* * *ILOILO CITY -* It was not a good day for last week's Liga Pilipinas leg champions.* Both the M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos and Quezon Red Oilers, champions of the very legs they hosted, struggled to sustain their winning form as they fell to separate opponents at the start of the Mang Inasal Liga Pilipinas Iloilo Leg Wednesday (July 23) at the University of San Agustin Gym.

* * *Quilo paced the Explorers with 24 points off four triples followed by Yee with 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.* Stephen Padilla led the Ninos with 20 points of four triples while Ron Capati added 14 points.* Marlon Basco had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds but his departure from the game due to a fourth period ankle injury tolled heavily on the Ninos' cause.
* * *In the nightcap, the host Iloilo Mang Inasals of Robert Uy and Coach Jerry Jaranilla tallied a convincing win over the Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi, 92-73.* The Mang Inasals used a strong start by taking the opening period, 20-10.* They then proceeded to take comfortably secure the half, 47-28.

ILOILO CITY – The M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos and the Pagadian Explorers will resume their budding rivalry as the top two teams in Liga Pilipinas arranged a duel for the Mang Inasal Liga Pilipinas Iloilo Leg title by disposing of separate opponents Saturday at the University of San Agustin Gym.
The Ninos of Michel Lhuiller and Coach Yayoy Alcoseba went through anxious moments before eliminating the Quezon Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi, 90-84.
Mark Ababon stole the ball and scooted down the court for an unmolested lay-up that shattered the ninth and final deadlock of the game, 85-83, and 3:11 to play in the fourth period. Ababon’s heads up play ignited the Ninos’ 7-1 closing run that saw the Red Oilers come up with only a Ramsey Williams free throw.
Victorious in their preliminary round meeting, 77-57, it was the same scenario anew for the Ninos as Stephen Padilla drilled in six triples in the first half to give the Ninos the edge, 50-44. However, Jorel Canizares and Angelus Raymundo powered a late surge by the Red Oilers in the fourth period that briefly gave them the lead.
Bruce Dacia topped the Ninos with 22 points on four treys on top of seven rebounds and six assists followed by Padilla with 18, all on treys. Overall, the Ninos converted 11 triples. Marlon Basco had a triple double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Canizares, hounded by a knee injury, stepped up to pump in 18 followed by Mark Magsumbol with 16.
In the day’s opener, the Explorers of Mayor Sammy Co and Coach Eric Samson banked on an 11-1 windup to subdue the Iloilo Mang Inasals of Robert Uy and Coach Jerry Jaranilla, 77-65.
Iloilo’s Chito Jaime scored a field goal to threaten for the last time, 64-66. Suddenly, Jan Villaver countered with a triple, 69-64, and 2:20 remaining. Iloilo could only answer with a Eugene Tan free throw at the 49-second mark that cut the deficit to eight, 65-73. Villaver then sank four free throws to settle the final count.
Ian Daja led the Explorers with 22 points while Villaver knocked in 21. Jaime paced Iloilo with 14 markers and seven boards. Ferdinand Go chipped in 12 points.
Meanwhile at the Tolentino Sports Center in Tagaytay City, Friday’s pairings were repeated but this time with different results. It will be the Taguig Batang Global against the Lipa-Batangas Barakos for the Tagaytay City Leg after the Batang Global whipped the Misamis Oriental Meteors, 95-80, and the Barakos upsetting the host Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, 81-76.

* * *ILOILO CITY – The M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos bagged the Mang Inasal Liga Pilipinas Iloilo Leg Sunday (July 27) at the University of San Agustin Gym at the expense of budding archrival the Pagadian Explorers, 99-82, their fourth crown in just as many legs.* In the process, the Ninos of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Yayoy Alcoseba upped their Liga Pilipinas Tour Points total to 49 and assured themselves of the top seeding and home court advantage throughout next month’s Liga Pilipinas National Playoffs.
* * *The Ninos settled the outcome early, demoralizing the Explorers of Mayor Sammy Co and Coach Eric Samson with a 14-2 opening salvo.* The Explorers never got to taste the lead nor tie the count, although they managed to briefly threaten in the second period.
* * *From there, it was an all-Ninos show as Coach Samson constantly shuffled his players looking for a winning combination.
* * *Stephen Padilla led the Ninos’ charge with 20 points.* Padilla, whose three-point shooting was on fire the whole tournament, was later selected as the leg’s MVP after averaging 17.8 points, converting 23 out of 53 three-point attempts for a 0.404 clip.* Ron Capati followed with 16 points.* Mark Yee had 29 points and 13 rebounds while Ian Daja knocked in 16 points and 10 rebounds as the only two Explorers in double-digits.
* * *After suffering their most humbling Liga loss, 80-91, at the hands of the Explorers on opening day, the Ninos won all their remaining games to claim the title.* The Ninos had earlier annexed the legs hosted by the Ilocos Sur Brave Hearts and Explorers and their very own just last week in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue.
* * *In the Third Place game, the host Iloilo Mang Inasals of Robert Uy and Coach Jerry Jaranilla gave their home fans something to cheer about as they thumped the winless Quezon Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi, 95-84.* More importantly, Iloilo slightly pulled away from the idle Zamboanga Amores for the last playoff berth with eight points versus the latter’s three.* Both teams will play each other this week in Baguio City.
* * *Chito Jaime towed five other Iloilo players in twin scores with 25.* Double-doubles came from Nestor David with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Francis Barcellano with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Eugene Tan with 13 assists and 10 rebounds on top of five points and three steals.* Ryan Panzo paced the Red Oilers with 19 points followed by Jonathan Pinera with 16 points and 16 rebounds and Ramsey Williams with 15 points and 12 assists.
* * *Meanwhile, the simultaneous Tagaytay City Leg went to the Taguig Batang Global after they stopped the Lipa Batangas Barakos, 92-91.* This marks the second leg for the team of Coach Jude Roque.* The Misamis Oriental Meteors settled for Third Place by defeating the host Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, 77-76.
* * *The last two legs of the Liga Pilipinas Tour will commence today in Baguio City and Los Banos, Laguna and will run until August 3.* The Baguio Victory will play host to the Barakos, Mang Inasals and Amores.* The Heroes, Ilocos Sur Brave Hearts and Smart-Pampanga Buddies will visit the Trace-Laguna Stallions.* The National Playoffs will follow immediately.
