Two years ago, both the Tigers and the Tigresses made their return to the top of the league.

MANILA, Philippines - The finalists in last season’s high-school basketball tournament are still undefeated.

Reigning juniors champion La Salle-Zobel and multiple champion Ateneo yawned their way past the opposition in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Saturday at the Blue Eagle Gym in Loyola Heights.

La Salle routed University of the East, 85-42, while Ateneo blazed past Adamson, 68-40. Both schools sport 2-0 records.

University of Santo Tomas (UST) has the same record after taking down National University 70-38.

Far Eastern University-FERN defeated University of the Philippines Integrated School, 77-35, to even its card at 1-1. UPIS fell to 0-2.

In the women’s division, UST was also still perfect after the Tigresses beat the UE Amazons 67-37 Sunday also at the Blue Eagle gym. It was UST’s second straight win.

The other teams with perfect records are UP and FEU. UP beat La Salle 69-60, while FEU dealt defending champion Ateneo its second straight loss after a 61-47 decision. – GMANews.TV

Adamson's Baby Falcons really laid it on UPIS, shocking and awing the Diliman Preps 95-30 in a total show of domination in UAAP junior division action at the Loyola Center in Ateneo. 6-foot-4 forward Aldrin Jarueno led the charge and was ably supported by 6-foot-2 swingman Jay Maderazo and 6-foot-4 center-forward Russel Dix. The trio practically had their way against the smaller Junior Maroons especially inside where Juareno and Maderazo took turns abusing the defense of UPIS.

Against the tall and ahletic Baby Falcons, UPIS sorely felt the absence of RP Youth mainstays and former Junior Maroons Joseph Marata - a former junior division MVP - and whip-quick pointguard Joseph Tolentino.

In the main junior game Ateneo De Manila pulled off a surprisingly tough 70-56 victory against the FEU FERN Baby Tamaraws. Blue Eaglets veterans pointguard JV Dumrique, forward Ael Banal and swingman Juami "Magic" Tiongson took turns from three-point range in the first period as Ateneo went up on a jackrabbit start 11-2. But FEU quickly settled in as Jon Tolomia and Antonio Pardo responded with some long range bombs of their own to keep it close 21-16 early in the second period.

Ateneo threatened to break the game wide open at 48-34 but FEU regrouped quickly enough behind 6-foot-5 high leaping center Russel Escoto and 6-foot-2 power forward Jun Almario, as the two Baby Tams hit some nifty inside baskets. Escoto, originally a volleyball player, almost had a two-handed alley-oop dunk as he soared clear above the rim for a put-in to bring FEU within 48-47.

Guard Keifer Ravena soon remedied that situation with two sick drives, a hop-skip-jump layup and a whirling behind-the-back pass to center Ivan Enriquez as the Blue Eaglets established some separation yet again at 54-47. Ice Reyes, Enriquez, Tiongson and Chuckie Dumrique then conspired to widen the gap some more to 59-47 and were never seriously threatened after that.

The Ateneo Blue Eaglets defeated the UST Tiger Cubs and NABRO today, 75-74. The officiating was an incredible display of utter stupidity, arguably worse than the NABRO officiating in the seniors level. After a first quarter that had the Eaglets comfortably ahead, bad officiating and hot shooting by UST gave the Tiger Cubs a 7-point lead going into the half (the first time all season long that the Eaglets have been down at the half). The Blue Eaglets had to overcome a bad shooting day, excellent shooting by UST's players, and NABRO's stupidity during key stretches of the third and fourth quarters to take the game. In the end, the game was decided by freethrows, with a UST player missing a freethrow that could have sent the game into overtime.

I have a feeling that NABRO's can easily manipulate the Juniors and Women's games because it is not televised. ::)

^One of the worst, if not THE WORST, thing that has hapened to the UAAP is NABRO.

It looks like its going to be a Blue and green affair in the seniors and juniors! Grabe, kung sakali, todo "killing" na naman ang mga scalpers!!!

I seem to have a different view of the officiating. Maybe because I literally had a different view. I felt UST got the raw end of some bad calls and non-calls in the 3rd quarter. But Ravena was really awesome. I hope the young Tigercubs learn from the 2 consecutive close games and will have a measure of revenge in the 2nd round.

UAAP Junior’s: FEU stuns La Salle, faces Ateneo in finals

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University coach Horacio Lim is speechless when asked to describe his wards’ performance against no.2 seed La Salle-Zobel in Wednesday’s final-four game in the UAAP Junior’s division.

The Baby Tamaraws succeeded what their senior counterparts failed to do beating the twice-to-beat holding Junior Archers, 58-56, in a knockout match at The Arena in San Juan City.

Lim said it was the Tams’ defense that made the difference in FEU’s win. “We got them covered. Hindi man kami maka shoot pero sila din."

Russel Escoto and Chris Tolomia scored 13 points each to lead FEU’s balanced offense in completing the upset win against the season-leading Junior Archers. FEU trailed La Salle in the first half but slowly crept back in the third period tying the score at 45-all to set up the exciting finish

A 14-7 exchange gave FEU a 59-52 advantage entering the final two minutes of the match.

But the boys from La Salle won’t go down that easy.

With a minute and six seconds left, Nicolas Elorde’s two free throws and a Luis Dela Paz jumper sandwiched an FEU turnover as La Salle threatened at 58-56 with 36 seconds left in the game clock.

The Baby Tams’ chose to use up the clock with Ramon Santiago missing in his three-point try as the shotclock expired.

FEU, however, regained possession after Tolomia grabbed Santiago’s miss with 11.5 ticks left. Elorde, with both teams in the penalty, opted to foul Tolomia to stop the clock at 10.7 seconds.

Tolomia, however, experienced cramps with Paulo Talavera replacing the former at the free throw line. Talavera missed both attempts giving La Salle one more chance to either send the game into overtime or win it with three-pointer.

La Salle’s Matthew Capacio grabbed the defensive board then threw a hurried pass to Ridge Santos, who failed to handle the ball as it went out of bounds.

FEU also turned over the ball with five seconds left giving La Salle enough time for a final play but Elorde missed on his baseline drive at the buzzer.

Lim said they are the underdogs when they face the Ateneo Blue Eaglets in Saturday’s Game 1. “Being in the finals is already a win for us. Pero di pa tapos ang mission sana we can give a good series. – Andrew Lanot

For Far Eastern University the women and children exacted some payback for the men: FEU-FERN upset defending champion Lasalle Zobel 58-56 while the Lady Tamaraws turned back the Adamson Lady Falcons 74-63, as they made the high school and women's division finals of the UAAP basketball tournament.

The Baby Tamaraws looked headed for the exit as the Junior Archers went up by as much as nine points 34-25 late in the second period. But the boys from Fairview clamped down hard on defense in the second half and then turned to power forward Chino Almario and guards Mon Santiago and Chris Tolomia to turn the tables on Zobel. As Almario went to work from the baseline, Santiago and Tolomio found their range from the perimeter.

Zobel found itself frustrated by the tightened FEU-FERN defense as pointguard Nico Elorde and forward-center Gwayne Capacio forced the action without much in return. The Baby Tamaraws held on to a two-point lead 58-56 and ball possession with only 36 seconds left in the game. Tolomia ran a corner-to-corner passing game before Santiago took a long shot with their shot clock winding down. Santiago clanked it off the rim but Tolomia secured the offensive rebound and was fouled by Elorde. Tolomia went down with cramps and had to be substituted at the foul line by guard Paolo Talavera. Talavera muffed both freethrows with time down to a little over 10 seconds.

Zobel had a last crack at sending the game into overtime or winning it outright but Elorde was blunted on a desperation drive by forward Arwin Albano as the clock ran out.

Bedlam them erupted as the Baby Tamaraws and their fans exploded into big bursts of sheer joy. On the Zobel side Capacio, Elrode and Luigi Dela Paz looked shell-shocked at the unexpected turn of events. The Junior Archers were favored in this match-up with a twice-to-beat advantage. FEU-FERN extended the series and forced this ruybber match by winning last Saturday in double overtime.

Center Russel Escoto had 13 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Baby Tamaraws, although he left the game early in the fourth period with massive cramps. Tolomia also had 13 points to go with nine rebounds.

Capacio had 11 points and 21 rebounds while Elorde led the scoring for Zobel with 12 markers.

On the distaff side forward Chovi Borja and pointguard Bernadette Mercado each had 16 points to overcome the 24 points and 13 rebounds of Adamson center Amby Almazan.

From a close first half the Lady Tamaraws got some separation with their high-low plays in the second half and practically cruised to the victory.

It will be FEU-FERN versus last year's runners-up the Ateneo Blue Eaglets disputing the high school diadem while FEU faces another runner-up from last season in the UP Lady Maroons in the women's division title clash.

Sayang for FEU as their 3 teams in basketball could've been in the finals and a chance to possibly repeat the 1994 grandslam of UST.
