* * *CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Smart-Pampanga Buddies proved to be unfriendly hosts as they crushed the Iloilo Mang Inasals, 97-69, in the featured contest on the opening day of the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg Wednesday (June 25) at the University of the Assumption Gym.

* * *The Buddies under Coach Aric del Rosario controlled the whole contest save for a brief stretch in the third period that saw the Mang Inasals of Coach Jerry Jaranilla tie the count for the first and only time, 51-51, on four consecutive free throws by Ferdinand Go.* The Buddies came back to erect a shaky 60-55 advantage entering the final period.

* * *Suddenly, the floodgates burst open.* After a hook shot by Iloilo’s Francis Barcellano, the Buddies went on a 25-8 run led by Emmerson Oreta and Khiel Misa for an 85-65 bubble entering the final two minutes.

* * *Bolias powered the Amores with 16 points followed by Ramirez and France with 12.* France also hauled a team-best nine rebounds.* Fritz Bauzon was the lone Hero in double figures with 10 as the rest of the wards of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino struggled for form.

* * *CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga –The host Smart-Pampanga Buddies cruised to their second straight win in as many games by beating the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, 73-65, in continuing action at the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg Thursday at the University of the Assumption Gym.

* * *Trailing by a point in the second period, 22-23, the Buddies of Coach Aric del Rosario went on a 10-0 run ignited by an Emmerson Oreta triple for a 32-23 tally.* The Buddies never relinquished the lead from thereon, leading at the halftime break, 37-32.

* * *Jemal Vizcarra and Christian Luanzon then scored all of their eight and six markers in the third quarter to repel all of the Heroes’ attempts to rally.* The best the Heroes could do was close in by a pair, 47-45, on a Mark Benitez field goal.* Vizcarra promptly answered with a triple to cool the rally, 50-45.* Khiel Misa buried a triple for the Buddies’ biggest lead, 65-50, and seven minutes remaining in the contest.

* * *Go and Jaime led the way for Iloilo with 20 points each.* Big men Nestor David and Francis Barcellano followed with 14 apiece.* Eugene Tan had 15 assists to go with his 10 points.* Scoreless in their last game, Ronald Saracho pumped in 27 points but it was not enough to reverse the Amores’ fortunes.* Charlie Bolias added 19 for the Amores of Coach Ronald Rico.

Hmmm .... Jared Dillinger, 4 pts.? In a league that is arguably below the PBL level as a whole, the former US NCAA Div. 1 player has not exactly been lighting up the scoreboards. Hmmmm .....

* * *CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – It will be the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes against the host Smart-Pampanga Buddies for the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg after both teams registered contrasting wins in the semifinal round Saturday (June 28) at the University of the Assumption Gym.

* * *Before the games could begin, the league announced that the semifinal pairings would be changed after it was ruled that the Zamboanga Amores forfeited their opening day win against the Heroes for fielding an ineligible player.* It was found out that center Unik Reyes, who played nine scoreless minutes in the said contest, was not in the Amores’ original submitted roster.* Hence, the once 1-2 Amores dropped to 0-3 while the erstwhile winless Heroes rose to 1-2 and both teams switching semifinal opponents.

* * *Center JR Gerilla drilled in a triple with 6.7 seconds to lift the Heroes over the Iloilo Mang Inasals, 79-78.* Silent the entire second half after tallying seven points in the first half, Gerilla received a kick-out pass by the posting Mark Benitez for the winning shot.* Iloilo coach Jerry Jaranilla sued for time but Nestor David’s shot in the final play of the game missed the mark.

* * *It was a sorry loss for Iloilo, which erected a seven-point lead with 2:15 to go, 76-69.* The Heroes of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino clawed back via a Lawrence Bonus follow-up, a Jeff Tajonera triple and a basket by Benitez to tie the count at 76-76 with 30 ticks remaining.* David temporarily gave the lead back to Iloilo on two free throws off a Gerilla foul with 19.6 seconds to play.

* * *Fritz Bauzon topped the Heroes with 16 points.* Jonathan Rivera scored 12 of his 15 points in the third period as the Heroes overturned their 34-39 halftime deficit to tie the contest entering the fourth quarter, 60-60.* Chito Jaime had another monster game for Iloilo with 23 points and 10 rebounds.* Francis Barcellano added 14 markers.

* * *In the nightcap, the Buddies whipped the Amores for the second day in a row, 98-86, maintaining their spotless record.* After a tight first quarter that saw three deadlocks and five lead changes, the Buddies under Coach Aric del Rosario unleashed their might in the second period to outscore the Amores, 32-17, for a 57-39 halftime tally.* Larry Rodriguez and Khiel Misa presided over the onslaught by combining for 14 points.

* * *The Buddies did not relent, stretching their lead to its furthest midway in the third quarter, 71-46.* The margin remained in the twenties until a little too late explosion in the fourth period led by Peter Naron and Jonathan Parreno whittled the final deficit.

* * *Rodriguez had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds plus two blocks.* Emmerson Oreta also had superb numbers off the bench with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists.* Naron paced the Amores of Coach Ronald Rico and Rep. Erbie Fabian with 18 points and seven rebounds.* Parreno followed with 17.

* * *The undefeated Buddies are heavily favored in Sunday’s finale owing to their home court advantage and their 73-65 triumph over the Heroes last June 26.

* * *CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Smart-Pampanga Buddies captured the Liga Pilipinas-Pampanga Leg with a dramatic win over the Tagaytay-Cavite Heroes, 78-77, Sunday at the University of the Assumption Gym.

* * *Bulldozing through the opposition in the first four days of the tournament, the Buddies of Coach Aric del Rosario suddenly found their biggest threat in a team whose lone win in the prelims was via forfeiture and then sneaked into the finals via a late miracle triple in Saturday’s semifinals.

* * *Francis Mercado canned a left corner jumper with 39 seconds left off a kick-out pass from the driving Larry Rodriguez for the game’s final and marginal points, 78-77.* The Buddies then clamped on defense, stopping several Heroes plays and chopping time away from the clock.

* * *In the final play of the game, Nani Epondulan launched a side attempt that missed.* Marvin Yambao, ironically a former Assumption varsity star now playing for the visitors, found himself unguarded as he tipped in the miss at the buzzer.* However, the referees ruled the shot was released after the buzzer had sounded, thus triggering the Buddies’ celebration.

* * *The Buddies controlled the first half, 45-38, and looked towards reprising their blowouts of the past days.* However, the Heroes of Coach Yong Garcia and Mayor Bambol Tolentino lived up to their team name and battled back gallantly behind Lawrence Bonus, Fritz Bauzon and Haddi Porto to lead entering the final canto, 60-59.

* * *Emmerson Oreta and Rodriguez combined for 11 of the Buddies’ first 17 points in the fourth quarter to erect a 76-68 advantage with 3:42 remaining.* The Heroes the gave one last surge, culminating with a Porto field goal that gave them the lead for the last time, 77-76, and 1:03 on the clock.

* * *Oreta capped his tournament-long brilliance with a 25-point output.* Rodriguez had 15 points and 12 rebounds.* Bauzon led the Heroes with 19 points and 15 rebounds.* Bonus added 17 and Epondulan 16.

* * *Meanwhile, the Zamboanga Amores of Coach Ronald Rico ended their campaign on a positive note by taking Third Place honors over the Iloilo Mang Inasals of Coach Jerry Jaranilla, 106-93.* The Amores, whose participation was also supported by Rep. Erbie Fabian, led all the way from the opening buzzer and never allowed the Mang Inasals to threaten.

* * *Jonathan Parreno and Charlie Bolias submitted 33 points each to power the Amores.* Ferdinand Go paced Iloilo with five triples en route to 27 points.* Chito Jaime and Eldrin Senierez followed with 13 markers apiece.

* * *The Liga Pilipinas Tour will next visit the cities of Taguig and Pagadian beginning July 2.
