despite the effort of the referee to win the game for admu, ust defeated the defending champion, admu, 65-57 behind the superb game of maricris bacaro. after a 14-0 run by the tigresses, the first quarter ended at 17-10. ust also takes 2nd quarter at 33-23, 3rd quarter also for ust 51-41. most of the points of ust came from their inside game while ateneo live and die with their outside shooting and 3-poinr shots. the lady eagles cannot penetrate the defense of ust thats why they resorted to outside shooting. only, trina limgenco (cute siya at kamukha rin ni tricia limgenco ng wvt) managed to penetrate the ust defense and she is the only consistent lady eagles. magaling pala siya pero no match pa rin siya kay bacaro. buenacosa and gregorio also played a good game though napuruhan ng siko ni tricia si buenacosa sa shoulder and need to be bandaged kaya medyo affected yung game niya. the irony of it all, siya pa nag tinawagan ng foul. guys, pasensya na kayo hindi ako masyadong marunong magbigay ng blow-by-blow analysis.

grabe talaga ang officiating at kung hindi lang talaga ako paos, puro mura aabutin sa akin nung mga refereee. sabi nga sa akin ni fr. de sagon na cool lang daw ako. but in fairness, tinawagan niya ng flagrant foul yung insigne yata apelyido at na technical foul pa kaya 4 free throws was awarded to ust plus ball possession. sayang nga lang at 1 lang ang na-i-shoot.

^ UST and UP sould change places in our ranking ;). UST just beat UP in their playoff for 2nd place this afternoon and clinched the twice-to-beat advantage. Bacarro had help from his teammates in the arly stages of the came which allowed him to take over in the end. She's got nerves of steel going 4-for-4 from the free thtow line in the closing seconds of the game. Small consolation after losing the CDC crown for the second season to the UP Pep :D

Final Four opener
Tigresses push Lady Maroons on the edge

By Merck Maguddayao

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tigresses burned the hoops of the San Juan Arena to wallop the University of the Philippines (UP) for the first time this season, 69-64, in the opening game of their virtual best-of-three match in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines women’s basketball Final Four today.

Ace Tigress and tournament top scorer Marichu Bacaro exploded for 31 points to lead the Tigresses in the game, which was set as a playoff for the second spot. On the other hand, Lady Maroon star player Sihaya Sadorra chalked in 15 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists to lead UP.

The game started with both teams scorching hot from the three point line in rapid succession. However, the Lady Maroons got the early edge, 17-20, with center Fatima Tolentino scoring six quick points off set plays.

The second quarter opened with the Tigresses converting on perimeter shots courtesy of Bacaro and forward Rem Buenacosa. The Lady Maroons, meanwhile, fought neck and neck, with Kryzza Casino and Diwa Paz converting four acrobatic lay-ups. The Bacaro-Buenacosa duo then sparked a 10-0 run capped by a nearly-botched trey from Tigress shooter Nikki Leonardo. The Tigresses ended the half leading, 38-31.

Coming off the halftime break, Sadorra suddenly charged for six points off dribble drives to keep UP in contention. Buenacosa and center Joan Gregorio retaliated by scoring 4 points each off perimeter shots to lift UST to a double-digit lead, 47-37, halfway through the third quarter. Both teams then traded baskets to end the quarter with the Tigresses leading, 54-46.

In the payoff period, the game shifted to a Sadorra versus Bacaro showdown as the two veterans showcased an array of daredevil drives on the open court. However, Tigress Gail Fermin’s three-point shot extended UST’s lead to nine, 64-55, with 4 minutes left.

The Lady Maroons then replied with a 7-0 run as Sadorra played decoy, issuing assists to Diwa Paz and Jedil Robelo, who converted on open outside shots. Bacaro, however, spoiled UP’s run by converting on a tightly guarded dribble drive to make UST pull away for good.

With their third straight loss, the Lady Maroons are relegated to a do-or-die match against the Tigresses on Saturday, 9 am, at the San Juan Arena, to be followed by the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws versus Adamson Lady Falcons semifinal match, where the former holding a twice-to-beat advantage.

UST (69)- Bacaro 31, Buenacosa 13, Leonardo 10, Gregorio 8, Fermin 3, Bombeo 2, De Leon 2, Rivera 0

UP (64)- Sadorra 15, Tolentino 11, Paz 10, Robelo 8, Casino 7, D. Bautista 6, Tomelden 4, Del Rosario 2, Stevens 1, M. Bautista 0, Cainglet 0

Quarter scores: 17-20, 38-31, 54-46, 69-64

MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons earned a return trip to the finals after a 50-46 win over the University of Santo Tomas Tigress in Wednesday’s final-four game in the UAAP women’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

UP faced a tough task when it faced UST in the semifinals after the Tigresses hold a twice-to-beat advantage. The Lady Maroons, however, coasted to a 52-39 rout in Game 1 to force a knockout match and completed the upset Wednesday.

Fatima Tolentino led UP’s victory with another double-double performance with 17 points and 18 rebounds as she held her own against the tough UST defense.

The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for UST, which even led by 15 points at the end of the first quarter but could not sustain their hot start as the game progresses.

UP showed better endgame poise as it rallied back in the match then held off UST’s repeated rallies to secure the win.

Marichu Bacaro buried a three-pointer to put UST within three, 49-46, with two minutes left in the game.

UST, however, failed to convert in the final 40 seconds of the match despite back-to-back offensive rebounds by Paula Bombeo and Rem Buenacosa.

Bacaro led UST’s losing cause with 18 points, nine rebounds, nine assists, two steals and one block. – Andrew Lanot

I don't know about the other individual awards, but I think Bacaro of UST would be the run-away winner for the MVP.

UAAP Women’s: Top seed FEU avoids Adamson upset in semis
09/17/2008 | 08:38 PM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University avoided Adamson University’s upset bid in their UAAP women’s basketball tournament knockout match for the last finals berth as the Lady Tamaraws completed a 74-63 demolition of the Lady Falcons Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Tams grabbed the second finals berth and will face the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in Game 1 on Saturday also at The Arena.

Chovi Borja and Bernadette Mercado netted 16 points each to lead FEU’s scoring to help the Lady Tams bounce back from a 57-56 first game loss. FEU holds a twice-to-beat edge against Adamson.

Amby Almazan, ranked fifth in the most valuable player statistical race, scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Adamson’s losing cause. She also had four steals, a block and an assist.

FEU trailed early in the first period but used a second-quarter comeback to grab the lead and was never threatened after that. – Andrew Lanot

UP came back from 10 points down in the third period to turn back Santo Tomas 50-46 and return to the UAAP women's division finals.

Guard Marichu Bacaro started off hot for the Tigresses as UST used their run and gun game to the hilt in the first half, taking a quick lead and holding off the Lady Maroons.

Bacaro however found little help from the rest of her teammates and was huffing and puffing by the end of the first half. She looked like she got her second wind to start the second half and once again led the way in a bunch of UST spurts that had the Lady Maroons continuing to backpedal.

In the payoff fourth period however things turned around for the girls from Diliman. RP Team forward-center Fats Tolentino and forward Sai Sadorra came alive on the firing end and ruled the boards even as guards Diwa Paz and Camille Tomelden ran the tightly-controlled UP offense with aplomb to tie the game at 40-all.

Tomelden, Paz and Sadorra each had a basket to make it 46-40 with under five minutes left to play. Bacaro and forward Rem Buenacosa then started firing blanks, even as center Anne Gregorio failed on at least three put-back attempts that negated her superb glass cleaning efforts along with center-forward Paula Bombeo. Swingman Nikki Leonardo then hit a trey for Santo Tomas to make it 43-46 to stop the bleeding.

UP however simply would not be denied as Tolentino closed out the game with a couple of freethrows for the final count.

Tolentino led UP with 17 points and 18 huge rebounds while Sadorra added 16 points and 15 boards of her own to typify the excellent board work and interior superiority of the Lady Maroons.

Bacaro, the runaway MVP leader this season, had a near-triple double with 18 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. No other Tigress contributed in double figures.

UP will face Chovi Borja and the rest of the FEU Lady Tamaraws in the women's division championship series. Borja and Badet Mercado led FEU over Katherine Sandel, Amby Almazan and the rest of the Adamson Lady Falcons in the game previous to seal their entry into the Finals.

FEU was the 2006 runner-up when UST was champion while UP was last season's runners-up when Ateneo won their second crown in three years.
