SANTO DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – The M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos raced to their second straight win by clipping the tough Quezon Red Oilers, 86-84, in continuing Liga Pilipinas action Thursday (June 19) at the Santo Domingo People’s Center.

The Ninos of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Yayoy Alcoseba looked headed for the easy win, leading by as much as 20 points late in the third canto, 69-49, on back-to-back triples by Richard Ian Saladaga.

Suddenly, the Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi staged a mighty fourth quarter rally as Jorel Canizares unloaded 11 of his 13 points and the Ninos managing to score only from the free throw line.

Ramsey Williams sank two free throws to threaten at the 40-second mark, 82-85. In the ensuing play, Danny Aying missed a jumper with the shot clock winding down, allowing the Red Oilers to grab the defensive rebound. The Ninos’ defense then collapsed on Canizares for a stop, causing Coach Bunyi to call a time out with seven seconds left.

Kim Macanig then scored a basket, 84-85, with two seconds to go and the Red Oilers quickly fouled Mark Ababon who easily made his first three throw for the final tally. Ababon then missed his second free throw with the ball bouncing to the hands of Williams whose desperation mid-court heave at the buzzer went no where.

Bruce Dacia led the Ninos with 21 points followed by Marlon Basco and Stephen Padilla with 13 apiece. Macanig topped the Red Oilers with 16 while Williams and Joseph Lingao-Lingao both added 14 as the Red Oilers absorbed their second loss in as many games.

In the nightcap, the Harbour Centre-backed Taguig Batang Global of Mayor Freddie Tinga and Coach Jude Roque leaned on two free throws by Lou Gatumbato off a Marlon Kalaw foul with 1.9 seconds remaining for the pulsating win over the host Ilocos Sur Brave Hearts, 79-78. Both teams leveled their win-loss cards at 1-1 in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

Trailing 77-78, the Batang Global had an earlier chance to pull ahead but Ronnie Matias bungled his two free throws of Arden Guiyab with 6.2 ticks to play. Paul Reguera quickly fouled Guiyab, who also missed his two free throws. Roel Hugnatan grabbed the defensive rebound and quickly fired a pass to set up Gatumbato for his heroics.

After the game, Brave Hearts coach Jun da Jose rushed from their bench and confronted the referees. The timely intervention by Ilocos Sur officials led by Gov. DV Savellano prevented the incident from escalating any further.

SANTO DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – The host Ilocos Sur Brave Hearts ended the winning streak of the erstwhile undefeated M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos, 80-77, and top the preliminary round of the Liga Pilipinas Ilocos Sur Leg Friday night (June 20) at the Santo Domingo People’s Center.

The Ninos, Brave Hearts and first game winner Taguig Batang Global finished with similar 2-1 win-loss cards. The Brave Hearts of Gov. DV Savellano got the top ranking thanks to their superior 1.013 quotient computed by dividing their points over their opponents’ points in games involving the three teams. The Ninos took second at 1.012 while the Batang Global took third at 0.977.

In the semifinals, the Bravehearts will meet the winless Quezon Red Oilers while the Ninos will battle the Batang Global, in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

The Ninos of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Yayoy Alcoseba controlled the first three quarters until the Brave Hearts made their move in the final canto. A basket by Jun Balares followed by an Eder Saldua triple put the Brave Hearts on top for good, 74-71.

With assistant coach Tony Madarang calling the shots, the Brave Hearts hung tough. Mark Ababon threatened for the last time with a strong drive, 76-77, and 1:23 to play. After a long and wild sequence that saw both teams miss a series of easy shots while committing a slew of turnovers, Saldua ended the madness with a put-back for a 79-76 tally and 33 ticks left.

Ababon added a free throw, 77-79, at the 16-second mark. Marlon Kalaw quickly drew a foul and made only one of his two free throws. However, Kalaw made up by swiping the ball away and breaking up the Ninos’ final offensive to seal the win.

The league suspended Brave Hearts coach Jun da Jose for the rest of the Ilocos Sur leg in the light of his violent outburst against the referees after their 78-79 loss to the Batang Global last Thursday. Coach da Jose was also slapped a 50,000-peso fine plus a stern warning.

Saldua again topped the Brave Hearts with 20 points while Rolly Basilides added 10 points. Ababon led the Ninos with 17 markers followed by Ron Capati with 15.

In the first game, the Harbour Centre-supported Batang Global of Mayor Freddie Tinga and Coach Jude Roque set the stage of the triple-tie by subduing the Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi, 75-72.

Noy Javier sank a triple to give the Batang Global the lead for good, 71-70, and 1:03 to go. Lou Gatumbato added two free throws to pad their lead, 73-70. Ramsey Williams then scored on a running shot to threaten with nine seconds remaining, 72-73. Jorel Canizares then fouled Paul Reguera, who calmly made both his charities for the final count and preserve the win. Williams gave a desperation heave at the buzzer but to no avail.

The Red Oilers played well to lead at the halftime break, 42-30. Suddenly, the Red Oilers could only muster nine markers in the third period as the Batang Global went on a rampage behind Javier, Gatumbato, Marvin Ortiguerra and Ronnie Matias to pull even entering the fourth quarter, 51-51.

Gatumbato paced Taguig with 14 points followed by Nino Marquez with 12. Hafer Mondragon topped the Red Oilers with 13 while Canizares and Williams chipped in 11 each.

How They Scored:

SANTO DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – The M. Lhuillier-Cebu Ninos finally unleashed their vaunted form to crush the hopes of the Taguig Batang Global, 117-94, and advance to the championship game of the Liga Pilipinas-Ilocos Sur Leg Saturday (June 21) evening at the Santo Domingo People’s Center.

Still smarting from their 77-80 loss the night before to the host and upcoming finals opponent Ilocos Sur Brave Hearts, the Ninos started slow allowing the Harbour Centre-sponsored Batang Global of Mayor Freddie Tinga and Coach Jude Roque to race to a 24-13 advantage behind the sizzling three-point shooting of Lou Gatumbato, Noy Javier, Boyet Bautista and Marvin Ortiguerra. The Batang Global then held their form to take the first period, 26-22.

Gatumbato and Nino Marquez continued to give the Ninos a tough time, until the troika of Stephen Padilla, Mark Ababon and Richard Ian Saladaga finally found their range to signal the Ninos’ comeback and seize control by halftime, 52-48.

Coach Yayoy Alcoseba then exploited the early foul trouble on the Batang Global’s key men by pounding the inside. Padilla and Saladaga also continued to bomb from long range to slowly pull away. Five straight points by Saladaga put the Ninos on top for good, 59-55, and still 7:46 left in the third period. Bruce Dacia then slashed to the hoop, defying all defenses thrown at him to sustain the Ninos’ rampage.

Raffy Nantes and Coach Oliver Bunyi. The Red Oilers will play the Batang Global for Third Place in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

Gilbert Malabanan jumped from the blind side to tip in an Eder Saldua miss with 1.3 seconds left on the game clock and barely beating the 24-second shot clock to shatter a 79-79 tie. It was another heartbreaking loss for the Red Oilers, after Hafer Mondragon missed a corner attempt in the game’s final play.

Christian Cabatu completed a three-point play off Joseph Lingao-Lingao with 1:13 left to lift the Brave Hearts on top for good, 78-77. Marlon Kalaw then broke up the Red Oilers’ ensuing possession by swiping the ball. Cabatu quickly drew a foul, making a free throw to pad their lead. Ramsey Williams then made an under-goal stab to knot the count for the last time at the 27-second mark, 79-79.

Malabanan finished with 19 points, including the game-winner. Cabatu, who hails from Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, had his best Liga game so far with 13 points. Williams paced the Red Oilers with 28 points followed by Kim Macanig with 14.

Updates.. Pwede mgtanong.. Dba round robin ang game..

Bakit yung sked ng game o system ng game ay ..

June 19 (Thursday) -- Mayor Arturo S. Lugod Gym (Gingoog City)
Laguna Stallions d. Baguio Victory, 91-90 (OT)
Misamis Oriental Meteors d. Pagadian Explorers, 58-46

June 20 (Friday) -- Mayor Arturo S. Lugod Gym (Gingoog City)
Baguio Victory d. Pagadian Explorers, 74-67
Misamis Oriental Meteors d. Laguna Stallions, 84-74

June 21 (Saturday) -- Xavier University Gym
Baguio Victory d. Laguna Stallions, 104-95 (Semifinal 1)
Pagadian Explorers d. Misamis Oriental Meteors, 63-59 (Semifinal 2)

June 22 (Sunday) -- Xavier University Gym
Misamis Oriental Meteors d. Laguna Stallions, 82-77 (for Third Place)
Pagadian Explorers d. Baguio Victory, 63-49 (Championship)

d ko maintindihan, Dba 2 loses and Pagadian, bakit sila umabot sa Semis at championship?

Can anybody explain the system to us.. para naman di kami malito..

Kasi kung round robin, dapat makalaban ng Pagadian ang Laguna dba?
???

yeah i've read it..

kaso lng.. hindi ba unfair dun sa mga winners on the first 2 days? Like for example..

On the 2 days:

Baguio - 1 win, 1 lose
Mis.Or. - 2 wins, no lose
Laguna - 1 win, 1 lose
Pagadian - no win, 2 lose..

tas on the third day:

Pagadian VS Mis.Or. - Pagadian wins..

Sayang naman yung pinag.iponan ng Mis.Or., don't you think?

I've never been interested in watching basketball games.. Nadala lang ako sa mga kaibigan ko, not that wala din akong alam sa basketball pero mahilig ako dati at maganda panoorin ang laro kung may kilala ka diba? Or idol.. watever..

OMG Jordan, actually.. what to say? Hmm.. I'm supporting my friend.. Dunno what my friend sees in him.. Sabi ng kaibigan ko, ang bait2x nya daw? True ba... hahaha..

Nglaro sila dito sa place namin sa touring phase.. Well, bida sya ng team nila.. It's liek 1 man game.. kaya sila champ sa southern leg.. Pangit nga e.. bottom sila tas they win over the top.. Wawa naman Mis.Or. sayang yung first 2 games na win nila.. And, pointless sa Pagadian kasi its a 1-man show.. parang isa lang ang player dun e.. assist lng ni Rob ang andun.. tsaka wala silang defense... Kailangan ni Mark ng magaling na assist or team members.. kawawa naman sya at solo nya ang game.. hehehe.. no wonder my friend get mesmerized by him.. And note, my friend is the princess in our town.. she got everything except Mark.. hahahaha.. sana di to mabasa ng friend ko.. She's leaving Philippines soon.. I'm gonna miss her.. argh...
