i think these kids deserve this thread. they are currently fighting for a final4 spot. Keith Agovida is their main guy who once scored 59 points, grabbed 10+ rebounds and 10steals. against LSGH last monday, he had 43 points in a losing cause.

In what had to be the highest scoring game in recent Philippine basketball history JRU came just short 119-120 in overtime against the Letran Squires in overtime. Regulation ended at a hot-shooting 103-all. Jo Saret almost saved the game for JRU with three straight treys in the last minute and a half of the overtime. But Noy Regis had the real chance to save the game with still eight seconds and change until he completely lost track of the time and where his teammates were as the clock expired. Light Bombers star Keith Agovida had a chance to win it all in regulation but tried to pull something fancy and lost the ball in the last nine seconds of regulation.

Keith Agovida had the ball in his hands in the last 9.6 seconds of regulation and had more than enough time to try and run a play to win it for JRU. Instead he pulled a behind-the-back dribble right into the hands of Letran's Kevin Alas, lost the ball, then subsequently was called for a holding foul on Alas. That would be Agovida's fifth and last foul. Jo Saret, Ric Madlangbayan and Jun Matias kept within striking distance of Letran in overtime but just could not get over the hump. Letran's superior size was telling as 6-foot-3 Squires centers Jeff Ongteco and Kar Khobuntin ruled the boards and the inside without Agovida and Louie Vigil around anymore.

JRU cager Agovida scores NCAA record of 82 points
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines -- Keith Agovida of Jose Rizal University's high school basketball team set the Cuneta Astrodome alight Friday with an NCAA record of 82 points in the Light Bombers' 127-49 massacre of Mapua.

What made the feat more remarkable was the fact that the 18-year-old Agovida did it in just 37 minutes on the floor.

"I thank my teammates and my coach for giving me the opportunities to score," said Agovida, not aware that his output was the highest in the league’s 84 years.

Agovida, who came into the match with a 31-points-per game average, made 36 of 49 shots and hit 10 of 16 free throws. He shot just one triple but missed. He also grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked five shots.

Agovida's output surpassed the previous record of 71 points by Letran's Erwin Bolabola established in the late 1970s, according to league officials.

The 6-foot-1 Agovida, a third-year student, already had 36 points by halftime and went on to drop 20 in the third and 26 in the final quarter.

His previous high was 57 points which he registered in the first-round meeting versus Mapua.

Despite Agovida's exploits, the Light Bombers remained third in the standings with an 8-4 card, behind four-peat seeking San Sebastian and Letran.

Mapua finished the season winless in 12 games.

What is the current scoring average of Keith Agovida?

It was another usual game in the NCAA juniors division with two teams enduring contrasting fortunes.

The JRU Light Bombers are aiming at one of the top two spots heading into the Final Four while the Mapua Red Robins (officially dubbed as Malayan High School of Science) are still a rebuilding team that is on the verge of suffering a winless campaign.

But for JRU star Keith Agovida, a skinny 18-year old, 6-1 big man, he took advantage of a weak opponent and some passes from his teammates to post a league record 82 points in JRU’s 127-49 rout of the Red Robins.

The feat he registered broke the league record of 71 points held by former Letran Squire Erwin Bolabola back in the late-1970’s but despite making a mark with this feat, Agovida still credited his teammates and head coach Boy de Vera.

Despite facing the lowly Red Robins, he still went out and played his usual game as he entered the game with a season average of 30.9 points. After the match, his production grew to a whopping 35.5-point clip.

It wasn’t the first time that Agovida had these numbers, as he also ripped the Red Robins for 59 points during the first round of the eliminations.

But today, he had his gigantic outputs of 23 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 20 in the third, and 26 in the final period to grab the record.

“Hindi ko po inexpect na mauulit, sa akin lang po binibigay yung bola,” said the third-year high school standout who is not eligible to play next season.

The win enabled the Light Bombers to post its seventh victory in 11 games with one more to play against San Sebastian on Monday. For Agovida and his teammates, all they want is an opportunity to play in the Finals, most likely against the Staglets and his counterpart Arvie Bringas.

JRU may have just served notice to the rest of the NCAA - the Light Bombers displayed clinical and clockwork play to turn back reigning NCAA and NSL champion San Sebastian 83 - 69 in the ongoing Nike Summer League.

Right from the get-go it was selfless and precision basketball for the Light Bombers, as they put on a virtual clinic on the early offense, the secondary break, precision passing, constant movement without the ball, quick help and recovery on defense, and relentlessness off both boards.

Jo Saret, arguably the best pointguard in the NCAA junior ranks, constantly found multi-talented forward Louie Vigil on a variety of alley-oops along the baseline. Saret also ran both the transition offense and the halfcourt sets with incredible vision and recognition, dishing off nifty pin-point assists even in traffic.

After taking a slight 40-34 edge into the lemon time break, JRU opened the pivotal third period with seven unanswered points for the 47-34 cushion. San Sebastian however would not just give up without a fight, as Jerome Delgado instigated a rally that cut that lead down to 62-58 late in the quarter.

Saret and Vigil responded with five clustered points to once again pull away at 67-58, and the Light Bombers were never threatened again.

Vigil led all scorers with 26 points to go with 10 boards, while Saret had 15 markers and 11 assists. Delgado led the Staglets with 16 points and four steals.

^ Coach Boy De Vera of JRU told me before the game started that they had not beaten San Sebastian for the last three years in any tournament. Looks like this was a big win in many ways for JRU then.

Keith Agovida apparently also has left JRU, since his academic woes were even heavier than expected. No one knows where he is at present, probably has gone home to his folks.

Light Bomber scores 89 points, sets new NCAA record
by inboundpass

JOSE RIZAL UNIVERSITY’S high school squad, the Light Bombers, rode on the 89 points scored by guard Joshua Saret en route to a 171-47 demolition job of the Angeles University Foundation Baby Danes in NCAA Season 85 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last July 22.

Saret’s 89 points, a new NCAA record, were accompanied by 11 rebounds, 12 assists and 13 steals. His point total broke that of ex-JRU Light Bomber Keith Agovida, who put up 82 points in a 127-49 rout of Malayan Science High School just last season. Incidentally, Saret and Agovida were teammates in Season 84.

Prior to the game, Saret was averaging 32 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.8 assists. In the Light Bombers’ last game, he tallied 58 in a 135-58 victory over Emilio Aguinaldo College.

Under Meneses, the Bombers should be a force next year since it would lose only James Sena, Mark Cagoco and John Agas to graduation while expecting to absorb Light Bombers Loui Vigil, the reigning NCAA high school MVP, Joshua Saret and John Yasa.

Hopefully the these Light Bombers will indeed stay at Kalentong. And if they elect to stay, hopefully hindi sila magaya sa former Light Bombers na si Carlo Lithuania at Raycon Kabigting.

It would be also interesting to know who will be named the next head coach of the Light Bombers.

I know that Coach Boy De Vera will be retiring before this year ends because he will be turning 65 years old this year.

It is will be sad to see Coach Boy hanging up his shoes. His program has produced the last 2 juniors MVP, 2 scoring champions, 2 best defensive players, 2 episodes of pinoy records in the last 2 years. He is one of the most efficient coaches I know, because the teams he handled, both in seniors and juniors, were constantly in the Final Four. And he has done that without the benefit of recruitment. Yes, Agovida, Vigil and Saret were walk ins. And Yasa, the #1 shot blocker in this years NCAA juniors division, could not even do push ups if you saw him 2 years ago.

I hope the next Light Bombers coach can follow if not surpass what coach boy has done for JRU. Coach Boy served the school for around 40 years.
