (DLSU) - 18.6667
10. Mendoza (DLSU) - 18.4286

i guess stats include won games incentives as one poster here mentioned/suggested.

looking at the rankings, the all-rookie team selections may have been spot on, with the exception of webb. surprisingly it is justin chua who should have been included but i guess the awards committee deemed it weird to award a player that was hardly seen on the court during the season ;D selection should have been awarded to fortuna instead.

He survived to play again. That's enough "reward" for one very, very lucky individual.

Award for sportsmanship? That's hilarious.

^And outrageous as well.

Sportsmanship? Mac Baracael gave a shoulder block to James Mangahas in the final four that resulted in an unsportsman foul for Baracael.

it's tantamount to saying it is the Freshman of the Year.

i think the UAAP should rename the award already. also add newcomer of the year as well.
