The Green Archers will hope to continue their winning ways this Saturday against the NU Bulldogs. Last time around, Peejay Barua saved La Salle from an early deficit to repulse the stubborn Bulldogs through his hot shooting from the trifecta region. NU's winning run was snapped by UE yesterday but it took a lot of toll since they walked away also wounded through injuries suffered by spitfire guards Jahnke, Luy, and Garcia. It will be up to Edwin Asoro to carry the cudgels for the Bulldogs to fill up the big scoring slack left by Jahnke who was playing superb in those back to back wins by NU against FEU and UP.

Aguilar and Ponferrada will be the usual suspects for NU's frontline and will be matched up against Walsham, Villanueva, and Mendoza. Mangahas might be assigned for quite some time to defend Ponferrada I guess since Ponferrada can also play the small forward spot. NU loves to play the zone as evident in our first round encounter. We were able to find gaps and spots in their zone defense through Barua's hot shooting and Mangahas' inside cuts for short jumpers. I am not sure if NU will decide to show another type of zone defense this time around to catch the Archers off-guard.

Both teams will play decimated as Atkins will still sit out due to his whiplash injury suffered in the UE game back in the first round but I think the Archers can exploit the possible weaker back court of NU if Jahnke and Garcia sits out this game. Our outside sniping and other zone breaking offensive plays should be ready so as we won't start flat and allow NU to build confidence to beat us in this game. The Green Archers should remember that it is still a tight race for the final four spot and coach Franz will be out for 2-3 games so it is important for us to win those ballgames that he is present to secure the twice to beat advantage as early as possible.

I also expect to see presence and extra minutes for Ferdinand to regain his form as well as Walsham to have their confidence back on track to prepare themselves for the FEU game next Saturday and on the big games coming against UST and Ateneo. Should we dictate the game the way we did in the first round, Lee and Chandumal will have their presence felt in the game as well. I hope we maximize this game to strengthen our plays both offensively and defensively.

la salle just turned it on and killed NU, I thought the bulldogs had a shot at the upset but oh well :))

OT [coming from an atenean]: does anyone else think Maui Villanueva looks like a cross between Jason Webb and Olsen Racela?

UAAP: La Salle foils NU’s upset bid 79-67

MANILA, Philippines – The La Salle Green Archers foiled the National University (NU) Bulldogs’ upset bid scoring a come-from-behind 79-67 win in Saturday’s University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament game at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Facing a 44-31 halftime deficit, La Salle went on a scoring rampage in the third period with veteran guard JV Casio, showing the same leadership and poise of former Archer Mike Cortez, leading the Taft-based squad’s comeback.

The Bulldogs were still enjoying a double-digit advantage, 46-35, courtesy of a Raymond Aguilar lay up barely four minutes gone in the third period. That proved to be their last taste of the lead with the Archers slowly mapping out their comeback.

A Casio three-pointer touched off a 13-0 La Salle scoring attack to grab the lead, 48-46, 3:45 to go.

But things were just heating up for La Salle this time dropping a 14-5 bomb to keep momentum on their side entering the final 10 minutes of the match.

The Archers outscored the Bulldogs, 31-9, in the third quarter with the vaunted La Salle full court press forcing NU to commit nine straight turnovers. The La Salle defense also held NU scoreless for more than five minutes and a single field goal in a two-minute stretch.

La Salle just traded baskets with NU in the final period to notch their eighth win against two losses to remain within striking distance of the league-leading Ateneo Blue Eagles’ 8-1 mark. The win also assured the Archers of a Final Four spot.

With the Archers enjoying several double-digits advantages in the final period, La Salle coach Franz Pumaren had the luxury of resting his starters to give his rookies some playing time.

Casio, held to seven points in the first half, scored 15 in the second going five-of-seven from the field. He also had two rebounds, five assists and two steals. – GMANews.TV
